Warning: This helmet cam sequence about Cédric crash at La Réunion Island may be shocking for the more sensitives of us. Indeed, Cédric's life was not held by a thread due to a femoral bleeding.
I feel like we need some medic mondays as well as tech tuesdays after seeing that! I'm really impressed how well everyone reacted in that situation, including Cedric. What a legend!
I could actually see that being a really good idea. Things like how to stop bleeding, pop back a dislocated joint, and make a makeshift splint or sling.
very rarely is it better to relocate a joint on the spot... never know what could end up being relocated with it... bits of joint capsule, arteries, nerves, you never know! much better to get out and let a pro do it if at all possible!
blitz you've got a good point, but depending on where you when injured the relocation can make a world of a difference for the injured. I've had my fair share of injuries, all from skiing actually. I've separated my shoulder, broken my clavicle, had my ACL tear the top of my tibia clear off (thank god i had growth plates that gave way) but when i dislocated my shoulder i did the same thing where i thought id better let a professional do it, an hour into having it out of the socket my muscles were involuntarily convulsing from the pain and my vision was blurring, this had never happened to me before, then literally immediately after the doctor in the er put it back in 98% of the pain was gone, no painkiller involved. If i was out in the woods it would not have been a fun journey, my body began to shutdown from the pain when i was sitting in the ER and it was only a dislocated shoulder, i imagine my body would have shut down a lot sooner if i was in the middle of the woods as I'm sure i would have subconsciencely have began to panic. like i said I've had some killer injuries and stopping the pain can be one of the most important things you do. Also the doctor said i must have pinched a nerve while it was floating around as i no longer have sensation on the skin on the top of my shoulder, it was suppose to come back after a month, it is now a years later and I'm as numb as Lew Wilkinson's wank.
I don't think anything stabbed him. From what I understand its a compound pelvic fracture that cut his femoral artery.
I'd be curious to see the more gory unedited footage to get a better idea of how it went down. They took a lot of the bloody parts off when they edited.
Something tells me pinkbike could get into some legal trouble giving medical advice. I agree it's not a bad idea, unfortunately just the world we live in
I'll just give my own 2 cents... I have years of experience as an EMT. If you have a broken bone or dislocated joint, check to see if you have pulses and sensation distal to the injury (farther from your heart/core). If you have no sensation or pulse distal to the injury, better give it one good try to re-align the bone or joint. For example, if you dislocated your shoulder and you have no pulse at your wrist, you have a serious problem that needs to be addressed immediately, or you risk losing your limb. This is actually pretty rare, but good to know anyhow. If you do have distal pulses and sensation, and you can get help in a reasonable amount of time, just splint/support the injury and go to the ER. As far as what happened to CG, if you're alone out there you have about zero chance of surviving that. Without help, you can't really put enough pressure on your own femoral artery to stop yourself from bleeding out, which will happen in a matter of minutes. Like 2.
Yeah I thought this would be a good idea as well but as BryanBobo said that could end up coming back to bite PB. If there was a way for PB to post some decent advice on the basics and not get in trouble when some kid messes it up on the trail it would certainly be really useful.
don't think they would get in trouble as long s the information wasn't misleading or incorrect and proper disclaimers were used. I haven't seen youtube get in trouble yet? I think it would be a good idea to show ppl how to deal with various injury's while out in the bush before they can get proper medical attention it's definitely better than not knowing!
Trust me - any good lawyer if they wanted to, could make a case out of it. For Christ sake. People have to put warning labels on peanuts to let people know they may contain nuts for risk of being sued. People will sue over anything these days.
Agreed. Plus why in the world should PB try to reinvent the wheel and teach these courses over the website when there are plenty of great public funded courses through just about all community colleges and even private courses. First Aid, Advanced First Aid, First Responder, Wilderness First Responder, EMT, Wilderness EMT, etc.
This ain't like tech Tuesday. They're hands on courses for a reason. People should take initiative and do the classes on their own.
If there is one thing you want to carry with you that will save a life, its quick clot. We were trained and used it in the marines and it is made for arterial wounds such as this.
Great quick action on behalf of Cedric and his buds. He could have easily bled out in less than 5 mins with that.
No we don't need medic Mondays. That was the worst video I've ever seen. It wasn't because of the blood, it was the urgency of the whole event and Cedric repeating how he's going to bleed out and die. Ahhh never again. So happy he made a quick recovery... relatively speaking.
There are 3 main reason why he is still alive 1) got pressure on it right away and kept it on, 2) he was clam, which kept his heart rate lower so it did pump as much blood 3) helicopter.
