On Friday night, while competiing at the first stop of the Dew Tour dirt jump finals, Stephen Murray bailed out of a double backflip attempt. According to other riders, he only made it 1 1/2 rotations before he jumping out of it and landing on his head, breaking his neck and stopped breathing. He was revived and rushed to the local ER. Stephen had crushed his 3rd, 4th and 5th vertebrae and was paralyzed from the neck down. Since then, he has ungone the first surgery of what could quite possibly be many in an attempt to give him some sort of a normal life. After the first 7 hour surgery Stephen surprised his friends and family by shrugging his shoulders and having some sensation on his upper left side of his body.
Stephen and his family are going to need help from the cycling community in his battle with his injuries and I'm asking for your help too. Stephen has always been an inspiration to me and thousands of other riders alike...not just BMXers!
Thanks
Carter
Here is some infomation about Stephen and the info you will need to make donations:
Stephen Murray Fund-
Stephen Murray is a BMX Athlete that could use help from the BMX and cycling community. Stephen is a professional dirt jumper that is well known for his amazing tricks like double back flips, 360 back flips, turndown back flips and so much more.
Stephen Murray came to the United States from New Castle Great Britain over 10 years ago with a dream of riding with the best athletes in the sport. He came over here originally as a BMX racer but quickly took to Dirt Jumping and Freestyle in the scene of Huntington Beach and Sheep Hills.
2001 and 2002 marked the biggest year for Stephen Murray of his career. He won the Gold Medal in Dirt Jumping at X Games and back to back wins at the Gravity Games, the two biggest contests at the time.
Stephen is quoted on his own riding style, "I go 110%, go big and send it!" (EXPN.com)
On Friday June 22nd at the AST Dew Tour BMX Dirt Finals in Baltimore, MD, Stephen Murray took a horrific fall on the final set of the dirt section while sending a double back flip. Stephen has received career ending injuries to his spinal cord and vertebrae.
Unlike the NFL or other major professional sports which have unions that provide funds to athletes who are injured, BMX has nothing like this. BMX however is much more like a family than any other sport. Now is the time we need to reach out and support one of our family members like never before.
The injuries that Stephen sustained are no doubt going to affect him for a life time. Medical bills alone can reach astronomical dollar amounts. As a BMX community we have the power to help him. Stephen is a young 27 years old and is the financial provider for a wife and two young children.
This message has the potential to reach millions. Even if you are only able to donate $1 if we did it all together we can accomplish a great deal. This is for real, this is an opportunity to help out one of the most loved riders in our sport. Please find it in your hearts to contribute any dollar amount that you can, and say a prayer for Stephen Murray and his family in this difficult time.

This is terrible news. He was an amazing rider, the most exciting dirt jumper in the world in my opinion, and i pray that advances in technology can give him as much mobility as possible. My thoughts and prayers are with Stephen and his family in the hope that can make as complete a recovery as possible. I am certain that the cycling community in general is able to help and hope the response will be as generous as possible.
very, very sad news. Its always tough when someone goes down hard. my heart goes out to him and his family. hopefully he/his sponsors have some life insurance policies etc. so he is not entirely dependent on donations from the riding community, although Im sure there will be lots. Its such a shame to hear of things like this but it happens I guess. Best wishes to Stephen Murray and family.
the thign about this type of inury is its not up to any technology theres nothing technology does, however tons of pople walk again after breaking there neck, its all in your mind, and stephen knows that.its relay true, its not a miracle, hes already getting some movement back in his bodie and although he will never compete again, his only goal is to walk again and he will.stay strong. he has evryones support. theres no dought he will get past this.hes defantly my inspiration.

this is really sad, he is an amazing rider. terrible news. hopefully he'll regain some sort of movement, even if he cant ride his bike itd be good if he gets his movement back
thanx carter for posting this message. i'm totally speechless, he is my fav dirt bmxer in the world, i cant believe that happened to him. everyone will remenber him forever for his runs at the 2001 xgames, when he totally destroyed the dirt j. comp with his sick combos. for the ones who dont know him, this guy was a dj messiah, he was the 1st one to add 2 extratricks to a flip n one of the firsts to doubleflip at dirt, that guy didn't like to do just a trick at each jump. even at the qualifying the day before the crash, he blew the crowd away with his sick combos. u can watch him pullin a flip/x-up to turndown, and no.footed flip to turndown at the dew tour last week, at here:

if you could set up a paypal account to accept donations, it would make it a lot easier for a bunch of people to make donations. best of luck.

Almost a year after the devestating accident that left him paralyzed, Stephen Murray has opened up to EXPN the Magazine (a special insert to ESPN the mag). In the interview (an expanded version which appears online.
Rather than a Q & A or a story told about Murray, this is told from his point of view — starting from when he just woke up after the accident to the present day. The good news is about his progress. The name of the article is “I Fully Believe I’ll Walk Again†and that’s what he is working toward.
Here’s an excerpt from the article, updating readers on where he is right now.
My body is rewiring itself. It’s connecting again. It’s going to be the longest road of my life and the hardest thing I’m ever going to go through. But I have patience. My doctors are blown away, but they know the mindset of an action sports athlete. First I was a C2 complete, then all of a sudden I was a C3 incomplete, and then an Asia A, which is no feeling below point of injury. Now I’m an Asia C. I can feel touch everywhere on my body. It’s huge progress, absolutely awesome. They’re massive steps yet, but I fully believe that I’ll walk again. I’m not going to stop until I do. And if I don’t, well, then I’m going to die from old age. It’s a long path. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
