I like josh but this is such a waste of talent! Think he'll regret wasting his best years doing this rubbish. I know they're his mates but he's being dragged down. None of them have his ability or the remote chance of winning World cups. If he was my mate I'd give him a slap and tell him to not waste such an opportunity. He should stick to racing,he can do this when he's past his best.
  • 55 10
If that's what he's enjoying most then why not? I can totally see your point and I'm gutted he won't be on the WC scene but he's gotta do what's right for him.
  • 91 18
I don't know him, and i have no idea what percentage he spends doing this or serious training, but this vid was just like a bunch of twats , twatting about, if it was me and you no one would watch it.
The fish eye now gets on my tits, it's like watching a clip with those blurry strips either side.
And the constant shouting........... shit i'm getting old and cynical lol
  • 17 5
a change up might be nice. in a way it's like the punk rock of mtb edits but eventually things change and people want to see something new. I'm digging Josh is making a statement and will keep tabs on where this leads.
  • 30 4
Totally agree. I said in another post that unless his content gets better it'll gradually get fewer and fewer views because nothing else will thrust josh into our attention.

does skid in mud - YEOOOOWWWW

does another skid in mud - YEEEOOOOWW

crashes on small step up - YEOOWWWWEE

does another skid - YEOooEeewwwW

It's offseason, they're just having fun. Josh is old enough to decide how to spend time.
  • 26 5
If he has more fun doing this than racing is it really wrong?
He probably gets more stoke and exposure releasing weekly videos with his friends and pals than living the stressful live of travelling the world and having to constantly push harder to maintain a top 10 results so people on here can be happy. He won the overall two years ago, which is more than what 95% of "real" racers can aspire too...

I for one greatly encourage him to continue pushing out fun videos with the lads than seeing a vid once in a while of bike company p-r this and that where a certain athlete has to perform/show training on the w-c level...
  • 19 5
I agree... have some time out if you need it but time goes so fast... it would appear from the outside your fucking it up !! Shit I sound like my dad.... but he was right !!
  • 10 3
I think he's having way more fun doing this kind of stuff than he's having at world cup racing, so why you don't let him do it? He had enough time to think about that decision, he didn't quit wc racing out of the blue.
I think it is way cooler to have a pro doing this kind of videos than only racing or doing high-polished ultra hd edits. It keeps the sport real, i like it.
  • 4 2
@r0bb: yeh maybe, but I can't help think he'll regret it when he's older. During the 2nd half of the season when he won the overall he just made it look so easy and he seemed to be really enjoying himself. Has he said why he's not racing anymore (apart from the carbon footprint rumour)?
  • 15 6
Mike sounds like an asian parent.
  • 15 3
@r0bb: He can do whatever he wants, I don't care. I will just stop paying attention. And if too many people do the same thing as me he will have to get a job. Maybe racing? Maybe in an office.
  • 14 6
@mikelee it would be a waste of life not to do the thing you love most. And the guy is old enough not to need some internet wise ass telling him what's best for him.
  • 15 2
It's 2017. everybody needs an internet wise ass telling him what's best for him
  • 10 4
@bonkywonky: true but if he wants to keep making a living biking he needs to listen to us "internet wise asses". it didn't matter what we thought when he was winning races but his new thing seems to be videos and that completely relies on us watching. personally I don't find his solo riding as entertaining as seeing his style blasting WC tracks with real photographers getting solid shots.
  • 7 2
well maybe it is just me, but didnt enjoy this video as much as I did the older ones from 50:01...one little step up and every third attempt somebody couldnt even clean it...I mean, the riding wasnt anyhow outstanding this time, I hope next time it will be more fun to watch
  • 7 1
@darren853: I thought it was kind of cool that they were keeping the stoke levels high even for the riders that obviously aren't their standard, just trying to get over the step up, it's good support
  • 5 1
 @ryanridesbikes: Medals for participation?
  • 5 0
If this is what calls to him than I think racing World Cups would be a waste of talent. There's a lot more to life than "winning", if his heart isn't in racing then it's just another job. Not too many young people get to truly follow their passion like Mr. Rat, I'm happy for him.

That being said I get tired of these videos pretty quickly.
  • 14 2
Not sure I agree with you there @mikelee, Ratboy mentioned in that interview shot with a cell phone that he wasn't into the World Cup tracks...and he wanted to keep DH wild, and that he was bored with the bike park tracks.

Not everyone rides mountain bikes for the glory, and not everything is a competition. You don't have to "be the best." He already won all he needs to, on to something different. I thought he'd go to school since I have seen him post more than one Chomsky cover on his feed. The dude is much smarter than your average downhiller.

He quit while he was ahead, no shame in that and now he gets paid to be a lifestyle rider. That's the dream job there, Ratboy is Matt Hunter with mud and tea.
  • 2 1
@artusbiker: lol my nephew is called Brandon lee, so yes I am!
  • 2 3
@rideRB: he is, but don't try and pass it off as worthwhile content
  • 2 1
I hope he just takes a sabbatical for a couple of years, rediscovers the fire of racing, and comes back. Don't forget he's been on the circuit for about twenty years, and he's only 21.