An in the field external femoral artery rupture survival rate is around 25% Got to love when people do all the right things in a bad situation.
I don't understand why I got neg proped so much for asking you your story and why you got postitive prop'ed for your BS. I think you may have multiple PB accounts or a bunch of PB groupie followers.
It's because it sounded like you didn't even care his health you just wanted to hear another gruesome story. And his got positive because that shit was hilarious.
Thanks for explaining it for me @midbestdj. I'm sorry I did want to hear another gruesome story. But I joined PB to help me become a better rider from watching pro video's and I'm getting way more horror accident coverage telling me I'm way past my limit. You know we are all thinking, "if that is all it took for a world champ to be on his death bed, what are we really putting our family's threw"?. So again, sorry for asking. But if it were me who went threw such a ordeal. I would not joke about it and want to share it with all the MTB peoples so they know how to be prepared. To me, @Bigbossman is the real "sit back and watch other's crash person" because he found my question funny. But it makes sense because he's along way away from any serious mountains to know the seriousness of my concern. CG almost died and it still was not enough for him to not make some lame joke that all his multiple accounts propped. This is what he really said. "I"m a b*t*h, that's why I start a conversation and not want to finish it. I got hurt really bad but I'm not telling". So why bring it up in the first place? Just like a b*t*h.
Every day you get in a car and drive could be your last day. You never know if you might get taken out by a drunk driver or a criminal on the run. The thing is you just never know and can't let the possibility of death dictate your life decisions. Live every day to the fullest because you never know when it will be your last.
I agree to some extent with SithBike. If it was truly something that the guy did not want to talk about, he would not have mentioned it. He got negative propped due to mob mentality, in my opinion. His story was hilarious, but I would have preferred he actually said it after his fake story.
You said nothing wrong @richierocket, so I have no clue why you got negative prop'ed so bad? I have no idea whats going on with the prop system. But it would be nice to see a total plus prop and total minus prop as well as the plus or minus score we have now. Like your last comment is at minus 2 right now, simply for asking what you said wrong. This is why I think some stupid "poser" people have multiple PB accounts. It's just not making any sense.
Why would people make multiple accounts just like their comments? I could not see any one doing that. And also, who cares? I don't see why it even matters what "props" you get on these. If it makes you mad that you get neg propped then just stop commenting. It's that simple really.
@ PLC07: You could be right, I didnt hear anything, but it looks like a brake lever injury, my friend did that to hinself but luckily missed the artery, and it was in the same place
Martin- there was a stump/rock sticking outta the ground that caught him. BTW why do people care so much about "props"? It's an imaginary number, guys... relax. People will still click on your comment to read it and if not, who cares?
@martin: I could be right or wrong, that's what I read in the comment section of another website from someone claiming to know them so who knows if it's true. To be honest I'm wondering why they bothered editing it all together and putting it on the internet while not even taking the time to explain, even briefly, what actually happened.
The crazy thing is though, having done remote (wilderness) first aid with basic life support. they never came up with a scenario for anything remotely this acute. Just amputations mostly. These guys did - as most people have said - a frigging ridiculous job to stay calm, improvise and save this guys life.
Before I broke my collarbone in the forest while I was riding alone 2 years ago, I couldn't imagine that I may brake my bones by riding my bike, I couldn't imagine I may pass out somewhere in forest and wait for help in despair. Now it sounds funny but I thought I was going to die just because of a broken collarbone. Thanks to some horrible memories, now I know so much more about first aid than before and I am always aware to the fact that crashes may happen everywhere and every time.
By the way, watching CG is having such an huge crash and those bloods, oh my god, so hard to look at.
We also need to remember always to ride with a buddy, and if possible to bring a satellite phone or some other means of getting in touch with emergency services. Should CG have not had friends with him that day, this would have ended much worse
Here in B.C. a level one first aid is only a weekend course. If you can't afford it,ask your employer to help.
Worksafe requires someone at your job to have some training. So at the very least you can write it off on your income tax
.
This shows you why the doctors tell you to stay off your bike for quite a while, his pelvis was still weak after only a year of recovery and hence his bone easilly snapped and caused this bleed on a minor crash. Ignoring medical adivce to get back riding sooner, could have cost him his life.
Stopping a femoral arterial bleed is as much luck, as it is training. You need both at the same time. Where its severed, how accessible it is has a lot to do with it. Having said that, Cedric (and his friends) has some huge, huge stones to stay that calm in the face of death. I'll drink to all those guys tonight.
