Aaron Chase Bike Check: Pivot Point

Aaron Chase Bike Check The Pivot Point

Aaron Chase has been a freeride fixture for a couple of decades now, and while he's about as versatile a rider as they come, it's been the sturdy and simple dirt jumper that has provided the mountain bike world with some of his best moments. Whether it was years of street and dirt thrashing throughout the "New World Disorder" days, or more recently featured digging and riding alongside longtime friend Adam Hauck in "Builder", Aaron has shown us, time and time again, that every rider should spend some time on these simplest of rides. Dirt jumpers are relatively inexpensive, they last forever (in mountain bike years), and you can have fun on them in any season, regardless of where you call home.

2017 will be Aaron's third year as a Pivot athlete, and the Tempe, AZ-based brand likes to keep things simple when it comes to their dirt jumper offerings. The Point is the Pivot's singular representative, and the steel hardtail is sold as a frame only, with one size (M/L), and one colorway (Black w/Neon Lime). But d.j.'s aren't intended to be complex, do-it-all machines. They're built to do primarily one thing, and that's hit steep and lipped jumps.

Aaron's Point is beefy, yet relatively lightweight for this type of machine. At 6'1" and 172 lbs, Aaron might typically expect to find himself on a LG or XL frame, but the Point is a "one size fits all" deal. According to Aaron, "It's a smaller bike than I usually ride, but it feels great." Chase even has the weight down to just under 25 lbs, which might not be all that important to a lot of riders building up their own bikes, but when you pick up a bike like this, there's inevitably going to be a bit of envy.

Aaron's Point is in keeping with the minimalist frame styling, with virtually no flashy accents, just clean lines and a bullet-proof build.

Aaron runs a 36-tooth, narrow-wide RaceFace Atlas crank with RaceFace Chester pedals underfoot.

"I'm back on DT Swiss and I am stoked! DT-Swiss EX471 hoops on the 240 hubs look and feel great, and they complement the bike's minimalist style. Less is more!"
Aaron's cockpit controls come with a 785mm wide, uncut RaceFace Atlas bar with a 1 1/4" rise, attached to the steerer tube via a 40mm stem. "I'm a tall guy," he says between basement laps in his Vernon, NJ home. "And I like having my bars a little higher too. I've always thought that if you can keep the fork and headtube low, and bring up the height of the rider with the handlebars, it will provide you with greater leverage for tweaking."

Aaron keeps everything relatively firm on the Point as well, including his Fox 36 fork and his Maxxis DTH Skinwalls, the latter of which he prefers to run at 55 psi up front, and 65 psi in the back. The longtime Red Bull athlete has been on Maxxis rubber for the entirety of his career, and these particular tires "Make the bike look and feel so good."

The brake cable routing is indicative of Aaron's propensity for bar spins.

Hmmm......"DMRBIKES" on the headtube..... rebrand FAIL!
  • 30 4
Pivot and DMR are both distributed by Upgrade bikes in the UK, it could be a team effort, a Pivot design made by DMR bikes or something like that...it could just be a rebrand though.

Check out Pivot Cycles' spec page - www.pivotcycles.com/bike/point . . . "The Point is built from the highest grade DMR chromoly steel with perfectly tuned geometry and feel. "

In bike industry some parts are common to different brands. For example Reynodls manufacture tubes for many brands, especially for cromo frames. Here this tapered cromo headtube was certainly manufactured for DMR and Pivot decided to use it without engaging new manufacturing costs.

 nice head tube

@JesseE: That's not the same frame. This geo is not available through DMRs frames.

@Sylvain-F: that logic makes sense...except adding the "DMR BIKES" would be another manufacturing step and another cost to simply "buying a headtube" from DMR bikes. this is a re-stickered DMR bike.
  • 9 1
@ccolagio: it appears to be molded into the head tube. So, removing it would require grinding it off if it's part of a die or mold.

haaaa. how do i get down voted for knowing about manufacturing lol. hashtag internet

@trialsracer: a part like that headtube is not casted ("molded")

@Sylvain-F: sam reynolds produce chromo tubes yeah exactly.
  • 16 0
@Patrick9-32: You are correct! Upgrade is our partner, they own DMR, and we worked on this frame with them years ago. We didn't rebrand a frame, it is our own design, built by DMR.
  • 3 0
 @ccolagio: @trialsracer:
trialsracer is right, I saw this headtube with my own eyes the DMR logo is casted with the part.

EDIT :
Seen on DMR website : "DMR Investment cast tapered head tube"

You don't even need to look at the geometry chart to see that the geometry looks totally different between this Pivot and the DMR Sect. Also there are other differences such as the drop outs and the ISCG mounts. But it was indeed a bad decision to use the head tube with the stamped logo, that does cause for a lot of unnecessary confusion and doubts.
  • 3 1
@cauboi: ??? reynolds is a tubing manufacturer, obviously not sam reynolds...

Maybe pinkbike realized all their XC coverage was embarrassing and is now doing a huge overcorrection to make us forget.

@Marcusthefarkus: It's only once in a great while that someone can come along and spew nothing but idiocies, but I'll be damned if you aren't batting 1.000 when it comes to stupid comments.

Skinwalls are a thing of beauty.

