Those knee pads need more padding on the top of the knee, mountain bikers fall forwards during crashes, the impact tears through the straps and fabric into the top of the knee.
  • 2 1
yea I agree, thats a bit strange, as their knee guards were never good with staying on knee. They are just light and super comfy.
  • 6 0
There are three different type of knee/shin pads; the Performance, the Racing Extreme and the standard Racing guard. The Performance has a third polyproylene plate, that sits above the knee so that should the knee pad slip (as they often do) the top plate will replace the knee plate. So the option of extra coverage is there.

no matter what I still prefer my 661 Pro Pressure Suit and Race Knee/Shin guard.
quality is the same (or even better) and the price is 2-3 times lower than Dainese.
  • 3 2
The greatness of Dainese lies in their back protection, how well ventilated it is. I agree 661 PRO Pressure suit is excellent, but not as good. Yes Dainese is expensive, but not 2-3 times more. Only rich wankers buy it at MSRP in Europe...
  • 1 1
I mean at least Polish Dainese distributor has stupid prices. Just look around on ebays, online stores and you find one under 400E. instead of dealers asking price going over 500
  • 2 4
Man,come on,661 costs something around 160 Euros and Dainese as U said something around 500 Euros-it means that Dainese is more than 3 times more expensive product. I bought my Pro pressure Suit for less than 110 Euros,so what the hell??
U wanna convince me that it's really worth spending so much more money on something that has similiar quality??
Don't get me wrong, but the ventilation is not most important in back protection. There's no armor as ventilated, that will not make U sweat when wearing it. For me personally it makes no difference if I'm going to be drenched in sweat after 5 o 10 minutes of ride.
In my opinion most important thing is that both products meats the same protection standards.
And the other very valuble thing is how many people ride in the specific protection, and what can they say about it. Personally,I don't know any rider using Dainese stuff,so in my opinion it means there's something wrong with their stuff.
Maybe it's not the quality, but relation between price and quality.
661 all da way!! Smile

When I was buying my armour, I looked at both the dainese and the 661 pro pressure suit. I took both of them, and tried to flex the back. The 661 folded back like paper, but the dainese wouldn't flex back. THAT is why dainese costs more. My back is worth that extra money.
  • 2 0
Yup, dainese back protection is worth every money

Safety gear= priceless. Can't put a price on my mobility and independence. I don't want to be stuck in a wheelchair.
  • 3 1
well lets dont over do it. You can't consider your body armor or helmet or leatt brace as something saving you from a wheelchair. You can't put that much trust on those things. I mean if you find yourself in such unfortunate situation where you can break your back while wearing 661 armor, you would probably end up the same in Dainese. There is not that much difference. That kind of situation would have been a very hard fall and I don't think Dainese would save you either. Just ride responsibly and if you can afford it, buy and wear as good body protection as possible as often as possible.

There is also an issue of trust that I mentioned. Everytime I ride in armor, I crash more often than I ride without it (I always wear helmet, knee pads & back protection though) than when I ride without it. Perhaps its the matter of little bit limited movement, but I believe also because, I trust that armor that I can just jump of the bike and not much will happen to me. Its not that i am thinking about while im in a close call situation, it just plays in the back of my head and triggers less appropriate reactions.

I find it very wrong when I see people riding all mountain in body armors. It's this urge to feel safe. No one can feel safe, you can have your brake cable ripped of by a stupid branch, then screwed into the front wheel there you fly to land on your neck. Wearing armor on easy trails is like telling to yourself before the ride: I will crash. And if that thought is somewhere there in your head, trust me you will crash. You also can't be a better rider because you wear body armor, so when you try to go faster and faster it will save you so you think thatnks to that you will learn faster.

I very much disagree with you waki, check out the broken riders section in photos and see all the young kids that were not wearing armor because it wasn't fashionable, I guarantee you that the permanent damage some of those kids have suffered hold them back from being better rider far more than a set of leggings or a pressure suit. I understand that not everyone needs armor but I wish some riders would try to set a better example for the younger riders. I figure once a big name rider gets hurt in a really bad way everyone's opinion on protectives will change....

I meant: Wear as much and as good body armor as possible, but without overdoing it. Overdoing safety in life is nearly as dangerous as lack of taking any precautions. Most of all: ride responsibly as no body armor will protect a person against his own stupidity. If you want to train to be at WCup level you need to accept the fact that anytime during riding at nearly unforgiving speed you are only hours from the hospital where they will tell you, or your family while you are in Coma that you might never walk again. your family must also accept it that everytime you go for ride, you might not be back and they might need to go to hospital to hear the statement from previous sentence.

Kids not wearing an armor. Well in MTB I dont see it as such a big problem, because most idols wear those fancy halmets and knee/shin guards with cool stickers. SO well its cooler to have Sam Hill monster energy fface helmet than not have anything. Problem is in BMX Dirt/street world cuz magazines show pics with PROs riding without a helmet.

