A few days ago Mr. Kinrade was doing some shooting up in Kamloops on a hip step down that he'd built. Picture dropping about 30 feet, while having to hip over about 12 feet.

Mike got a little zesty and transfered over a few feet to far and got tangled in the bushes. The result is a broken collar bone and a strong will to return to stomp it now!

The skies have cleared and the trail crew is super busy buffing and building bike trails. Kicking Horse is opening this weekend with 2 for 1 biking on Friday, June 29th. There is still snow in the Alpine, but most lower mountain trails will be open.

I had plans to meet up with Chuck and Brent to chat about the plans for the 07 mountain bike season but really what I wanted to do was shred the trails before everybody else. So it was pretty easy to find some partners in crime, I called up Ferg & Kyle and of course Johnny who had just got a new camera that day and was eager to try it out.

This past weekend at Mont Sainte Anne, e.thirteen rider Sam Hill captured the win and the leaders jersey in the points race for the world title, while on the other side of the world, e.thirteen rider Paul Basagoitia collected 25,000 euros for his second place overall finish in the Qashqai Urban Challenge series.

Volunteers come from all over the world to take part

Kokanee Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival organizers are looking for upwards of 200 volunteers to participate in this year’s festival from July 21-29. Volunteers can do a variety of jobs and get involved in several aspects of the competition. The resort of Châtel is working hard and carefully on the site of Plaine-Dranse, and specially on the hill side where the international mountain-biking event in freestyle and slopestyle disciplines in the same run will take place from 5 to 8 July 2007…

As the Silver Star Bike Park opened for another successful season, top pros and local riders took to the trails, especially Double Dog, site of the Red Bull Trailbuilding Challenge. This unique competition put the spot light on the hard working trail builders from around the Okanagan who toil tirelessly creating new stunts and features and restoring the trails for everyone to enjoy.

There is a time when a cameraman really has to get down and dirty, rain, mud, opening shoots, and especially dusty trails! Here is what you do, wrap the camera in a big plastic bag, tape all the openings shut, put a clear filter over your expensive lens and get in the mix. More on that later, but let's talk about Kirt Voreis and his Bend Oregon setup.

After the dust has settled from Crankworx Colorado, come join the Jump Jam at the Fix Bike shop, Sunday July 8th. Barbeque, music, and beautiful jumps will be waiting for you to shred all day. There's a pump track, mulch jump and dirt jump lines ranging from beginner through pro size.

On Friday night, while competiing at the first stop of the Dew Tour dirt jump finals, Stephen Murray bailed out of a double backflip attempt. According to other riders, he only made it 1 1/2 rotations before he jumping out of it and landing on his head, breaking his neck and stopped breathing. He was revived and rushed to the local ER. Stephen had crushed his 3rd, 4th and 5th vertebrae and was paralyzed from the neck down. Since then, he has ungone the first surgery of what could quite possibly be many in an attempt to give him some sort of a normal life. After the first 7 hour surgery Stephen surprised his friends and family by shrugging his shoulders and having some sensation on his upper left side of his body.

The Syndicate made a great showing at the Nissan UCI World Cup Downhill race today at Mt. Ste. Anne, Quebec, Canada, with Steve Peat placing 3rd and Nathan Rennie in 6th. These two riders held the 1st and 3rd place race split times at 2:11.48 for Peat and 2:12.20 for Rennie (Hill 2nd fastest split at 2:11.4,. But the race didn’t end halfway down the course, so on the bottom half of the track they made some mistakes. Sam Hill takes the win; Greg Minnaar comes second even when his trick shoulder popped out on the way down the track.

TORONTO: After 11 grueling days of cycling over 5,000 km from Oceanside, California to Atlantic City, New Jersey, on barely 23 hours of sleep, Toronto resident and endurance cyclist, Peter Oyler, can finally enjoy a full night of rest knowing that he’s successfully completed the world’s most difficult endurance race, the Race Across America (RAAM).

