Pinkbike would like to congratulate Matty Miles and Karl Heldt from Silvia on their win, and also Stu Thompson for making it into the final round.

VOY Winners

bigquotesWe are so stoked we won the Pinkbike video of the year contest, so awesome to see a huge audience that enjoys what we love to do, thanks to everyone that voted for us. So stoked on the prizes, can't believe how much companies put up for the contest! The video was one of our best shoots of the year. Working together always seems to flow nicely because of Matt's understanding of camera placement so well, which makes it easy to capture the angles that enhance his riding. We always try to keep our shoots fun and try to capture that feeling through the video.

Silvia just won themselves a Complete 2012 Carbon Trek Session 9.9 decked out in Shimano Saint components, a year's supply of CLIF Bar food and drink and an all-expense paid trip to Sea Otter (courtesy of CLIF Bar) to have their video played before the premiere of Strength in Numbers, as well as winning all of the other prizes from the previous rounds.

Stu Thomson, as the runner-up, won himself a Whistler Bike Park and Summer Gravity Camps prize pack including:
- 2012 Summer Gravity Camp for 1 including accommodation.
- Additional 5 Nights stay at the close and convenient Crystal Lodge & Suites located in the heart of Whistler Village and steps away from the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.
- A Whistler Mountain Bike Park 2012 Season Pass.
- 5 Day lift tickets for friends.
- 2 Peak Ride tickets.

Round of 32 - All 32 receive either an Atherton or Vanderham PRO handle bar ($85) w/ grips ($29)
Round of 16 - All 16 receive a Contour Roam Helmet Camera and Flex Strap Mount (MSRP: $199 Camera, $29 Mount)
Round of 8 - All 8 receive a Complete M810 Shimano Saint Group (MSRP $1700 each)
Round of 4 - All 4 receive an Evoc Prize pack - Custom SIN Backpack, Camera Bag and Bike Travel Bag (MSRP $1100 per prize)
Runner Up - 2nd place receives a Summer Gravity Camps + Whistler Bike Park Prize pack ($4000)

Huge thanks to our sponsors for making this contest as awesome as it is

Is Matt Miles sponsored by any major bike brand? If so, wouldn't that mean he wouldn't even be able to ride the Session?

Glad he won, because I dont know what Danny Macaskill would do with a session!
  • 16 2
danny wouldnt have gotten the bike. stu thompson would have.
  • 28 2
Simple solution. Give Matty the frame, Karl gets the fork, then divide up the rest of the bits. Or sell the bike on Fleabay and buy a S-ton of beer!!!!!!!
  • 7 2
I'm pretty sure Matty is sponsored by Specialized, also Karl did all the filming and editing. Although Matty would slay on that bike Karl deserves it.
  • 9 1
 matt belongs on the demo
  • 4 5
sounds like danny is gonna be at SGC this summer

Danny wouldn't ride downhill if he won anyways....
  • 3 0
btw Danny does downhill i met him and one of his friends who co filmed the industrial edit
  • 2 0
@yeahbro matt and karl are both sponsored by specialized, and they got sponsored by them during the winter or right before the winter
  • 2 0
This is correct. They both ride for specialized, and will be riding black demos if I remember correctly.
  • 1 0
Oh, that makes sense. Double stoked for them now!
  • 1 1
They ride Demo's, they are not sponsored by Specialized.
  • 1 0
@Hoolydooly like we said they just got sponsored by them
  • 2 1
Check the bicycle cafe page on fb and it'll confirm this. Post was made Mar.7

Dude(s) who are saying that Danny Mac shouldn't have got the session even if industrial revolutions had won because he doesn't ride DH: 1. Danny wouldn't have got it, Stu Thompson would have got it, being the film-maker. 2. Danny does ride downhill, he does all kinds of biking, shreds doing all of them!

