It was a tough season for Ace, but with determination and perseverance he fought his way through a list of injuries, any one of which would debilitate most normal human beings. Through it all Ace managed to ride in several Fest Series events, keep his riding commitments and film this section. Unfortunately, during the shooting of this section one of his major injuries occurred, splitting his knee wide open and nearly crippling him. Ace pushed back and managed to rehab his leg enough to ride just in time to finish his Lone Wolf Productions section before the snow began to fly. Dealing with injury is part of the sport we all love, but the way Ace was able to continually get up time after time truly makes him an animal.

Sending it in Kamloops

bigquotesTo be honest, the 2014 season was probably the roughest year of my life. A concussion, torn AC joint and rotator cuff in March, broken back in May, and to top it off the massive laceration to my left knee in August which I am still recovering from. It was really hard to get back on the bike after that one happened so late in the year and push through it in a scramble to try to finish this video. Brooks was good at dealing with me and helped me push through it and keep riding, as well as helping me when the injury when it happened. So shout outs to that dude. I'm on it super hard at the moment getting my body ready to take some punishment next season and I'm feelin good!

I would also like to say that this is my last section riding for Commencal and would like to thank them for the years of support!

 nice tld 5450 review!

Exactly what I thought... Comfort vs. risk I guess...

I bought these out of necessity as I was out riding in an unfamiliar trail system and had forgotten my knee pads and was riding solo... They were the only ones available at the local LBS and I figured better something than nothing... After trying them on and getting to the trail head I had my reservations because I feared the exact same injury seen in this vid would be the likely outcome of a crash with these pads. Luckily I didn't crash... that said, it was the first and last time I wore them.

 1:22... is f*cking HELL...

Guys, which knee/shin guards are not slip down during pedaling?
  • 5 0
Yeah before I got to the gore section , I was casualy thinking... Ive got those knee pads, seem really low on is leg and not really covering his knee cap... then I puked in my mouth....

I ordered the TLD knee pads online and sent them back the second i tried them on. Was very clear anything but a direct blow the padding would just move out of the way. Thinking about ordering some POC stuff, maybe that'll be better
  • 1 2
How ever about that cheap stuff on ebay like this ?
www.ebay.com/itm/KTM-youth-knee-shin-and-elbow-guards-/231442208650?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35e307d78a

Anyone tried them ?
Seems made not crapy.

Thinking on idea to sew-down some not expensive shin pads to stretch pants/jeans. Put on the pants and than fix the pads with it's strips with velcro...
The pads should hold in place much more that way.

troy lee 5450s are fricking great knee protectors. I have them since 3 years, had some big crashes, and they kept my knees in a good shape. Not a single bruise. Comfort and quality is top notch too.

FOX makes some great knee pads. I have some POC DH knee pads with the plastic knee cup and half shin protection. they're pricey and big but they don't move and i can do 3hr XC rides in pisgah with them.

Even the best shin guards that don't slip may not possibly save your shin from injury. This is what happened to me with TLD Lopes guards on...the top of my adjuster knob on my fork got under my shin guard after an attempted ditch of my bike coming up short on a big gap jump...Warning: pretty gruesome, view at your own discretion.

@BullseyeXer try the Trickx knee pads, they are absolutley amazing, i use them for trail riding and for my downhill comps! they are super comfy and do not rub at all. defo a good buy!

To settle this little knee guard thing, I clipped a tree going around 70/kmh while in the air and my bike pulled my pads off before I hit the ground. Ive switched to the raceface pads and they are by far the best pads Ive ever owned.

Scott Granades stays in place very well. Not sure how they can handle sharp rock impact, but they seems very solid for a soft pads. Comfort is just amazing.
  • 1 0
@yellowpurple and then there's the syringes to check if it's ruptured. Pain meds can numb the cleaning but that feeling of your knee about to explode...priceless. That scene was all too familiar for me Wink

I miss the old ROACH knee shins... not the perforated foam ones, the old molded foam ones. a modern, lightweight version of those would rule. The RF ones just aren't the same.

This is why I keep a bottle of super glue in my whip at all times.

I have the TLD pads. They seem to work fine but they're not designed to be all out protection, more of a compromise between that and comfort. Unless that guy has midget legs, it looked like he was wearing them way too far down his leg so its not that surprising they didn't protect him that well. From looking at reviews before i bought them, a fair few said you needed to wear them slightly higher than you'd expect anyway for them to be most comfortable which i'd agree with. Only ever fallen on mine once but they didn't move at all.

  • 6 3
 PROPS for the song
  • 12 2
When I see a Commencal, Knolly and Chromag videos I know it's gonna be sick. These companies never disappoints with their videos. RATM is the highest level of MTB soundtrack. Freeride is not dead. I can't be more stoked about a bike video.

Big wheelers have missed an opportunity to say something like 'coz they have to now'.

Race face has by far made the best knee pads I've worn yet. Comfy, saved me from crashes on big gaps, and I don't have to take my shoes off to put them on. And it takes some balls to use RATM for a soundtrack, but Ace's riding backed it up. We'll done!

Injuries suck! I shuttled one time only to realize I didn't have my knee pads with me. Figured meh no worries, until..... I flew over the bars into the shale where I ripped the side of my knee open. Thankfully there was a full crew out and even a person who works in the medical field with a kit who put me back together again until I made her to the hospital. I never leave without checking that I have all my gear with me now. Unfortunately this year I also broke my wrist. Hey it just comes with the territory. I still love riding.

The knee wound makes me happy to have hard shell knee pads
  • 2 0
My TLD pads did the same this summer. Moved down and ripped open completely. Pads were shot and my knee was trashed. Went to IXS and never looked back.

That Knee looks nasty ! Dont forget the Kneepads Kids
  • 2 0
Everyone listen to what this man says! Wish I had worn some good pads when I broke my kneecap into 5 pieces and damaged the joint, now I always wear some good kneepads.

  • 3 0
doubt that was alcohol. probably just irrigating it.
