Shimano Winter Series Round 3

World Cup Champion and Trek World Racing team rider Aaron Gwin dominated both Super D and DH at last weekend’s Third round of the Shimano Winter Series at Fontana.

An occasional competitor at Fontana, this was Gwin’s first Fontana’s Super D race so he really didn’t know what to expect. Riding his Trek Slash trail bike outfitted with a full XT build, he found out that the Super D was to his liking “The Super D course was awesome this weekend. It was fun doing a more relaxed race with all your buddies. Not to mention it's great training!” noted Gwin.

Team Hyper’s Waylon Smith, who won the previous two Super D races, made a couple small mistakes and couldn’t make up the time on Gwin, but still finished a close 2nd. Smith was followed closely by the up and coming talented ODI Trek Satellite team rider Jon Buckell. A few seconds back was Smith’s Hyper teammate Eric Carter. The top 4 riders were all riding full Shimano Deore XT equipped bikes with XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleurs.

Sunday’s Downhill podium was an all Shimano affair with Gwin taking the win in dominating fashion by besting second place Team Hyper rider Eric Carter by 3.34 seconds. Third and fourth places went to KHS team riders Kevin Aiello and current National Champion Logan Bingelli. Rounding out the podium was Gwin’s Trek World Racing teammate Neko Mulally.

Yeah...EC is still diggin the view from the podium right behind Gwin!! Keep taking on the young pups mister, I like it.

Everyone keep an eye on Waylon too. Fantastic all around athlete and can throw down at pro level in everything on dirt, DH, Enduro, and even XC.

Gonna be fun to see what these guys do with Hyper.

Also, stoked that Gwin is out mixing it up by doing the Super D. It is good for the sport when guys of his caliber show that they are all mountain bikers not just dedicated to DH. I've seen him at Ray's MTB Park ripping jumps and riding BMX too.

Im pretty sure someone asked if Enduro/Super D was in Gwin's future in the Gwin interview and he said, No. so....

Gwinn , I predict will dominate for some time to come, much like Nico V. did.

I highly doubt that, haha. But that'd be the tightest way to do it. Kill it for a few years, then just disappear to Africa like Dave Chappelle.

If they came out to the 2nd winter series race than they were undercover and spectating... 4th winterseries race is in about a week and a half. Maybe dan or gee will show up and give it a go for the local crowd in socal.

Because they are sponsored (or their team rides Shimano).

160 (you can tell by the placement of the axle on the lowers) - and I want to bet it's a Talas.

.....with a flat tire, or he was too busy signing autographs. (JK, geesh) It would of been cool to see the GT team at Fontana since it's close to where they train in Cali.
