About the Enduro World Series

The Enduro World Series was created in October 2012 with the aim of uniting the world's mountain bike enduro racing community. The Enduro World Series links the largest mountain bike enduro events in the world with the best trails possible and exists to deliver the best racing, most relaxed atmosphere and rider-focused organization possible. The team behind the Enduro World Series has one goal - to globally develop and progress the discipline of enduro for the riders, the sport and the industry. With the shared experience of Italian Super Enduro, French Enduro Series, Crankworx and World Cup racing, the Enduro World Series will offer international competitions unlike any before it.

The Enduro Mountain Bike Association’s (EMBA) Board of Directors (Chris Ball, Darren Kinnaird, Fred Glo and Enrico Guala) is supported by an industry Advisory Board, to reflect and respond to the riding community, that includes Santa Cruz Bicycles’ Rob Roskopp, SRAM’s Jeremiah Boobar, Fox Shox’ Mark Fitzsimmons and riders Tracy Moseley, Jerome Clementz and Curtis Keene.

How ‘Ask Us Anything' Works:

Starting at 8:30 AM PST on April 2nd you can type your questions into the comment box following this article and EWS's Chris Ball will take his best shot at it. Sometimes, your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a while, as the guys from the EWS will be busy responding to the flood of questions.  We've seen a handful of full time top World Cup downhillers come out to select EWS events and, while not doing terribly, also not exactly cleaning like some fans might expect. People also forget that many of these top EWS riders once raced WC downhill as well... but what are some of the attributes that set a top EWS racer apart from a top WC downhiller?

 "Enrico-" Punta Ala EWS#1 proved that Enduro is a sport. It's not enough to be a fast driller. There is much more that goes into a top Enduro athlete, I think race strategy, being fast but preserving energy and the bike as well, is one of the most important quality a top enduro need to have. Versatility, adapting to the different terrain and format, is the other characteristic you need to have to be able to win an EWS.

 The entry point for potential EWS sponsors is very reasonable, some might say too low for such a world class series - what’s the rationale behind this? Inclusion? Keeping the grassroots element alive and well?

 We doubled the fees across the board for this year. And as the sport grows and we prove the model, we'll continue to work with our supporters to agree the right level of charge. Also, as inclusion is key, we want to make sure as many people as possible are on board from the start. And then see us as a good investment, rather than just a marketing outlet. That, we hope, will provide the most sustainable base for the sport in years to come.

 which is exactly why you oowwwwnn the UCI (or, just as bad, the IOC) and their understanding of how to develop a sport...

I hope we have some years ahead where we have a decent sport, that is not yet entirely destroyed by $$$

 The DH World Cup series has been our "Formula 1" of sorts for many, many years, with the most exotic bikes being found there and the limits being pushed more than in out segments of our sport. I see that changing a bit in the future as the bikes raced in the EWS become more and more advanced, as well as having to deal with everything from climbs to pretty much WC level descending.

With that in mind, is there a technology on the horizon that you see really allowing the riders to go faster than they are right now?

 I think efficiency will be the big buzz word as bikes get faster, lighter and more adjustable on the trail. Enduro has come about due to the advancements in the industry giving us these amazing bikes and I see the development of the sport totally aligning with what these amazing engineers develop for us in the future.

 With the majority of TV channel execs cautious to televise the more extreme end of mountain biking (freeride, downhill), do you see the EWS as being more 'accessible' and therefore being the thing that could finally bring mountain biking to TV screens in future?

 "Enrico-" Enduro is the most difficult MTB discipline to be televised because of the nature of the sport. If we can find a good format I'm sure we can get more people into mountain biking because of the ease of access as well as the excitement on the stages. It already happened for one of the National TV in Italy and the amount of people that have started asking about it was incredible.

 From the look of your Instagram feed it looks like you are always on the look out for new race sites. What do you look for in a EWS venue?

 It's not as easy as you'd think. Great trails, that provide enough race time to make a good race, with reasonable climbs and are close enough to link together in a single day. The stages themselves also need to be physical and technical, fun at a normal riding speed but not too brutal when raced. It's more specific than you might think.

 I'd encourage you guys to look at Lake Tahoe if you're interested in a CA race. Tons of potential there to link up great trails with long but doable climbs. Happy to put you in touch with the right people if there's interest.

