Sequence Saturday 27 is a sequence of Sam Reynolds double back at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes from photographer Ale di Lullo.Sequence Saturday 27 is a sequence of Sam Reynolds double back at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes from photographer Ale di Lullo.
Sam Reynolds crashed while attempting a double back flip at Crankworx in Les 2 Alpes and broke a vertebrae in his back. Pinkbike was in touch with him at the hospital and he had this to say about it:

bigquotesSo for a while the double flip has been my almost 'signature trick' I guess as I've done it in a few videos and contests lately. I have only done them on jumps I have been comfortable with however, which is probably partly what went wrong here! The landing was too steep for the takeoff, so even the smallest overshoot meant you were going to the bottom. That in addition to the tailwind caused me to go too far down the landing, over rotate and loop out onto my ass!

I was rushed to hospital and have one broken vertebrae in my back. It hurts and the back brace is uncomfortable but there are people here much worse off than me so I'm just happy to be up and mobile so quickly. I hope to fly home on Friday and will immediately start building features for a huge incredible comeback video!! So feel free to like my Facebook page or follow me on twitter or Instagram to see what I'm up to in the next few months!

 Dear Sam...
After many tests, we have diagnosed you with having G.B.S. (Gigantic Balls Syndrome).
(Your parents must be so proud)
This can cause over rotation and unbalance while flying through the air.
We are in the midst of developing a tie down system, so that you can harness those puppies safely.
I'm sorry that you had to break a vertebrae so that I could win a Evoc Bag. One helluva bag...I've been told.
Healing Vibes...
Signed....
Your Doctor.

P.s. All of the nurses want to date you!!

I know competitions are these days judged almost as much on style as on technical ability. With the increase in difficulty and size of the course elements could it be a time for a slight shift in attitudes towards putting the riders safety at least on the same level. Ok back ten years ago people who wore all the pads ended up looking like power rangers, but we are constantly shown how improvements in body armour have revolutionised comfort, movement, cooling and generally making them a more discreet object. In a crash like this a back protector could be the difference between a couple of weeks out with some bruising or a lengthy hospitalisation. Companies like Leatt put a lot of emphasis on branding their product as cool, and as such many people wore the product even without gloves or knee pads, seems a little disproportionate. I just hope we begin to look up to those who take their safety seriously in competitions where many of us wouldnt attempt the jumps but some pros seem happy to head out in a vest. The trickle down effect from watching pros using body armour to other riders and the young generation can only be a good thing too. Anyway, nice sequence and get well soon Sam!

as much as i agree with you that safety should be a consideration, I dont think there needs to be massive enforsements on it, these guys are professionals its their job to do this kind of stuff, they know what they are doing. Just remember it wasnt all that long ago that Downhill was going down some fire roads on rigid bikes and stuff like this was non existent. As the course and the sport develop so do the risks with it.

No amount of pads are gonna help you if you land that hard on your arse!! Hence the "compression" fracture. Startlingly common injury in ski/snowboarding.....

Double the trouble; double the fun
I do 5 backflips when I do my run
Head at my feet; feet and my head
Looking straight down at my tire tread

I am a bird; I am a plane
I am a zebra; it's all the same
I am a moose; I am a cow
I show confusion with a raised eyebrow

I like to talk; I like to sing
I like to win and win and win

The best riders push the sport on more and more. Its just a shame that being a rider pushing the sport means you crash harder, if it wasn't for Sam ect the sport wouldn't be evolving at the speed it is. Get riding soon and already stocked for the come back vid!!

Remember what they say Sam old buddy...

The best medicine is to laugh
This will cut your pain in half
Drink your dink and eat your green
Even if it's a rubbish canteen
Flirt with all the nurses you meet
And soon you'll be back on your feet

So we'll hit the town, drinking the drink, flirt with women and having a laugh...... Just thinking of you Smile hope you can join us all soon, get better as quick as possible buddy, your a legend Smile Smile

Dude, broken bones are crappy. I would know. The tough thing is waking up everyday and thinking "Man, I'm gonna go riding and shred and- wait. I can't." Breaking your back is one of the hardest things to overcome, but if anyone can do it, it's Sam Reynolds. Recuperate and don't come back too early. That could ruin your career. So get well soon shredder! Hope you can get back on your bike soon!!
