Brandon Semenuk's Custom Stereo - Biggs does it Big

Aug 20, 2009

When we heard JBL was doing a custom stereo install with their sponsored rider Brandon Semenuk, we brought out the cameras and filmed the process from start to finish. Brandon recently purchased a new Subaru Impreza WRX with his earnings from his recent wins and was ready to get the thump put in the trunk.

Click here for the video of the Brandon Semenuk JBL Stereo install...

Brandon Semenuk has made a big name for himself in the industry. Consistent slopestyle wins have been treating Brandon's bank account well and sponsors happy and with his recent film work done with Ant Hill films, Brandon's name is only growing. The Whistler rider has been around the world spreading his style, but managed to take some time off to get his new car all dialed in stereo wise.

Brandon's ride gets dialed:

Gary Biggs - The man with the plan
Gary Biggs - The man with the plan

Gary Biggs was flown in to do Brandon's custom stereo install. Biggs is a JBL man through and through, so he knew what he was getting himself into with this stereo install. He came prepared to lay it all down on a tight time line, and hopefully blow Brandon's mind with what he created. Here's a photo of what Gary Biggs had to work with.

In the end, Brandon was absolutely stoked with his stereo install. I had a chance to talk with him at Crankworx Whistler and he said the stereo sounds sick, and everything looks great.

  • + 15
flag ambrose (Aug 20, 2009 at 19:00)
Actually according to Gary the deck is a brand new Kenwood model that was just released and it retails for $1500 us pretty sweet deck. It has blue tooth usb, navigation, built in sirius reciever...lots of extra bells and whistles. Gary also originally wanted to put in the JBL anniversary speakers which are super sweet but they are to big and he would have had to modify the doors and the tweeter ports and do a bunch of custom work that he didn't have time for. He only had 3 days to do the install and building the box from scratch took up a bunch of time. Time was also a reason that he went with a wood bondo box aver fiberglass. He would not have had the time to build the fiberglass box and let it dry.It was pretty interesting seeing him build it live for sure.
  • + 1
flag sassysally (Aug 23, 2009 at 13:30)
Oh yea, the deck is ballin.

And yea, i guess i have heard stories about the amount of work it takes to get subarus systems pimped since the shallow mounting depth in the doors. So given that he had that little time and whatnot.... it makes sense. Minus the choice of to power series subs. Still think they cheaped out a little. 1 JBL gti mkII 15 woulda easily been more badass. The power series are like 75 dollar subs or something stupid. Cheaped out on subs without an excuse there.

subaru is notorious for bad stock sound. maybe your not an audiophile, so its fine that you dont notice. Subaru took the money from the sound and invested it into the CAR. plus hes sponsored, so they wanted him rockin their shit.

  • + 3
flag jonbikes (Aug 20, 2009 at 12:38)
That's because capacitors are crap for a stereo application. You would need an absolutly HUGE capacitor to be able to discharge enough power to do much of anything. A 1 farad capacitor can discharge 22 watts RMS for one second, whats that doing for your 500wrms sub? A cap also has nothing to do with keeping your battery from going dead, all it does is helps buffer the spikes in voltage so you get a smother delivery to your amp and less of a spike in voltage drops. But, like I said, you would need an absolutely HUGE cap to really help anything at all, and even then a cap won't do shit under constant load; once it discharges it takes time to recharge.

i dont understand why people buy a 300 hp awd independant rear suspension car and then add 300 pounds of aftermarket stereo equipment to it. may as well put 20's on it while you are at it. i realize he prolly got it for free but that is the last thing i would do to a vehicle of that caliber. Gut it and put in a bigger turbo.

Dead weight??? He's not racing it, so why does the weight matter? He wanted the speakers, so he bought them, or got them free. If he wanted a race car, he would buy one.
It's his money he can do what he wants with it, and he's probably enjoying this investment a lot.