This year's Bear Mountain Challenge will be the first time in 10 years that another group will be taking the reigns from Cory and his great crew that has made it that biggest mountain bike racing event in the lower main land. The Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association has stepped up to the task and you can all expect to see the same great service that you've come to love at the Bear Mountain event. Here's what the weekend will look like:

Brodie b Team pro Joanna Petterson got an early season invite to represent her native South African Cycling Federation at the World Championships in Scotland later this summer. A resident of Hawaii, the South African born rider does most of her racing in North America, where she’s the reigning NORBA 4X champion.

The Hollywood premiere of Billy Savage’s film, KLUNKERZ, will take place on Saturday afternoon, June 30th at the Vine Theater during The Bicycle Film Festival. The theater is located at 6321 Hollywood Blvd. just west Vine Street.

In the film KLUNKERZ Billy Savage examines the genesis of the sport of mountain biking, tracing its origins to a small group of friends in Northern California’s Marin County in the late 1960s and 1970s. The film includes interviews with many of the sports pioneers and some of the more obscure characters that influenced them.

Designed in Andora, Commencal is a company that is known for building bikes that win races. Max Commencal has always had the fastest racers on his crews and now that he is running his own ship at Commencal bikes, things are getting quicker and the podiums are stacking up. With the likes of Anne Caro, Cedric the Entertainer and the Atherton Dynasty to name a few of their big hitters, 2007 is proving to be a great year for the small Andoran bike company. Rolled out of bed to cloudy skies, but no rain-SWEET! Gear up and get out there-it's opening day! Lots of folks had the same idea-hitting lift access trails in the Interior is on for the season, so let's get our skid on!

I ran into a bunch of folks from all over right of the bat and ended up finding my way into the mix with the fine folks from Team Billy. Ted Dude aka Huge, 90's Drew, Bennet-tech, Penny, Pink Helmet and Blue Helmet were flying the pirate flag and pinning trails. Time to follow in suit.

One of the largest crowds of the event series gathered in La Villette for the series finale. Darren Berrecloth and Paul Basagoitia were locked in a tight battle for first place, and the Paris results would decide once and for all who would be the overall Qashqai champion.

After four amazing stops of the Qashqai Urban Challenge in Newcastle, Milan, Madrid and Cologne, riders will be reconvening after a four week break for the final stop of the series on June 22nd and 23rd in Paris. The world’s best riders will be rested and ready to throw down their best riding in a final attempt to take home the big overall prize money that is waiting for the top five athletes.

I loaded up the 4Runner 14 hours ago in the pouring rain of the lower main land and headed northeast with my fingers crossed for dryer climates. After a quick stop for eats and gas in Kamloops I was back inline for the end destination-Silver Star Resort in Vernon BC. The weather in Vernon is leaps and bounds better than the gross drizzle back in the 'wack, now hopefully it keeps up all weekend.

The idea for today was to hike and shoot some pics of the new trail work done to Double Dog as part of the Red Bull Trail Crew Challenge. I rolled up at about 2:30 and was told that I could actually grab my bike and hit the lift instead of hiking-hell ya that's a bonus to my day! The tires hit the track at the UCI World Cup in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec for the first downhill practice session of the event.

A little summary of what has been going on at KBC so far this year. The demand for riding at KBC became so great that we hired a cat over the Easter long weekend to clear the road to get to the top!!! That’s what we call listening to the customer… KBC style. Over the winter lots of sleds and quads were nice enough to pack down the road so the snow had to go. The trails are in great shape and it was so nice to get the season started. This is the earliest we have ever started and we are already well on our way to shattering last year’s record rider numbers. We have groups just about every weekend since the beginning of April.

All of the proceeds are going to be given to the Kamloops Mountain Bike Association and the Sun Peaks Health Association. What two better groups would you want your money to go to? The trail builders who have been responsible for some of the sickest single track in BC’s Interior, and the doctors who are going to patch you up when you case it on your bike. The lift starts turning at 10:00am this Saturday, so make sure you don’t have a late one on Friday night.

