Alex Rankin is regarded by many as the godfather of all godfather's when it comes to MTB films. Rankin's ability to capture some of the wildest racing footage in the Earthed and Sprung films set the benchmark for all MTB films that followed.

Two of Hope Technology's riders were luckily chosen by Alex back in the day to feature in the Earthed films. Hope Factory team rider, Adam Brayton aka Gas2Flat aka Keswick Kestrel aka Eskiboy, got wild and loose in Earthed 5 - The Law of Fives.

Hope's Belgium DH/freerider, Nico Vink had an earlier Earthed début in Earthed 3 riding flat out on the Sprint Avalanche track in Oz en Oisans.

On set filming - Ultimate Hucker Sender edit

Both riders are fast loose and love a good huck, but have two of the most contrasting riding styles around. Brayton - flat out, on-the-edge racer and Vink with his flowly and super smooth style. Who better to bring them both together than the guy they both credit with kick-starting their media careers, the godfather himself, Alex Rankin.

After putting in a few weeks of day and night shifts digging tracks around the Lake District, Adam invited Nico and Alex to spend a few days filming and hucking. Alex hasn't failed to disappoint, capturing the guys riding on the edge and pulling off some pretty big jumps along the way.

This "...Ultimate Hucker Sender" edit by Alex has a distinctively "Earthed" and raw edge to it - no fancy gadgets or slo-mo's - just flat out loose riding.

bigquotesIt was really good to catch up with Nico and Adam for this project, we laughed a lot and got lucky with the UK winter weather, but the speed of Adam on his local tracks was insane and had us all with jaws dropped. - Alex Rankin

Enjoy!

P.S. Nico rides all the tracks blind - not bad ey?!

I don't understand how brayton can turn 90 degrees so quickly and still fly out of the corner.
  • 51 0
 Neither do we!!
  • 21 0
He just... snaps the bike round and then he's out of it and pedaling, I've watched this 3 times so far and I've come to the conclusion that he is a wizard.

Video with good ol British trail! HUZZAH!!!
  • 2 0
Kinda hard to explain but he seems to keep his body in one place and make the bike rotate around him.

"You need a hatchback not a limousine"

f*cking priceless comment
  • 12 0
For those trails he's probably right!
  • 6 3
His demo has a long wheelbase as well...
  • 8 1
But a way shorter chainstay and a steeper head angle
  • 3 2
I think Nico would rather be on a size down on those trails. The oddball Demo geo works pretty good there with all that loamy grip. Still, if it was wide open and rough I'd rather be on the Gambler.
  • 1 1
 @jclnv Couldn't agree more!
  • 3 0
The Gambler has exactly the same CS length in the short setting. That said, I do agree with jclnv, having ridden it, it's definitely more suited for alpine riding.

Your all the same. No trails too ride. Ant giving any reply for those mongoose bike rider hoo came down and told me "YOU DONT HAVE THE MAP TO THE f*ckING TRAILS!?" So I gave them the finger and biked along... FAST.

the bike looks really small for Niko, look 5:05

Wicked action Alex!! Those lads are out for a rip, eh bud? Hung out with both Adam and Nico at Whistler last summer…awesome dudes. Big air and sick cornering! Got me psyched!!

  • 2 1
 Mountain biking is a lifestyle
  • 13 2
 Yeah, like golf.
  • 9 0
He captures the speed and action in downhill like no other, and now in glorious 1080p.....More please Rankin!
  • 20 0
Damn, I need to go rethink my turning abilities. That was crazy fast! And happy holidays.
  • 17 1
Hope there was some fast forward editing cause those turns were insane!!
  • 8 1
Gas2Flat aka Adam is well know for his aggressive turning style !!
  • 7 8
Dude, it may be Christmas, but its not a disney movie. If you wanna boost that high in real life, you've gotta go that fast.

Actually, upon finishing the whole thing, sometimes there was a disney amount of gravity. Fast forwarding took away from it in places.

And that being said, best hucker/sender edit (the kind everybody loves) there's been in a while.
  • 13 1
There is no fast forwarding. It's just filmed with a VIDEO camera and not a DSLR. Zooming and panning follows the rider and makes it look fast and exciting.
  • 3 1
 Dang. 3:45 is absurd then.