 Is there any concern on you part about an UCI enduro series, and where do you think the teams and riders' allegiances would fall if that were to happen?

 No concerns. I flew to meet the new UCI president in February and we are all on the same page. We are being left to do our own thing for now with no conflict. I don't want the riders to become pawns in a game, hence why it was important to speak with the UCI directly.

 Would the EWS series ever considering franchising into some smaller national series, so that local race promoters can have races without timing SNAFUs? The EWS races are always so well organized, it'd be really cool if you could pass that along and help grow the sport! EWS rocks!

 "Enrico-" hey thanks Jeff! Franchising is probably not going to happen but for sure we are talking to a lot of organizers around the globe to share ideas, best practice, experiences to make endure a more enjoyable sport everywhere. Timing is of course an issue and it's very much related to the system used. As a Belgium organizer told me one day: "Enduro is the most difficult format to organize". We'll get there like it has been for the other MTB disciplines.

 I'm very impressed with the communication between riders and the EWS Organization so far this year. You guys take great pride in making the experience great for the participant. How many people including yourself are apart of the EWS "Team", and what has the day to day workload been like to get to this point? Thanks!

 "Enrico-" Thanks Brian. EMBA founders are all sport people and have been riders and coming from the roots of the sport. We considered rider communication and feedback as a fundamental priority to grow the sport. Chris is definitely putting a lot of time and energy following all the different topics and fortunately we are getting a really good support and feedback from riders and industry and that is a great help. But we could not do it without a 100% commitment of all the people involved.

 back packs, I seen riders racing with no back packs. But the rule book says last year that the rider needs to carry a first aid kit, food water, tools... I race whistler last year with water, food, first aid kit... why should a carry my first aid kit if nobody else is going with the rules?
Any changes for this year in this topic?

 That section of the rules states that first aid kit etc are all strongly recommended. They are not mandatory as we can't check the contents of everyone's pack throughout the day. But, I wouldn't ride without one and we want to try and set standards and accepted practice/culture, rather than mandate through rules. Thanks for carrying all that stuff. We need more people like you!

 with the diversity of venues the format brings do you think enduro can influence the dh scene in terms of finding new locations for their series? Also, is the scouting for new trails the most fun yet most difficult part of what you do? thnx-

 Scouting for new trails is super tough. But a great job..... Really though, the biggest difference is that we are fundamentally working with organisers of enduro races, not just venues. which means that after an EWS in a certain location there is a legacy left with that organiser. And that means the organiser is passionate. Often the World Cup DH venues are ruled by local tourism, and not specific race organisers. Which means that it's easy to miss the best venues. We have a better model for the sport for sure.

 As stated already DH is the F1 of mountain biking and to some extent lends itself to television. In motor sports rallying (which shares a similar format to EWS) loses out slightly as it's harder to televise. Being that televised events is one of the key ways to grow a sport, do you have any concerns about how you could do this with EWS and do you think the lack of coverage could hold it back. Aside from all that fantastic work so far!! Thanks.

 Great question. And you're spot on. I've always seen enduro as the discipline for riders, whereas DH can and should be pushed towards TV and spectators. You need both for the sport of mtb as a whole. Yes that wll mean we may lose out on some coverage but that doesn't mean we can't have an incredible sport that suits a highlights show more than a live feed. WRC is still my favourite over F1. Always will be.

 Thanks for your reply, great to hear your thoughts. I think it's a great format for riders. Personally I feel it could be fit from a live stage, perhaps a special stage. I only say this because we are fed so many 'round up' videos and 'edits' these days, it's the live stuff that stands out. Good luck with the coming season, really looking forward to it.

 Crankworx did live webcast the final stage from the EWS in Whistler last year which was great. We'll work on that concept as we develop. But the riders and the quality of the race in enduro needs to be looked after at the same time.

 How much preparation goes into putting on a series as big as this? It seems like it came together pretty quickly at the end of 2012, but went off with relatively minor hiccups last year. I was at Winter Park the weekend of the EWS stop there and was bummed about the lifts not being at 100%. Who ultimately makes the call to do something like cancelling a stage, splitting one up, etc?

 The calls on site are ultimately made by the appointed Race Director but usually after consultation with myself and any other key people, like medics, mountain rescue, trail builders etc.

 Chris, what would your advice be to someone wanting to improve their bike handling skills for enduro? Should I be focusing on any particular areas first? Bearing in mind I consider myself a good intermediate!