@ Jamesb15uk: for fs: he didn't break his pelvis in that one. The injury was completely unrelated to his first crash! He just had major bad luck cutting the vein on the other side with his handlebars or brake lever.
This scares me...The actual crash seemed like a regular crash..but it just goes to show how shit can happen. Cedric is a boss and pulled out of it. Have a good Recovery!
I often start thinking: What if this happened to me? Is it really worth it? It scares me a lot. I don't know why i keep struggling with this "is it really worth it" - attitude... But on the other hand I wouldn't get lucky without riding my bike...
His riding buddies saved his life, every one should have a basic understanding of first aid out on the trails, we all crash probably just as hard all the time
CG was so calm what an absolute legend, heal well
What I don't quite understand is what exactly happened. How on earth did his happen? Did he land on a perturbing jagged sharp rock sticking out of the ground or something? Really bazaar.
I believe he fractured his pelvis which ruptured his femoral artery and pierced through his flesh. If neither he nor his friend had known to apply pressure we would've mourned the loss of a great biker and personality.
It seems that on french media they said he crashed on his handlebar and brake lever. It just went trough his flesh and badly cut his femoral artery... The death was not that far from him... When you just look at how fast he bleeds and how much blood he lost, this is a miracle he's still alive. Hopefully, CG is one hell of a tough guy and the guys that helped him sure made the good choices in no time...Which is good!! It would have been a disaster if he passed away!
Most likely he cut his femoral vein - it's closer to the surface than the artery. A large vein like that can 'pump' a lot of dark blood but the femoral artery would literally jet bright red blood out. Injuries in this area aren't all that uncommon when your cross up your wheel and take the bar to the groin. If I'm right, it's a lot less severe injury in terms of recovery than his pelvis/ hip fractures.
I'm in the bleeding/ injured business and that video made me pale and sweaty. Get well, CG!
According to the site 26in.fr his groin was perforated by the handle bar and/or brake lever when the front wheel turned 90 degrees and stoped, after sliding on something.
Sure it will be easier to recover from a cut artery...But the death was once again pretty close...CG is currently doing his recovery in a specialised center in South of France
If thats true, its still pretty bizaar to think that the blunt end of a handlebar, or a break lever would be able to puncture into you. :\
This also gives some of us out there a good example of why riding with a buddy or buddies, is kind of a good thing. Especially if your doing some DH riding.
A friend of mine did nearly the exact same thing almost 12 years ago now, crashed on some rollers on the local bmx track and his brake lever managed to puncture his artery. Lost a ton of blood couldnt figure out what happend untill we had a look at the lever...
It's sh_t like this that lead me to become an EMT. I wanted to be better prepared for my friends on the trail or on the river if things went bad. Now I'm a Physician Assistant student and even more prepared. There's a saying when you're the one in charge of a dire situation, "first, check your own pulse." Meaning, be sure you're calm before you can think straight enough to do what needs to get done. CG's buddy did a great job. I like the idea of Medic Mondays.
There is a product called Quick Clot, which I keep in my first Aid kit for multi-day backpacking trips. It was initially developed for military applications to prevent soldiers from losing a lot of blood. People here may want to think about keeping a package in their Camelbak if you're going to be out in the backcountry.
Nice call on the Quick Clot! I carry it almost every ride. One time I went OTB and I was alone, end of handlebar hit my inner thigh and the swelling was instantaneous. Thought I had ruptured my femoral artery, called the wife to let her know where to pick up my body. MRI showed I missed it by millimeters, scary shit. Still have an ODI scar.
CG and his friends taking care of business.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20154537 I would not be so sure about its fantastic effect - simple pressing is the most important thing, as they did, fortunatelly.
I would also recommend having a tourniquet (sp?) stashed, just in case. I also agree with some of the comments on here that Pinkbike should do a Wilderness first aid segment for riders. Knowing when, where and how much pressure to apply to a major artery that's been cut should be one of the videos.
I can speak from first hand experience that hemostatic agents DO work. WoundStat is a "good" product, at best. QuikClot ACS sponge and chitozan bandages have worked for me in the pas and they are easy for doctors to debried. You cannot use a hemostatic alone though, you have to pack the wound with a "powerball" or something to ensure direct pressure with your hemostatic is kept. As far as using a tourniquet, a good rule of thumb is 2 - 4 inches above the wound or 2-4 inches above a joint. And to twist until the bleeding stops. After applying a TQ, you can further asses the wound, bandage with your hemostatic of choice and try loosening or reducing your TQ to salvage the limb. I have seen TQs in place for up to 8 hours with no long term effects. If your buddy goes down just remember a simple acronym. HABC. Hemorrhage, Airway, Breathing, Circulation. After you control the bleeding, the H then becomes Hypothermia.
