An estimated 500 spectators will line the course to catch the excitement as nearly 300 competitors attempt to master the four minute + course.

The Western Open is one of the best pure Down-Hill races in the Western Canada. It boasts a combined $5000.00 cash purse for Elite Racers with an additional $10,000 in SWAG and other free promotional products for racers, fans and volunteers for 2012. This year's race will take place on Sunday, August 5th at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden BC…events will be running all weekend long. The weekend will kick off Friday night with open practice running till 5pm followed by Saturday racers only practice and an industry expo. The 2012 event will also see host Brett Tippie back as MC, and the return of the Shimano Kids Race hosted by Tara Llanes, for riders under the age of 12.

Kovarik Racing Race Skills CampTop World Cup racers and PMBI(Professional Mountain Bike Instructor)Level 2 instructors, Chris Kovarik and Claire Buchar of Kovarik Racing will be holding a two day Race Skills Clinic for intermediate to advanced racers in conjunction with the Western Open race. From a track walk and bike set-up to line choice and putting a race run together, riders will learn skills, tactics and approaches to tackle any race weekend. Begin developing your race weekend formula with two of the industry’s top racers and most humble, passionate people! Riders will leave the camp with some Mental Training literature suggestions and a basic DH Specific Training Program from Strand Training. Chris and Claire will both be racing the Western Open and trying to lay down a new course record in 2012.
Claire Buchar pinned and ready to show you how she does it!C4 Learn to Race ClinicC4 Rider Training will be offering a version of the “Learn to Race” program at select BC Cup events in 2012. These will be designed around the new to intermediate racers. We will be covering bike set-up, as well as how to create a personal race weekend script. Training will be designed around becoming an effective prepared racer. Basic skills will be reviewed, but the focus will be to have a smooth race on and off the track. This is where it starts Get tips, and spend time with the fastest junior team in Western Canada. Learn to Race programs will be held a day in advance and start with a day of C4 FUNdamentals. Racers will be supervised on the track on the first training day by C4 Head Coach Cory Leclerc. Expect the C4 Team to show you some of the best lines the BC Cup Series has to offer. By race day LTR athletes will have a plan. This plan includes nutrition tips, race morning script, as well as a pre-race warm-up. As a bonus LTR racers will receive a take home plan to help them show up better prepared for their next event. This plan may stick for life

During the Western Open on August 3rd and 4th, C4 will be running a Learn to Race DH clinic for teens seeking a solid start at racing.
“In partnership with the event, C4 Rider Training and the Western Open have join forces to offer an opportunity for youth to get introduced to downhill racing” states Stephen Exley, Race Director for the Western Open. Being fast, agile and confident on a bike are great skills to put to use when competing. The coaching team at C4 can teach the skills to make a teen’s first racing experience a success. C4 Rider Training is providing a full day clinic with fully certified quality coaches. The future racers will learn how to get ready physically and mentally, how to read and walk the course prior to a race, they will also work on their downhill riding skills & line choices. Space is limited so register early!
Shimano Kids RaceThe Western Open is for everyone with Tara Llanes and Elladee Brown from Shimano hosting a great kids event & fun race on Saturday afternoon at 1pm, so be sure to bring the kids along to the resort. Open to ages 2 through 12.

Ladies Skills Clinic Powered by SRAM… Lindsey Voreis from the SRAM All Ride tour will be hosting a ladies only skills clinic on Saturday August 4th. The clinic will focus on beginner to intermediate skill sets and have a strong focus on building overall trail confidence. Lindsey will be developing skills through a supportive, step-by-step process that helps riders move beyond their fears to truly enjoy the fun of mountain biking. If you’re looking to learn new skills, increase your confidence on the bike, or simply enjoy the sport like never before, Lindsey is the coach for you! Class size is limited to only ten ladies so register early as you won't want to miss out. Registration will be on Cycle Component Network and will include lunch, swag, clinic and good times.