Shimano presents a new XTR rear derailleur RD-M972, developed with the revolutionary “Shadow” technology that was introduced recently in the new Deore XT group. “Shadow” realizes an extra thin profile to minimize the chance of getting hit by a rock. A tree trunk. Or whatever else lies waiting on the trail.

The Shadow derailleur is 11-18 mm smaller than a conventional derailleur and it has a much thinner profile than any other rear derailleur in the market.

Everyone that knows me, knows that I can't ride street or dirt jump to save my life. With that in mind I decided that I wanted to build some new skills that would help me out on the trails. This spring I set out to build up a little hard tail on a budget as I can't justify spending the money on a bike that will be so terrain specific. A DH or freeride rig, dumping cash is justifiable, but this bike would come to existence through low budget means.

Kokanee Crankworx presents WomenzWorx, the first event of its kind in North America with two days of freeride mountain bike clinics and competitions for women only. The event kicks off Monday, July 23 in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

Endless Biking is taking the bus to Red Bull Elevation and they want you to join them! In 2005 Red Bull revolutionized dirt jump competitions with Red Bull Elevation. 2007 will be the third year for the Whistler-based event and Endless Biking wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to witness the insanity. On July 1st Endless Biking will be loading a bus full of young rippers and heading to Whistler for a day full of the world’s best BMX riders attempting to win the world’s best BMX competition!

Living in small town Yukon, there isn’t much of an option for a person to choose their mountainbiking discipline. There are a lot of XC/AM trails, and 2 good DH runs (more than 2 minutes long), in Whitehorse. In the small town of Teslin, there really is nothing but quad trails and highway. So, Justin and I planned our 2nd annual road trip to Whistler. We loaded up my truck with 2 Cove Shockers, 2 tickle trunks full of armor, spare parts, tools, lube and Anti-Monkey Butt powder for Justin. Also loaded up was tonnes of tunes and a cooler that plugged into the power outlet of my truck. Ready to Rock? You bet!

Recreational Trails on Cypress are Changing

West Vancouver is planning development at the base of Cypress that impacts existing trails including Sex Boy and Family Guy. This is being done before a long term plan for recreational trails on Cypress is defined. No mitigation has been planned to handle displaced traffic.

Mysticfreeride and Spiagames present the second edition of Townhill: Bergamo 2007, which it will take place on 7/8 July in the heart of Bergamo, inside the ancient Venetian walls.

Even if the content will not change compared last year, with a Urban Downhill Contest and MTB Dirt Contest, the second edition will have many news features.

On June 23, Silver Star Mountain Resort kicks off its mountain biking season with the most unique trail building concept in North America. As the final snow melts off the runs, the Red Bull Trail Building Challenge is already under way. Three teams, each consisting of ten riders and trail builders, have been assigned sections of Silver Star's Double Dog trail. In the three weekends prior to Silver Star Bike Park's official opening on June 23, these teams will be building wooden features that will enhance the rideability and flow of the trail. Skinnies, teeters, wall rides – it's all up to each team to use their imagination (and building materials) to create the best features.

With the rain dumping down at Sun Peaks during the last week the only people more excited than our local fire department has to be the Sun Peaks Bike Park Trail Crew. It is almost like Mother Nature has seen the level of hard work the Trail Crew has been doing, and has decided to pitch in, and help pack down the new flowing lines in the Bike Park with some much needed rain fall.

This past weekend, Champery, Switzerland was the site of one of the most technical downhill race courses ever created. In a finish that will be talked about for years, e.thirteen rider Sam Hill battled tremendous odds to capture 3rd place and missed 2nd place by a mere 0.03 seconds in conditions that many riders termed unrideable. Just one day earlier, Jill Kintner took top spot in the womens 4X and took a big step toward earning a World Cup overall title.

