Video: Inside X-Fusion's Inverted Revel Fork

Dec 22, 2013
by Marketing Manager
X-Fusion recently introduced their Revel upside down trail fork at the last Interbike trade show, and one of the most interesting aspects is that it is to be built at their U.S. headquarters in Santa Cruz, California. Here is a preview video showing the process of building the first pilot production models.

I'll pay $2,000 to get it in black! In all seriousness though, I'm glad X-Fusion is getting the attention they deserve.
  • 19 7
But that gold looks pimp as fook! Be turning heads with that thing.
  • 31 28
The gold looks absolutely shite and goes with nothing but gold stuff. It would be a smoking hot fork in black or gun metal but gold come on. And the way you can tune the forks spring rate by adding different air levels at the top or bottom of the leg is just cool as, I would love to test one out to see if that actually works as it should.
  • 17 4
I personally love the all-gold. I think it would go with pretty much any color frame, and from a marketing stand point, it will definitely get some attention. I really hope they make a 200mm DH version if this!

Ain't nobody talk shit bout Johan.

I'm sure there is a more subtle color on the way, they know most people don't want something that flashy. It's the same approach as DVO, they use a color that you can spot from a mile away, so when you see one, there is no mistaking it for anything else. Glad to see a single crown inverted fork, it's going to rattle the cage for fox and RS, wouldn't mind taking one for a spin.

I saw tattoos and flannel, these guys must know their stuff.

$2000 dollars? Are you fuc***g insane? New parts are out of control now a days. Ill buy used when all the pretty rich boys sell them for new parts. I could give two shits if its black or gold as long as the thing works. What is this sport coming to? get a damn Krylon can.

I'm all about looks, bro. And I'll be sure to sell you my custom black Revel when I'm done with it.

Cool, Ill hit you up in a year.....

These forks are being made all in the US in a limited quantity. I doubt they'd make a second color unless they make them outside of the country
  • 7 1
@mutiny5050 If the parts are also domestically sourced, its worth the $2000. Also, take into consideration the factory backing that comes with the purchase, and the fact its a genuine limited production run, real exclusivity here. not a 50% markup on sticker upgrade. Insane are $1500usd forks being mass produced in factories that pays their workers $500usd annually. In regards to bikes, am not one of those about being among a few to have. So I hope to see this design brought down to the average rider price point.
  • 2 2
Sean Kingston could buy a dozen and still fit his neck.
  • 3 0
I thought they said on a previous post that the gold was a limited run of 500 or something. You're paying for a pimpin, rare, american made fork; very cool.
  • 4 6
It's a nice looking fork. But I'll be sticking to my Solo air Pike.
  • 4 1
mutiny5050 youre absolutely right. so many riders out there with top level bikes with all the trimings and shiny kits... they slow me down on the trail!
  • 9 5
There was a huge problem with the Vector RC or at least a batch of them. I popped mine twice, on a very small and smooth jump. It could have been very dangerous if the jump didn't happen to have a manicured berm after it that I could stop on. The reason for it popping was that the cap screw they used came loose so after a while, on impact the oil just comes out. It happened they first time after 2 months of owning the bike, so luckily it was on warranty but when it was sent away to X Fusion they tried to blame it on me. It then happened again at the beginning of this month after 10 months of owning it. Both times X Fusion have been very slow at dealing with it. Out of 10 months of owning it, it has been in the shop for the same reason, due to no fault of my own, for 2 months and counting. So for 20% of the time I have owned it, I haven't been able to use it because of X Fusion. I'm sure their higher end kit is very good, and actually, when working, the shock was very good, but I'm not risking wasting anymore of my riding time by buying more of their kit.
  • 3 0
I have the same prob haha
  • 5 3
the gold one looks nicer than the black one imo
  • 3 2
Mutiny5050, it's produced here, and is a limited run. It's to elevate the brand, and it's clearly not for you. Don't be upset! Smile
  • 4 0
The gold is sick! But all other branding on your bike will have to be removed and just repainted a single matte color, cause you can only have so much pop without looking like some Jersey shore guido...
  • 3 2
 Yes! Fist pumps for X-Fusion
  • 4 1
EVERYBODY has black forks, the gold is sick and unique.
  • 5 3
I don't know why I got neg propped for this... It's just warning people. If you choose not to listen then in not stopping you, I'm just helping some people out.
  • 2 1
Lukachadwick, my experience of X-Fusion is practically identical to yours except with a failed DLA and creak. But I got the top cap oil shower too. Try to tell people that a product has problems and you get neg proped by people who have never even ridden on the bloody things.
  • 1 0
I had the same problem happen in the first couple of months, got it repaired but not sure now if I want to keep using it if it will happen again.
  • 1 0
krylon paint sucks the big one, to thin, a store brand or rustoluem will work better
  • 1 1
So it's assmbled in USA to be sure oil volumes are right and they can stick a made in USA sticker on them, and offer custom neg spring change, but all their parts are made in Taiwan or China right?
Still good for quick customer service and warranty, but tell it as it is.
  • 2 0
The fork featured in the above article is probably machined in Taiwan and the USA and assembled in the USA. I suspect all others are 100% made in Taiwan, probably nothing is made in China.
  • 16 0
Riding footage of inverted forks makes my bottom bracket tingle.
  • 14 2
Just like a 20 year old hotty. I want but cant afford. This fork is wicked!
  • 11 2
Sounds like the settings on this fork can really be dialed in with the dual chamber design. I'll be interested to see some more reviews but this looks like a great start!
  • 8 1
You can adjust your ramp up. I like that.
  • 2 0
You can adjust the ramp up but also at what point you activate the larger chamber changing the feel of the fork entirely. Really cool stuff, I'm excited to get on one of these.
  • 1 0
 Same as Pikes chips really.
  • 7 0
Paul Turner and the bald dude either need subtitles or they need to enunciate.