Not a doctor, but I hear that quickclot is serious stuff so do your research on when or when not to use it. I've heard the military is using something different now since soldiers were to often using the quickclot and then the surgions can't repair the damaged area blah blah. Again, I don't know squat, but do some research before using quickclot I guess.
The old quick clot powder is where the problem was. The granules ran the possibilty of causing emboli and would burn into the skin and become an issue for doctors to debreid. The new stuff is an impregnated gauze and has little to no isothermic reaction and doesn't cause problems the old powder did. Back in the early part of the war I was using the powder in a windy setting and got that stuff in my mouth...painful.
Correct me if I'm wrong but in this case, even if CG used quickclot, wouldn't he still have internal bleeding because the artery was cut. Quickclot would just seal the surface wound?
The agent in quick clot adheres to the source of the bleed with direct pressure and correct application. Like I said previous, quick clot doesn't work by itself. You need something behind it namely gauze, a sock or manual pressure keep the bandage over the source of the bleeding and direct pressure applied. There are some whiz bang techniques for bandaging that area and some cool gadgets out there to aid in stopping junctional/inguinal bleeds but forceful direct pressure and some sort of hemotstatic is the gold standard for bleeds like that. Yes, there would still be active bleeding if proper technique wasn't used in the application of any sort of "stop gap." At that point CG needed timely surgical intervention. www.sammedical.com/products/the-sam-junctional-tourniquet there is an example of a fairly new junctional device. I had it tested on me and it stopped the pulses in both my feet within 10 seconds of application.
Combat Gauze is amazing. I've used it on a femoral bleed and it shut down in seconds. Pop a roll of kerlex on top and ace wrap the shit out of it. Good to go. You gotta get the Z-folded ones in the vacuum sealed packaging though, the rolled gauze is a major pain in the ass to get in there.
I'm a medic in the Army and I can speak from experience that an inguinal bleed like that is one of the hardest bleeds to manage. You can't put a tourniquet up that high. I always carry some rolled gauze and an ace wrap with me whenever I ride. Props to those guys for quick thinking. Using your knee is spot on the right thing to do. Ball up a sock and place directly over the wound and apply direct pressure as hard as you can. Glad Cedric is ok, all things considered.
He must be a cat inside a cat, if he didn't have experience with keeping cool during fk ups, he might not make it. Holy damn, clear mind is a good thing to have... it just sends shivers down my spine to think what would happen if they did not have a helicopter. That was a freaking good save, unfortunate as hell but a lot of things seem to have fallen into the place
All the best CG, you are a bloody legend!
December 1999 my good friend and i where up riding Triple Crown on Burke Mtn , i was ahead and he was behind me as we where exiting the trail he went down on a simple corner . as i waited for a few minutes wondering where he was i hiked back into the bush, he came limping out in great pain and discomfort .
in his crash he took the end of the handle bar to the top inside of his right quad , it was swelling up rapidly , i grabbed a big cold frozen rock and applied as much pressure as i could till he felt he was able to continue . he rode too the bottom of the mountain and we where off too the ER in a hurry .
fast forward he was transferred from our local ER to a bigger ER where they preformed a angioplasty procedure to repair the ruptured artery in his leg . no only did the bar end rupture the artery it also took a big bone chip out of his femur which was missed during the procedure as the 2nd ER did not get the Xrays from the 1st ER .so a couple days after the angio procedure they had him up and moving and the bone chip punctured the artery again requiring emergency surgery to remove the chip and repair the once again damaged artery .
the doctors had told him that the endcap on the handlebars was the difference between him living and dying had it been a open handlebar the impact would have taken a core sample from his quad and he would have bleed too death before exiting the trail .
i have to give KUDOS too those who where riding with CG IMO they are the difference in him being still with us today .
When I watched this first I was on mobile and the quality wasn't all that good. But after watching it on the bigger screen and seeing the blood gushing from his leg is one of the most disturbing thing's I ever saw. Get soon well Cedric.
This was way scarier than I expected. Did anyone else at first think they were just showing footage of his first life threatening crash?