So that is how my co-pilot for last weekend's road trip began her discussion with the border guard that asked her where she was going to in Canada. Tisk tisk, well I guess it's gonna be a long trip was my thought as soon as I heard that. Since Leana couldn't remember the name, its Kamloops and last weekend was their first BC Cup at the Kamloops Bike Ranch. 200 racers showed up for the DH event. Here's the tale of how things went last weekend.

This Sunday, June 17th marks the second of three Calgary Cycle DH Championship races. If you are only planning on one or two of the series races then you can purchase a day license each time. To compete in all three races you'll need a full ABA DH License which you can get from the ABA.

Its a new year and after 2 seasons on my last steed I am lucky enough to be able to build up my new ride for the '07 season. While today's off the shelf rigs can offer an amazing value for what you pay, I wanted to build something unique that stands out a bit. What I ended up with is a 36.3 lbs coil sprung DH bike that you won't see anywhere else.

It was hot, it was so very hot. Riders holding on, trying to keep their heads up, trying to fight off the draining heat of the day. They kept pushing, run after run, giving everything they had to show their own expression of mountain biking.

The knowledgeable and innovative guys down at DiamondBack HQ have been real busy working with Nicolai and his new GearBox II system. Is this the best looking gear box bike there is? Probably..

Once you get north of Campbell River, you just never know what you are in for. We rolled into Port Alice at around 10 p.m. on Friday night to find our buddies Ferg and Kyle setting up camp right at the bottom of the downhill course. It was just getting dark and the rain clouds had settled in for the weekend. Kyle and Ferg decided that it was time to start a fire the good ol' fashioned way, with a can of gas.

How can you argue with 28 degrees, a light wind and a brand new DH course. Canada’s largest DH and 4X race series came back to Kelso June 10th with a vengeance and posted the 3rd largest DH attendance in Ontario history, I want to thank all the participants and parents for making this happen. We also had our first “Women Race for free” event and we doubled our numbers from last race so it was a great improvement.

Second World Cup last weekend, this time in Champery, Switzerland. We hoped for sunshine after the pouring days in Caldirola, but it wasn't enough. Heavy rains throughout the weekend made the courses slippery and the results uncertain

The 2nd round of the Nissan sponsored World Cup arrived in a new resort this weekend-Champery. They were greeted by beautiful scenery being surrounded by the Alps climbing steeply all around the pits. The main talk though was of the track- newly built for this race it was one of the most technical tracks to be seen in a long time- This was a very tough assault for the riders and many of the riders could not get down it without numerous crashes in practice. To see the likes of Steve Peat, Gee Atherton and Nicolas Vouilloz opting for flat pedals instead of their usual SPDs was testament to the style and difficulty of the track.

Round two of the 2007 UCI Downhill World Cup schedule was contested this past weekend at Champery Ski Resort, located in the spectacular Portes de Soleil region of Switzerland. With its’ steep mountains, ever changing weather, and a course the likes of which the World Cup has not seen in years, the venue helped contribute to a drama filled weekend that kept fans worldwide on the edge of their seats.

US Open Scene Report:

Being a little tired of racing the same old Tremblant Canada Cup downhill course for the last 7 years some of us at Primary/Daredevil Racing decided to switch things up and head to the US Open at the Diablo Freeride Park in Vernon, New Jersey.

What a choice we made.

Panorama Mountain Village , B.C. – The Mad Trapper Mountain Bike Downhill returns to Panorama on June the 24th and this year's event will be faster than ever thanks to a new race trail.

My visit to Peterborough Ontario was such an amazing experience. I met up with the the Cops for Cancer, Pedal for Hope crew, they were my hosts for the first few days of the visit. The police officers raised $140,000 for cancer research on their 3 week tour, where they visited 50 schools by bike.

