The legendary Galbraith trails in Bellingham, WA are probably not the kind of trails where you'd expect to see a 29er being thrown about... Times are changing, especially with the king of the cutties, Bryn Atkinson at the helm.

The most impressive part about this video (besides destroying corners and hucking) was the fact that it's shot entirely by Bryn himself, no moving shots, no gimmicks, just letting all the riding do the talking, amazing stuff.... Definitely inspirational
  • 24 2
Exactly. The minimalism actually works great here.
  • 12 2
This is gna make cinematographers nervous.
  • 51 1
I was impressed by this - Music: Bryn Atkinson
  • 15 3
wait, he wrote and recorded the music too?
  • 7 1
 Nice Bryn! Well Done
  • 7 1
@mattsavage: I believe so. That's what makes it even sicker.

I still think we need a Bryn Atkinson vs Luke Strobel battle of the 29ers NW video competition

it would have been better if he was not riding a 29er. he would not of cased the last jump. I still LOVE my 26!

@bikerguy24: that part of u line isn't normally jumped as a triple.its a small double to a pump then another small jump.

Wheel debate was so last year. Move on @bikerguy24

Wow. Every component of this edit is masterfully executed... Not to mention the sick riding!
Really like the music too. Beautiful job @Bryn-Atkinson what a boss!

There is no wheel size debate. 26 is the best obviously. Riders like Brandon semeuk and Brett rheadar and Aaron gwaen use because it is tHe Best. On my local trails, the smaller wheels make for bigger airs bicause they are light!
  • 12 1
@bikerguy24: who is Aaron Gwaen? Internet explorer couldn't help me find him.

"The legendary Galbraith trails in Bellingham, WA are probably not the kind of trails where you'd expect to see a 29er being thrown about..."

I dont get this. These seem like the perfect trails to ride on any MTB. Fast smooth trails with no real gnar that could be ridden on anything from BMX to a DH bike. #tiredofthemarketingBS
  • 27 5
sound shit if you can ride them on a BMX TBH
  • 14 4
@poah: What if it's a BMX with 200mm travel and 27.5 wheels? Hold on... I think I might have just stumbled on the new fad....
  • 15 2
@bigtim @kiwimtber There aren't many trials up there that are fit for a BMX... he just showed some of the flowy sections from the mountain and jumps from the one machine built jump line. Granted its not proper NW loam and gnar on that hill but if your looking for a good AM ride that's where its at!

Ps. Perfect trails for any modern MTB, regardless of wheel size...
  • 30 30
I ride a 29er and making tight turns is much more difficult than on a 27.5 bike.
  • 9 2
 Thats funking fast.
  • 39 19
 @unrooted: I ride a 29er and I don't notice any difference in tight corners.
  • 21 14
 @ithomas: I ride a 29er and 27.5 feel twitchy and nervous.
  • 36 5
 #tiredofpeoplemadatmarketingBS
  • 2 1
@chileconqueso: kinda true. Been on an evil following 6months w/140fork, MM w/38 LB rims(brings that tire to 275+ area)...after that, everything else feels small. Tight, slow technical turns and climbs are more difficult- take more energy.
  • 9 4
 @unrooted: you're doing it wrong
  • 6 0
lol that line got me too. Last time I was at galby it was nothing but trail bikes, plenty of niners.
  • 2 0
@anchoricex: yeah I don't remember any mindblowing gnar when I was there. 29er was fine, except I did screw up a switchback or two. You could ride pretty much anything there.
  • 6 4
@2bigwheels: maybe, but the lower tight turns on Off The Top at Mammoth cause me to come to a complete stop on a 29" Banshee Prime, but I can roll around them on a 27.5" session...
  • 5 1
@unrooted: You don't think there might be more involved than just wheel size? Angles, wheelbase, every other variable? I haven't ridden both bikes so I can't say, but I do know there's more to handling than just the hoops.
  • 7 1
the BS factor does seem to be off the charts at present eh?
  • 3 1
@kiwitimber Oh there is gnar at Galbraith.
  • 6 3
@unrooted: Since when are all 29ers the exact same? Mine works just fine in the Twisties. You sure it's the bike?
  • 3 3
@CaptainSnappy: shhhhh don't tell them that!
  • 5 3
@jamesbrant: Only on PB... Bike companies know that a large part of the PB community likes to make assumptions and decisions based on what they hear/ read instead of just going out and f*cking riding the bikes or components that they already somehow have an "educated" opinion on. So they pump the cliche advertising to the next level just to try and capture the uninformed and see if they can convert them.... unfortunately... You can't fix stupid.
  • 1 2
@unrooted: that's because off the tops corners are poorly designed
  • 2 2
@unrooted: Do you have a new geo 29thos....My 27.5 just sits there now..
  • 2 2
 @2bigwheels: I agree, shhhhhhh!
  • 2 5
There's a couple gnar trails that aren't on the galby map,esp if you include lookout mtn..but I agree the marketing overload is stupid
  • 6 1
@poah: vimeo.com/141282886 riding them on a bmx was pretty rough.
  • 56 3

