Building a trail is both an art and a science. The best ones are aesthetic wonders, a stark line of dirt snaking through the most scenic bits of land, a mountain biker's landscape painting brought to life. Unfortunately there's no specific formula for trail building - it takes years to master the alchemy of crafting flow. From your first shaky pedal strokes to the game-changing moves of the sport's top pros, our sport is shaped by shovels and pick axes in endless pursuit of the perfect ride. Builder tells the story of trail building, through the eyes of some of our sport's best riders and most respected builders.

Building images

Through a series of carefully crafted segments, Builder will explore the art of trail building and how it impacts the sport of mountain biking and the lives of those who ride. The film will synthesize the experiences of many into a narrative that looks to expose the soul of mountain biking - why do we dig? From the youngest groms daydreaming of dirt glory, to the professional builders and sponsored riders who have the means to create it, Builder will tell the complete story of how built lines come into existence and more importantly, why they matter.

Building images

Each segment will highlight an aspect of building, a new location, and a rider (or team of riders), as we follow the growth of the trail builder. The narrative will parallel each riding segment and delve into the mind of today’s freeride trail builder to better understand what fuels the fire of this subculture of creation. Builder cinematically reaffirms No Dig No Ride, as riders continue their quest for building greatness throughout the trials and tribulations they face along the way. Builder will document each build period as they face the realities of terrain, equipment, access and ability versus dreams and plans.

Building images

The builds will reflect the riding style of the athletes and their perspective on what makes the ultimate line. Whether it’s a ladder bridge or a 40-foot step down, we’ll see each rider’s vision of what mountain biking looks like to them. The edits will feature inspired riding that is only achieved when a line is designed for a specific rider’s unique style. Each riding segment will showcase not only the talents of the riders, but also the merit of the build.

Filming will take place in various locations throughout British Columbia and the USA. From the near-vertical chutes of Williams Lake and the deep mystic of the North Shore, to the urban sprawl of New Jersey and the stark peaks of Retallack, athletes will build and ride in the most stunning landscapes imaginable.

Starring: Darren Berrecloth, Cam Zink, James Doerfling, Garett Buehler, Aaron Chase, Geoff Gulevich, Chris Kovarik, Brian Lopes, Ryan Berrecloth, Matt Macduff, Mark Matthews, Mike Kinrade, Adam Hauck, Jackson Goldstone, Seth Sherlock, Peter Matthews, and Stephen Matthews.

Scott Secco is a full time filmmaker (and part time trail builder) from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He has interned for Aaron LaRocque and Sherpas Cinema, and thanks them for teaching him everything he knows. He’s stoked on good light, fresh cedar, and carrying heavy camera bags up mountains; his favourite movie is Life Cycles. Builder is his first feature film.

Just got back from inspecting my latest feature on my gravity jump trail. The dirt has set like rock, the moon was rising bigger than I have ever seen it, and today I burst the blood blister earned from 6 hours of lugging, shaping and smacking dirt into compaction. And tomorrow I hit it for the first time. This is why I build and all others alike. Part art, part ego, all rewarding when your homies see it and hit it for the first time, and all work-out. I salute the diggers massive worldwide.

Holy crap 6 hours? My back can only handle like 3. But im stoked for you man, there is no better feeling than hitting a new trail u built and getting that big ol' smile on your face at the bottom.

I salute to you my fellow builders. Blood and sweat in every trail. The worthiness of the ride later. Without thee, the trails I ride would not exist. Smile

Ha interesting that this came out just as I finished building new section of a local trail, at first I couldn't handle 4 hours of digging, yesterday I ended up doing 8... certainly a good all round work out.

Trail builders are awesome. They work their ass off to make great track for free for people. Many times I happened to ride with friends some very fun and well thought-out tracks and I'm always thinking "damn, I wish the builders could see that big smile on our faces when riding their track, that is the most authentic form of reward we can give them".

i never have enough time....darkness sends me home....i get in a zone, i don't get tired, i just wanna to get a little more dirt over here then a little more over there

I may not build now, but i support builders!!! I know the time will come for me to build trails for the next generation of riders!!! Respect to you builders of amazing trails!!!!!!