If not, so what? Maybe he'll get a real job. Maybe he's already got his mortgage paid off so he doesn't need a real job.
  • 4 0
@nismo325: I read he'll be doing other projects as well (even including some enduro stuff) so he will not rely completely on those little 50 to 01 videos.

And to me it seems he's really done with racing since the 2015 season as he has rarely (correct me if I'm wrong here) podiumed since his crash at the Worlds, either at the WC or BDS. In terms of raw skill he's definitely up there with the best but if you aren't fully behind it you might as well quit at this level.
  • 4 0
so if your not riding in the world cup you are wasting your talent? I think he proved he can be the best, but rather tha having a year off not finishing top 20s and getting frustrated he has changed directions, I think it´s cool, it is tricky and it can be a mess up, but I trust the rat, god save the rat!

Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback. Every bit gets taken onboard, for us it's all constructive be it criticism or a big up. I also like to take time on replying in order for people to realise that we aren't doing this for the sake of pushing pointless fast edits out, i'm wanting to provide regular content as i feel personally we dont get enough in the mtb scene right now - There are so many sick crews of riders who id love to try encourage to get on the band wagon too, above everything i am a heavy MTB fan and always find myself sat staring at my laptop waiting for some footage to get hyped on. The aim is simply to share the buzz and passion for riding bikes - regardless of skill level or status i like to share a session and see progression no matter who they are or what theyre doing - me and rat were STOKED to see sponge and fabio get over the step up and i felt it was right to share that. I realise we have been uploading content extremely regular which may be diluting the actual focus, i spoke with rat this morning about the matter and discussed where we could take it - concluding that we shall turn our focus to a less frequent more banger heavy monthly 50to01 round up with more regular instagram updates - is this something you guys think would work better? As for being 'pinkbike worthy' please understand this was uploaded on the 50to01 youtube where we upload regular stuff for the people who love the frequency on there - i had not submitted as a pinkbike blog, although i am always extremely grateful for the share Smile I have just got some great new cameras from Canon and upgraded my editing software to premier pro (which is effin complicated to get used to) so expect the edits and shots to become more quality, honestly seeing these comments were a great motivation boost to learning and expanding my skills on the media front and to keep things always fresh and creative so thankyou everyone for the opinions and honesty - Its all love from me and the twatty twats!!! hahaha keep shredding... Loose X
  • 11 0
@LadLife: Nice one.. big respect for the reply.. good luck with your future projects.
  • 6 1
@LadLife: don't stress it. The regular stuff so far this year has been great. This is a minor blip in the creative content which is perfectly understandable whilst you get used to the new kit / software. Once you've spent more time with it then I'm sure we can all expect the creative quality that came before but with the addition of better quality video with your new gear!

Keep the regular youtube updates please, but maybe consider taking a bit of a break releasing stuff until you've mastered the new kit. Instagram is always good though - we love any old shit that you put on there!

Thanks as ever and keep it up.

@LadLife: Can't argue with that lad
  • 3 0
@LadLife - I really like the way a riding session is captured, not just the big names whipping and hipping all over the place but also the regular riders just clearing the jumps. My personal favourite has to be the tight lines one, might actually steal some ideas from it for my own tracks..
  • 4 2
@LadLife: I'd make a suggestion and it's been eluded to in other comments. This is from a dad who films his kids sports a lot. Nothing ruins good content like the guy on the back of the camera sharing "too much" of his vocal chords. I sometimes ruin good videos of my kids yapping or cheering. Let all the other guys in the background hoot and holler and just film. The stoke will still come through.

Ignore the comment about filming guys who can't clear the jump. Pretty sure most of us realized it was a less experienced rider giving it a go. It helps us remember this stuff is f-ing hard.

As for Ratboy's direction, I'm selfish. I want the guy who ate shit so hard he went off the mountain at World Champs back on my screen because I'm a racer at heart. That has no bearing on how he lives his life. I love f*ck ups, lazy people, badasses who train their tales off, people who can do it all at once. If they race and are worth watching, I'm tuned in.

That goes for you too. Do whatever you want to do and have fun.
  • 1 0
@LadLife: the fact that you answer proves you guys are up to something and not just f*cking which seems to be what some people are suggestin, I found this edit still as amusing as others and feel you do very well in sharing how you guys are so stoked about biking... Please keep posting sick stuff, I will always look froward to it!

ps, what was in the mystery bag??? Loved the random prize draw!

@LadLife: These videos are great, keep posting!

He don't like it, he's got enough sponsors to keep doing what he wants, so power to him

Nico Vink, Vinny T and friends don't have issue on not racing WC.

@LadLife: buzzin with all the vids keep em coming

I'm a big Bryceland fan, but sorry to say, I find these edits pretty boring. Gotta put more effort into it, or afraid I'm gonna tune out. Tell a story, do rad stuff, use fancy camera work -- whatever, just do something more interesting, please.
  • 41 4
Actually this kind of edit (raw footy of guys pissing about in the woods) makes me want to ride my bike more than those cinematic masterpieces that are common across the pond. Might be because that is pretty much exactly what riding is about for me so I can relate to it.