  • 33 2
What about the broom though? Gotta be on a Firebolt if you wanna win the Quidditch WC.
  • 16 3
 Yes, I like tits too.
  • 34 3
The whole passive aggressive thing with 29ers has gotten real old and real cliche. So many reviews still say things like, "surprisingly nimble for a 29er" or "was really fun for a 29er" or they act like this new bike they are reviewing is the first 29er that was ever actually enjoyable to ride. I just fing love bikes, can't Pinkbike, NSMB and the others just do the same?
  • 13 1
Did you forget the URL in your browser? This is Pinkbike, not hold-hands-and-get-along.com. We hate each other based off wheel size preference here. Period.

Pick one, hate anyone who picks a different one. Those are the rules.
  • 2 0
@atourgates: I love bikes too much to hate other people who ride them
  • 3 1
@marcsb95c: I think you might be taking the vernacular too seriously. It just seems cheeky to me, not passive aggressive. It's funny because of the perceived notion that everyone hates 29ers when obviously that's not the case. Sure the joke is old but the perception hasn't gone away.
  • 1 0
Also like the marathon riding buddy who for years misses the fact that early on there were hardly any decent AM/enduro 29ers around and would say things like - "get one and you'll see" (referring to their 100mm travel steep XC bike) and completely missing the fact that you are on a 160mm travel bike and ride DH trails... It works both ways, which is why there is this passive aggressive thing going with 29ers to this day.
  • 1 0
@marcsb95c: i doubt he literally 'hates' those people. he's just pointing out the absurdity in the binary reactions to such a benign topic.
  • 23 1
My god, I dream of linking corners tha fast.
  • 4 0
Perfect technique, reminds me of Connor Fearon.
  • 21 3

  • 12 0
That speed and style on a bike is unmistakeable. You know it's Bryn even if you're not told. I know style doesn't often equate to less seconds on the clock but I do miss the individual riding styles of Kovarik, Rennie, Bryn etc on the WC circuit.
  • 2 0
 Are you an Aussie too?

"The legendary Galbraith trails in Bellingham, WA are probably not the kind of trails where you'd expect to see a 29er being thrown about..."

That's a truly odd thing to say about the trails that inspired and served as the proving ground for the Smuggler and the Process 111. Not to mention the Satori. And the Honzo. And the Covert. And the new Hei Heis.

Signed, the last dude riding a Satori in Bellingham because all my friends upgraded...to newer 29ers.
  • 2 0
Well this was written by Bryn who I would assume is a purist towards 26ers and moved on to 650B. He used to be a WC racer after all...I'd imagine it's pretty hard to get those guys on 29ers regardless, look at Sam Hill, no shot he'll ever be riding one. FYI, the father of arguably the two fastest kids in Bham still rides a Satori.
  • 1 0
@Freerideguy14: #dadbikes Wink Nah, it's a great ride. The black and white one from 2012 (what I have) is still one of Kona's best paint jobs ever, too.
  • 7 0
Don't forget the Riot, Yelli Screamy, and the Nimble 9.
  • 1 0
@Rucker10: shame on me for reals
  • 1 0
 Bmck@ where were you at the Enduro of subdued excitement? Your not the last satori. . . . . . . . . . . .
  • 1 1
@Freerideguy14: maybe fastest in the pacific NW! ! !
  • 2 1
Bellingham is home to three companies that produce very progressive and aggressive 29er's, Canfield Brothers, Kona and Transition. Riot, Yelli-Screamy, Nimble 9, EPO, Process 111, Smuggler... To say Bham's not about it is silly, I'm significantly faster on my Process 111, climbing and descending that my Spartan on all of the trails on Galbraith and elsewhere in town.
  • 1 0
@MX298: Ha, I was being _slightly_ hyperbolic. There's at least one other dude who rides the black and white 2012 like me, not to mention either of the other model years. I was at the Enduro last year, flailing my way to mid-pack in the sports
  • 10 0
My home trails! But honestly the worst title to a video. Who cares what tire size ya ride, just go for a rip and have a good time.
  • 26 18
Still remember the good old days, when the messiahs announced the arrival of a new god called 29er. as many of the parishioners were not really up for changing their beliefs that fast, they ended up adopting another strategy and thought that maybe the change shouldn't be so abrupt, so decided the new god would be called 650b. the salvation of our souls was virtually assured as long as we took up this new religion where all were advantages.
Today, when the new god has already triumphed and believers in the old one have been burned at the stake (those f*cking pagans deserved it), the messiahs have decided that maybe the time's come to get 29er back and add him to Mount Olympus. Why the f*ck be a monotheist? with two gods you double options and make people happier.
But hey, who knows, as people say, we, the parishioners, always have the last word cause we are so clever and always know what we want, don't we?
  • 53 12
 Shut up.
  • 13 4
To bad so many uninformed don't realize 650B was here long before 29er.
  • 5 3
@TheOriginalTwoTone: I didn't know, thanks for catching me up with that. And just curious, how long before?

