Cam Zink on Evil

by Tyler Maine
Cam Zink won the 2010 Monster Slopestyle at Kokanee Crankworx in Whistler, B.C., then he took the Red Bull Rampage and FMB Tour in Virgin, Utah. Now he's chosen Evil bikes for his 2011 season.

Moving into 2011 he's got a lot of new sponsors backing him, including his new ride, Evil Bikes. A bold move for Evil, an innovative brand that has delivered some incredible moments, as well as some serious controversy in a very short time.

Also new to camp Zink are Monster Energy, Contour, Osiris and Deft Family, while steady backers like SRAM, Deity, Oakley and Geax among others continue to carry Cam into the new decade. Here's the official word from Evil's head honcho Kevin Walsh, SRAM's Tyler Morland and Cam Zink himself on how 2011 is starting to shape up.

bigquotesThis marks chapter two in the book of Evil and I look forward to writing many new chapters with Cam as the star of this twisted romance novel. I have always been impressed by Cam, I mean who isn't? This guy should be on The Bachelor or something. Aside from the obvious, it's rare to find a guy who can 3 a 50 ft drop, yet be motivated, creative and business minded at the same time. If by some odd chance a female actually reads this which is highly unlikely, he is single, that's right!

But as I said before, he is the star of a romance novel so it won't be easy...I would like to think the best part about Cam is how perfectly aligned his personality and riding style are with the brand. He will play a big part in Evil part 2, and I look forward to the adventures the future has in store and getting him on a straight bike soon. Thanks for finally sending the grips Cam, they will look good on the new carbon Undead!
- Kevin Walsh, Evil Bikes

bigquotesWe were lucky enough to work with Cameron from the start of his career and from that start it was apparent that the "the crazy" eyes would never disappoint. From highs to lows he's part of the family and we will continue to ride the roller coaster that Mr.Zink is on. - SRAM MTB PR & Media manager Tyler Morland

bigquotesI'm stoked to see Cameron riding for Evil Bikes! I think they've got a great brand image that will fit right into Cameron's new relationship with Monster Energy...combining two brands that like to go big, supporting a rider that likes to go bigger should bring some excitement to 2011!! - Sean Heimdal, Monster

Cam's 2011 Sponsors:

Evil Bikes (new)
Monster Energy (new)
SRAM/Rock Shox
Troy Lee Designs
Mavic
Geax Tires
Contour Cameras (new)
Deity Components
Oakley
Sensus
Osiris (new)
SDG
Deft Family gloves (new)

bigquotesI feel more at home than I have in my whole career with my new sponsors. I have the most amazing group of loving sponsors and supporters backing me to help me live out my utmost potential. There are a ton of projects in the works with Freeride Entertainment and I couldn't be happier to start the year off filming and staying healthy before the contest season. The new help and support of Monster, Contour, Evil, Osiris and Deft Family will give me no excuses to accomplish everything I can dream up. ' Life is so good I can taste it in my spit.' -Layer Cake - Cam Zink

I know now why I rarely read PB comments. It's a bunch of snarky, retarded teenagers who think because they read forums they have insight into a companies financial status. Kevin and Evil are a good fit for Cam. First year bikes have issues, bikes have issues. Evil is working through them and Kevin is making sure that whatever issues were there before get corrected in the future.

OH MY f*ckING GOD. Leave it up to the haters.

This is another classic Martin Soderstrom thread. All you " Why would he do this " people, have some comon f*cking sense. Obviously Evil has an offer that Cam wants more than Corsairs. Leave it at that.

Cam is happy on Evil, and did not ask you for your opinions for his move. Shut up about it.

Great move as I'm concerned. I'd chose an Evil frame over a Corsair anyday.

I will sum this up as good as i can from what i know.

Cam didn't put corsair on the map, he did help them out though with his performance last season. From what i know cam was getting paid very little by corsair (if anything at all). Corsair changed ownership last season, they are in transition with new developments and just dont have the money to pay someone like cam. Evil lost vanderham and smith, i imagine cam is getting those two guys salaries combined. pretty hard to say no to that

Evil is finally getting their stuff together after having issues with their asian manufacturer, so expect them to FINALLY start getting product out there

Last summer there was proto concepts of a carbon revolt, who knows if that is the next thing out from them or if it was just an exercise.

Evil since the beggining has had a 5-6" trail bike as a proto, they showed it at interbike a few years ago and then nothing was heard about it again. with cam now on their team, that bike, or something similar perhaps made of carbon (hence the carbon undead) will need to be released or at least have him ride it at the slopestyle events. We will be seeing a trail/slope bike from evil in 2011, if its put into production or not is yet to be unseen

why do people dislike evil bikes so much? reading through these comments, it would appear that evil is some kind of sub-par brand that sell nothing worth buying.
i reckon they're quite underrated, personally, and signing up Zink will be a great thing for both sides

they have numerous frame issues, one being the tiny linkages have TONS of stress on them because of the leverage they get put under, which can only lead to one thing, snappage/bendage.

flag jezzah (Jan 27, 2011 at 4:34)
as has been said above, Evil have gained an incredibly bad rep over the last year due to frame failures / taking ages to get replacements out.

