I am so excited to click these links and win nothing for the next 24 days. I am more excited to read the whiney comments when the prizes are less exciting.

 Exactly my point!

Thank you so much Pinkbike, this is awesome!

You sell out! Is it a coincidence that you write so much stuff on this site whining on everything you see, and now you are suddenly positive? I don't think so! SRAM and Pinkbike are paying you to be positive about it.

COMMENTOMERCIAL!

Until the cranks explode and take half your bike with them
  • 5 8
Cage in the rear mech is carbon too. Which means that unlike all Shimanos, save XTR, it does not bend in a virtually non-repairable manner after a small hit. It also means that there are thousands of dentists riding around on man-powered vehicles equipped with explosives - NSA should be on that case like sht on velcro!
  • 15 1
How a holiday contest to give away free stuff can degrade into an anti-carbon rant I don't know, but ... Merry Christmas!
- current happy RF sixc owner, but (apparently) just waiting for the inevitable implosion.
  • 2 3
RF SixC is a very different thing to SramXO. I run SixC cranks and have smashed them into more rocks than I care to remember. So far, so good (touch wood)

Saying that, I was a big fan of carbon till a mate of mine snapped a set of bars that were brand new from a shop little more than 12 hours before, in a tiny little crash. Warranty replacement? Not a chance. Crash damage innit? I offered to show them a video of the crash, which was literally more like just getting off the bike, then it falling over quite gently. They declined the offer...

I'll run the sixc's until I cant any more, but I doubt I'll be buying much more carbon after that.
  • 1 0
The real problem with the carbon cranks is that they are STILL heavier than the metal XTR cranks. That's what gets me. Whats the point of carbon if you aren't saving any weight? You know you certainly aren't saving any MONEY.
  • 2 0
They are stiffer. And stronger. Far stronger. Until they have the slightest defect, at which point they're trash.
  • 1 0
Well, the advantage of carbon has never been the weight savings, per se. It's that you have greater control over the build-up so you can use more material where you need it and less where you don't. With steel/ ali they're essentially trying to do the same through varying the thickness, or reinforcing yokes, etc. The stiffness vs. flex comes from the layout of how the "grain of the material" is oriented. With carbon it's explicit while metals rely on treatment during manufacture at the molecular level where you don't have as much control. That's why a superficial carbon crack or tear may not lead to failure, but the same crack in aluminium is only getting bigger. So with cranks I'd *suspect* the choice is add stiffness and strength vs. make them lighter. Man, I wish more parts manufacture chose strength over weight...
  • 1 0
Yet you don't hear stories of the "less stiff" aluminum cranks exploding, despite the fact that there are probably 100 aluminum cranksets out in the wild for every 1 carbon crankset.
  • 1 1
XTR cranks are more expensive than most carbon ones out there. I bought my XX1s because of the good price for a crankset that takes a spiderless (great looking) chainring. I bought them as used. They are aging in a terrible manner, scratched aluminium in aluminium color (no ano pish) will always look better than peeling off carbon. Crank shoes are increasing their life. I am waiting for a sick carbon frame (that will look like made of carbon, not from plastic with cheap matte finish covering poor layup) now but I will put trusted SLX cranks (65g heavier than XX1) on it as well as alu rims. I will get sweet and trusted carbon bars maybe.
  • 1 1
Merry Carbonismass! Is it just my scope of interest or Black Friday really sucked this year?
  • 46 1
i hope they give away that adjustable dropper stem!
  • 15 0
That would be sweet. Maybe they will give away two and we can both get one.
  • 20 0
I can make you one. I have some extra wood and screws left over from my last build.
  • 10 0
mohogany please. it takes stain very nicely.

Forget any other news, it's all about the advent prizes on PB

The advert prizes on PB. That being said, I could really use that groupo, building up a new frame at the moment and it would run way sweeter with an 11 speed groupo.
