The passing of Steve W. DeLay of SWD Bikes

Feb 26, 2008
by Tyler Maine
On Monday, February 25th Steven Wesley DeLay peacefully passed away due to advanced pneumonia. Steve, known to many as “Short White Dude”, was founder, owner and the driving force behind SWD Racing. He was undoubtedly one of the most passionate and dedicated frame builders the industry will ever see.Steve loved all aspects of cycling and, for that matter racing of any type, but his true passion was downhill racing. He would post up on the side of a downhill course all day watching all levels of racers, talking, analyzing and learning from what he saw. Steve went against a lot of the stereotypes and myths surrounding downhill frames by building his frames out of 4130 Steel and utilizing a single pivot chassis. His success both on and off the racecourse has clearly proven over the years that he knew what he was doing. Steve’s vision and goal was to build high performance, high quality, reliable and quiet race-ready downhill rigs with out the inflated price tag. He would do anything for anybody no matter their experience level and barely covered his own expenses with the prices he charged for the frames. If everybody had only one percent of the passion and dedication that Steve had for what he did, combined with his amazingly positive attitude and outlook on life, certainly our world would be a much better place.

SWD Racing will go on. The Team will still be racing and will be carrying with it a new perspective. There will be some downtime as far as sales and production go, but the company will continue to grow and evolve into a bigger and stronger force on the downhill race scene.

If you would like to help the cause, donations to be put towards Steve’s medical bills are being accepted by the following:

Email swdracing@yahoo.com with the dollar amount you would like to contribute. You will then receive an email back with an invoice that leads you directly to a Pay Pal Secure account where you can pay by credit card or bank account number.

If anybody has any questions or concerns that you would like to discuss please contact SWD Racing directly at: swdracing@yahoo.com

Thank you for your support and consideration during this trying time,

The entire SWD Racing Family and Crew.

A sad moment indeed! It's people like Steve that push me to better myself when I build and design my frames. He had awesome dedication and even better vision of what thing should be in this sometimes twisted biking world. I share this vision and hope to one day reach the bar he has put ever so high. Ride in peace and enjoy the great endless singletrack in the sky.

I'm stunned. My sincerest condolences to Steve's family and close friends. Though I've only recently become part of the SWD community, I've definitely felt I've become part of one of the best. Around Steve's company, a community of friendly, helpful and just great people has formed. This, and so many more things are to this man's credit. I genuinely think mountainbiking has lost one of it's best. I wish his family and close friends the best I can during this time, and I'll be racing with him in my thoughts this year. Joe.

Never met him, never rode a bike he created, which is sad. I really wish I could have. The world needs more people like him. The part that makes me angry is people like this dont deserve to go like that. The world sadly is a very injust place.
