What People are Riding in the Silver Star Bike Park

Sep 12, 2012
by Tyler Maine
There is only one weekend left in the 2012 Summer Bike Season at Silver Star, but it has been a fantastic season. Silver Star would like to send a big thanks to all the riders who visited this summer. Plus there is still two more days this weekend to enjoy the park so make the most of it! (open September 15 & 16)

Despite the cold and wet start to summer Silver Star has had a great summer on all accounts. Getting back to our racing roots and hosting our first BC Cup in a while was a definite highlight. We had one of the biggest competitor fields of all the BC Cup races in 2012 and are already making plans for next year’s event. Friday night Extended Play was a great success and gave bikers more time to hit the park midweek. Trail Crew was busy all summer and added another new trail to the mix in the off camber DH track known as Gnar. They also redesigned some of the trail network tweaking sections of Super Star, Rock Star and Challenger which made for a lot of happy bikers! In addition to all this work the guys even found time to build an unbelievable slopestyle course for Silver Style. Building off of last year’s success the Freeride Festival was an amazing weekend of Camp of Champions airbag jamming, Pump Track Challenge, Chainless race, Norco Demos and of course the ever impressive Silver Style Jump Jam.

Silver Star has plans to keep adding to the bike park increasing the trail offerings in the future to keep Silver Star Bike Park as one of the best places to ride your bike. Cam and the Crew have already started cutting new trails to the top of the mountain so it can be ready for next summer. Shazam is getting a brand new entry that will flow right off the top of the hill from the chairlift so look for that summer 2013.

Silver Star would like to really thank all our dedicated riders and especially our seasons pass holders who support the bike park. It’s for all the riders that love coming here that we continue to keep growing the trail system, stay open longer, offer more Extended Play nights and keep evolving.

The Bike Park has one weekend left coming up, September 15 & 16 and we encourage as many riders as possible to come out and enjoy the park before we put it to bed for winter. The conditions will be amazing with the rain we’ve received early in the week and Trail Crew is out there all this week getting the place buff for you guys. We’ll see you out on the trails this Saturday and Sunday!

Enjoy the ride, and now for the stats you've all been waiting for:

I thought the number of riders surfing Pinkbike would have been higher..

Surfing and registered are not the same Sexley - these are regular users that utilize the site and are registered as members. The number of people that read that site is higher than those that are registered.

demos are the shit hands down
  • 21 2
Ummm, where's the TR's? Bas and Tom are both riding 450s... Sure there's some more up there too.

I wouldn't be surprised if TRs outnumber demos down here at winterpark.
  • 5 1
that specialized..... there are no words......

 Where are the GT's?
  • 4 3
I seriously think Pinkbike have a lot of information about Canada parks and some US .... and that sometimes make go to other websites to get info about "local" trails.

@jhowlett - The Demo is the new Sunday, I reckon? Wink

Kona fire mountain in a bike park? Props to you sir...
  • 8 0
And a trek fuel. A stump jumper...... As long as your having fun
  • 2 0
There are a few, really fun, easy trails at the Star that can be ridden on a XC bike so everyone can come out and enjoy the hill.
  • 2 0
Depending on what day you can't me shuttling my local bucket . I could of been on a evil hardtail , ns surge , letoy , cannondale prophet mx , specalized p3 kona bass .. Some times it's fun taking a smaller less dh friendly bike than my Jedi .
  • 3 0
I've ridden a Trek Fuel on the gnar. Head tube angle is a little steep, but besides that it's fine as long as you're not going huge. People seem to forget how little travel the freeride bikes of old used to have.
  • 2 0
I rode a Kona Fire Mountain at Silverstar.... in 1990. First 26" mtn bike I owned. Rock Star and Pipe Dream were nowhere to be found. I remember doing a lot of endos over that 71 degree front end. We basically bushwacked our way down ski runs.
  • 1 0
I ride the bike park on a trek fuel! Although the stump jumper... damn
  • 16 1
Interesting, but people shouldn't be judged on what they ride. Surely its about just riding & having fun?
I've seen people out ride others on what could be called far inferior kit. Not everyone can afford the latest super bike from the boutique
brands.
Just ride what you've got.
  • 21 0
True, but no one is being judged. It's just interesting.
  • 14 0
Props to the rider of the Kona FIre Mountain.

No Transition 250's or 450's on that list?
IMO the TR250 was the best mini dh bike for 2012.

