I've been to New Zealand quite a few times, but believe it or not, I've never really had the opportunity to do as much riding there as I would like. My first few trips were littlered with injury / busy Nitro Circus Live tour schedules, so until this recent mission down there for Crankworx Rotorua, I hadn't had the chance to sample the amazing trails that you always hear about. I made up for lost time on this trip and was able to hit trails on both the North and South islands, and as it turns out, its not just hype... New Zealand's trails are a blast! - Cam McCaul |
I've been competing in slopestyle contests since 2003, and this year I made the decision to switch up my role in these events by hopping into the announcer's booth rather than having my name on the start list. I've always thought in the back of my mind that it would be cool to commentate slopestyle once I was done competing, and this year it just seemed like the time was right. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to announce all 3 stops of the Crankworx World Tour, and with one event already under our belt, I'm having a blast and excited for the next two. It was a completely different experience being at a slopestyle contest and not competing. I rode all of the practice sessions in Rotorua so that I would have a good understanding of the course flow and be able to make predictions of what the riders were planning. It's crazy how much more you notice when you're not stuck in your own little world trying to choreograph your own run. With the decreased stress levels, I was able to spend some time on my Slash exploring what Rotorua's local trail network had to offer. Harrison Mendel and I made our way to a place they call "The Redwoods" and to my surprise it had some terrain that was super similar to what I grew up riding in Aptos CA. Later on in the trip we found ourselves down in Queenstown riding some of those iconic South Island trails. It felt good to finally do some exploring in New Zealand, and I'm stoked we were able to put together this little trail vid to remember the trip. - Cam McCaul |

keep riding the courses Cam, nothing better than commentary from someone who has actually ridden the course.