Stumpy was the midget who lit the bonfires in which pagans were burned, that is usually done by brain dead boys.
  • 8 3
 @TheOriginalTwoTone:

700C is the same diameter as 29er. 700C's been around a long time.
  • 6 2
@TheOriginalTwoTone: wat? 29 = 700c, which has been around since forever...
  • 7 0
 @TheOriginalTwoTone: Who gives a shit!
  • 11 4
I'll never understand the stigma that clings to a 29er. Yes, maybe at first they were awkward, but anyone who still thinks a modern day 29er is somehow a handicap hasn't given one a chance. They're not hard to corner with and not even hard to jump.
  • 1 0
I love my 29er but for some reason I still don't have the confidence to rail corners or jumps on it vs. doing that on my regular 26". The pedaling and quality of riding makes up for anything else though, would never go back!
  • 11 2
What is wrong with 29ers? I love my 29er and plan on getting another one as my next small (AKA trail bike or AM) bike.
  • 8 0
One of those videos I wish it would have been at least 15 minutes long. Everything about this video was sick! Guess I'll have to press the replay button a couple of times Big Grin

  • 11 3
Sooo...how bad i am at cornering is not due to the weelsize...
  • 26 11
Considering that 2-ply Minion on 26" wheel has more innertia than Minion Exo on 29" wheel, you have very little room for excuses. We were all riding freight train wheels but we were blinded by our hate. Weed + physics will save us.
  • 4 1
+ the diameter just affects the force needed to steer, but not the turn radius which is given by the wheelbase.

Now think of the weight of motorcycle wheels, they must be impossible to turn at 100kmh Wink
  • 3 1
@WAKIdesigns: hahaha! One love mon! Everything irie
  • 5 1
@SickEdit: Also (same as moto) if you're trying to corner by turning your wheel at speed, you're gonna die. Countersteer bruh
  • 6 0
Very stylish and smooth riding and great job filming ....it was nice not to see slow motion dirt flying through the air and other video bling
  • 8 4
Hating on 29ers has been mostly a tribal and reflexive reaction. 27.5 came along and gave everyone a chance to try a larger wheel size without the self-loathing that would result in trying (and risking liking) the dreaded 29er. A few years pass, and time on 27.5 showed riders that larger wheels really do roll over gnarly terrain better. And now with so many great 29ers with better geometry on the market, the old reflexive hatred is dying off -- especially with taller riders who fit the bikes naturally well
  • 4 1
29ers are bigger bikes...the majority of people riding them are "man sized men" who require a larger bike as to not look like their on a kids bike. I think the hate comes from the lack of size required to "throw" them around...big dude=big bike
  • 2 0
@sjdeweese: I agree with expression "big dude=big bike"!
I am 183 cm tall and I ride 27,5 frame with 26 wheels and I feel perfect.
But If I were 195 cm I would like to have 29 frame with 27,5 wheels and 29fram+29wheels for 205+ cm.
And when I see how some people 160cm tall rides 29ers I want to cry!))
  • 1 0
@sjdeweese: 26 and 27.5 feel small and twitchy to me, 29, feels just right. I'm 6'3'' and believe wheel size and height are be logically associated.
  • 9 1
Kona Process 111 was literally made for Galby.
  • 1 2
Seconded, it is hands down the fastest, most fun bike I've ever ridden!
  • 5 0
I ride the same trails, on a 29er with pretty much the same geometry, and I can only dream of doing it anywhere this well. Nice bit of inspiration. Gotta go ride now!
  • 4 1
Are we now going to have to preface every video with what wheel size they are riding? It seems a certain wheel size may have an inferiority complex. Here's a good idea for a video title, we don't care what wheel size you are riding.
  • 7 1
Cutty's filthier than Mick Fanning Mate!!! Well done!
  • 29 24
Riding a 29er is like sex with your cousin , it's kinda fun but its just not right ...
  • 30 2
I thought that was totally legit in Australia.
  • 2 1
 Call bullshit on that one..
  • 2 0
That's what makes it so good.
  • 2 1
Being 6'3'' my 29er feels spot on, and in the last year I've owned 26'' 27.5'' and 29'' bikes. For me 29er enables rowdier riding, the grip is remarkable. And I live in Bellingham, the riding shown here is Galby-lite, I take my Kona Process 111 to straight gnar and I'm still cleaning it significantly faster than on my Devinci Spartan.
  • 1 0
@Pastafarion: I hear Ya.. I'm 6'3 as well and get rowdy on a 16 fuel ex 9.9 130mm pike.. At this point it feels like a 26 to me.. Just plain shreds! Everything else feels tiny..