Roadtripping the Qashqai Urban Challenge Tour for the last four weeks has been an unreal experience. I've seen amazing competition, been faced with some of the most difficult situations of my life and found a deeper understanding and respect for the top riders of our sport. Here's my attempt to sum up each rider into a single word.

No one had a better time at the Out of Bounds weekend than Jamie Goldman, who took home first place in the bunnyhop contest and the 26TRIX! The racers are probably glad that he didn’t have time to enter the Top 2 Bottom Terminator!

Sunday June 10, 2007-Champery, Switzerland

The second downhill round of the UCI World Cup Series was held in the quaint Swiss mountain village in Champery, Switzerland today, where it rains every afternoon. Too many stories to tell here, but Matti Lehikoinen takes the win, Steve Peat (Santa Cruz Syndicate), is second and now leads the World Cup Overall, and Sam Hill comes third with a history making run, gaining the awe and admiration of all, and showing just what this World Champion is made of. Here’s how the week went.

This week, Dave Weagle, the creator of the World Champion and internationally acclaimed dw-link suspension introduces a new system to the cycling world. The new system is called SPLIT PIVOT and features worldwide patent pending concentric dropout pivot technology never seen before. A web site dedicated to the system, www.split-pivot.com, was launched earlier in May 2007.

Back in February I had to come up with a racing program that would be both inexpensive and have some high level racing. I am kind of sick of the hurting NORBA scene and I have done the Canada Cups so many times that I needed to do something different, but what? Well my buddy Marty Lazarski came to me and proposed a trip to Poland. We would do 4 races, 2 UCI C1's and 2-C 2's. We would live out of Marty's Grandfathers house just outside of Krakow and would drive his little Civic to the races on the weekend. I said “yeah lets do it”. So I booked my flight and was on my way.

The North Shore Credit Union Test of Metal treasurer Stewart Kerr announced that the 2006 race set a new record amount of over $12,500 of donations to community groups.

“Each year the total that we have given away has increased,” Kerr said, “and we're very proud of our contributions to the community.”

Last week all the boys in North Van put on another awesome North Shore Ripper. It was the first one that I attended and was super stoked at the turn out, the fun times, and just being in the company of people that truly love this sport. Rumble Mountain Rage Cross-Country June 9, 2007 12:00pm Start.

This is the event that started it all. Back in 1994 it was an 80 km mountain bike race on surrounding logging roads. These days, racers want single track trails and Port Alice delivers. The incredibly fast and fun ‘Rager's Rush’ trail is the reward for the grueling climb up the side of Rumble Mountain. On this 3.5 km course racers are either hammering uphill or blasting downhill, no flat sections here.

The first year of the Wheels of Speed World Downhill Challenge wrapped up successfully, alongside the tenth year of the SYMPATEX-BIKE Festival. Crowds of people were wandering through the tents in the expo area and cheering on their favorite riders during Sunday’s downhill race.

Just last week I was invited to enjoy the epic riding in Sedona, Arizona. The only thing better than leaving the wet spring weather behind was that the reason I was spending 3 days in such a beautiful place was to get some early rides in on the 2008 Magura brakes and forks.

Today the world’s best downhillers congregated at the top of the famous Willingen track, ready to race towards a prize purse of 30,000 euros. Amateurs also pinned it down the mountain, hoping for a chance to compete with the big names of downhill in tomorrow’s final.

Dodge City DH is this weekend, Sunday June 3, in Cumberland. This race has been running strong since 2001. Dan Espeseth, owner of Dodge City Cycle puts on a stellar event every year with a buffed up course that rewards smooth riders. The top section is full of flow and jumps while the bottom half demands strenth and some luck to ride clean.

Round four of the NORBA Mountain Bike Series took place over the Memorial Day weekend in conjunction with the Mountain State Cup (MSC) “Chile Challenge” at the scenic ski resort of Angel Fire, a short two hour drive north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This resort was the host of the 2005 UCI World Cup and the mountain is viewed by many as the premier North American venue for gravity mountain bike racing.