Come on hopetech it's the season of goodwill an all that, Cnc nico a tooth. On a serious note great video, need more of this on regular occurrence.
  • 9 0
Brayton should be hooked up full time. Imagine what the kid could do with proper sponsorship. Not that Hope isn't an awesome company but I mean full deal with Specialized Racing and everything that comes with it. Good luck Adam for the upcoming season.
  • 9 0
can't wait for brayton to smash it next season, such a talented rider
  • 18 0
No smashing just winning please :-)
  • 8 0
It reminds me the good old segments from earthed! Aggressive, tight turn and tons of style!
  • 1 1
That's right, although the music could be even more weird! Big Grin Either way, great job guys to bring Earthed style back!
  • 8 0
 Bring back the Earthed series.
  • 6 0
Yessssss!!! Vintage Rankin. Just what I need on the big day. Even the goth psych rock soundtrack is rankin-esque.

Love Hope stuff!! Proper English engineering done right!

  • 3 2
well that wasn't aggressive at all....
  • 1 1
Mint, sped up.........no way, just great riders. Easy to think so to the untrained eye. LMB
  • 3 4
Every film of Rankin that I've seen has sped up sections. It's subtle, but there. Really spoils it for me
  • 2 1
 @IllestT You are wrong.
  • 1 0
The speed on the left hand corner at 3:44 is an unnatural speed. Defo sped up
  • 1 0
As stated in comments above, watch RAW footage of Adam Brayton in Schladming, this is how hard and how fast he rides. No video trickery necessary. www.vitalmtb.com/videos/member/Schladming-RAW-with-Adam-Brayton,22922/joebo,1905
  • 1 0
I know how pinned he is but in this video there are 2 or 3 clips that are sped up. At the 2nd spot they go to, when they set off, all of a sudden he accelerates at an unnatural rate.
  • 1 0
At 2:48 he doesn't even pedal and all of a sudden rapidly speeds up.
  • 1 2
Rankin films have been quizzed about the sped-up thing in the past and I seem to remember the answer is some bs about footage being "time delineated to fit with the music". That sounds like admitting it to me
  • 13 0
@lllestT Just for the record and people that believe everything in comments sections, "Time Delineated" is something you've plucked out of your brain resulting in a BS paradox often found in the PB comments. I would rather put a stop to this right now. Brayton is that fast, he is only person in the world that could go that fast on those tracks that he practices on, everything in this edit is shot at 720p 50p, on a sony EXr1 the slow mo's are all 50%, nothing is sped up or played with to increase the speed in any way. To me speeding up footage would be missing the whole point of everything a DH shooter is trying to achieve, it would be cheating, like a skate photographer sending in photos of tricks that were never pulled. I have found a few natural techniques over the years to show the speed better, things like, standing 1ft away from the rider as they pass you certainly helps make things look faster, using a wide angle adaptor on a zoom lens helps track and pan to show speed and motion and finding the right angle and cutting each clip so there is no waiting in the edit, Its also hard to see how the steep the hill is. In reply to Littlejimmy97 why would I just speed up 2 or 3 clips, what would be the point? that clip where they roll out together i asked Adam to just roll I have another clip where adam is even faster, then pumping a corner for speed and me stood right next to them, it's just how I film it and they ride it. Also finally I have never retimed a clip to fit the music. because I can edit around any such problems with having to resort to such trickery, Thanks to Hope for the chance to film this section and thanks to everyone else for the support, ta Alex Rankin

Yeah whatever. It's only ever your films that look sped up and over the years, I'm hardly the only person to notice
  • 8 0
I write this from the heart "To me speeding up footage would be missing the whole point of everything a DH shooter is trying to achieve"

and you give me a "whatever" thanks for the respect! much love

Alex Rankin, absolute legend of the MTB filming industry. Thank you for your clarification on this point. You just confirmed exactly what I though about your filming technique. Don't let the haters piss you off, I'm sure if you have any presence on the MTB sites you'll see that 99% of us have loved pretty much everything you do. Your filming and in particular music choice over the years stands out well above most of the time-lapse, slo-mo, dub-step stuff that now floods the market. Never stop making rad films!
  • 1 0
illestT, you should get yourself out to watch the riders in action, you would not think they were sped up.
  • 1 1
I know how fast they are. I race myself.
  • 5 5
Great video, but PLEASE can we not move back to sped up footage like we had 10 years ago.
  • 1 0