This really hit home for me when I realized how many times I've done really risky things on the bike by myself out in the middle of nowhere. CG you're an amazing individual, I wish it didn't take such a horrific injury to remind us that riding "on the edge" is fun, and can give you a reason to get up in the morning, but it's not a game. I know once the snow melts and I can get back out there, I may not ride timidly or cautiously, but ill definitely be more safety conscious. It's a tough balancing act.
unbelievable calmness by credic and his friends to handle a situation like that. i dont think it could have been done any better. Then end where they were all cheering and high fiveing, i was gripped.
That was amazing on the spot reaction, huge respect for Cedric keeping calm, most people would have absolutely lost it. And to his friends who were there, they saved his life. Enough said. Goes to show how fast things can get bad. It was honestly an eye opener for me, defiantly throwing some first aid supplies in my bag, haha I don't think tape and an expanding towel could pass as medical supplies.
I went over my bars once at super low speed and landed on the bar end with my groin area. The bar never ripped my pants but the sheer force ripped a huge gash in my flesh missing the artery by milimeters. I was rushed to the trauma room in an ambulance where they stapled me shut. Its amazing how you can get hurt so bad from a crash so small or walk away after being pounded into the rocks in a badass crash. Keep riding. Wishing CG a fast recovery.
Did the same thing, over the bars on a stupid root, pushed the break leaver into my leg. Hurt like a bitch, never thought about the artery being there. I guess I was pretty lucky, it will certainly make you think about solo rides...
Amazing how quickly it escalated to keep that level of calmness is worthy of major respect the majority of people would have panicked. Luckily he knew instantly what had happened and knew what to do due to his previous crash at Val di sole without that knowledge I'm pretty sure he would not be here today. This hopefully will encourage people to learn some first aid so that if this happens to them or a friend they can keep that person alive. Also stands to shows that's riding with someone is incredibly important his friends are the reason he survived he couldn't of applied sufficient pressure to the wound by himself. Get well Cedric this was a nasty crash I need and I hope that u can start shredding the trails again some time soon and also respect to his friends as they saved his life. Have a speedy recovery dude.
I read every comment, but nobody mentioned that Cedric calmly directing his friend to push one knee then the other into his broken pelvis is the ONLY thing that saved Cedric. Clear minds, common sense, and a clear direction for what needed done saved his life.
The grim reality is if it can happen to Cedric it can happen to you! Will you know what to do as your friend bleeds out? The grim answer is unless you studied a little bit of first aid...you wont have a clue. The next few minutes are all up to you and the next 60 minutes decide if your buddy is going to live or die.
What about a neck injury where your buddy can't breath..what do you do? What if he is impaled on a stick? What about a separated shoulder? Should you re set it? These is simple first aid and common problems in mountain biking with some very wrong answers.
This stuff is too simple not to have a basic field understanding...It can be done online and you can learn the basics in an afternoon or less. Look after it just like you would part of your bike!
Scary shit! To think a guy who has been around for so long competing at such a high level, Redbull rampage champ, could have easily died in, what looked like an every day crash for an average rider. CG is rad, and it was a freak accident that could happen to anybody. Good thing MTB riders are such awesome people it's easy to make friends, don't ride alone!
Ohhh f*ck man, Heal up cedric, you are a champion and a hell of a inspiration to many and it sucks to see you messed up like that. I am thankfull that youre friends and you had good knowledge in first aid and Give you major props to the way you kept your composure.
heal quick and proper, my thoughts and healing vibes are sent your way.
That was terrible, CG owes his friend a debt he will likely never be able to repay. The pressure on his friend must've been enormous. Glad to see the stars were aligned for CG he made it.
Cg... wow... I don't know what to say. I hope your next few years are more boring.. this almost dying thing is hard on me! And I am going to upgrade my first aid again. That was such a mellow looking crash, and if it were not for staying calm and some quick thinking it would have been tragic... wow.
This one hits really close to me. I had a similar situation almost exactly 4 years ago (Dec 26th, 2009) where my seat broke after I landed on it. It impaled me where my leg meets my lower abdomen/groin (I have an album on PB with pictures). Luckily I hit a major femoral vein and not the artery - or I would have most likely died.
Cedric, your riding and personality are a big reason I got into the sport.. Seeing this, and the level of zen you maintained throughout is even more of an inspiration. Heal well and ride again, friend.
Cedric. You are a BEAST, a true inspiration to everyone. Good job from everyone there. Unbelivable how fast it can happen. Rupturing the arteries in your leg is very very deadly.
