You Like This! - Premiere Today in Vancouver and on Pinkbike

Apr 29, 2011
by artbarn
‘You Like This’ is a film which set out to explore the back country and encouraged the riders to push further and discover new beautiful lines. With so much of mountain biking today happening in bike parks, trail centers and sanitized skills parks, Art Barn Productions works to bring back pristine single track, long downhill epics, big jumps and committing lines.

"You like this" is gonna be an awesome mtb movie! I'm gonna be there! Less Dirt Jump and more big bikes with NO slowmotion…
wicked!

‘You Like This’ tells the story of a group of riders at the core of mountain biking. Art Barn was committed to working with a very dedicated crew, who represent many different aspects of our sport, from trail builders, to world cup racers to free riders and even a dirt jumper. However different their styles; the riders all share the unique goal of pushing further into the back country, riding unique natural terrain or exploring infamous trails. Featuring Kevin Landry, where the search for fresh lines in spectacular places has provided some breath taking footage. Miranda Miller, primarily known for her downhill racing prowess on the world cup circuit pushed her comfort zone while shooting for ‘You Like This’ and had this to say about the experience.

…I often find that the majority of my time is spent racing or training and 'You Like This' gave me the opportunity to explore different terrain, have fun and still represent my sponsors. I got to ride some areas and lines that I would have usually never gotten to if not for the hard work of Kevin and Taylor. You're gonna like this." Miranda Miller

The film also features B.C. Cup downhill champion Dan Skogland as well as local up-and-coming Chromag rider Connor MacDougall. Infamous trail builder Ewan Fafard showcases a line he was been building for almost 3 years, as well as rides several other pieces of trail he built specifically for the film. Fafard is joined by long time riding buddy Taylor Bloy, who’s contrasting styles have created a ‘dueling banjos’ style segment. Andrew Teit and Jeremy Norris round out the original cast, and have spent the better part of 2010 (and some of 2011) looking for breathtaking areas, building new lines and battling the weather to shoot them. Ross MacMaster, a late addition, was so excited after seeing the first cut of the film he immediately began scouting locations as well as bribing the crew with his wife’s cooking to secure a part.

Art Barn Productions is a Squamish based action sports media house which has been creating and releasing mountain bike edits over the past several years. Art Barn consists of Taylor Loughran, director, cinematographer and producer as well as Kevin Landry rider, producer and director. For ‘You Like This’ Art Barn has been working closely with editor Jon Hunwick and Justin Hannweyk of Precip Productions to help give the film its edge, color and pace. Art Barn was committed to capturing the action in its purest form and to do so utilized several cutting edge camera platforms such as the Cine-flex, The RED, and The Cannon 7D.

The film was shot throughout British Columbia, with some of the film’s most visually stunning sequences captured in Squamish. From high alpine single track along Brohm Ridge to free ride lines built in the remains of a recent forest fire overlooking Howe Sound and everything in between. The film features the lush coastal rain forests of Mission and North Vancouver contrasted with the harsh desert locations found in Cache Creek and Spence’s Bridge. The final location was the picturesque Pemberton Meadows, to shoot the infamous Tanquil Lake trail. You're going to like it it.

So if timelapses, slowmo, DJ, artsy shots, loading bikes in trucks, walking bikes, helmet cams, heli views, cable lines and all the rest are beat, what's left?
Those of you with all the bright ideas should show us what you've got. And don't say straight up pinned coz there's 5 Earthed movies that beat the piss out of that.
You haters must be so bored riding the same planet over and over that you have too much time left to piss and moan about the accomplishments of others.

Agreed. It's one thing offering advice and suggestions when needed but people talk about these things like it's not subjective at all...

Anyone hating on this needs to get the hell off the internet and out the biking community. These guys have worked hard to produce something super cool, and they're giving it to you for free. STFU and enjoy until you do better, which isn't likely.

I actually think timelapse, unique POV or heli angles, and (gasp) slomo is pretty badass and is helping to elevate our sport. Bit more sophisticated and artful, not your run of the mill 'Shoot it and send it to DVD asap'.... call me crazy.

Sick Teaser- cant wait for the full length.

I can't wait for this film to drop. I think not having slow motion in the film will give watchers a true idea of how fast the riders are going, as well as their skill. And finally; a movie about Freeride, enough dirt jumping and street. It's going to be comparable to Follow Me.

Seeing as everyone seems to be either complaining about or praising the typical bike movie shots around here, i thought i'd add my opinion, because personally, I think I just couldnt appreciate the riding as much without the shots of the rider unloading his bike, hiking up the trail or putting on his goggles, ready to ride.. It just shows the other side of biking, in order to ride those sick trails, you need to suck it up and hike up, in order to throw that gnarly whip, you need to build the jump first.. I think those shots are just as vital to the movie as all the riding shots, the crashes and the behind the scenes of building features. The movie builds up the suspense perfectly and after all that intensifying, I just love hearing the sound of the heli, seeing nothing but black and knowing that I'm about to see some crazy riding!! Props to Artbarn for another sure to be amazing movie, cant wait for the premiere!!! Keep 'em coming!!!