 Thanks and great question. I'd say that enduro genuinely is the ultimate all round test, so really you just have to ride as much terrain as possible. Consistency is key so getting comfy on all sorts of trails is paramount. You can already see in the 2013 rankings those riders who only excel at one thing, and how that had a negative impact over the course of the year.

 I have entered the Tweedlove EWS in the E2 category. I think it's a great idea to get more "normal" folks involved. How will the E1 and E2 categories differ, i.e. will they be on the same day and course and will you be able to watch the fast guys before or after your race? I'm mega excited already...

 It is a great idea and the route we want to go. The plan with Tweedlove is to have no specific start times and one less stage per day for E2, so it's more relaxed and you have more time to get around the valley. But still race on the majority of the same terrain.

 With the growth of this discipline being so rapid I wasn't surprised when I overslept and missed my chance to register for EWS Whistler by only a few hours as it sold out. What are the current rider caps for your events and do you have plans to expand that number in the future? thanks!

 "Enrico-" vanue capacity depends a lot on the format, in particular if we use lifts or not. In a rally format such as Tweedlove or Finale Ligure you can go up to 5-600 riders having them pedaling through the stages. On lift assisted the capability of the lift itself is the limitation to greater numbers. In Whistler we can go up to 400. I doubt we could do more in future.

 Do you find it interesting that many formats Enduro events will be created from the EWS adapting to the reality of the place, even with short tracks or several short courses or believes that legislation, as well as the UCI Downhill is most needed?
Remember that many countries, such as Brazil, many proofs end up not fitting the format and rules of the UCI, but are considered valid and many great races.

 I agree. The whole idea behind keeping the format flexible is to make the most out of the riding in the local area. Only by doing that can you have the best event.

 Will today's earthquake/tsunami in Chile affect the opening round of EWS?

 Just remember to bring your flotation device for the tsunami!

The earthquake was about 2500km from chillan where the race will be held. Also there was very little damage to the buildings and just a handful of deaths (5 y think), mostly associated with heart failures during the earthquake.

 When planning the season were you aware that the dates 13 - 14 July - La Thuille, Italy conflicted with the Megavalanche 2014, and do you think it will have an effect on either race in terms of who turns up to race?

 "Enrico"- We actually set the dates knowing that the Mega is usually 1 week after to avoid any clash. Later on, Mega announced the date and there was nothing we could do at that point. Rider's attendance will depend on previous results at the EWS, if someone will not be on the top position at the EWS he/she could decide to attend the Mega.

 We'd love to. I was recently in Oslo taking about enduro and we hope to visit Scandinavia as the scene develops

 Is there a points system similar to the UCI for riders to compete in the EWS as there is for World cups? Furthermore would the series move to be under UCI regulation should the UCI take an interest in being the governing body?

 We have a reserve list based on our official team registrations and our previous year rankings. That puts the power int he hands of the teams, so if they want to have a certain rider represent them, then that's great. They shouldn't have to qualify first. After that, we open all entries to the public, and that's crucial we keep that too. I'd hate to see it locked down and out of reach of the normal bike rider.

 I have been really wanting to organize a local enduro race or series here in eastern Canada. What advice do you have for someone looking to organize a local enduro race? Also what do you think is the best way to overcome lack of elevation when planning a coarse?

 At local level, you're better to have shorter or less good stages than more and longer bad ones. Keep it fun, keep it relaxed and listen to your riders. They'll keep you right when choosing trails.

 As another taller rider at 188cm, curious to your choice of main steed moving from TallboyLT to Bronson. Do you find it to be quicker for yourself in most situations?

 I do love the big wheels and have actually got another Tallboy on the way to me for this summer. I think if I was racing myself in the EWS, I'd seriously consider a 29 for efficiency alone. But I do love riding the smaller wheels, it is one fun, snappy little bike that's for sure.

 Is there any plans to set down clear practice criteria across the enduro format, or will it continue to follow the precedent set by each event? (i.e. some events include practice, others are ridden blind)

 All events include practice, it's in our rules. But we do want to keep the format open in many ways, to keep it interesting and fun.

 Related to mtbdude562 question. How do you decide on venues? Do you take suggestions, or does your repitoire of staff know all the great trails on all continents?

I can think of a few SoCal trails that would be absolutely perfect. I think the large hub of riders in the area would also love a chance to compete.