With an injury like that, there's something that rolls through your brain akin to 'well, I guess it's time', and everything goes quiet... A combination of stress hormones, adrenaline and a subconscious understanding that shit just went south, reeeeeeal quick. I'm guessing ol' CG has felt that more times than most, and heading for that quiet zone is what saved his life. Lucky few survive those sorts of accidents. Glad he's one of them!
I had a bullet take out my sub femoral 11 years ago and almost bled out. Docs said they were very concerned about blood clots but my swelling was gone within 5 days, which dumfounded them. When they were told I mountain bike, it was like a light went on in their heads. I'm sure he is going to be fine but repairing an artery sometimes diminishes blood flow due to scar tissue. Give him some time and CG will be back I'm sure. He's got the right mental ammunition to defeat it.
Humbling shit, right there. If it can happen to an elite-level guy on a seemingly innocent section of trail, it's not beyond any of our abilities (or lack thereof) to be in this same exact situation. Glad he managed to pull thru and obviously his work on this planet is not done yet. Phew!!!
The US Military developed a program called tactical combat casualty care in which it identified bleeding out as the number one addressable cause of death for soldiers. Why am I bringing it up? Because between the pages of decompressing tension pneumothorax or care under fire are ways to address bleeding. Great info on tourniquets, compression and hemostatic agents... Could save your life one day.
The video doesn't show much but the injury looks high leaving a tourniquet out and for us common folk without what is essentially a large mechanical clamp carrier by some medics, stuffing that wound and compression is probably the way to go. And it needs to be more pressure than cedric can apply himself, like the buddies knee. Rip off a jersey stuff it in the wound and apply enough pressure that you think your going to break him.
Somewhere in the free tccc files is a video of hemostatic bandaging being stuffed into a bleed, gross but great for learning.
That really scared me. A bit too real perhaps. I am so glad you are ok Cedric. I have been a big fan for a long time. I wish you a wonderful life and career going forward. Thanks for staying strong and alive. We all need you on this earth.
some clever people here ^^ learnt a lot from the video and the comments, CG is a bull, such poor luck, reading some pros above he will be fixed quicker than bone problems,
think i would of flat panicked with the blood firing allover like that
cedric is like archer. nothing will ever beat him.. or is it time to start golfing. omg cedric as pga tour champ. watch out tiger..................................... hahaha wtf was i thinking. take care get better fella
Quick clot is not advised, the uk only use it on ops, however it massively damages tissue as it melts the area to stem the bleeding, you lose just as much through the surgical teams trying to clean it out to repair the original damage! If you have a massive bleed, stuff it with latex, that's the new and better SOP! Quick clot also has chemicals that can effect your blood. I have used it in afghan but only on GSWs, wouldn't use it for much else! Really is only used if you can't or know you won't be seeing a medical team within the golden hour! A latex band cut into strips of 45mm by 100mm and stuff into wound! That does work and it can be cleaned without further damage!!
What the hell? Tissue damage? Where are you getting your facts from? Maybe with the old powder form, but the impregnated gauze is a new story entirely. The old form was non-hydrated Zeolite that had issues with exothermic reactions, IE it produced heat. The new formula for Zeolite is hydrated and no longer produces heat. What that boils down to is no tissue damage and no allergic reactions to send people into shock. Latex allergies, Particularly in a military medicine setting, have a tendency to develop in extensive use. Cleaning quick clot out of a wound in a surgical setting is no longer the nightmare it used to be, as it is impregnated into strips of gauze. There is a reason every deploying soldier has at least one roll of quick clot on their kit at all times. Trust me, military medicine changes by the month, as I'm sure you know from your experience in Afghanistan. The latest and greatest first responder trauma treatment for un-tuorniquet-able major hemorrhage IS combat gauze. Latex strips aren't even on the map.
Thanks to the combat medics who backed me on Quick Clot. Yea, I know it works too. I'm a SWAT medic and have trained with it. I have seen it stop wounds like this several times. We use Combat Gauze and Celox-A and I've seen it do some amazing things. Again thanks for your comments and especially for your service.
Don't know if PB will care if I promote this but I use ProFirstAid.com for all of the certifications I need as a coach and it is a pretty good online resource and once you complete your training and pass the test you receive refresher videos all the time that are good. It will not make you an expert but it helps verse you in basics as a first responder.
Just revisiting this thread, some two months later....and in my googling of quickclot, I came across this thread (on an off-road forum) that actually has a series o medical vids.....
DAMN! I ride with only a helmet and knee pads... not only do us riders not expect an injury like this, but there is no real way to protect yourself from it either. I'm about to invent some Kevlar boxers!
