Video: Cam McCaul in New Zealand

This past February, Cam McCaul found himself in an unusual position at Crankworx New Zealand. Cam would be using his unique skill set and to announce the event as opposed to battling it out for a podium spot. This afforded him some extra time to check out the local trails. So Cam took a break from the slopestyle course to get in some trail riding aboard his carbon Trek Slash with C3 Project videographer, Harrison Mendel.

bigquotesI've been to New Zealand quite a few times, but believe it or not, I've never really had the opportunity to do as much riding there as I would like. My first few trips were littlered with injury / busy Nitro Circus Live tour schedules, so until this recent mission down there for Crankworx Rotorua, I hadn't had the chance to sample the amazing trails that you always hear about. I made up for lost time on this trip and was able to hit trails on both the North and South islands, and as it turns out, its not just hype... New Zealand's trails are a blast! - Cam McCaul

bigquotesI've been competing in slopestyle contests since 2003, and this year I made the decision to switch up my role in these events by hopping into the announcer's booth rather than having my name on the start list. I've always thought in the back of my mind that it would be cool to commentate slopestyle once I was done competing, and this year it just seemed like the time was right. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to announce all 3 stops of the Crankworx World Tour, and with one event already under our belt, I'm having a blast and excited for the next two. It was a completely different experience being at a slopestyle contest and not competing. I rode all of the practice sessions in Rotorua so that I would have a good understanding of the course flow and be able to make predictions of what the riders were planning. It's crazy how much more you notice when you're not stuck in your own little world trying to choreograph your own run. With the decreased stress levels, I was able to spend some time on my Slash exploring what Rotorua's local trail network had to offer. Harrison Mendel and I made our way to a place they call "The Redwoods" and to my surprise it had some terrain that was super similar to what I grew up riding in Aptos CA. Later on in the trip we found ourselves down in Queenstown riding some of those iconic South Island trails. It felt good to finally do some exploring in New Zealand, and I'm stoked we were able to put together this little trail vid to remember the trip. - Cam McCaul

Cam is such a legend. Always love watching him ride and am happy to see him commentating. He is great behind the mic and actually knows what he is talking about.

I'm disappointed he's outta the game, but yeah now we finally have a solid commentator that knows WTF he's talkin' 'bout & knows HTF to talk about it. I don't think there's a better guy for the job.

I'll always love the casual flow and fun slope style athletes bring on trail bikes !

These manuals and whips : it doesn't get any better than that .

Nothin' like the steez of a seasoned top level freerider rippin' flowy trails. That hop in/out manual! Yeah?!!!!

There are guys in MTB where you wonder what they'll be doing in 10 years, but Cam is not one of them. I've always had a feeling that his personality would allow him continue on in this sport. Cheers to making it happen Cam!!

You look at another name on the C3 team - Andrew Shandro - and you get an idea that there's a group of guys who will successfully transition from racing/contests into a post-competitive mountain bike career. There's a handful of others but it seems like a tough road to take.

great to see Cam commentating is here to stay, remember hearing him at rampage a few years back and thinking 'this has to be a thing' as much as i love seeing him ride (his supermans are just gorgeous) he is also a talented commentator, which is needed in fmb.

keep riding the courses Cam, nothing better than commentary from someone who has actually ridden the course.

I'm torn between which place is cooler Canada or New Zealand...
  • 4 0
Both a really cool. Very similar landscape and people are all super friendly. Nz is just a bit smaller. I have lived in Nz and my brother in Canada, spend a lot in both.

bc but i wanna go to nz

NZ, but I want to ride in BC. Swap?

With complementary seasons if you're dedicated it seems like a no-brainer to do both!

But then you miss the Canadian Ski season

BC is 945000 square km. NZ is 268000. Kinda crazy how much space is in canada...

Don't get me wrong Cam's riding is rad and he is one of the sickest riders to watch, it's just that somehow all riding on those trails seem a bit tame after Brannigans ridiculous video that I'm sure everyone has seen...

I'm pretty sure Cam was riding Rude rock here, while George was riding Coronet Peak and Skyline bike park in his edit. So it's hard to compare really.
