New Zealand BMXer Jed Mildon has created action-sports history today by landing the world’s first Triple Backflip at the Unit T3 Mindtricks BMX Jam in Taupo, New Zealand.
Mildon, 24, stomped the three rotations perfectly during the free-to-the-public BMX show in his home-town.
A representative of the Guinness Book Of World Records was on hand to witness and approve the ground-breaking trick that is sure to send shockwaves through the two-wheeled action-sports industry.
“This is the perfect result to three intensive months of practising and training for this moment,” said a thrilled Mildon.
“The impact and implications hasn’t sunken in yet, but I’m so pumped to have aimed for something once deemed impossible and made my dream a reality.”
“Even though I had the trick dialed perfectly into the foampit and onto an airbag set-up, I was still really nervous rolling in for my attempt, but once I was in the air it felt like time stood still and I could see each rotation perfectly.
“Landing with both wheels on the downramp was the most amazing feeling in the world!”
The Unit T3 Mindtricks BMX Jam in Taupo was held at a public recreational park, with Mildon carving an 20m (66ft) high super-ramp into a hillside that flowed through a 3.6m (11ft) high super-kicker to Jed’s purpose-built Mega-Megabox landing.
Unit founder Paul Everest congratulated Mildon on his amazing feat.
“Jed has proven himself to be one of the world’s best BMX riders and we salute him for having both the drive and ability to change the face of action-sports.
“He has shown the world what is possible if you take your dream and single-mindedly chase your goals without being distracted or listen to the critics and naysayers.”
An estimated 2000 spectators and some of New Zealand’s best BMX riders converged on Spa Park for the Unit T2 Mindtricks BMX Jam and to witness Mildon’s historical feat. Mildon also attempted the world’s first Double Backflip Tailwhip after his successful Triple attempt, but cased the landing. He walked away unscathed.
Christchurch’s Jake Prebble also set his sights on the Mega-Mega Box set-up and landed his first front-flip, then followed it up with a spectacular Front Flip Superman Indy.
The Unit T3 Mindtricks BMX Jam was made possible with the help of Unit, Bikefest and Taupo District Council, MB Century, McDonald’s Taupo, theairbag.co.nz, foampit.co.nz and Pilgrim Bike Co.

The first guy to ever pull a backflip was not Dave Mirra but Jose Yanez, in 1985 (riding for Hutch : hutchbmx.com), and, I think Matt Hoffman did some before Mirra too.
Anyway, need to have some guts to do a triple one.
CORRECTION: this is the kind of stuff you see when you hack video games...
"The kiwi is a curious bird, it cannot fly, has loose, hair-like feathers and long whiskers." It was a joke because New Zealanders are often referred to as "Kiwi's" because the Kiwi is an unofficial national emblem of New Zealand.
Do you understand the joke now.......?
just a matter of time untill lacondeguy does it on a 26".
Who said I am hating? I am not a Maori people to hate some white guy doing tripleflips or the sport he is in, am I?
Ahh, just chill guys, and think of this as a political debate - no one wins
this guy is nuts
Go get a ride, I did, felt much better
"Look mom. I can ride my bike with no hands!"
"Great son! But can you do triple backflip?"
jed 23yr:
"in your face mom!"
:-D
And I second that I hope you have a horrible day.
That's a bit strong, sure Wrongway could have started his comment with a congrats to Mildon, but i think just criticising his comment is enough. What are you 12 or summin?
As for for calculating speed and angle etc this is also untrue, yes the seed he travels and the angle of the ramp will have an impact, but the only situation in which these things could be calculated to predict the outcome would be if the distribution of mass and frontal area remained constant,(a car is the closest realistic example) so for a rider on a bike this isn't true and his body shape and initial actions at take off will have a huge effect... Practise is the only way.
edit: i know your kidding piks so dont take my reply seriously
@ The People who think its all physics, you have obviusly never jumped a bike before. In case you havent noticed, you develop a natural feel for how fast you need to go and you just know where you are going to land. The same thing applies to doing backflips, you get a feel for where you are going to land. This definately is not physics, its all practise.
Because that is where the sport is going.
Ah, and I almost forgot - in 3D HD Slow motion, please.
Who's up for a 4 backflips in a row?
Nice day to you too guys!
P.S. I was at that event, I would say the same thing, after applauding him. That is just who I am, I say what I think, and a few of my teeth have paid the price. So all you internet haters - return question - Can you say it in my face?
I do see where you are coming form, after about the worlds first septuple backflip, it probably would be much more amazing then a sectuple flip. But thats not the case at the moment so this was still wicked. And you have to learn to accept where the sports heading, if you dont like it, instead of posting hate comments on the internet why dont you get out there riding and try and change the sports direction yourself?
show me where?
One more time - physics thing was an exaggeration. I have some school years behind my back to know that you can't stop a rotation like that mid air. (Well Chuck can, but that is a whole other level)
Guys get some weed, you all are too stressed.
P.S. There is one rule in life, that I have found to be unbreakable - those who say anything about kicking someones face, never kick that face. So there you go.
Sir
Those are the magic words.
The same about kicking - you never said it, but I doubt you would take me to a dentist to remove some teeth?
It is all about interpretation, can we agree on that?
