Catching Up With Adam Hauck

Adam Hauck is a name synonymous with pushing the envelope of 26" freestyle riding. Whether it's street riding, skate parks, or dirt jumps Hauck lets his creativity flow and it shows. We recently caught up with the 24-year-old New Jersey based rider and here's what he had to say:

What are some of your earliest memories on a bicycle?

Well, thinking back to last Thursday, I had to wake up at 5:30 am to meet up with Aaron Chase to go ride FDR.

Can you give us an idea of how you got involved in riding mountain bikes?  

I grew up riding BMX and there was a small mountain bike scene that was going on around me. My good friend Wayne hooked me up with a mountain bike and a bunch of parts - if it wasn't for him who knows where I would have wound up.

At what point did you realize mountain biking could be more than just a hobby?

It's everyone's dream to do what you love for a living, I just started getting some offers where I could work less and less and work harder and more on riding. It's a dream come true, but I'm always trying to set bigger and bigger goals.

When you are out riding what is your favorite type of terrain and why?  

The mountain bike is to me is an all-terrain bike. I love the fact that I can roll out my door and be able to ride whatever I feel like that day. I live in an area where I can be in the heart of NYC, at the beach, or in the woods in about 20 minutes. This give me all types of terrain to ride so my favorite terrain is greedy - I love them all and what they have to offer.

You are based in New Jersey - what do you like about the area?

Other than being 20 minutes from everything I love the food. Where I live it's a melting pot of cultures. We have the best variety of food and people from that culture make it, except the tacos are not that awesome. Along with the food, I've grown accustomed to people being hostile and verbal to each other. It sounds crazy, but I'm into it.


Let’s say someone from another part of the world has the chance to spend one week riding on the East Coast and they’ve come to you for advice. Where and how should they spend that week?

On the East Coast there's only one spot where you can enjoy the best all around riding and that's Highland Mountain Bike park. That place is the BEST and hands down is a must to go check out.
 
What is your favorite place to ride in North America?

My favorite spots are spots that to the normal person look like garbage; weird architecture, sculpted dirt, piles of wood and any thing else that crosses my path.

Seems like you’ve had some bad luck with injuries the past few seasons, what do you do to get through them and get back on your bike quickly?

I usually sit home for a few days denying anything is wrong. Then I finally go to the doctor, which gets you surgery and physical therapy. That takes away a huge part of your life! When I'm sitting around hurt all I can think about is getting back on my bike. When I'm not riding I feel such a huge void.

Are there any new tricks you are working on and do you get worried about re-injuring yourself when trying things out of your comfort zone?

Getting hurt is a part of the game. If you don't think you're going to fall down you're in the wrong sport. You cannot accept failure, you got to keep on keepin' on.
 
Do you have any tips for up and coming riders on how to keep pushing their riding to the next level?

Most important is to have fun! If it's not fun it's not worth doing. Also, bike control is huge.

Outside of riding, what do you really enjoy doing and how does it fit in with your riding??

I'm very hands on. I have a project VW Golf, and I spend time building and fixing things around the house. This translates into my bike world with weird ideas how to build ramps, jumps, weird setups.

Any big plans for 2014, upcoming videos or contests?  

I'm going to make it to some contests in the States, and I plan on putting out some amazing web edits that that world will not see coming!

 Shame he's not riding for Black Market anymore.

 Why the f*ck was I negative propped? It is a shame he's not with Black Market anymore. He had a sick custom Edit 1 in a signature color, and Black Market is an awesome company who needed a strong street rider.

 Well he's moved on from black market, and is progressing in the sport... In my opinion, it's incredible when riders do their job with one company, and move onto bigger companies to do the same. There shouldn't be any shame or sad feelings when a rider retires from a company.

 I wouldn't call Deity a bigger company than Black Market. They have more employees, but Black Market still makes more frames and products than Deity.