Oh my god. Pinkbike announced something and didn't give it away on the main page. Now if they could only do World Cup results like this.
  • 2 10
flag ptrsmmrs (Apr 11, 2012 at 15:19) (Below Threshold)
Why? World Cup results are public knowledge once the even has happened, the only reason that this wasn't given away on the homepage was because the competition was being run by Pinkbike.
  • 12 0
Sorry but for myself and I'm sure a bunch of other people, we're busy during the race and afterward and we only use pinkbike to get the results... and we don't like to be told the ending of a story before we see the beginning. That's shocking isn't it? Wink

Yeah same here but my theory on it is that the majority of kids that voted for the Silvia video did so just because they didn't want Danny's video to win for one or more of the following reasons 1. Danny wasn't wearing a full face and wasn't riding a dual crown 2. They judged the people based on production values and sponsors and decided that Danny and whoever made the video, have enough success 3. They simply had no clue about what they were watching Whichever the reason is you can be sure they didn't vote based on whose riding was more impressive... sad but that's what a public voting does.
  • 31 8
 U MAD BRO?
  • 15 3
 @ scott
its much more easier to get nice shots with a nice location and even with mega skill in it.
Silvia hadnt the most epic possibilities to get that cool shots with a composition that nice. But they surely made the best out of it.
Only because there are 2 different riding styles u cant make statements with that much bullshit in it.
It's like saying americans are better than every other country. (just an example)
I voted for Silvia because i really want to ride after watching it. couldnt say the same thing of danny in stu's vid...perhaps i didnt even consider to get that good xD
  • 10 16
flag scott-townes (Apr 11, 2012 at 17:05) (Below Threshold)
Just to let you know, those aren't my reasons but the absurd reasons that I think the majority of kids used to vote and I bet you can find a few posts of kids in here claiming to use at least one of those, haha. But I beg to differ with you on the point that Silvia didn't have as good of a location to shoot as Danny's because a mountain bike park seems like a damned good location to film biking than an old shipyard. But hey if you guys want to vote for a video because it simply makes you want to ride then go for it, haha.
  • 5 1
jeah that about the locations... if u get buildings old trains and even sick metal cables its easyier to film and set up a shot (like danny really did).
In Bikeparks there are other people that ride, the set up of a line is limited (there were still some really sick line choices in it) and bears could attack u in any time!
I'm talking 100% about the filming. I think u see it from the point of the rider. Then I agree with you.
ride on
  • 7 2
Danny is rad... But I think I voted against him for a couple of reasons:
1. I've been watching the video all year and now I don't even need to see it I just listen to the song. I hadn't even seen the Silvia video until this comp and I think it deserves more exposure.
2. Yes Danny is amazing, but it’s a different discipline, and so far out of my range. The other chap is just a standard pinner having fun and it makes me smile :-)
Will I still be watching it next year? Or even next week? Probably not... Will I be watching Danny? YES, but right now I enjoy Sylvia’s video more.
  • 4 1
Yeah and it doesn't really matter to me, I just have different preferences of how to pick my vote for videos.
  • 2 0
I'm gonna call bullshit on reason #3, but reasons 1 and 2 have at least some validity to them, and don't seem all that absurd to me at all. The video of the year really should represent and resonate with the majority of the viewers on pinkbike, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure most of us can more easily identify with Matt Miles and classic bike park shredding than Danny Macaskill and ridiculous street trials. Also Industrial Revolutions has over 5 million views on youtube, and the average person is much more likely to have seen Danny Makaskill's videos. The Video of the Year should be, and is, a new video that we can show to a non mountain biker and wow them with what it is we do, or at least what we like to think we do.
  • 6 0
I voted for Silvia because I preferred it. It made me want to ride more. Danny Mac is amazing, no doubt- but it didn't make me want to ride- it made me want to give up! I love the fact that VOY was won by a vid that didn't have any backflips or tailwhips. Good old fashioned shredding shined through. Sick.
  • 21 4
I'm pleased, Silvia won, there vids always make you want to get out and shred, well done guys!
  • 18 5
I picked this vid from the beginning! Every time I was done watching it, I had to go grab my bike and go shred some DH, It got me that pumped. Great vid guys, and congrats on all the prizes, you deserve them! Hope pinkbike does this contest every year, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I really enjoyed it.
  • 24 15
I do not get it. All he did was ride a flowy trail and do moto whips, that is it. There was no real tricks, gaps, scenery or cool structures. Plus the video quality was not that great either. I'm truly surprised this made it past the second round. Macaskill's video was great quality, had tricks, gaps, scenery and cool structures. I'm not trying to disrespect Matty Miles and Karl Heldt but this is not video of the year quality.

