Sometimes the most challenging and arduous adventure is the one in your own backyard. The Colorado Trail links up the state’s largest metropolitan region with some of the best mountain bike trails in the country, spanning over 500 miles through the rugged and scenic alpine wilderness from Denver to Durango. Once summer rolls around, the trail clears of snow and those daring enough to attempt a through-ride set out into the unknown. This past summer a group of Colorado based Yeti Ambassadors set out to give it a go for themselves. Heading the charge was Olympic snowboard athlete Justin Reiter, along with good friends Craig Jones, Joey Schusler, and Sam Seward. The team encountered deep snow, high mountain passes, pristine single track, and views beautiful enough to convince you to never leave Colorado again. Averaging over 50 miles per day above 10,000 ft while carrying all of the gear needed to survive was exhausting. The days and miles passed. Some passed slower than others, and others passed too quickly. Adventures like this calm the mind, rekindle the simple love for riding, and will never be forgotten by those who experience them.

bigquotesThe first few days were eye opening. I don't think any of us thought it would be as hard as it has been so far, but we're finally settling into our pace and things are going much more smoothly. - Sam Seward

bigquotesWe've been riding for half an hour now, and it's official. We've gone 1% of the way, 5 miles. It's going to be one hell of a ride. - Justin Reiter

bigquotesBWe were slowly falling behind our daily goal of 50 miles a day. It was looking like we were destined to spend a few extra days out there, until on the 6th day we had a random boost of energy and were able to cover almost 80 miles and get back ahead of schedule. From that point on, we set our eyes on Durango and never looked back. - Justin Reiter

bigquotesYou don't really realize exactly what '500 miles' means until you are out there day after day. At 200 miles, I was feeling exhausted and having a hard time wrapping my head around another 300 miles. You just have to keep on trucking. - Joey Schusler

bigquotesThe ASRc has been the perfect bike for the job so far. Light and nimble, but still a nice smooth ride. You really get to know a bike well when you're riding it for 8 hours a day, day in and day out. - Sam Seward

bigquotesIt's a scorcher of a day out here and we haven't been able to find water for the last 20 miles. You really have to think ahead and plan wisely when you're out here on the trail. - Craig Jones

The Colorado Trail is a must do for any Colorado rider. It's simply amazing what this state has to offer.

Beautiful video and stills guys. What an ambitious journey...Curious if there was help along the way? You have to think there would be unexpected issues to deal with over 500 miles such as mechanicals, and obviously health concerns. That ride would test any bike, not to mention lightweight carbon XC rigs. And yes, I ride Yetis too!

My wife and I were in Durango summer before last, and had Hermosa Tours shuttle us up to Kennebeck Pass. We rode the last 20 miles of this trail back to town and for us, that was plenty epic! We are flatlanders from Texas admitted, but I'll have to tell you when we encountered a brown bear up the hillside from us it was quite spooky, and exhilarating! That's something you just don't see where we live...

Thanks @keithrad We didn't have any help along the way what so ever, and were fully self supported. We got super lucky with health concerns, other than the fact that Sam had to bail out half way due to knee issues. We were also quite lucky when it came to mechanicals. Not one flat tire over 500 miles! And the ASR and ARC both held there own incredibly well. That last 20 miles off Kennebec is incredible. One of my favorite sections of trail! Cheers.

@keithrad That's pretty cool that you saw a brown bear that far south. I don't think that a population is officially recognized in Colorado yet
  • 1 0
I was referring to it's color, not species. It could have been purple, still scared the daylights out of us;-)
  • 1 0
Oh, fair enough. Seeing a bear regardless of colour is always cool

Stuff like this is why I come to pinkbike.

I am interested in how they got around the wilderness areas? At least one segment of the trail goes through the Lost Creek Wilderness and mechanized travel is not allowed.

There are 5 wilderness detours along the trail bypassing 6 different wilderness areas. The CT book and databook are extremely detailed and have all the info you need on the detours. The CTR website is also a big help. www.climbingdreams.net/ctr

When you do the CT there is a guide they sell for bike route detours. Although it changes almost every year so always buy the latest guide if you're gonna go out there!! I plan to practice on the cataract ridge segment before tackling more!!

Yup, the Colorado Trail Foundation has a great datebook that gives you all the needed info to make the wilderness detours.

Thank you, and trust me, there was more than one time I considered ditching the camera gear...

Looking at those photos makes me want to take a few weeks out of my year to dedicate to something like this.

 Bucket list item for sure...

Amazing pics. I just barely touched some of the CT during our Monarch Crest ride and would love to explore more of it in the future. Looks like enough snow and streams to keep hydrated with a filter except for that 20 mile stretch that was mentioned? That is never a comfortable feeling. Great write up Yeti Tribe!

Amazing video! One day I hope to do a ride like this.

Awesome! would be great to do a trek like that. they must of had someone meeting them along the way I guess? I would need a trailer full of cliff bars to do 500 miles

The point of the CT is too pass through a lot of towns so you get a full tour of CO. Plenty of opportunities to restock although that doesn't mean it's a cake walk Wink

We were able to stop in small towns along the way that were near the trail. Our main resupply points were Breckenridge, Leadville, Salida, and then its a long long push down to Silverton and then finally the finish in Durango.

How the heck did they not get swamp ass from 500 miles in a limited rotation of bike shorts?

Anyone know who makes those frame bags?
  • 3 0
The frame bags are from Revelate Designs. Best bikepacking bags out there hands down.

I have made that push up from Peaks to the Wheeler in the early season (July) snow and it's brutal. I think it took us 4 hours to make the 6 miles to Copper.