Im not to interested in seeing a fork being "tested" on buffed out single track, looks like it handles breaking bumps and 2" roots good. Lets see some drops to flat and rock garden action!
  • 1 0
Lol, I know the slow-mo over the 2" roots was a bit over the top haha
  • 9 1

Yes, but alas X-Fusion forks last 5 minutes. You be dying unhappy waiting for it to come back from the 10th warranty rebuild. Been there, done that, never again.
  • 2 2
Zmc888 - That sounds like a Kona comment from back in the days...
  • 1 0
ZMC888, Maybe you were just riding it too hard for its intended application...
  • 2 1
Had a Velvet that took more than its fair share of abuse from dirt jumping and light street riding. My Vengeance has also handled DJ/Street and some FR. And seriously, it takes all of an hour to rebuild stuff yourself.
  • 3 2
Firstly the DLA died on the first day. Sent back for repairs, then a bolt two months later sheared covering me with oil when I did a 50cm drop. I weigh 180lbs. LindLTaylor you must seriously weigh under 120lbs, ride only occasionally or be extremely lucky to have owned two X-Fusions without a problem. I've owned many forks, Marzocchi and Manitou hold up far better top long term abuse than the rest. Also how the hell can I rebuild it without the parts?

Waki, seriously Kona comment? No many people hated on Kona because they just hated, never even rode one. Then there were the others that hated on them because they actually owned one and found out that the aluminum they were made from was the same quality as a cola can and cracked easily and weighed a ton. Worst of all worlds.
  • 1 0
I've demoed x-fusions and i was satisfied, but my heart lies with marzocchi and fox, rock shox was alright but i like my companies to be focused on one specific thing. Its like shimano coming out with a new suspension system for the market..
  • 1 0
ZMC, I weigh a 150lbs and rode daily when I had complete bikes. I do a lot of home wrenching and most employees at my LBS know me by my first name. I've also ordered parts from XF directly to do repairs as well as make upgrades and they're really easy to get a hold of, I've never had problems with their customer service.

What fork did you have? DLA isn't specific to the Vengeance anymore so for all we know you could have been riding on the rather toothpick-ish Velvet.
  • 2 0
Marzocchi RAC, Shivver SC, Manitou Dorado SC, Maverick SC32, Atomlab GI 60...

There have been a few inverted SC forks on the market over the years, all with seemingly ridiculous prices (both ends of the spectrum) and the Revel is priced to contend.
  • 1 0
LindLTaylor, 6 months ownership and three months away being repaired isn't good enough. I have had a Marzocchi 66 that only needed an oil and wiper seal change once every 2 years, zero warranty issues. Yep, I have a Velvet. Oh, so the Velvet is toothpickish, and if it fails on the first day that's OK then? Maybe I have to ride on the road to get to the mountains and needed a light fork?

Some Schwalbe tires get chewed up in a few weeks, many Crank Bros products fail, Kona bikes are heavy and X-Fusion forks are unreliable. They are just the facts of MTB.
  • 1 0
I can understand that a product that was away being fixed for half of your ownership time would really tick you off, but you also described a problem with them that I've never heard of or read about before. So before you say an entire company's worth of product is unreliable, check and see how many other people have had problems before. Yes, XF has a reputation of having some product being DOA or failing quickly, but every company will have to face that eventually, and everybody I personally know who has had an XF product before gas had zero complaint about it. you can buy pros, but you can't buy customer loyalty like that.

I would also submit that the reason it was gone 3 months would have to be circumstantial rather than entirely XF's fault. For instance, your flag shows up as China. That's gonna take a while to get there and back, and I would think that you would have known that beforehand.