 First and foremost we look to the organisation and how experienced they are at hosting an enduro. taking into account their links to the local riding community too. Then, if the organisation is right, we look at the trails and see if they match our vision of enduro and how they might fit into the series as a whole. Then we look at other venues in the series, travel schedules, other major events and dates. And if it all aligns, then we'll likely make a visit in the near future with the EWS.

 "Enrico-" there are thousand of nice and suitable trails and venues around the globe. Places that local communities maintain and ride. Potentially with the variety of the Enduro format you can do an Enduro race virtually everywhere you have a good trail and some elevation. An EWS venues needs to have a mix of characteristics, including accommodation, enough space and services for pits and paddock. Ideally we like to change and let riders experiment and try new venues as much as possible. And..oh year California would be nice!

 With the inclusion of southern hemisphere venues a season which is longer than April to October could be possible and is maybe a way of getting more events in. Is that an option your considering? Winter racing might also generate good coverage as the XC and DH WC wont be running at that time.

 We have talked about lengthening the season even more as it does open up more options but the teams and riders aren't quite yet in the place to be able to afford that much time or travel. We'll grow our events with the riders and teams and not before. About 7, max 8 is right for now, given current budgets.

 At which EWS round does Sven have the biggest chance of crashing that will require a helicopter ride out?

 Wherever there is a mountain, there is a chance Sven will need a heli. Especially if he's trying to keep up with Anka.

 Any chances You'll have a round in Ireland any year soon? I know the EWS courses are much longer than, lets say, the Bluegrass Enduro or any national series, but with the Bluegrass doing well here, and great reports from foreign riders who did the Irish series, is it something you'd consider? Thanks!

 "Enrico-" we just heard good about the Irish series. As said, EWS event can fit into almost any terrain, maybe a 2 day format will put enough climb and stage time into the riders. I'm pretty sure it will happen sooner or later.

 With The discipline of enduro blowing up, and much of the bike industry on the bandwagon for enduro, how do you plan to keep much of the ews races to grass roots? i would hate for it to be another uci world cup.

 We will always have a large portion of the entry open to the public. That's crucial.

 At what moment did you realize the EWS was going to be a success?

 It's early days, but everytime a rider enters or team confirms their attendance at an event, it always seems more real.

 Have you considered the idea of an Enduro world championship?

 We chose to call our series winners the World Champions after a long discussion. We felt that to be the world champion, you had to be consistent all year, just like during a race itself and that should be awarded with the highest accolade. It's also in line with the way a lot of other sports work. But, we are working on developing the Enduro of Nation concept into a one day championship for teams.

 As 26" wheels riders have more fun, and we want fun in enduro, they'll always have a place. Just maybe behind the bigger wheels in the results...

 Fabian Barel says the 26" wheels are faster than 29" if you know how to accelerate your bike.

 In certain situations all wheels sizes can be faster, but until the wheel size can be changed while riding, It all just speculation

 Was it always an important Goal for you to try and include Tweedlove in the race schedule? Must make you very proud to bring the event home!

 I'm very proud indeed. The guys at Tweedlove have done an amazing job and the diversity of trails in the Tweed Valley is second to none in the UK. We also ask our supporters where they would like to go and the UK was an important location for many of the teams and brands, as the community is so developed here.

 Due to the size of stages and the fact that there is more than one in a day, are all stages fully taped and marshalled, or is there an element of riders self regulating?

 "Enrico-" depending on the venue and the trail carachteristics you do not need to tape and have marshals all the way down. There are some open fields on the alpine stops that have "gates" and need some kind of navigation. Another riders characteristic that is typical of endure. Especially the french style. It's a good habit of enduro riders to help each other in case of accident and mechanical.

 Obviously, it's quite a tricky format for in depth media coverage; are the riders allowed headcams for their race run to help with engaging the audience and providing adequate coverage for sponsors?

 We used helmet cams a lot last year and will continue to develop this. You might see something very exciting in this regard during Whistler Crankworx this year.

 There were a bunch of rider complaints throughout the year about course cutting and cheating. Riders getting 'uplifts' etc. How is that being addressed for year two?

 There were a lot less real problems than were portrayed in the media/social media etc. We've clarified the rule on shuttling for this year and are allowing it on public open roads during training, as we can control it well enough to enforce. Course cutting will always be a point but even from round 1 to round 7 last year, we had seriously changed our course marking and by the end of the year, there were really few if any issues.