  • 3 0
I spotted a 36mm Fox fork on there and solid black Norco decals instead of the outlined version on the 2016 bike. Could this be a 2017 Norco Optic C9.1?
  • 3 0
The majority of Galby is XC oriented with pedaling required. 29er's are perfect. Those pushing park bikes up tower are the clowns.
  • 2 0
Can't think why a 29er on these trails is suprising at all. You could have a blast on an XC bike there. I was expecting something like a WC dh track . Great vid and riding though!
  • 1 3
Nothing on Galbraith "needs" full suspension. The mountain is easily cleaned on Nimble 9, TransAM, Yelli-Screamy, Honzo etc.
  • 2 0
I was at Galby a few months back. It's an ideal place for 29ers, 27.5ers, and 26ers to shred. You have to go up to go down. Overall very flowy trails. Can't wait to go back.
  • 5 1
People who still complain about 29er are the ones who never rode one.
  • 2 0
Exactly!he could have gone down that trail on a 29" 27.5" 26" 20" or Evan a kids trike it would still be faster than any of us. Myth not busted.
  • 1 1
I'm on an "old school" 2015 Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon. 70* head angle and all..
I used full MX skills on a super tight 'trenched' switchback in NorCal- bike swapping, on the edge of control at every switch.
Left my buddy on a 27.5 in the dust like never before, and destroyed my previous best time. Set on my 26" wheel bike!
29'ers are a trade-off, not a compromise. They work great for me!
  • 4 0
Really well done video Bryn! Can't wait for more.

I wonder who came up with that title.. Its brilliant
  • 4 0

  • 1 0
@johnnygolucky There are so many Kona Process's up there, every time I go up I see one, and I go once to twice a week. I've demoed one and they are great, I would prefer either a Kona or a Transition bike.
  • 2 0
Fook me that's some riding! just my kinda style too fast and flowy (except half as fast on a good day). Didn't notice the case at 1:16 though.

Let's take 1 second to appreciate how ridiculously effortless Bryn's riding style looks!
  • 2 0
How much travel is on that bike? I am salivating over a Transition Smuggler but I keep thinking I need more travel..
  • 4 0
Think it is the Optic. 110mm rear travel
  • 4 0
@Excelsior01: Thanks. That's even less than the Smuggler. And the guy in the video is riding it harder then I ride my 160mm Covert.
  • 6 5
@beerandbikes: the longer spokes on 29 wheels allow for a bit more flex, feeling like an extra inch of suss.
  • 1 0
only 114mm on my Yeti sb4.5 and I've yet to find its limits. I like to think I ride pretty hard.
  • 2 2
It may not be the optic.... Norco press camp is wrapping up today, maybe you'll see some new 29ers in their lineup soon.
  • 2 0
@Excelsior01: sure looks like one, but over forked with at least a 140 set fox 36.
  • 2 0
@j-t-g: If you click on the photo, it says Norco Optic.
  • 2 0
@Stinhambo: yeah I realised that after. Also their two new 29ers look completely different from the optic anyway.

That's not quite true. I can change direction like that on my 29er hardtail and it has 440mm chainstays, it's geared... Granted, you need to be focused and not get lazy, but it's totally possible. I could have got a 2x or 1x frame with shorter stays, 420mm or so in 135mm or 142mm axle spacing. As far as boost goes with full suspension, you can have short chainstays without it. Evil the Following has 432mm with 142mm and the Wreckoning has boost and 432mm chainstays. I don't know what size he's riding, but Norco chainstay length grows with the size of frame. S-425mm, M-430mm, L-435mm, XL-440mm. So based on size, boost has little consequence in handling in larger sizes, but will add some strength to the wheel structure.