Did you buy it secondhand or brand new? What kind if riding were you doing when it failed? What riding gear were you wearing and did you set the fork up properly beforehand? There are a lot if variables we don't have, and one of them likely will explain what happened and why.
  • 1 1
A few things...Firstly there's the fact that the forks are made in Taiwan. Taiwan and China don't see eye to eye politically but speak mostly the same language share a similar culture and write almost the same way as each other so the parts excuse is null and void. It's just a few hundred kms across the water. Secondly another friend has had similar problems to me. Also the creaking head tube and loose breaking top cap oil shower are all well known problems, many are mentioned on these boards by other users. I asked to pay extra to upgrade to a tougher Vengence and they said no. So you are lucky and I'm unlucky. I have great success with Marzocchi and Manitou forks that have just worked reliably for me in the past. Seriously the fork died on it's first ride, the again a month later, I've lost all confidence in their products, so seeing a crazy expensive fork made by them just makes me feel sick, especially with a newly assembled fanboi crew who haven't even ridden their products. Seriously I'd rather be on a Suntour, I think they are much more reliable.

 26in wheels on that Spesh?
  • 2 1
The forks inverted. You can fit a 26 on a 650b without having a fucked length
  • 1 0
Spesh hasn't braved up to try 650B/27.5". Meantime, the lengths are fine but the rake/fork offset will feel off going from one to the other.
  • 1 0
Hauers talked about it a bunch. You can throw a 26 on the 650b model
  • 3 0
i may be the only one who found the last few minutes after the riding the most interesting, that's the part to care about, knowing how the forks internals actually work. and the brains behind it as well
  • 2 0
Couldn't agree with you more. The riding clips weren't that great, nor were they very important..
  • 2 0
I'd have preferred to see the damping internals myself. You could tailor the spring curve with oil or Pike style chips easy enough. It is a cool system, but just another seal to fail IMO.
  • 1 0
The creaking can be sorted with locktite primer 7649 too prepare the surfaces where the stanchions meet the crown and steerer into crown then locktite 638 same again. Was trying too find where I'd read this but no luck. Thing is the locktite stuff costs about £50!

  • 1 0
I know we just find the incorrect pronounciation funny that's all. bit like the spelling issues the Americans have too lol
  • 1 0
jojoba is a Spanish word and you don't pronounce the J but use h so it sounds like hohoba. generally speaking when foreign words are integrated into our language we use the original pronounciation.
  • 1 0
I just love the way you guys spell "o" and "h" Smile
  • 1 0
Would the key way system at 2:04 not start wearing either the stanchions or the locating slots & then give side to side play?
Nice looking fork though. Have to agree with the others that would prefer it in black. Dual air is great for people that like to fettle but in reality may not be adjusted too much by most & getting exact air pressures in forks on releasing the pump is still not easy.
And lastly, dude, when you ask a question let the guy answer FFS instead of answering it yourself.
  • 1 0
The small keys look replaceable and are probably a component designed to wear. The bushings around the stanchions prevent side to side play, the keys give it torsional rigidity. A little wear in those and you'd probably never notice any difference in stiffness or play.
  • 1 0
Do your stanchion wear your bushing? Yes, but if it is well designed, they will need a long time to have some play. There is the same system in the last reviewed dropper.
  • 1 0
I would love to test this fork! The fork seems built right. Kinda like a dual spring but with air. Easy to control how stiff you would like it for the course you ride. 2000 is very steep for a fork sorry. I don't know how people can afford this stuff.
  • 1 0
Non expert here, but question : Wouldn't having the moving / active parts of the suspension closer to the ground ( see : rocks, mud, sticks, water, snakes, squirrels ) result in a faster breakdown of the suspension ?
  • 1 0
Thats why theres guards on the front of the stanchions, as for mud and water, forks have dust seals for a reason. Also, inverted stanchions are at no more risk for gouges, dings, scrapes, and scratches than any other fork. I'd be more worried about blowing a seal, losing fluid then having my bushings destroy my stanchions. Thats what happened to my Van 36's..
  • 1 0
If they expect 2k for a single crown trail fork then we need to be able to test it at any local X fusion dealer. We all laughed at the guy spending big money on the girl that wouldn't put out!
  • 1 0
After a full season on my slant rl2 air (non dla), i am still blown away by its performance for the price !
After riding marzo, rockshox, fox in the past the x fusion is better a lot better than my fox rlc .
  • 2 0
I must have it. I hate the color and yet it is so sick I love it. Both of my Testicles are now posted up on the classifieds.

 Dude, perhaps a kidney first?