Will have this on my mind every time I pop out to our local spot on my own for a few runs. Scary shit. Thank god there were some cool headed people about! We all should be mindful.
wow, that was one of the hardest to watch movies i´ve seen so far... get well soon cedric... and props to his friends who rode with him... i would have cried like a baby in their place... probably.
Oh wow... Cedric is one smart, lucky guy!! At first I though he ruptured his genitals, but then I realized it was coming from his thigh... That has GOT to hurt. Heal up quick, man!
Oh my god.. Imagine this would happen to you - alone.. CG is one tough guy for sure, he can be happy to have friends like this! I don't know if I stayed that calm..
Get well soon CG....A MONSTER OF A HUMAN BEING....TOUGH AS OLD BOOTS.
We will see you riding again im sure.massive respect to all the paramedics and his friends that helped you guys saved his life that day.well done
this is the scariest thing I have seen. we have all had a fall like that and just got up and rode away, i did today all I got was some small scratches on my arm. It really makes you think.
why are they they walking so slow ??? or did they run already some time before ? i mean it seems that they are not in a hurry. don´t want to say anything bad about the guys , just want to know the reason ?
Everyone reading this needs to go put 2 clean pairs of "latex" or medic gloves into a ziploc bag and shove that ziploc into their riding bag. Do it NOW. Protect your buddies, but protect yourself first.
Celox-A and pressure, researchers cut the femoral blood vessels in the groins of 80 pigs to test, there are videos online and the test results seem to say pressure and Celox A www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21496135
Thats mad, hes is so lucky and fair play to the other guys for keeping a cool head. I have to agree with whats been said... a medic Monday or some sort of first aid 101 would be a great idea.
This video probably gonna save life's cause people gonna get some first aid practice. That was scary "I'm going to die ",yes you will but not yet you have time for it
Wish you the best CG! what a fighter. Thanks God for the keep him alive and the learning, opening our eyes about this kind of situations. First aid training must be first than more carbon.
CG get well soon. His buddy should get an award for what he did, amazing, we were only saying the other day how fortunate it is that you don't see worse injuries or death in MTB and then this gets posted.
That scared the shit out of me just from watching the video. I've never seen an injury like that before and i've seen quite a few nasty industrial accidents. Fantastic team work saving CG's life though.
You can buy a blood clotting agent from REI for this type of injury. Just learn how to apply it. You Tube has some training videos. Otherwise lots of direct pressure, good job from his buddies.
Blood clotting agents won't be very effective on a severed artery. Good product, but wrong application. His friends did exactly the right thing. The proof, is that he's alive today.
Jerry, I'm a combat medic and I've personally seen a femoral artery shooting blood shut down in seconds using quick clot combat gauze. Its magical. Seriously. look it up. Pressure shuts off the flow all right, but its still a gaping hole. Quick clot plugs that hole with artificial coagulants and combined, there is no better way to stop major hemorrhage without going for a tourniquet.
Holy hell CG! Perhaps it's time to consider retiring from MTB racing and just manage the team eh? Two major dodged-a-bullet crashes in the last couple of years that both almost claim your life and no-one would blame you for never hitting the bike again (If I was in your position I'd probably seriously consider that myself). It'd be a huge loss to the sport but I'd rather have you still alive and kicking. No matter what I'm just glad you're still alive, Get well soon!!
thats some scary shit right there
also im no doctor but if that broke from the inside i huess he is lucky it punctured to the outside or they wouldnt have known what was going on and he would bleed out internally
Crazy how such a minor looking crash could produce such a terrible injury. Huge props to CGs buddies who stayed calm and handled the situation like pros.
Did this happen recently? His friend said he was going to race the WC this year Have they kept it quiet until now Get well soon Cedric you super awesome dude! Healing vibes!
yeah i know he's quit dh and now does enduro but i just wondered if there was a clue there as to when this happened such a cool guy! watched again and makes more sense now though get well soon!
According to the site 26in.fr his groin was perforated by the handle bar and/or brake lever when the front wheel turned 90 degrees and stoped, after sliding on something.t
Sorry, but i still dont get what happend.. Theres so much blood, but he just slipped away sideways.. Did he hit a rock or something? CG is one tough guy... Holy crap...
I did a load of research on stopping bleeding and then thought about stopping the cutting, I am ordering these after the xmas break blastboxers.com/index.html
that guy is a flippin ANIMAL! hey i just broke my hip, cut my femoral, im just gonna stick my hand in it and if your standing there put you knee on it!