I must have watched A slice of British pie over 20 times by now..
  • 17 1
Well, do not take me wrong, but A slice of British pie was much more fun to watch compared to this
  • 13 0
cheers guys, hopefully i touched on this above - thanks for the honesty and im stoked to step up my skills and create some different stuff. much love... loose
  • 2 0
@LadLife: I think your videos are great (minus the fisheye) but for some ideas how about doing a 50:01 annual ride? Invite the public to come along come along, session the spots and ride some tasty trails? Could even host the jibbing world championship's, it would be a laugh and the mother of all sessions with a belter of an edit at the end. Just a thought to keep what you love doing interesting to people on sites like this #
  • 4 0
@piersgritten: thanks man, deffo have already spoke about that. On an official level and just low key drop on insta sayin we'll be here at a certain time and day come get involved. I also want to start running some comps by setting a jib or line, first to submit a pulled one gets a prize. Its for sure something we are going to do, ultimately give back to the sport and find and help some talent! One crew we had a wicked time with is the dusty huckers. From wales, such a stylish group of guys... worth a check out. Thanka for the ideas and feedback Smile all the best

 Wasn't that called 'Drop In'?

If the biking doesen't work out for the Rat, he can always become a footmodel. Yeowsa!!!

I just love it when Josh goes "Yeeeeeeeetttttttt!!!". Down right hysterical. Glad to see him enjoying himself as much as I hate to see him skip out this years World Cup season. You know what they say, "Follow your hearts content." That right there is what Josh is doing. A true inspiration. Ride on lads.
  • 12 5
 Annoying
  • 7 1
eeeyeeewww! hope I spelled it right...
  • 2 0
Let a thousand clicks decide. Naysayers punt--or make their own vids. Rat barge will be paid off twice over in t-shirt sales--note the transition from slick conditions to well-appointed dining room. In addition to the AC/DC & Rat Man references, older cinephiles may see something of the ping pong sequence in Haneke's 71 Fragments in the editing here. Go rats!
  • 2 0
Your racing days are over if you don't have the fire, Josh can do what he wants. The part of the video that was important for me is that there are people out there in the world casing as many jumps as I do! It's a revelation!

I need to know what was in the "mystery bag"....
  • 9 4
Yeeeah lads nice vid. Love the homegrown vibes. Nothing but good times!
  • 10 5
Not a worthwhile expenditure of my time at all.
  • 6 1
why dos it feel like this video was made in 1999?

WHAT WAS IN THE MYSTERY BAG?
  • 5 5
Always liked Josh throughout his career with Santa Cruz. I really want to like what he's doing now but I can't. Such a waste of talent IMO. Hope Santa Cruz re thinks investing into him if he continues with this way of showcasing talent. Not Pinkbike worthy material.

They always shoot the best step-ups!!
  • 1 0
Reminds me of Sprung vids and thats why I got into riding mountain bikes. keep it up lads dicking about more is mint! If you want "serious MTB vids" go watch the Athertons.
  • 5 3
Looks like they're having so much fun. I know that's my goal when I think about riding bikes.
  • 1 0
I think he'll shoot for the Guy Martin angle, chose lorry mechanic over professional bike racer because he loves it and fixing stuff is fun, just like boat building.
  • 3 4
The worst edit of any video ive had the displeasure of watching.
Full of morons who struggle to even string a sentence together that resembles anything more then a bunch of stoners .
Josh is actually getting paid to dish this sort of drivvle out ,its unbeleivele .
Racing is and should become more proffesional with hart greg gwinn all great examples of this.dh racing is better without these sort of plebs.
Goons messing about has been done before and its just not funny entertaining or intersting to the sport.
The whole scent there into consists of lets talk like druggies, lets have little respect for property that doesn,t belong to us (hire vehicles) and lets bere are arses because were chavs and constantly behave like 5 yr olds.
Pisses me off .
  • 2 0
I'm guessing a lot of things "Pisses you off"

That's probably happens a lot when you're a grumpy twat who can't even spell & assumes a hell of a lot.

PS: Have a nice day Wink
  • 4 0
Look, I apologies for the spelling remark.. It's a shitty thing to do & not something I would normally do, except maybe when the other person is calling someone plebs/morons and druggies just because maybe you don't like this content or their lifestyle isn't 100% in tune with your own.

Ratboy is a living legend & so are the 50to01 boys and they inspire 1000's of people to go and and ride everyday & seeing them cheer on guys who like me who don't having amazing skills is truly awesome.

Keep, keeping it real Boys.

Love you's all..!

PS: You have to trash hire cars... That's basic physics.. Don't you even skool Bro!

:P
  • 4 0
@Zen-Potatoes: yeah boy !!!! this is why i love the support for 50to01 ... some get it and some dont... and probably never will, best leaving them to the bitter keybord bashing :p :p (struggling to understand the level of negativity thats going on there??? "I'm gonna wake up and go full hate mode on these plebs" hahah... hope you managed to cheer up by now dude Smile )

Have a good weekend Smile