I would have liked to have seen the number of riders with Neck Braces? I know that I wont ride without my Leatt, but I would like to know how many others ride with them too?
  • 5 0
roughly 30% ride with them at whsitler? I might get one when I start racing again but most riders dont race and cant find a way to justify something so ridiculously overpriced, yes its your life, but we shouldnt have to pay more then 200 for a leatt dbx comp 2 at least
  • 17 0
I think that a lot of riders would get a brace just like that if they were not so stupid expensive.
  • 19 5
people should spend less on their carbon d3 and fork out for a neck brace
  • 1 0
The EVS neckbrace is £130, so probably about $180-200. I reckon that's not excessively expensive. I'm out of the DH game now (too old and poor) but if I was still regularly riding and racing, I'd definately have one.
  • 1 0
i wish they had them when i was racing motocross...then id probably still have one right now
  • 6 0
If I could afford a neck brace, I would have one. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
  • 3 0
I got my leatt for $179 USD. Just got to find it on sale.
  • 3 0
see, for that price id get one but it was like..$400 for the alpinestars one that i wanted awhile back.
  • 1 0
they can be found for under 200 bucks, i can under stand some people might not have that lying around but if you can afford new tires, 100$ bike shorts, and 5$+ beers at the hill then you can find the money for a brace.

start making hootch run a cheap set of tires, and stop in to the thrift store and your there.
  • 4 0
Just go on pricepoint.com I got mine super cheap there
  • 2 0
$237 for a DBX comp II on Hucknroll right now. Size small only. Just bought one. Seems well worth the money for me, even at full price. They are not stupid expensive. You get what you pay for.
  • 3 1
@Ollie-J: How do you figure that. The lower the momentum created by having a helmet attached to one's head when one crashes the less force the neck is being forced to deal with. There is no substitute for the lightest (certified) helmet that one can afford as the first step in preventing head injuries.
  • 4 2
people buy the d3s for style and because there troy lee if your really a weight saver the go get a half lid an ride xc but comeon my friend almost broke his neck this year a brace stoped that and i also had a big scare like come on its cheap life insurance spend the money on it before u cant walk
  • 3 1
@amrskipro The weight of the helmet doesnt brake your neck the worst u might get from that is some strained muscles etc. the minimal weight difference between your D3 and my rampage is gonna make no difference in a crash. may be slightly more comfortable over a days riding and be the in helmet to have but its not gonna protect you anywhere near as much as having a neck brace.
  • 1 0
the d3 is overpriced as well but see you can buy 60$ full face helmets if you look around, neck braces are overpriced because they know people have no alternative and that is just a disgusting money grabbing tactic in my opinion, they should top out at maybe 300 and start at 100 or less not top out at 800 or whatever that carbon one is priced at theyre saying "here pay 300-400 for a device that might save your life but for riders without that wallet size your f*cked"
  • 1 0
true they are expensive but the development going into them costs money and personally that development is reasuring. And looking at the stats with what people are ridng there are a lot of riders on some very nice kit with very nice gear and not owning neckbraces their pockets are certainly deep enough. Im a uni student riding a 4 year old bike and it was high enough on my prioirity list to get a second hand gpx for 300nzd. With mountainbiking being the leading cause of neck injury in nz its certainly worth it.
  • 1 0
that is very true, they cant cost much to make though but there are more overpriced things out there anyway to rant about like ipods and oakley sunglasses... I just think and I know I'm not alone on this that there should be much cheaper options out there... hopefully 661 or ONE will start making them and drive prices down
  • 1 0
Agreed competition can never hurt. Evs braes are a little cheaper but from seeing ones mates own the leatt is considerably nicer.
  • 1 0
just looked up the evs braces, if im already paying 175 I'll just go for the leatt, those evs look a little bit crummy although im sure they work well
  • 1 0
Where are these stats for mtbing being the leading cause of neck injuries?
  • 1 0
Dunno where you can officially find them. but flatmates dad is a doctor and said that mtbing is now the leading cause of neck injuries even above rugby and i think cycling in general was the 2nd highest cause of head injuries behind assault.
  • 3 1
I think over time the prices of neckbraces will come down, but for the time being people that are supposedly on small budgets and running expensive helmets that will do the same job as a much cheaper one should consider having a less expensive helmet and a potentially life saving neckbrace.

We were there on the 19th - 20th of August and it was fantastic! The trails were mint and very well maintained. The riding was world class and man did we have a blast! We stayed and drank at The Bulldog, highly recommended! Big Mountain riding with micro village atmosphere. Beat the crowds at Whistler and check out Silverstar if you haven't already!
  • 9 0
a manitou splice? for real? that thing sucks even on asphalt.

I think it was probably on the fire mountain.

I think 'LinkedPRODUCTIONS' no one use's the minion dhr cos its a totaly differnt tyre to the dhf offering nowhere near the rolling resist//traction in turns /and contrrolable break away that the DHF has. I've tried to get on with a DHR but got rid of it in the end. DHF front and back or DHF+Highroller back.
  • 2 1
Why is the Demo, giant glory, devinci wilson counted all model variants, yet the santa cruz V10 is separated by carbon and aluminium.. if they bunched those together then the v10 would be 4% too...
  • 5 0
they had both the demo 8 and demo 7.. and what other kind of glory or wilson (don't think the carbons out yet) is there? the V10 carbon and aluminium are different bikes
  • 2 2
Is is the Demo 8 carbon and demo 8 aluminium
  • 2 2
as ryan says, there is a demo 8 alu and carbon.. it even says "all models" i know it's only a small thing,, but it does effect the way the results are shown..