i think silva won becouse the final was sucks. Macaskills video is high budget commercial and ppl didn't vote for it.
  • 5 3
In what way is it a high budget commercial?
  • 10 3
I think you might find that Stu & Danny were the only 2 people there and that the budget for the vid was tiny, the reason you think it looks high budget is down to the skill and imagination of the film maker and the incredible skills of the rider - its a disused rail yard in the West of Scotland and what they came up with is truly incredible and hugely inspiring. A good film maker can make anybody look great, it takes true talent to make something incredible
  • 7 1
"All he did was ride a flowy trail and do moto whips, that is it".... That's why I love it! This vid definitely makes me want to ride my bike on a flowy trail, roost some corners, do some whips and have fun. There were a bunch of vids in the contest with higher production, gnar or technical moves but this vid really captured the fun in riding bikes. Its got some soul!
  • 7 1
i dont get how people can hate on scrubs and whips there the coolest looking things to do on a bike . the tricks people do these dont compare to classic whips and scrubs it makes me sick people would hate on whips and scrubs

  • 16 11
the matt miles edit was insane. for sure the winner hands down
  • 10 13
the videography in the Silvia vid is good, but the riding is mediocre, Stu Thomson's film work is classy and beautifully understated and when married with Danny's incredible skills a match made in biking heaven, IMHO
  • 7 5
Good thing the pinkbike kids know what they are doing then!
  • 7 6
right, so to make an award winning vid, the key is to have everything slo-mo? I jest I jest, vid was cool but it was nearly all in slow motion, I much prefer normal speed so you actually get an idea of the speed the rider is going. It's like Life cycle all again, cool shots but really boring as it was all too slow and seemed to be more about the "wikid cool camera angles and technology" rather than the actual riding. DH vids were at their peak with the Earthed series, since then it's all gone down hill (excuse the pun).

Either way, I much preffered the vid of Danny, I didn't actually skip through that unlike most vids I see these days.
  • 5 3
@Bikeordeath, Karl could even make your riding look good, lol, this is mediocre, ie normal, average, lacking imagination, please watch and learn www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z19zFlPah-o, and www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj6ho1-G6tw
  • 6 2
Lol... @biggerhit 02 I don't know what planet you're on, you're telling me the scrub at 2:11 is "mediocre?" Only Matt Miles has style like that. Oh well, haters gonna hate.
  • 4 5
won't get my vote because of an awesome scrub... pic any second of Danny's vid and its awesome... Oozing style...
  • 3 6
@bikeordeath, not hating on you or the Silvia vid, just trying to get you to open your eyes, look at at the world around you and see all the possibilities, shit I can scrub my road bike, lol
  • 6 1
biggerhit... you think matty miles riding is mediocre?! dude... no
  • 2 3
If you want to pick a dh vid with more flow and imagination, Matt Beer's edit was class www.pinkbike.com/video/237424
  • 4 0
i love that edit but matt miles is an amazing talent on a bike and karl behind the lens is killer. matt beers edit was really basic filming to tell you the truth...
  • 4 0
it's not even the only great edit they did. And in my opinion the ydo have the most unique and innovative camerawork in combination with tasteful music like austra or phantogram. Danny McAskill is nice trial-riding but it has nothing to do with how I and probably many other see our sport.
  • 2 0
@biggerhit02 you have obviously never been to sun peaks because matt miles rode those trails faster then anybody i've seen and certainly with the most style. f*ck this is a streach but sam hill even filmed a bit of his part for f1rst on those babys and didnt look nearly as awesome or fast.
  • 1 2
 thanks boys. totally agree
  • 1 2
also look at the number of faves on the two videos... clearly matty's has gotten a lot more... kind of speaks for itself
  • 2 1
Its funny , a great video wins and everyone starts complaining, and saying it was just a promo, that video is great, the danny mcaskill was shot to be a commercial try to stop complaining about it honestly
  • 2 0
@biggerhit02 I've seen both of those videos and they are insane videos, so its not that my eyes are closed to other styles. I have nothing against Danny I think he is an incredible talented rider, but personally I thought that Matt Miles was better filmed and really got me stoked to ride.
  • 2 0
oh and I would love to see you scrub like that on your road bikes, I bet a lot of others would also.
  • 3 1
The riding was mediocre biggerhit? I just.... I don't even know what to say. You can't even remotely be serious. Matt was absolutely shredding that mountain.
  • 13 4
Just remembered that the winner was being announced today so i run upstairs, jumped on PB, and my day was made when i saw Silvia won it! Great work guys!
  • 15 5
I swear this is some of the best shredding I have ever laid my eyes on.
  • 1 0
Indeed some of the best! My only 2 criticisms are that I would like to see the end of the shot at 0:57 (he’s going somewhere), and I feel like he should be gapping the inside at 1:07?...
  • 1 0
@ 57 I feel like they showed enough. And at 1:07 I think that hes trying to get in the most ballanced riding position and gapping that doesnt seem like his riding style he seems to keep his speed very well through tight corners. Much better then anyone I know can.
  • 8 1
this clip was watched more and more time on all our transfer this summer, inspired us a lot! so it must ben the VOY congrats Silvia well done!
  • 5 0
I think it really came down to who could really connect with the viewers. Being able to connect is a skill that cant necessarily be defined by production methods, technical skills, etc. Its a little more abstract but its definitely a skill that the Silvia Films utilize EVERY TIME. They get me so stoked on biking. Good Job to everyone. I loved being a couch critic!