Also they currently have no bike suitable for slopestyle apart from the hardtail.. So bike wise corsair seemed more suited to what Zink rides. But hey, if he can make it work then go him..

I mean they only make one very expensive DH frame and a few hardtails. No other stuff that at least I know of.

Just looking at the latest BikeMag and it says the following about Evil and specifically the Revolt:
"There have been reliability issues with some of the Revolt frames, due to lapses in manufacturing quality control. The company has found a new vendor , and in 2011 we can expect to see the Revolt updated into a new carbon -frame DH bike that will be dubbed the Evil Undead".

It will be interesting to see what bike Cam will ride for slopestyle. Perhaps Evil will build a new SS bike or maybe they will tweak their all mountain rig to suit Cam for SS riding. http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/4119041/

Re: Evil Bikes. I have tried to place an order with Evil (for a 2011 Revolt) through one of my shops for 3 months. Virtual silence. Two things were communicated from Evil. 1. They were changing manufactures (as you know). 2. There were some family matters impacting things. At the end of the day (3 months), I simply could not wait for the sick bike I wanted to build. My money was screaming at me. I've put my money elsewhere with a keen eye on the Evil Undead and what it may bring. Evil is like a new stock. Hot IPO. Wild ride at first, but will it mature and grow or will it be relegated to the land of penny stocks and ultimately de-listed? Anybody's guess, but with Cam on board now, certainly worth paying attention to. (I still want a Revolt!)

I'm glad to hear Evil is getting back on track, I currently ride their first generation revolt frames and never had an issue with the frame. Guess I lucked out with a solid frame. Believe it or not, Evil has a 140mm full suspension frame in the works since 2009 "EVIL SECT" check out the link www.bikeradar.com/news/article/video-of-the-week-evil-bikes-sect-exclusive-23443 If the link doesn't work google search Evil Sect.

I heard a rumour the carbon frame may come out as early as spring 2011… Keep your chin up KW theirs light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Didnt we see steve smith on a aluminum hardtail, kinda 4x race type of thing, called "the omen" some time ago, i like evil, but... it just seems to me like they wernt ready to relaunch the brand yet when they did so 2 years ago, in my opinion they should have had the sovergin, faction, omen, revolt, sect, divison (apparently a 6"fr/mega style rig they talked about when the fist relaunched 2 years ago, but we havnt seen or heard anything a bar a small mention in the sect video from bikeradar) to me it just seemed like they lauched with a very small range, and then failed to get any of the new bikes we were promised out to keep people interested (sect/divison/omen) and failed to get the bikes they had released out on time and fault free.

They also havnt put anything new on their website for some time, i think more companys should take note of transition's web presence, they update reguarly, even if it's just a blog entry every week or two, there's always something to have a look at, evil have kept everything so under wraps about new bikes that they've lost all the hype and momentum they had as a brand.

Hopefully new ownership might sort this out and they can get back on it and turn evil into the brand we all got so excited about when we heard about a relaunch.

 Money.

I saw a show on TV a few years ago about football agents in the UK. The golden rule was "Always take the money". If Nike want to pay you twice as much as Adidas but their boots are shit, just take the money, buy some Adidas boots and make them look like Nikes.

In this case tell them what bike you want and they'll get someone to make it and put their stickers on it. Change the colour, dropout design and subframe shape and no one will be any the wiser...

Well the only mention it has of a new bike is the Undead carbon. As it is not many can afford the revolt frame but once you produce a carbon it boost the price even more. Either way I think Zinc will kill it no matter what, and I am sure he would not make the move if there was no talk of a SS bike for him in the works. I like his whole line up this year, cool to see what happens next.

I think Evil bikes look crap and have a crappy name. How many are they going to sell to religious folks and people who dislike music with guitars and grunting lyrics about sacrificing chickens and such? Obviously he signed with them because they are prepared to pay him more than anyone else. You've got to make hay while the sun shines in the world of pro sports. I would never buy one even if Nicole from Pussycat Dolls rode it naked down the Venice boardwalk and they showed said ride on TV every two minutes. I mean, they look crap. I'd just be looking at her cans, not the bike. I hope for them and the sport they do something about their crappy designs because not many people will be fooled into buying one just because of Cam Zink, but I could be wrong.

He's obviously good enough to make any bike work well for him, plus he can tell them what to make for him. I reckon they'll probably copy the Konig/Dominion design and paint it black in the hope no one will notice, or maybe pay Pablo a fat chunk of wedge to design something cool for them.
