Yep, they roll fast and grip pretty well for the weight but I've deformed at least 3 sidewalls just pumping through berms. They warrantied several but at this point it's not even worth the hassle. I'm going back to maxxis.
Same "Conti Whompus" experience here - I've broken five casings on Trail Kings and Mountain Kings. I'm done with the brand for good. These tires should have a weight rating. All of the other failures I've heard of were under larger riders.
I heard trail kings used to be very good. But the ones that came on my bike were terrible! Good grip when your really weighted them under speed but slower speed stuff or off camber was a struggle. And they didn't roll too well.
I like der kaiser projects and mud kings a lot! By far the best DH tyres I've used. But I was disapointed with the trail kings. One thing I did like was the side walls! I never had a flat with them despite running really low tyre pressures through the winter
I haven't had any issues with mine - never a deformation either. So far this entire season I've gone no flats with QBP DH tubes. Has been great when I get squirrelly on heavy landings. They've saved my ass and stomped a lot of park and trail rides for me!
@AutumnMedia All of the TKs and MKs I used were the top-spec ProTection/Black Chili UST models (set up tubeless as well). I'm really bummed that they failed because the grip was very, very good, and the 2.4 size is a great match for my riding. I avoid running tubes but it stands to reason that these tires with DH tubes would have more structure to them, and be less likely to fail.
I am testing in the moment the new Baron Projekt 2.4 and the Kaiser Projekt in 26". Petty amazing tires. Grip is perfekt an Rolling resistance really ok. Test in riva, morzine and here in germany. I found my new tires! If i have many km i change rear to x-King protection.
They are like the Magic Mary in 2.35. the Baron Projekt looks bit smaller. The rubber shore is like the old baron 2.3 or the mud king. The Baron projekt work awesome in all conditions. Before the new Conti tires i ride Magic Front and nobby 2015 rear.
Loved the video! So cool seeing trails in my own back yard that I haven't ridden. It's weird around here because there are like 30 "off menu" trails that are truly awesome but are technically illegal. There is a don't ask, don't tell, don't ticket truce, but STRAVA junkies are publicizing their rides, forcing the hands of those charged with enforcing regulations and laws. Turn off your damn STRAVA and enjoy the awesome. If you want a medal for riding I 'll have one engraved for you. Oh and props to T-Wrex for the drone work on that video. Go easy on that cactus, Schleyer!
It's time they start producing/selling them Projekt tires (der Baron en der Kaiser) in 27,5". They've been testing them for almost 2 years now. Still no proper Enduro/DH tire in 650b Come on Conti!!
so - where is the 29er Trailking Protection Apex 2.4 (in Black Chili please - so far only lousy Asia versions available)... Oh and still out waiting for 29er der Kaiser Projekt too... (even though a 29er Der Baron 2.5 would trump them all).
nice video edit, and great scenery!Damnn cactus would scare the crap out of me about getting a puncture. It looks to damn hot to fix a flat tire out there with no shade :-)
Don't tell anyone, but the daytime highs on those particular trails have been in the mid 70s this July (what is that, 23.948 degrees Canadian?). It's coastal, so it stays cooler than it looks. Think I'll go get some this morning! I promise not to skid.
Wazzap with swedish hard rock not getting credits? Oh, I have this patented superquadruple layer special tire design with a new liscensed bead lock technology patents and copyrights all over the place, I am a big company that just don't £${€^~^€€€ about musicians
Perhaps they paid for its use, hence no credit. I often wonder about the music used in mountain bike vids. Using popular or well known music in videos is difficult to get permission for and can be very expensive - for instance that Buffalo Springfield in the Brandon Semenuk unReal segment would (I would think) be hella expensive to use, and I'd bet the publishers are very litigious and quick to jump on any unauthorised usage. But when you hear, like, She Sells Sanctuary in a BDS edit (think I heard it there but not certain, so don't jump on me!) surely they can't be paying full price for that? Or are they just taking the chance that it won't be heard and running with it until they get a C&D?
I reckon the combination of video and song is ode enough to the artist. I don't think a flash of the artist's name at the end would have added anything to the effect of the spot-on music choice anyway. If someone wants to know who wrote the tune (me for example) it's easy enough to find out. Conti would not take any chances and will have paid full copyright to the artist. Tiny youtubers with next to no subscribers shiver in their boots at the prospect of using copyrighted music in their videos, so Continental will not be 'taking chances'.
