Is Retallack Lodge BC's next big thing? Yup.

photo
Havoc the house husky. He loves to play and eat live birds.

photo
View out the front door of the lodge.

photo
Trail names that will likely never make it past the drawing board. I was informed by the namer, that they are not in reference to the obvious. Oh-oook.

photo
If you're at Retallack Lodge and this thing gets lit...you're in for it.

photo
Doerfling and Buehler. Lapping up the luxury.

photo
So, what were you guys up to last night?

photo
Overflow barracks for freeriders on the fly. This year was a busy season for Retallack Lodge. It is actually easier to make a list of photographers, filmers, and riders who WEREN'T here this season.

photo
You will see a lot of media come out of here in the next little while. Coastal Crew...working it.

photo
The closest town to Retallack is New Denver. We went to Kaslo. Kaslo is home to the Monster. A bad-ass, iconic Kootenay Mountains trail. It's also part of Retallack's tenure, and on their list of sick spots you can get taken to.

photo
Kaslo's bad-ass too. Check the font used for the fire station sign. Bad-ass.

View of Kootenay Lake from the top of the Monster.

  Fargin rights buddy!

  Nighttime brings games...

photo
  ...and hot tubs.

With local older established trails like the Monster, and new trails right out the front door of the lodge, built by some of BC's best trail and bike park builders (Riley Macintosh and Paddy Kaye). This place has the goods. And then there's the future. Mmm... Big Mountain Alpine? Looks like it.

photo
  Morning snow...in the summer.

photo
Getting to the goods in the alpine isn't easy. But it's worth it.

Retallack started out as a mining town back in the eighteenth century. And the actuall spot where the lodge is now, was said to be the local brothel. Remnants of mining's past still pepper the area. Old scary-as-shit mine shaft.

photo
More remnants of long forgotten stunts from the Kranked days.

photo
photo
At Retallack the natural beauty seems to just take over everything.

photo
There will be blood. Matt Miles.

photo
Kirt Vories and Garett Buehler...shooting the shit.

photo
The only thing better than sending it all day at Retallack is the staff. Thanks ladies for making our stay so sweet.

photo
The food's not so bad either.

photo
See you at Retallack. Johnny Smoke.

Is it just me or are these some of the best photographers around? I love the subject matter, but no one can doubt how good the photos are.

I had no idea there were such amazing trail so close to Kaslo. With a population of only 1000 people, I figured nobody has ever even heard of the place. I volunteered in Kaslo for the Katimavik program, helping out at that fire dept. everyday. Seeing this just makes me want to go back so much more..

Ahhh man! I was in Kaslo on a house boat for a couple of days and even had my bike with me but had no idea about the Monster... Looks sick!

Theres a few of us who ride in Kaslo.. out of the pop. of 1200 people... Love it here though! I work at the local bike shop, come check er out and rip the brown pow of the monster!!! kootenay style.

Being completely honest here, this photoset totally embarrassed what skills I thought I had in photography. Good work.

which is why gorilla glass (samsung phones) is superior, even if your computer is a Mac.
  • 1 0
Except iPhones were the first to use Gorilla Glass, a technology that was developed almost 40 years ago...

i just use crap phones to ride with I fall and hit the thigh pocket way too easily
  • 1 0
I often plan to do so, but then I'm just too lazy to switch the SIM card.

after seeing the sign ''doobie time'' i was a bit disappointed to not see any shot of the steep narrow spine just after. Can't wait to ride the monster again, nothing beat the view up there too

great shots of this beautiful place i live in, but pics dont do the trail justice on how steap and awesome this trail is. it does and it foesnt if you know what i mean. would have loved to seen them ride it they are such RAD riders.

Am i the only one to think that the black and white has kind of ruined it? Nearly all of the photos are under exposed. Don't get me wrong, a few B&W photos can look very arty, and be used to convey a particular look or enhance the detail, but i really don't see the point in doing an entire article/report in B&W. A little colour would have been nice...
Having said that, i love the photo head on of the helmet and goggles, and the photo above it is fantastic, almost looks like an artist's impression.

 Yes u are
  • 1 0
yeah I think B&W is more artistic too. When I see people riding I want to see full color, so I can build all the details in my head.

Hard to believe Retallack is still as unknown to many people. This place is definetly about to kick off. For both skiing and biking. Awesome article by the way!

Amazing photos for this epic, but I'm not thrilled at the idea of "nug" replacing the word photo the way "edit" replaced the word video...
  • 2 0
Margus takes the photos, Conner takes the video... So "nugs" are little golden bits of video that will eventually end up in a sweet little "edit".
  • 1 0
I understand why they're called nugs, I just think it's lame. Only my opinion though. And really, I'm not the one out there breaking my back with a huge gear bag and working hard to get these amazing shots. Margus and Conner can call them whatever they want at the end of the day.

I like black and white photography as much as the next guy, but I can't deal with a full article in it. My eyes have a hard time looking at one picture after the next and I found myself skipping pictures by the end. Excellent shots, but I need a little color.

easily my favourite destination for mountain biking thus far. highly recommend it if you get the chance.

 wooow, so beautiful shots!
  • 2 0
 Lovely shots.
One thing I´ve always wondered, do photogs ride along with all that gear on their bags?
  • 8 1
 yes...
  • 1 0
Good question. I ride with a guy who's got nicknames for his camera packs. One's the "Evil Dwarf".

It isn't easy, but as you can see, it's worth it. Just another one of those unknowns in the world of action sports photography.

My brother rode the monster enduro at the sufferfest...he hasn't been the same ever since! So many big descents in the area. I must go because I've never been!
