With the sun dipping behind the coastal clouds, Saturday evening was looking to be a great setting for the Sea Otter Classic Speed n Style. The best slopestyle, dirt jump, and race riders were pitted against each other in an event that tested rider's speed and style. Which will prevail? The majority of the riders were slope and dirt jumpers but they showed that their speed wasn't to be out by their tricking. Semenuk and McCaul displayed their skill and rose to the finals. Pierre Edouard Ferry placed 3rd and Brandon Semenuk edged out McCaul for 1st place.

Speed and Style explained: To win you must show speed and style! The riders drop in on mirrored courses, one is red course and one is black. The first thing they hit is a trick jump and are judged on style, the rider who does a better trick over the jump will get a .5 second advantage. Then the riders must race the pump track and then hit the jump one more time and judged again on style. If a rider takes both of the the tricks jump points he has a 1 second advantage! So maybe one rider is faster then the next, but if he cant do a better trick then other rider then he might not win.

can someone explain the point system to me? How many points taken of per second ????

i have been wanting to do a local event like this for a while but judging is so hard.

-Basically two laps -Both riders are timed -The riders get two opportunities to hit the freestyle ramps in the middle. -The rider who does the BEST trick over that jump gets 0.5seconds off their time -Rider with lowest time wins Simple

did anyone notice how brandon had his Iphone in his pocket when he was racing....... just shows mtbing is the best sport by far......

I don't think I get it, why does having an iPhone in ones pocket constitute a sport as being the best sport by far?
  • 5 1
because we're relaxed and laid back, yet still compete and care and have passion for the sport. we can have a good time and dont have sticks shoved up our asses like lots of other sports' athletes do. can you picture a road biker racing with an iphone bulging out of his spandex?

Best can be highly subjective, so let's not start forcing opinions/positions on other people and a fight now. I personally don't think it is a good enough reason for mtb to be called as the best sport; after all, it is just 1 person, in 1 competition, from 1 discipline of biking.

Semenuk really love ridin' hes bike!

looks sick, really fun event! but seems like half a second isn't that much, if like jared graves came and just gassed it round would he win overall without any tricks? or is is not long enough?

You can easily say the same things for any sport airbornmtnbiker.

What if a person have a great style but not the fastest? Can he win?
  • 1 0
 nice idea...
  • 3 0
By style...it means tricks. So the person with the best "style" doesn't win...they just get a 1second advantage overall.
  • 2 0
 ^This man knows his stuff.
  • 3 0
Not really. There's basically 2 rules. The judging is almost as simple as downhill.
  • 1 0
^^ pretty much, there were a few runs where one guy got the style points but the other beat him by over a second, so some guys weren't doing any tricks and just going for speed and sometimes it paid off for them sometimes it didnt.

 Looks epic... Smile