Damn mon frere! I think you've had more than your share of freak accidents. That looked so scary! Best wishes healing and to your friend for keeping it together for ya.
This is what I want to know. It didn't look like such a tough crash so what could have caused a puncture of first his skin and then an artery! Was he stabbed by something on the bike?
Thank you!
I didn't watch the whole video as it was edited in a funky way that made me dizzy!
Wow if he broke his pelvis I feel sorry for the fellow!
I hope he heals up safe and sound for the next season!
RideOn!
Well, after watching the video in a sober state I realized he was losing tons of blood.
He was having the other guy put all his weight on his hip to stop the unconfined blood from dribbling away.
So, if his pelvis was broken as well he might not have been able to endure the weight of another guy.
I have to say they kept him under control very and wrapped the situation up very nicely.
I have a lil bit of emt training, Im a wildland firefighter so im exposed to it a bit....why weren't those emts running? I mean any artery is serious lol
That's all one can do at that point. No need to freak out, because that just gets the heart-rate thru the roof and we'd still be mourning his loss otherwise. I'm not sure how many of us could be so calm after seeing 1/2 our blood all over the ground. :S
he broke his pelvis and the broken bone severed the femoral artery and broke the skin... if it hadn't broken the skin guarantee he would have died!! he wouldn't have known what was going on and just bled to death!!
No. The pelvis break was a while back - Val Di Sole maybe? and it was on the other side. This was a laceration to his leg. Had his pelvis been broke, it would have been obvious when friends applied pressure in to his groin with their knees...
As far as what happened to CG, if you're alone out there you have about zero chance of surviving that. Without help, you can't really put enough pressure on your own femoral artery to stop yourself from bleeding out, which will happen in a matter of minutes. Like 2.
This ain't like tech Tuesday. They're hands on courses for a reason. People should take initiative and do the classes on their own.
I highly recommend Wilderness First Responder by any accredited institution (here's a few): but CC college EMT is way cheaper.

Even if you don't use immediately, you'll never regret it!
peanuts are not nuts! they are related to peas and beans. "legumes"
Cedric is one bad mofo. i like how he stayed so calm pretty sure that saved his life.
I don't know how he managed to be so relaxed with that.
So any confirmation how he torn the artery?
An in the field external femoral artery rupture survival rate is around 25%
Got to love when people do all the right things in a bad situation.
Kinda scary indeed how little is needed to get wrecked.
I don't know why i keep struggling with this "is it really worth it" - attitude...
But on the other hand I wouldn't get lucky without riding my bike...

I'm in the bleeding/ injured business and that video made me pale and sweaty. Get well, CG!
This also gives some of us out there a good example of why riding with a buddy or buddies, is kind of a good thing. Especially if your doing some DH riding.

I would not be so sure about its fantastic effect - simple pressing is the most important thing, as they did, fortunatelly.
www.sammedical.com/products/the-sam-junctional-tourniquet there is an example of a fairly new junctional device. I had it tested on me and it stopped the pulses in both my feet within 10 seconds of application.
So glad he is ok and his mates reacted so quickly!! Makes me think i REALLY need a basic med kit + some first aid training.
Getting on that in the new year after seeing this.
Wish you a speedy recovery CG
Look after it just like you would part of your bike!
heal quick and proper, my thoughts and healing vibes are sent your way.
It's always the stupid crashes. There are a lot worse guys/riders it could happen to too.
That was really scary, big respect to him and his buddy's.
Going to be updating my first aid kit, getting some bar plugs and learning some first aid
That was a real eye opener, and a f*cking scare
Heal up - we all await your recovery.
Cedric, your riding and personality are a big reason I got into the sport.. Seeing this, and the level of zen you maintained throughout is even more of an inspiration. Heal well and ride again, friend.
Somewhere in the free tccc files is a video of hemostatic bandaging being stuffed into a bleed, gross but great for learning.
think i would of flat panicked with the blood firing allover like that
maybe it's just the way this video was put together...not saying how he should be doing what he does, he just seems to be taking it real casual.

His friend said he was going to race the WC this year
Have they kept it quiet until now
Get well soon Cedric you super awesome dude!
Healing vibes!
such a cool guy!
watched again and makes more sense now though
get well soon!
What happened?
The editing was really hard to understand.
Why is his he so hurt on one little crash?
As others have posted on here, it seems he was essentially stabbed by either the bar end or brake lever.
Or is there even more up to date news?
www.deitycomponentsstore.com/deity-lifesaver-end-caps1.html
+vibes for his recovery! it's erie hearing someone speak about dying.
