Over the past 8 months, Edge Factor has hosted The Reality Redesigned contest. After pouring over all of the design submissions, it came down to the Top 9 in The GAUNTLET and now, we are proud to announce the Top 3 WINNERS of Reality Redesigned 2012!

From Oakville, Ontario we received a design created by the only female designer that made the top 9. Stephanie’s Flexible Floating Piston suspension design wins the 3rd place! It was a great design and it deserved one of the top spots.

Reality Redesigned 3rd place winner

The DF-350 was a very popular frame design in The People's Choice Award and with the Judges. Daniel from Algonquin, Ontario is the designer and Reality Redesigned's 2nd place winner! Awesome job, Daniel!

Reality Redesigned 2nd place winner

And finally, the GRAND PRIZE WINNER of the Reality Redesigned contest is Cody from Chico, California, the designer of the Thomson to I-Beam Adapter! Edge Factor would like to congratulate Cody on being the first-ever Reality Redesigned Grand Prize Winner!

Reality Redesigned GRAND prize winner

We hope that you have enjoyed watching the Reality Redesigned series and seeing how a design idea transforms into a 3D model! Be inspired to imagine and design new, innovative creations! Thank you to our Students, Judges and Sponsors for making this contest such a fun project.

Sincerely,
The Edge Factor Crew: Jeremy Bout, Pete Hessels and Larissa Hofman

Anyone interested in following the progress on the Electronic Terrain Predictive Suspension project can do so here:

I've managed to get the system working properly on the chip, and should have the servos and actuators in later this week to start progress on actual fork parameter modification. Early testing results have been very promising thought.

How bout a giant pooper scooper that mounts where your front reflector would be and opens/closes with your pedal strokes. "Just because you have to pick up your dogs business, doesnt mean it has to feel like more work. Now, sh*t picking has never been so much fun!" Disclaimer: This product is still in the beginning drafting phases.

I think I'm gonna get 2 friends, call ourselves "Vanguard Faction," and issue a "press release" to PB declaring that we will judge up to 50 really lame, copycat-of-existing-thing "new ideas" and then declare a "winner" that someone already has fabricated for himself but isn't trying to make an e-name for himself in a bogus contest.

A trio of graphic artist-wannabes acting as judges of what is supposed to be MTB technology advancement is hilarious. It's sorta like letting Homer Simpson run a nuclear power plant.

They created opportunities for people who might otherwise have never done something like this. They also engaged experts in each relevant field. Also, they didn't judge anything, the experts did. I hope they do it again.

Dont remeber seeing the video of Stephanie’s Flexible Floating Piston. Wish that frame that had the easily replaceable bearings had won something. Cool anyways great job everyone

Er.. no its called reality REdesigned. Hence an implication the designs would be new and innovative

insomnia, I'm with you on the frame with the bearings that could be press fit/extracted via all the normal hardware that was already on the bike. That was innovative IMO.

That product DOES NOT already exist. There is a Thompson Seat post to standard rail adapter, but not one the adapts to an I-Beam seat...

So after being a little skeptical of this series I see the now how this series can be used to push the career of future engineering students in the biking field and abroad. In other words thank you to the guys at Reality Redesigned and am looking forward to next season.
And to the winners, GO GET EM AND GREAT JOB! Smile)

We should respect the idea that you can only reinvent(redesign) the wheel in so many ways. Some of the best ideas are about refocusing the current technology to be re-purposed for new innovation. That said, from an engineering stand point I think the Thomson to Ibeam is great. Its a simple solution to an obvious problem that no one has addressed. Over 6yrs ago SDG invented the Ibeam system, all the while Thomson has been best post because of its reliability, it was no-brainer for someone to do this. At the moment there is not one product that does this job. Now Thomson customers can use Ibeam saddles without having to give up the most reliable piece....the post. From a manufacturing POV the customer can use all the same hardware (bolts, brass washers, barrel nuts), and all they have to do is machine the larger pieces and provide an extra bolt. Not all the best ideas are about invention.

i definitely think 2nd and 1st place should be switched, and 3rd place isn't that innovative.. then again neither is the thompson to i-beam... this contest should be more about new products and advancing the sport rather than just creating more takes on the same thing...

3rd wouldn't remove the feel of stiction, it would just mean there was a tiny movement before 'ramping up' and then the feeling of over coming the stiction.
2nd - Doesn't seem particularly innovative.
1st - www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=38881 Is this it? or is this the opposite of it?

flag mark1994 (May 29, 2012 at 13:17)
It's the opposite of it but specific to Thompson seatposts or ones of a very similar design. the best thing about it is that it looks as though it would fit a reverb so you could use an I beam saddle on it.