 Hi, three questions firstly how much climbing on average is there on a EWS round and secondly who is your favourite rider. Also I reckon Gracia could do well this year any thoughts?

 "Enrico-" Thanks! We'd love to see more riders attending EWS but the race format and venue can only do so much. We know it's a hot topic for many mountain bikers out there. Be aware we know and we are thinking of possible options.

 I race at local endure events and all that, usually about 15 miles. Im a decent rider but certainly not a pro, I'm thinking of driving up to Whistler to race in that one. Do you think it will be doable and worth it?

 "Enrico-" unfortunately Whistler is sold out, but I highly recommend to go anyway and have a ride the day after the event to check if you are comfortable riding the course in the given time.

 For sure. We're also looking more into Europe and the southern hemisphere. There's more great locations than space in the calendar year so we just have to take our time.

 Stages include some climbs sometimes, depending on the trail and everything within a Special Stage is timed. But as Enrico said, often, the clim only takes up 10% or a max of 20% of the total stage. So the bias is always into going downhill.

 If not already existing, when/where will the first pure EWS take place.....human powered up and down....no chair lifts, no shuttle transfers?

 Finale Ligure last year had no shuttles/lifts. Tweedlove in Scotland this year will be lift free too.

 We're in talks with the UCI and nothing will happen for this year but we will see how this develops. If we do ever sanction, it will be because it is the best call for the riders. If we feel it's not right, then we simply won't.

 Live timing is available. You can access that on our site during each race. Live coverage is a bit further away... But we're increasing our video output for this year to help

 the guys are working on some new additions for sure. Of course, land access always proves a major hurdle in North America especially but we do aim to get some more backcountry style stages in if possible.

 "Enrico-" one of the things we like the most of the EWS is the diversity of the venues and the terrain. Each event will have some special tracks and terrain that we think will contribute to the EWS experience. A lot will depend on the rider's preferred terrain and tracks.

 In your opinion, which tracks on the calendar favor which wheel size, and do you take things like that into account when trying to develop a balanced calendar (as opposed to the world cup this year which clearly seems to favor 650b)?

 "Enrico-" we have not put into account wheel size when selecting the venues, there is already to much talk on wheel sizes and 2013 EWS proved that the small wheels under fast riders kicked ass! It will be left to local organization to select the stages, but we feel like it's more the rider-machine combination that make a difference.

 I guess my point is that certain terrain does in fact favor certain wheel sizes and if 26" were to win another EWS it would certainly represent a resounding discordance with what seems the inevitable rise of 650b and demise of 26. I mean how can you kill a standard in spite of the results? The inevitability of 650b would certainly have to be re-examined.

 I think this is changing. The single biggest correlation is in history. France has had the longest serving series and it's no surprise that they now have the strongest riders. I think the USA, UK, Australia and NZ will catch up soon

 There are plenty of Fast Enduro Racers out of the US. Problem is getting the sponsorship to go travel the world to race.....I can name at least 5 guys in the bay area that would be in contention for top 20 in any EWS, but good luck getting them to the actual races. Takes a lot more than just skill to get a ride to not work and go travel the world doing mountain bike racing.

 What have you learnt with regards to the difficulty that many riders had with the booking site this year?

 We have had many long debriefings with the tech guys and we'll look at how to simplify it all in the future. We tried a pretty full on thing this year, trying to link all currencies, categories etc into one transaction and although it worked, it could be a lot better. We've learnt a lot and we'll spend the next year seeing how to improve.

 If the evidence is solid and the cut is on purpose, then yes you will see a DSQ. I hope we don't as both us as organisation and the riders as a group learned a lot in year one.

 Pisgah Productions is the organization that puts on the current enduro race. The local club is Pisgah Area SORBA. Spectacular terrain with over 300 miles of trails on the east coasts biggest mountains, and the oldest mountains in the world. Lots of talented world cup level riders are from this area or are moving there.

 The biggest limitation is the budget of the riders and teams. It's very expensive to ride and race around the world. Right now, 7 or a max of 8 is right for the riders.

 I honestly don't know. It's certainly going to be a lot closer than last year, We're adjusting the points structure so that the series is tighter and looking at the way the teams and riders are preparing, it's going to be a much harder fight at the top.
