Commencal Absolut Max Max - Atherton Edition

by Simon Paton
Mar 8, 2010

These have just hit the UK shores and are hitting the trails as we speak. No surprise at under £400.00 it's ticking a lot of boxes.

To see how big a bang you get for your bucks, stand back and open with caution..

Available in limited numbers featuring Atherton racing inspired graphics, the ethos around the bike hasn’t changed since the introduction of the original Max Max a few years ago – a tough, affordable and easily upgraded introduction in the world of dirt jumping, I'll even add 4x racing.

This point is emphasized by the use of the exact same 6061 T6 aluminum frame that is featured on all the higher-spec Absolut 1&2 full bikes.

The new frame features arguably the most versatile dropouts on the market, allowing the use of a rear derailleur and pretty much all rear 135mm hub standards on the market (10mm, 12mm, 12mm Maxle or Singlespeed hubs) via the modular hanger/dropout system.

The bike also features Commencal’s new dirt fork which replaces the heavier 5pc fork used in previous year’s models, helping to drop weight.

Price: £399.99srp
Frame: Absolut AL with new 2010 dropouts.

Fork: NEW Commencal Dirt Fork (1, 1/8”)
Headset: Tange Fatty MX2 (1,1/8”)
Stem: Commencal FR 50mm oversize
Bars: Commencal 6061 Oversize Riser (2” rise)
Grips: Commencal Kraton
Brakes: Commencal V-Brakes
Bottom Bracket: Truvativ Howitzer
Cranks: Truvativ Ruktion
Chain: KMC
Rims: Alex Rims DM18 (26”)
Hubs: Commencal 6-bolt disc Front & Rear (8/9sp freehub) 14mm nutted.
Spokes: Stainless Steel 72p (3X lacing)
Seatpost: Commencal Hi-Ten Steel (black)
Saddle: C Trail by Velo
Sizes: Short or Long
Colour: Atherton Blue

cheaper version of a 09shonkey if u ask me
flag adrenalinaddict (Mar 8, 2010 at 14:07)
Looks very good, love the graphics tup but V-Brakes? Come on guys! At least throw in Disc Brake compatible hubs! An Avid BB5 costs about £15 to buy in bulk! You would need to spend at least another £150 for wheels and Brakes that would be more suitable Frown Other than that, Love it! Big Grin
flag adrenalinaddict (Mar 8, 2010 at 14:14)
Apologies, didn’t read that the Hubs were Disc compatible, The images looked otherwise, Still if it comes with Rotor and Calliper mounts, why not fit a basic Disc Brake? So my point still stands Smile

'Hubs: Commencal 6-bolt disc Front & Rear (8/9sp freehub) 14mm nutted.'
The hubs are compatible with discs. I agree though, a set of avid mechanicals would have topped it off to be an unbeatable budget bike.
Colour looks sweet too.

Sorry Beat you to it with the correction, my mistake though. But the point still stands Smile
flag mtnbker395 (Mar 8, 2010 at 14:42)
it's not really cheap. 400 quid is actually pretty up there for a bike without any suspension or even disc brake compatible wheels...
flag AC-92 (Mar 8, 2010 at 14:49)
i dont get what this bike is it looks kinda street so why is it g*y aluminium?
flag cozmo91 (Mar 8, 2010 at 15:53)
 what makes aluminium g*y?
flag E-Walk (Mar 8, 2010 at 16:40)
Maybe, accept for the fact that kona is shit and commencal is amazing
flag NWray (Mar 8, 2010 at 17:19)
he is saying g*y alum because it has a rigid fork on it, quite dumb if u ask me (rigid for on alum fram)
flag masonkona (Mar 8, 2010 at 17:31)
kona isn't shit. yeah i ride one, but if you think of it, i would say kona has more expertise in making a jump/street bike. They have 6 TOP riders on there clump team. Legends, newcomers, and some wild spanish kid (andreu) who all give feed back on their slope, street, and jump bikes, to have them refined to the best possible angles, geo, material, and funtionalliy possible. Yeah maybe commencial has somthing on them for DH, but deffinitly not on DJ/SS. Which this hardtail would be consitered.