Or a child?
  • 2 0
Those steel pins with grease rubbing against the aluminum to keep it torsionally stiff seems like a recipe for disaster. DVO has it right. www.dvosuspension.com
  • 2 2
I have a Velvet, 2 warranty issues in 6 months. 3 months away being repaired. Don't trust their products' longevity the steel pins seem like a bodge more than an engineering idea. I'll be buying a Pike.
  • 1 0
lol...had to look it up. BODGE- A quick and dirty job, something done very hastily. Make it look good for the next day or two and if it falls down after that, it's alright.
  • 4 4
Having 2 chambers where you can change the air pressure is not a new thing. Rock shox have had it for years in their xc fork and have recently removed it from a lot of the range. Even the boxxer world cup comes with a version of it, they call it bottom out, next to nobody uses it, they just dont touch the dial, which changes the volume of the positive air chamber. The old marz 140mm fork had both air pressures available to the rider also. Not a fan of the gold look, would put me off straight away.
  • 7 0
RockShox Dual Air had a tunable positive and negative spring, whereas the X-Fusion dual air has two tunable positive air springs. With RS the adjustment only affects the first 1/3, whereas with X-Fusion the adjustment affecs the last 1/3 of travel.
  • 1 0
inverted single crown! worth the wait! wont be buying but will enjoy to see x-fusion getting the props they deserve, the over simplified pneumatics at the end was a bit cringe though
  • 1 1
This fork looks really sweet, but I'm skeptical of inverted forks. Why aren't there more of these around? The industry has seen several inverted forks come and go. One of the biggest reasons: Flex. With no arch to bridge the lower legs, there's bound to be flex since the rectangle of rigidity (axle-lower legs-arch) is incomplete. And then when there's flex, there's binding on the stanchions as the lower legs flex. I'm not saying this new Revel flexes but I'm just not sold on inverted. This may also be why we don't see inverted on many motocross bikes either. Still, it's a sweet looker.

I have to say IF I had an enduro bike and the money for that fork - I'd totally be with X-Fusion - it's something different and convincing !
  • 1 2
Try owning one, I assure you it's unconvincing, same as the muppets in flannel shirts in the video.
  • 4 1
interesting fork , and killer trail where is that
  • 5 2
If your local to Santa Cruz, you'd know exactly where it was.
  • 5 3
If you're from Northern California and mtb is your life you know exactly where it is.
  • 5 1
If you are from anywhere, it's best that you don't know where these trails are.
  • 1 0
this fork looks to work really well and have lots of adjustments, but seriously X-fusion must care a little more about design !!!
  • 2 0
Can't wait for the PB review on this. Will it get the "approved for enduro?"
  • 1 0
It does the same thing as my emerald. Crappy or happy? Ill save from investing until something that can make me ride better comes out....
  • 1 0
This makes me miss my old shiver sc forks, they were hella flexy but felt like you were on air on the trail, never got anything set up as perfect as them since...
  • 2 1
Maybe after X-Fusion is done selling out this production run, they can afford to purchase some hats in the correct size.
  • 1 0
Can anyone explain to me the bonus of having it inverted, other than that it is different?
  • 3 0
Better suspension performance since the oil inside the fork will naturally gravitate towards the working, moving internals. Among other things.
  • 1 0
Unsprung weight movement is another huge asset of an inverted fork. If you can lower the "moving weight" away, you add a huge amount of tuning capabiliity and sensitivity increases to small bumps.
  • 2 0
Cheaper to manufacture. Seals stay lubbed better. Unsprung weight is pretty much nonsense or irrelevant with bicycle forks. More fore/aft stiffness. More bushing overlap maybe.
They should've ditched the key way, and just made a small travel triple clamp for AM/Enduro use IMO. Would have all the benefits and either lighter, stiffer, shorter, or more travel. License Manitous Hex axle or dodge the patent somehow.
Or just make conventional single crowns.
These are probably nice, and should feel plush, but a step backwards IMO. Speculating the Keyway will either not last long, need lots of servicing, or create a lot of friction/binding or a combo of all. Hopefully I'm wrong. I'd still buy a set if they were as cheap and light as Pikes as they're probably not half bad.
  • 2 0
Maybe 26" bikes are still fast and fun.
  • 1 0
X-Fusion is legit. I hope they do make this fork in black and get the price down. I'd be lining up
  • 1 0
X-Fusion all the way and so pleased at last they are getting taken seriously, real high value quality and proper prices.
  • 1 0
Is the keyway only on one fork leg? Or Both? And it doesn't use any roller bearings like the lefty does?
  • 1 0
will the alcohol dry out the dust wipers (assuming the dust wipers are rubber)?
  • 1 0
won't these be less stiff and heavier than a set of comparable right way up forks
  • 1 0
I'm not huge on the Puffy Dizzle color scheme, but that sheezy is off heezy hella mad dope yo!
  • 1 0
The fork looks stiff and good working, but the color is a pain. I think black ones will be sold more if they would exist.

  • 1 0