@ Barkit They also accept beer and/or food as a reward Big Grin
  • 2 0
They also don't mind if you come and stick a shovel to the ground with them every now and then. It gives you an opportunity to meet new people and possibly have some input on the trail and it gives the builders feedback on their masterpieces. Win win situation. If you're struggling to catch them there, try going at different times on different days. You'll catch them eventually and when you do, as mentioned above, they like food and/or beer...

I've done 3 6hr days in a row, after a day break after doing another 3 days in a row on a trail. Ruined my arms and still haven't hit my own track properly on the bike. Never overdo it,it;s not worth it Smile

that sucks, at last you can ride after some rest

We always ride for an hour and dig for an hour ratio Smile

Well played Pinkbike! This is going to be awesome…Scott Secco is one of the hardest working, most psyched camera man and editor I've worked with. We've redlined him pulling crazy hours and deadlines at CWX etc and this kid can go!! With a great cast and crew I'm looking forward to seeing BUILDER come to life!!

A guy came to our trails once and said that riding gives you ego, but digging gives you soul. I thought it was a bit cliche at the time but overall I believe the sentiment to be true. I've taken my bike to the trails only once since October. You might think that's mad but the real madness is I've helped create a line I'm too scared to hit!!! I know when I get through it for the first time I will probably pass out from the elation. You can't buy that feeling.

Scott secco is the most (SOMETHING REALLY NICE AND THOUGHTFUL) guy I know.
  • 5 0
 proud of you matthew.
  • 10 0
Hopefully the armchair trail builder, those who turn up and ride then criticise but fail to put anything back in, will see this and next time there's a local dig day volunteer their services.
  • 9 0
Totally stoked Scott! Can't wait for these segments to come out. Building is one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences of riding in my opinion. Can't wait to see how you capture it!

Scott is one of the most rad and passionate dudes/cinematographers I know. He puts serious effort into every piece of content he works on. (Even if its 3am during crankworx and he has to do the same thing over again in a few short hours). Couldn't be more excited to see this project come to fruition, beers are on me this weekend Secco.

I hope this project takes into account all the hard work that goes into keeping legal trails open for the masses and not just one hit wonder film trails.

In certain areas the illegal film lines can and do hurt the good work being done trying to keep the other trails open. Trail organizations like the NSMBA on the Shore put in countless hours at meetings with Land Managers working towards compromise on the legal trails only to get ambushed with questions on why the riding community still feel the need to build rogue lines. Instead of working towards better legal trails they then need to fire fight the situation of illegal trails.

The ethos of No Dig No Ride is good, but can be taken the wrong way. Not all digging is for the better of the community as a whole.

I challenge the film makers to actually talk to every local trail organization in the zones they plan to build / shoot in and ask if the project will have a negative impact on the legal trail situation.

I'm from Europe, so can't comment much on the particular situation across the pond, but over here, I'd tell you - "y'know how it is". Legalizing (and keeping legal) is a Sysyphean job. It's meetings, arguments, generally an endless effort that is, to your average digger, rather ethereal. Worst of all, in the end it's often up to some smug bureaucrat in the city counsil (and how well he's woken up on the particular day that he gets to decide about your trail), whether you get a green light, or not. Not sure how it works in Canada, but where I live, it's a nuthouse. A dozen stamps, expert appraisals from people who know nothing about bike trails, apparently everyone is invited to have a say in the matter. And days, weeks and months pass, just so you can build half a mile of singletrack somewhere near your home. The fact is, it often simply isn't worth it. And if illegal trails undermine the legal trails, all I can say is, there will *always* be illegal trails, somewhere, somewhen. If the councils / land managers / those in charge 'ambush' your efforts with this kind of an argument, I think they are just disguising outright disapproval of any trails, legal or not, and will always find another excuse, even when this one won't apply.

