Casey Brown isn't your typical rider or racer. She's got style that is unmatchable, a personality that lights up the room, and she isn't terribly fond of wearing shoes. But what's really incredible about Casey is her life story and everything she's overcome to evolve into the amazing person she is today. Part Breaking Bad, part Swiss Family Robinson, this is Casey Brown Beyond the Bike.
Doing this story on Casey was definitely a highlight of my year. She's been an inspiration to me for so long now, but really getting to know her story and just see her optimism is incredible. Major props to Jasper for his work on the video. It's quite moving. Well done, Gromnado.
I love these videos that give us a "behind the bike" view of these top riders in our sport. It's a bit weird, but it is so easy to start forming a "character" for these people based on their race performance, their facial expressions on the podium (i.e. Gee Atherton), their style on the bike, etc... It is great to get to know them a bit.
That is an excellent story - Casey has quite the history. She's totally right about not doing things that make you miserable; it took me too long to figure out. She also has the best hair in MTB. Seriously.
I feel stupid to have never connected the dots to Sam before. Amazing history to rise from. A great example of resilience. Regardless of story...she has such amazing style and fun to watch ride.
Exactly. As soon as she said she had a brother who was a pro free rider... The mind starts churning... Then my heart sank remembering the tragic ending of Sam Brown... then she she explained further.
I'm still floored, that was so sad when it happened.
Yep. Every time I cross the border from Rossland down towards Spokane I think of his story and the tragic end. So sad. I can't believe I never connected the two. I would certainly imagine that experiencing that, as well as her early life in remote NZ on the run, you would evaluate life a little different. Fingers crossed for continued World Cup support as she does Canada proud.
Sorry for what you and your family have been through Casey. Thanks for sharing and inspiring people to do what they love. Life is too short. Keep up the great attitude, we need more people with your mindset and skill set on this earth. Shred on!
This is the best video I've watched all year! Hope I can have as much style as she does one day. Love how you can genuinely see she rides because she loves it. Look up to her as a role model a lot!
yep! not the biggest team but a lot of the big companies do not have a female rider. I am pretty sure that Hannah and Atherton have the luck of having a brother on the same team.
This story motivates me to start traveling with my bike. I always thought it to be kind of stupid and unrealistic, but life is short and trails are plenty. I'm always watching and hoping that Casey will scare some racers on the podium, keep it up girl!
It was very sad that a guy of his talent got caught up in that and had his life come to such an early end. CBC Fifth Estate did a show on Sam (although I can't vouch for its accuracy) which I'm sure you can find online. I too, never realized that Casey was Sam's sister and didn't know about the seriousness of her 2011 injuries either. I am blown away by how she's been able to find the strength to overcome it all. Shred on Casey!
love that line" you don't know how long you have, if you don't like whats happening, change it up, you got no time to be miserable" there's a few people i know who could learn for her.
but really great video, what an amazing rider.