10% have ridden 5 or less days in 2012?

You don't deserve to be in a bike park. Come sit in my office while I shred.
  • 2 0
im sure they probably ment how many times you rode a mountian..for guys like me living in ontario theres not a whole lot of option for downhill, thats why i sold my demo years ago and got my little 4X bike for park/street and DJ
  • 2 0
I hope so! That would probably be more likely with those figures - perhaps related to the different bike park visits?

"How many days have you ridden in a bike park in 2012?"

or

"How many days have you ridden at Silver Star in 2012?"

Just got back from Morzine in the French Alps... Pushing up and not many options for DH sucks!
  • 1 0
yeah your tellin me..with everything i dumped into my demo i had an almost $8000 rig..it was a shame to sell considoring i didnt get anywhere neer what i had into it. but hey, live and learn right? lol
  • 3 0
I had a knee surgery this spring. I didn't ride BMX at all, I haven't even pumped up the tires in my DH, and have about 10 short rides on my Ibis Mojo SL. (10k or less.) Sometimes life sucks and we can't get out there.

I found the maintenance frequency interesting. Maybe this is why people have so many problems with fork and dropper seat reliability.
  • 3 0
I believe that question relates to how many times the person had ridden Silver Star - people with 1-5 are probably tourists/visitors just there for a day or two, the 50+ guys are locals, presumably with no job!
  • 4 0
Would like to see the comparison between shimano & sram drivetrain..
  • 3 0
i may be the only rider on a Santa cruz bullit, but i guess that makes me unique.
  • 2 2
Nice try, but those statistics are EXTREMELY inaccurate. When you have hundreds of possible choices and your sample contains just 100 riders, then it is very far from being a good representative sample. It says almost nothing about what people ride in general, it just describes what were people riding that day and it may differ a lot. An example: if I came to the park that day when you made the statistics with some self-made custom bike, it would appear on the list with 1% despite being the only one of its kind in the world Smile
  • 5 1
So why ia Marzocchi dropping the 66. Its obviously every where still
  • 1 0
I would hope to see more Geax Neurons. I got one for $40 from a shop I just walked into. Tubeless bead, DHF knock off tread pattern, pretty sick tire. That would save some coin for Leatts...
  • 1 0
Never included the fact my Heckler and Jr. T's were from the mid 90's... just sayin, its kind of bad ass to be riding vintage (or stupid, one of the two).
I need a newer bike.
  • 1 0

 it's called the ' sam hill effect ' !
  • 4 0
Good bike, sensible price, not too heavy, great suspension system, name - how many reasons do you want?
  • 2 0
Ride one... It'll be obvious. Full on race bike but very very playful super lower center of gravity turns on a dime. Only other bikes I considered were Transition TR450, and Yeti 303.
  • 1 0
i think sam hill really doesn't have that much to do with it. what joey and paul above said does, and it jumps really well. in my experience owning a v10, trek sesh and a demo, i think the demo might jump the best. demo's are a very reliable and visible bike in every BC bike park.
  • 1 0
thanks guys, the only downhill bike I rode was a giant glory at the whistler bike park... but good to know when I invest in a downhill rig
  • 2 0
the giant glory is another excellent bike imho. affordable/reasonable, reliable, good sus design, better part out then my trek, good all around bike. but the devinci has to be considered as well. great DH bike with a lifetime warranty? what's not to like...
  • 3 2
I'm surprised there were no sundays on there, you still see loads of them in the UK
Also, giro remedy? Were 20% of the people blind? those things look terrible.
  • 3 1
Price and fit is much more important than looks to most riders. Personally, I think the Troy Lee D3 and Fox V3r offer a higher level of protection than less expensive helmets. My small Fox V3r helmet has a larger profile than a large helmet from other manufacturers, and is basically more protection than a Bike full face, but slightly less than a Moto helmet.
  • 2 1
Not the green ones with the skull and bones graphics. Those are dope. Big Grin
  • 3 3
I tried on a giro remedy when shopping for a new lid, found it incredibly uncomfortable! It just felt like they had taken an XC lid and turned it into a full face...
  • 3 1
the giro is horrible.. and i never see them over here..
  • 1 2
All my parts are atleast on the statpage...hmmm.

"Santa Cruz Heckler = 1%" lol.
"Fox 36 = 6%" Surprising 32 is higher.
"Fox RC4 = 27%" Glad I made the right choice in that regards.