Awesome, cant wait to see this. ... Just finished a new section tonight actually still many features to add to rest of trail, but I love seeing what others do and take inspiration even though Ive been playing in the dirt for 40yrs and still feel like a kid. This should be amazing. Few weeks back visited home town not been to in few years found an old line Id made with some freinds when we were 8-9 and its still they're in the old part if town, was good in the late 70s early 80s and its still good now amazed its survived, so has the outdoor skating rink. Building is a passion u have it or u dont u cant make someone passionate for it , like riders Ive seen many come many gone fair weather riders, few conquer. 4hrs in rain winter here now 2hrs of dry love it. Im still learning still coming up with new ideas its sic. Look forward to seeing this.

Spent countless days building lines only to have them destroyed by the city. Here in Southern California we may only have days to hit a line that took months to build. It's always still worth it. Been waiting for a film highlighting the build. Cant wait

I love trailbuilding so much; it's just another part of why I like mountainbiking so much. I think Scott's made a good choice to show the building that has to happen before the riding can. The video will be fresh and interesting and show the hard work that goes into making a riding segment happen. Look forward to seeing this.

With all due respect to builders and this movie, I took my "first shaky pedal strokes" far from man made bike trails, but in the woods, simply riding along hiking paths. The start is easy, that's so appealing in this manifold sport. Only with experience and skills one asks for trails "shaped by shovels and pick axes in endless pursuit of the perfect ride". I'm sure that was the case with most of us, although today there may be kids starting to ride their bike on a pumptrack or even downhill course from scratch.
  • 1 0
Well, hiking trails also didn't come 'out of the blue'. Particularly in Switzerland, where they are often as fantastic as some designated "bike trails" in my area. The question is, once you've progressed and tasted the ecstasy a genuinely great, purpose-built trail can bring, would you want to go back to "natural" trails only? (You can always do that, after all, but it doesn't work the other way round...)
  • 1 0
Hell yeah I would! And I do. - You just can't compare high speed manicured berms or even gnarly downhill race tracks to natural alpine trail riding, both is right and awesome! - Anyway, in my previous comment I refered to the first steps only.

Seriously awesome looking film...... but it gives me trail building envySmile . I love digging trails and features almost more than riding them, but I cant afford a chainsaw and certainly not any other heavy machinery. seeing these guys getting to play and create with diggers etc makes me a bit jelo for sure.
  • 2 0
All I say is wow!! This is a truly inspirational clip, I mean it makes me want to go and finish working on a trail I've been working on. Slightly gutted I'm gonna have to wait a year, but I'm sure its going to be worth the wait. A massive well done Scott can't wait!!
  • 2 0
These films are very entertaining. I just cant relate. Why they dig is different then why I dig.
The trail builder has to keep every one in mind and build at a realistic level of difficulty. Huge jumps are cool but how many people bust huge air?
I hope this film shows the aspect of why WE dig as well as the pro,s dig doing big stunts.
  • 5 0
 Looks like a sick project
  • 4 0
now imagine someone buldings trails like this without the digger...thats me
  • 3 0
For me, it's even no chainsaw, nor manicured wooden planks for yer 'north shore', more often than not. Nor a pickup truck to haul the tools in place. Everything I build with, I have to be able to fit in an old hiking backpack, and then drag it there meself. So ultimately, everything takes about 10 times as long, hence I get to build only one tenth of the stuff they do. At best. It's slightly frustrating, to be honest...

Hey Secco, I simply can't wait for this. Although a year is quite a while. In the mean time here's my 2 pence worth of building trails in New Zealand if you have 5 mins and a cup of tea.

Hey @wordupg, thanks so much for sharing man! Looks like you guys had a great time building. There's nothing more rewarding than riding what you dug yourself. Great song choice too.

I'm sorry about the long wait for the movie, but hopefully it'll be worth it. I definitely need to make my way down to New Zealand for the sequel...

As a fellow builder I build trail for a living 12 hours a day every single day and only get days off when it rains, It is awesome to see appreciation for builders. It is very hard work and a bit of a sacrifice from your riding because you are to physically tired to ride after building some days. And to see support from so many is very encouraging, because builders have to sacrifice riding to build and people who just always ride new trails wouldn't get to ride all the time if it wasn't for those who sacrificed they're riding for everyone else.

I hope they go into minute detail about the building....