really, i say f*ck kona haters
flag curlxupxandxdle (Mar 8, 2010 at 20:06)
do i see pegable mountain bike?!
flag bigdan30 (Mar 8, 2010 at 20:15)
I disagree. Pro's are there for publicity. They do help refine geometry a bit, but its almost entirely in the hands of designers. And I think Kona's designers have been asleep on the job for the last several years.
Kona's bikes have hardly changed in the last decade. For DJ, they have got boring bikes that look the same way they did 5 years ago. They are not at all innovative (case in point: DOPE System). I know that if you have a good design you should stick with it, but you have to evolve with the sport. And in my mind, one new bike (the Bass) doesn't cut it.

flag dmrchris (Mar 9, 2010 at 9:30)
mason kona.... the words kona and street shouldnt go together! who rides street on a kona?! ha!
flag DJPrOdigy (Mar 9, 2010 at 13:30)
i think part of the kona hating is that, they have a reputation for snapping at the headtube. because people fit them with a long-ass fork and expect it not to break. correct me if im wrong.
flag rider89sb (Mar 9, 2010 at 16:51)
 DJPrOdigy well put my friend...

flag masonkona (Mar 9, 2010 at 17:59)
kona's shonky, and shonky inc is an amazing frame. It basically has all the same feautures, and geo as a black market mob. and for dmrchris, many people ride the shonky for street. Take when goss for example. He is on the kona shonky inc frame, made from reynolds cromo, and he seems to be doing just find on it. Andreu lacondeguy has his own frame on production now, the lacondeguy. The frame is very similar to the shonky inc, but it however does not have the internal campy 45/45 style headset. The geometry on it is amazing, both for street, and dj. I beleive that the kona bass (former cowan ds) and the new bass design (different tubing/more room for bigger crowns) is a proven SS machine, it has won crankworks multiple times, and is a multi-venue bike, used for FR, SS, Steet, and DJ. If you watch the Dr. Dew files episode on konaworld about the Cowan frame, it explains what i mean by rider input. It isnt an act there putting on by the way...

flag masonkona (Mar 9, 2010 at 18:02)
and i would say the designers have been quite awake, look at 06/07 stuff, compair it to 2010 stuff. Much nicer in design. Yeah same 4 bar linkage design on the DS bikes.. but its a good proven design.
flag AC-92 (Mar 9, 2010 at 18:11)
alu street frames break so often which is why you only get steel bmx frames for street dirt ect and it just doesnt feel nice at all compared to steel theres not enough flex.
this bike isnt for the serious rider...

and they have been making peg-able mtb's for years
flag curlxupxandxdle (Mar 9, 2010 at 19:24)
yeah they have been making pegable mtbs for years but not as much so as non-pegable its nice to see one getting some publicity as for the aluminum/ steel debate do you really feel the difference in the frame flexxing when you land something in the street? im gonna have to say no... if anything thats your knees/ tire your feeling
flag ChadVoos (Mar 9, 2010 at 21:04)
in the first place konas are g*y i have an 06 scrap and im still riding it. the geometry is screwed up but i would say its bin prety dependable ive bin riding it for 4 years and it hasnt broke yet and i ride street, djs, park and prety much everything
flag AC-92 (Mar 11, 2010 at 15:37)
you dont feel it when you land something because that would just be worrying.
dont insult your kona because it my decide to snap next time you ride it
flag curlxupxandxdle (Mar 11, 2010 at 17:11)
exactly you dont feel the flex of a frame... the miniscule amount if any that it does... so why does a more flexy or less flexy frame matter, ok the more flexy can take more because it wont put all the stress on the welds... but o well even with a stiff ass frame if you break a weld you aint riding right lol, im not arguing im just curious if there is any real reason besides that someone cares about flex in a frame so much when they really shouldnt

flag tzrredrocket (Mar 8, 2010 at 14:28)
The brakes a let down, but then again for £400 RRP (so it may be sold cheaper in the shops) its a very good price for younger riders who ride small local trails and jumps. Its obvoiusly not aimed at the older rider with blue graphics and a name like the "max max". For the price and target market i think its perfect.

I wouldnt be seen dead with one though Big Grin

flag almightybenners (Mar 9, 2010 at 5:13)
yeah it isn't even ti... Rolleyes

modular dropouts on FRAMES less than 400 quid are rare and seeing as all the parts apart from the frame are basically designed to be replaced its a pretty damn good deal. also the white rigid fork will be pretty easy to sell on to some trend whore kid and you could buy a decent second hand sus fork for it with the money.

It doesn't look like anyone put a whole lot of thought into this bike. It has a cool paint job and fills a gap in the market. cool....