I know I saw Tmac on some @ Rampage are these available to the public?
  • 1 0
@choppertank3e: Maxxis sell the Mininon DHF, Ardent and a few others with Skinwall.
  • 2 0
@choppertank3e: Yes. They are. I had them on my DJ bike but not too grippy on plywood or dirt (scared me, a little). Better on pavement.

What size wheels is it? is there a plus size version? Is there an enduro specific version?

Too many unanswered questions
  • 19 1
Is it Di2 compatible? What about boost standards? We may never know.
  • 15 1
@AgentSmirnoff: what about water bottle cages? Can I tape things to it?
  • 12 1
Yup, this is not the finished product. The production version will run 29+ wheels, superboost hubs, internal cable routing, dropper post, radial brake mount, metric shock mount (just in case...), 50t cog in the rear for making it up those very steep lips and it will of course come with electronic pedal assist.

That is, it will be unlike the DMR 898.

A DJ bike is one life's great pleasures. I have a Santa Cruz jackal with a pike DJ up front and just love it. That bike is a blast every time I ride it and seriously improves my trail skills when I go back on my giant trance.

Rebranded DMR Sect...Way to go Pivot!
  • 4 3
 This is hilarious to me.
  • 18 2
Not the same bike... Pivot design DMR manufacture.

It would calm my OCD sooo much if we just all stop calling hydraulic hoses "cables".

It doesn't feel the same without a Cannondale under AC
  • 4 1
"Aaron's Point is in keeping with the minimalist frame styling, with virtually no flashy accents, just clean lines and a bullet-proof build..." since when is high-vis yellow frame decals and neon orange fork decals considered "no flashy accents"?
  • 5 1
I've always wanted to build up a DJ bike. However, at the end of the day I always talk myself out of it. But damn... This bike makes it that much harder not to want to.
  • 14 0
you should probably build a dj. they are so fun and i think riding some jumps and street teaches great skills for riding trail.
  • 3 0
@adrennan: You're not making this easier! lol

Yeah, those are the two things that always pop into my head when I think about getting one (fun and learing skills). We'll see.. I'm sure I will. Just gotta start saving.
  • 6 0
@LucWicklund: and look at the used market. Since they are such simple bikes they tend to just work forever and you can find great deals! spend the 400 bucks to get a great used one and it will treat you well fro a long time to come!
  • 8 0
I suck at Dj, I can't even manual properly. But I built a Dj bike 4 years ago with laying parts and my general skills on the bike went to a complete new level! If you have a few berms or a 4x/bmx track nearby these bikes will completely smash your understanding of "cornering". It is just that crazy. Definitely worth the $$$, especially on sales or second hand. Also it runs for years before needing any attention
  • 1 0
@LucWicklund totally worth it, theyre just fun to dink around on, and are super playful and fun.
  • 2 0
@NWuntilirest: totally agree, everyone should have a DJ bike. You can build one so cheap, you never need to 'upgrade' the drive train or anything for that matter... I progressed more than I have in the last 5 years in one summer riding the DJ bike at the pump track and skateparks. When you get back onto a proper trail bike it's like you can do whatever you want. Biggest thing for me was judging speed for jumps and learned how to hit the landing even when coming in a bit hot or a bit not. Today though I got concussed over clearing a landing so I guess I need to get back on the DJ and brush up.

build a bmx or big bmx if you don't want to drop the cash for a dj. really worth it to have something to play on, at the very least.
  • 2 0
@CantClimb: It would be, if the folks selling items would just respond!
  • 4 2
When Pivot picked up Aaron Chase I figured it was more of a way to get Aaron chase to collaborate with them on producing a Carbon hardtail dirt jumper... Apparently I was way off. I guess having him as a brand ambassador was what they were looking for.
  • 9 1
yeah, make a carbon dirtjumper with 650b boost wheels and I will quit riding altogether, I swear!

 @dave-f:

Who said anything about boost? boost really only helps with bigger wheels and what not. I would assume this bike is a 26" bike since it's a dirt jumper.... And I can't see anything being wrong with producing a carbon DJ bike.

Lots of guys out there that are strictly dirt jumpers and pump track rippers, are they not allowed to have nice things too?
  • 1 0
 [duplcate, sorry]
  • 1 0
@dave-f: John Cowan made carbon dirt jumper once. It looks he went out of business pretty quick though Wink
  • 4 0
Dont forget, Chase was also the man behind the backflip testing on the Mach 6 Carbon last year!
  • 1 0
@2bigwheels: flange spacing, the concept behind boost, is actually a hot topic in the high end DJ world and has been long before boost. Ss specific hubs allow for a wider flange spacing and more equal dishing/spoke length building a laterally stronger wheel in both directions. Your cassette wheels have less angle and length on the drive side spokes always making your spoke tension uneven.

P.s if there's any bike where wheel strength matters it's your DJ. How many people do you see trying to 360 their endurbro bikes? That being said, please keep DJ bikes 135 and start making straight steer forks again if you're going to run integrated headsets. Damn you pike DJ!
  • 6 1
man i wish i had a basement like that...
  • 4 2
Had a couple of DJ bikes, fun and as they say above can be used in all weathers. Trouble is my knee can't deal with the impacts and flat landings :-(

Luckily with 8 inches of plus travel my knee can just about deal with it.
  • 2 1
Captain please help me... Why do DJ bikes need advanced forks with all the bells and whistles?... Surely taking the impact of landing is the goal here?... Excuse my ignorance... Wouldn't a simpler fork result in a lighter one, better suited for more air time?
