Interbike 2008 - Tomac Primer 220

Oct 10, 2008

The name Tomac is synonymous with racing and winning when it comes to mountain biking. Johnny T did it all back in the day - he raced road, XC, Dual and Downhill and he kicked a lot of asses at all these disciplines. Through his knowledge and experience, along with his good buddy Doug Bradbury's abilities, Tomac bikes was born.

Check inside to learn more about the Tomac Primer 220 from Johnny T himself and Joel Smith:

Johnny T tells us about the brand and what he's been up to lately:

Joel Smith tell us why the Primer 220 is so rad:

The Tomac DH legacy continues with the Primer 220, a full blown DH bike designed to take on the toughest courses and win. The Primer 220 is the work of Mountain Bike Hall of Famer and Manitou-suspension fork founder Doug Bradbury, who's experience during Johnny T's pro racing days led him to design another bike of World Cup heritage. Featuring 220mm of luscious travel, the Primer has enough CNC-machined aircraft-grade 6061 T-6 aluminum to launch a space program.

my friend who is on the kenda team has the primer in Black, it was the only one made. He loved it while he had it and when i rode it down the trails i though that it was an amazing racing bike. So for everyone thinking about one i would strongly sugest getting one. He now has a white a frame because his top tube buckled on him. :/

I dont understand why every manufacturer still takes the single pivot approach. I mean as long as it is attached to the front triangle its a single pivot. Just because it uses the travel of the rear shock doesnt make it not a single pivot. WOW ok....

Stop COMPLAINING about similarities with other GREAT frames... DH has been FS for +15 years now... why don't all the similarities experts above come up with a new frame design that doesn't weigh like a Harlydavidson!

BTW: All the newborn cocky teenagers that compares this frame design with Norcos and Treks should start researching more further back in time than 07... how about Giant team DH -05?, Scott High octane?

I'm no expert! just SICK of all totally meaningless comments...

f*cking awesome frame!

flag time-bomb (Oct 10, 2008 at 7:20)
I totally agree. This linkage has been around for a very long time. Mountain Cycle has used it for years. Go way back and the GT RTS used it too. The list goes on. In spite of the fact that the Session 10 uses a similar linkage, they are very different frames. Look at the pivot location. They aren't even close to being in the same area. This will give the bikes very different ride characteristics. If anything, this bike is similar to the Foes DH frame. Similar linkage and pivot location. But even this doesn't mean anything. The linkage can be tuned completely different from one another. Bottom line, you gotta ride them to really compare them. Stop looking at photos and drawing conclusions. Do some research by reading and riding to educate yourself. Alright, enough, get out and ride.

flag oryxdd33 (Oct 11, 2008 at 20:55)
i see what you mean, but the rear chock placement is higher on the foes, mainly cuz the eye to eye is friggin huge on the foes shock! but the linkage is a different near the bb. look on foes website..the foes is closer to a virtual pivot then this, and the linkage between rear shock and frame is a smaller piece. both are sick bikes though

there is no frigging similarities between foes motolink and vpp linkages.motolink is basically singlepivot design, vpp is not.

Boy.... you guys aren't very bright. The 17.3 in a small is the chainstay length... not the BB clearance. Doushe bags. It's 14.84 which is pretty run-of-the-mill for bikes like that.

flag erod (Oct 15, 2008 at 12:30)

Ok there doushy... then I guess the V10, DHR, Demo8, 224 Evo, DHI, Legend, Judge, Norco Team DH, Shocker, Wilson, DHS Mono, Socom, Gambler, Session 88 and Session 10 aren't DH race rigs? Because last time I checked they all had a BB height of 14 in and up, some of them being up near 15 inches too. Alors ta geule salope.

Not really jmo. Like mat mentioned, they are frame only, so any shop selling a complete will use their own choice of parts, hence me saying 5-8k for a complete.

The frame yea, 2-4 grand is fine being some shops have higher prices that others. All depends on the shop. MSRP means nothing any more these days.

I rode the Primer220 a few days ago here in Berlin (Germany). Waaahhhh I did not want to get off of it. It was like me and the bike where made for eachother. You place your butt on the saddle and it feels like the softest chair you ever sat in. It was equipped like in the video with the Fox fork. The price was 4500 €. I asked one of the salespersons (big store here with 4000 sqkm) if they had it in L (the one I was riding was M). He said yes and showed me a price of 2000 €. I said to myself "Dirk! Order now!" I ordered the bike. When I had left the store the salesperson called me on my mobile and wanted me back in the store. He admitted that he was only selling the frame. I LOL and instantly forgived him. He was very sorry :] But of course the price was irrealistic. I made a storno. Now I think of buying the frame only... Maybe I can get it for 1500 € when the new frame arrives... The bike is a dream. Look at the rear suspension. One joint only. That is the way it is supposed to be!!!! No wonder it reacts so soft and instantly.

My son finished top ten (junior) in the world on a Primer. The Val Di Sole track was the most technical, rough, slippery, out of control track that we have ever seen. The Primer handled it like it was on rails. Tomac have certainly done their homework in building the best bike that can handle the toughest conditions.