Life Cycles killed mountain bike movies/edits, You Like This is here to resurrect what mountain bike movies should be... Real time footage, hopefully some real, non electro music, real riders riding trails in the MOUNTAIN. Lifecyles sent bike movies two steps back, hopefully this movie will be a step forward like The Collective back in it's day.

Just move. I know it's not that simple for everyone, but why would anyone live somewhere they don't love. I grew up in Connecticut where there are hills, but no mountains. As soon as I graduated high school, I got out of there as fast as possible and moved West to where there are real mountains. Never looked back. I couldn't imagine an existence in a place that doesn't have huge mountains, great downhill trails that are easily shuttled or lift accessed, and epic powder all winter. This life exists, you just need to give up everything else (money, success, live music, hot girls, marriage, kids, ect.) It's the only way to live.
  • 3 0
You fellas need to move before it's too late.
  • 5 2
I'm all for packing up and moving to the mountains........but giving up live music and hot girls!!!!!!!! Hells Nah.

So are you out there in the Tetons listening to your old eight tracks and scamming on ugly broads?
  • 2 0
jjmsmith1, haha that sucks. last thanksgiving my dad and i drove out there to race the ISOC duluth snocross national. before the race we went to practice in aurora and there was already a foot of natural. but here in northern NJ its 60 degrees and sunny with diablo 25 minutes away and plenty of local trails.
  • 3 0
What the girls here lack in hotness, they make up for with coolness. The only thing that sucks about mountain living in a place that got 600+ inches of snow this year is that our trails are still under 10 feet of snow. We won't be riding DH here until mid June, and one of our trails that starts above 9,000 feet will not be ride-able from the top until mid July! So until then I'll just rip my snowmobile, which coincidentally works a lot of the same muscles as biking and gets me in perfect riding shape.
  • 1 3
@Antmav don't know where you live but here in the Tetons in Jackson, WY there are a lot of hot girls now. And we don't get a ton of live music but what we do get is badass. @Tetonlarry, Talked to Lance C. last night and he says there are some sick shuttle trails where we are going wednesday that I didn't know about. So you're psyched. And oh yeah your sled sucks!

By the way mountain life blows, stay living where you live now. I'm sure its much cooler!
  • 1 0
@ PSmithski.........that's what I'm getting at bro. There's no need to give up the hot chicks and live music!!!!!!! You're in Jackson, it's not like you are landlocked in the backcountry of Alaska without electricity. I've been to Jackson three times (never biking, always in the winter) and there was never a shortage of hotties.

I live in the foothills along the Massachusetts/NH border. I can be to the ocean in 30 minutes, skiing/DH'ing at 5-6 resorts in less than 2 hours, Boston in 45 minutes, NYC in three hours, and have a trailhead that accesses 100+ miles of ST right accross the street from my crib. I'll never leave bro. I did the Tahoe winter skiing / Moab summer mtb'ing thing for 4 years once outta college. I'm good.
  • 1 0
A Jackson 10 is a New York 4... Yes, there are some great girls here, but when you go to a big city there is no comparison. The one positive about Jackson, is that we don't have fat people. That's another thing that is shocking when you go other places. The east coast has awesome mountain biking. I can't deny that. The problem is once winter comes, there's no real skiing. I need both; Summer riding and 500 inches of average snowfall each Winter.

I'm english, there's like 3 places in great britian with mountains and big hills. One place where you get your bike nicked when you leave you door step. Another my family would kill me if I moved and the 3rd isn't exacly the best place to live cause it's got really bad weather. Plus I'm only 13, I keep begging my mum to move to America, Let's see what happens! Big Grin

 TazDaMadBiker

3 places..let me guess... Liverpool, Liverpool and Liverpool? Didn't know Liverpool had big hills though.
  • 1 0
Haha, not all Liverpool, I have a few mates (girls...) I know up there :-) I'm talking like Scotland/ Wales pretty much like northern area's. Big Grin

 No slow-mo. Sweet!!!!!!!

Now, if we can just get film makers to rid their films of the mandatory time lapsed panoramic shot of either the sun setting/rising or the clouds rolling in/out. Damn, that shot pisses me off. I met Warren Miller a few years ago and asked him to stop adding that foolish shot to his films. He looked at me with a straight face and said "You know, that makes a lot of sense", and started laughing.

I second that. Images of riders WALKING their bikes in a RIDING MOVIE needs to end, too. Anyone else? Come on, pedal that thing. Even if it's just for the camera. Buncha hooey.
  • 15 1
i wanted them to walk though.. added to the moody forest around them.
  • 3 3
I confess to just skipping bike vids to when the riding starts. In this video, about 1:30. Loved the full speed style though, slow motion gets used way too much on pinkbike.
  • 9 0
But like Dave Chappell demonstrated; everyone/ thing looks cooler in slowmotion.....

At regular speed its just a guy riding down the greenway on a cruiser bike....

Ok, now lets see that same shot ....in slow motion....

Now that guy's a badass pro downhiller plowing through a rock garden at Fort Williams...

Things I'm done with in bike movies:

Unloading a bike out of the truck shot.
Hike a bike shot.
Putting the helmet and goggles on shot.
Sun rising and setting shot.

I'll let it slide with this one since it looks great. I know where I'm gonna be Friday night...
