One for the Record Books

On August 21st, 2014 Cam Zink successfully set a Guinness World Record for the longest dirt-to-dirt backflip on a mountain bike at Mammoth Mountain. Cam cleared a distance of 100 feet and three inches, which surpassed the current unofficial record of 78 feet that he set earlier this year. As a bonus, during practice Zink also claimed another world record for the longest straight air dirt-to-dirt jump, recording a distance of 119 feet and nine inches.

The cameras weight a lot, think about you, using them for 3 hours and you'll understand haha
  • 4 0
 Just for posture etc
  • 25 0
because they don't want to look fat. there's a reason why they say the camera adds ten pounds.
  • 3 1
 HAHAHA

 When in Rome…
  • 6 1
they are back supports and they help with not putting all the strain on your back for holding a heavy camera like that for so long
  • 64 1
That awkward moment when the camera crew has more body protection than the guy doing a 100ft backflip

Stewart is my favorite person now XD

Talked to a guy at work. He has never ridden a mountain bike and doesn't even know where to find the handlebars. He watched this last night and it blew his mind. This jump wasn't meant to impress the guys who ride every day - it was meant to blow the minds of a broader audience. He f*ing succeeded in doing both.

..great feat of bike technology and the huge balls of Mtbikers..
  • 28 3
That was flipping incredible let's be honest.
  • 20 1
 That flip was mammoth.

If you Zink this is going to be easy to beat then you have another thing Caming.
  • 5 0
 Ewww

Watched it live on Espn last night, they dragged out the coverage super long to build suspense, and in the end Cam made it look effortless. All the talk about how dangerous it is and he stomps it out like its nothing. So much respect for Zink! He is a legend for sure! Can't help but wonder now what he is going to bring to rampage this year. Going to be epic!

It was also very windy lucky we had a wind free window.
  • 14 0
My wife has a hard enough time with me racing occasionally for fun I think she would have a heart attack if I was skilled enough to go that big! Props to his fiancee for both being there for him and supporting him!
  • 1 0
she's usually in tears just before an event
  • 4 0
Because despite all the warning signs (just like every other gravity junky among us)...she's gonna marry him anyway. Gotta love her for it! Big Grin
  • 4 0
Yeah, she was a nervous wreck at Rampage last year. Seemed like every time I saw her before Zink did the flip of the Oakley sender, she was dying inside.
  • 10 0
Also, she was due like 4 days after Rampage, so that added to it I'm sure.
  • 15 2
Amazing. I know I'm setting myself up for negative props here but I was surprised to see that he wasn't wearing a neck brace (Leatt, etc.). It almost seems like a requirement these days for moto/snowmobile guys.
  • 7 1
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure he usually rides without one. So he probably wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it for such an important jump that requires total focus.
  • 9 1
i dont think it would make a difference if he landed on his head on a 100 foot jump haha..
  • 11 0
His level of confidence/comfort on that jump was probably way higher than the added security of having a Leatt brace on. Let's be honest here, this isn't nearly the craziest thing he's done as he's been practicing quite a lot and stomping many backies into the air bag prior to this. But I've always had a rule that pro riders or any other really good ripper can wear whatever the hell they want and is not anyone's place to tell them how to ride otherwise.
  • 12 1
 Dress for the ride
Not the crash
I'd think a neck brace would hinder being able to spot the landing?
  • 1 0
@nojzilla not going off of experience at all but I completely agree. maybe that camera guys back brace could have worked.
  • 6 0
maybe he gave all his safety gear away to the camera crew?
  • 6 1
As dumb as it sounds, this flip probably wasn't really all that dangerous for him. If he didn't pull it off, he would have been really close. That chances of him landing on his head were virtually zero. He was never going to mess it up that badly, to the point where the neck brace would matter.
  • 2 0
zink is as likely to land on his head flipping as a fish is to drown.
  • 2 0
No neg props here man, I never leave home without mine for the baby stuff.
  • 10 0
Amazing for sure, he just keeps pushing further and further... wow... Also, who's Kyle STRAIGHT?
  • 11 1
yeah, everyone knows it's Lyle Straight
  • 1 0
 Whoops
  • 12 1
 Norbs got robbed...
  • 3 2
@thinkbike, close but no cigar maight.

Not seen a photo that does this jump justice yet , allways an angle that makes it less impressive , where is the side on multi-shot !
  • 1 0
 HUGE !!!!!!!!
  • 14 6
I can't wait to see someone do a 110ft flip. Now that really will be something.
  • 8 1
do you want to get negative props?
  • 3 1
I live for the neg reps.
  • 1 0
 111 is where it's at.
  • 1 0
That really would be amazing to see.
  • 8 0
i am sure that YT are thrilled at not being mentioned as a sponsor. nice flip Cam
  • 8 1

Serious props to that dude, Rad level 10.

  • 3 0
you are just being fussy mate
  • 7 2
She's got a long body and she looks plenty healthy, not overly skinny at all... unless you're into the chubbies in which case, more power to you! Wink

I'd certainly like to feed her a sausage...

I am all for grotesquely large chested Caucasian women so I'll have to agree with you on this one.
  • 4 0
You've reached a certain level of badass-ness in life when Kyle Straight shows up to to ride around behind you with a camera strapped to his head.
  • 3 0
Damn you auto-correct! Strait, not Straight.
  • 3 0
Well, they are best friends.. If my friend wanted to do something like this I'd be his camera man too
  • 1 0
They stated the gap of this jump was 80 feet. And what he did was awesome, that goes without saying... But now, is everyone that over jumps something going to add the distance they went and not the actual gap? For instance if a drop is 10 feet and you land a foot into the sweet spot you didn't do an 11' drop, you just did the same 10 footer... A couple weeks ago at Highland, I hit the Big Bird jump which they say is 40', went super long, more than half way down the landing, it did not miraculously become a 60'...

Such a MTB hero, and cutest family ever. Could have done with out the 4 dancers there, but, cest la vie. Congrats Cam.
  • 1 0
The most beautfull pic when cam kisses his wife on the forehead. I really like it.
  • 1 3
Typical Zink fashion, big spectacle over not really a big deal. It's just reeeeeeally lame that no one has done this before. Not a big deal that it's finally happened now. Gotta give the dude credit though, he sure knows how to market himself to the masses. Congrats Cam, you're turning into the Robbie Knievel of MTB. Now all you need is the red, white & blue stars/stripes super hero suit & you'll be all set. You've already got the right attitude. :s

I think Zink's dad is looking for you.