  • 7 2
For shear creative videography, I’d agree with that. (Danny Mc for bike riding skillz).
  • 19 14

A few things seem a little off about this to me and or may have been a conflict of interest. 1. Anthill is a main sponsor of this contest and if you watch their teaser you can clearly see that at least Matt Miles if not Silvia as a whole is already working with them seeing as he is in the teaser. 2. A post earlier put up on pinkbike states that one of the original judges in the contest is the marketing manager for Lavan which is a sponsor of Silvia. 3. It seems a little odd that a video with previously only around 100,000 views would beat a video with well over 5,000,000 youtube views. Nothing like a conspiracy theory to get people talking. Either way both videos were great!
  • 1 0
You got your tin foil hat on nice and tight? And what exactly does youtube have to do with pinkbike? The users voted, it won. Suck it up and move on.
  • 3 4
Well I am not a fan of this at all! The only reason this video won is because pinkbike is full of DH riders, who don't understand that another bike sport could be better filmed compared to a DH video. The silvia video was extremely badly filmed, cropping the rider, bad quality footage, missing the rider. Danny's was one of the best pieces of bike related cinematography I have ever seen, and the skill in the riding was at a whole other level. I also feel the Silvia video did not make me want to go out and ride at all, whereas Industrial revolutions is my standard watch before every single ride, and I never tire of it! That's my two cents worth James
  • 2 0
I couldn't disagree more with a few points. I love to watch the industrial revolutions video a few times but it has never made me think it's time to go ride my bike. I find that style of riding clinical which is not what I want from the sport, it doesn't give me the urge to get out the door and have a session. Yes the quality of the camera wasn't as good in the Silvia edit but the angles worked, the movement was pretty clean, there wasn't too much time adjustment with the footage. I liked the way the rider was cropped in and out of the shots as the focus changed. It made it look more loose and faster than it probably was. If they were using a HD camera like that out of life cycles then fine but the lower quality of the camera doesn't detract from the buzz I get off it. When I see someone shredding the mountain with style and speed I can get the rush from the thoughts of my previous rides and remember where I have been, what I have ridden and that gives me a high from some of my fondest memories. It is much more personal when I watch DH styled videos as a whole due to my relationship with the sport and that is what a video that is crowned video of the year give you. I do not think the ultimate in edit, camera angels are the be all and end all of what the video is. As you say Danny's cinematography was exceptional and his riding was technical and well executed but that is not what videos are produced for in themselves. You don't watch a movie just for the camera control or edits, you watch it for the storey and the feeling it creates as a viewer as you build a relationship to it.
  • 1 1
That is fair enough, but Danny's video really does make me want to ride, and much more so than the other. It may be that I ride in a similar style to Danny when on my trials bike, but I guess it's just personal opinion at the end of the day!
  • 1 0

technically you are right, but are two really different type of riding different type of mtb IMHO, but for a great video for me isn't important how technic riding is but how stylish' and how much the clip make wanna ride after watching it Big Grin
  • 2 3
Granted, but for me Danny's vids always make me want to go and ride and to look at where I'm riding with fresh eyes, to seek new lines, try new things and to do it with flow and style, the world is my bike park.
  • 3 1
Danny's videos make me want to give up
  • 5 4
They make me open my eyes and look at everything around me as a potential riding spot, not limiting myself to a bike park, I may not have Danny's skill - to be honest at nearly 40 I'm never going to have Danny's skill - but I can open my eyes and see a world of new stuff to ride Smile

Congrats to the guys from Silvia, beautifully filmed and incredibly well edited, however I think the riding was mediocre and lacking imagination and that Stu & Dannny's video showed far greater skill both in the film making and in the incredible riding.

I have to agree with surgesunday. Maybe it's something to do with repost quality or upload raping but the quality does look quite under-par.