And after all the bigest problem with kids not wearing any armor or helmet is that you cant do anything but to tell them to wear something until they finaly listen to you. If you see a kid on dirt jumps without a helmet just tell him to get out of here until he brings a helmet. You are older and he will be affraid of you, even if he shout from the distance f*** you. After some time he will listen. Fortunately in bike parks they dont let kids on lift if they dont have necessary body protection.

Dainese body armor is The Armor! It's like 5.10 shoes, TLD helmets, it's in a class of its own. At the same time I totaly don't understand this cartoon back protection looks a bit awkward... their other Back armor (same as in this body armor) is the best one ever made, and kill me if Im wrong. Nothing comes close. It's light, low profile, comfy and super ventilated. Sometimes I take it on XC rides.

That's what the body armor should be comfy and reliable so you wear it because you like it. Just wear it on and forget. Unfortunately most companies struggle with that.

Check out IXS body armour, Ive tried both and wouldnt change from IXS now!
  • 3 1
what? IXS is heavier and burlier. I havent tried it but it just seems as... a body armor. Dainese is almost a second skin.

my Rockgardn body armor's been through hell and back, 5+ years and still going strong

OK some of you have some questions.
1.)The helmet is AGV's new AX-8 Carbon composite shell MX helmet.
2.)It is DOT approved
and weighs 2 lbs.
3.)The weight is that of the Dainese D-RAPTOR downhill helmet.
4.)Has pull out washable liner.
At this time they have AMA riders Millsaps and Pastrana and a few others using
this helme. It is in testing I beleive at this time, but is due out soon.AGV also has it's other new MX helmet, the MT-X which is made of HIR-TH(high resistant thermoplastic)resin, and is 3 lbs. and is out now.
As far as the cost of DAINESE mtb gear goes it is more, but one thing all should remember none of the armor is made in China,Tiwan,or Vietnam like all the others.
This product is made to FIT AND WORK WITH THE BODY as some of the smater pepole that commented know.
If you want to put a price on protection for your body,My price is DAINESE!!

Finally Dainese does some customer relations. As someone mentioned above, their stuff is in a class of its own, but their communication is as well, except at the other, crappy end of the spectrum. My Dainese armoured shorts are probably my favorite bit of armour, saved me who knows how many times. My jacket is wicked as well.
  • 3 0
white mesh? I don't know if this really was such a good idea..
but I like the flat shoulder protectors, they don't appear as bulky as the Gladiator Evo's.
  • 2 1
Sorry AloxT, your wrong about no one else having that kind of quality - and i don't care if the gear last ten years, i want something that has comprehensive coverage, and I last 10 years, so... Dainese Schmainese Mayonnase...overpriced, and like almost everything out there, no real rib protection [ not just the front but floating ribs, and hello! ribs curve right around the body! ] not to mention the soft tissue on shoulders above the hard outer shoulder - so many endos and slams affect these 2 almost always neglected areas...SO, check out www.skeletools.com INEXPENSIVE, LIGHTWEIGHT, and FULL coverage, AND, every single piece of protection on it can be tweeked [ removed, replaced, and added to ] for a customized fit, including the use of a Liatt Brace! Both myself, and my son wear them, and i have had enough slams to tell you: THEY WORK. and Skeletools is NOT a corporate rip-off company using their name to charge triple what they should for something that cost them peanuts to manufacture; Skeletools is a cottage industry owned and run by a biker family man who is accessible, honest and rides...enjoy your Dainese, but just because you have never tried anything else doesn't mean there are not other better products out there...and i wonder, if you have had your D gear for 10 years, how much riding do you do, because NO ONE who shreds for real has a piece of gear that will hold up that long... just the smell alone would have it rotting off your back. hey, just wondering. happy trails AloxT.
  • 1 0
I just checked out the site and their stuff looks like it does the job, Ive had Dianese, 661 and currently use IXS, however the skeletools seems to have a better rib and side protection and I like the strap style protection over the shoulders, seems pretty logical for both safety and comfort. Well just to say thanks for the link and I will be seriously considering the company when I replace my current jacket, and it definitely wont be in ten years!!!!
  • 1 0
sl...i will tell you, that Skeletools is not the hardest body armor out there but it is sufficient for most BD trails if you don't hug a tree at 60 mph [ which in that case most gear will be useless anyway ]...i too have wore 661 and even Beastgear [ gnarly looking gear that would scare the poo out of 'Freddy Kruger'! ] and my preference is for something like Skeletools that has well thought out and decent protection without the absurd storm trooper look, AND, is light enough that i don't wrap myself around a tree because: the gear i am wearing is so heavy and hot, i crash from wearing this kind of 'protection' when i lose focus due to heat exhaustion...and by the way, even with the Skeletools body armor, i tweeked it by adding a 5"x4"x3/4" piece of foam with a thin layer of plastic then velcroed it to the chest - i have had a sternum injury and nothing can describe the pain - i was terrified of sneezing for months! but all in all, this is the best body armor for the $
  • 1 0
Well thought out would preclude ZIPPERS. I refuse to even look at body armor which employ zippers or gaps down the center of the chest.
  • 1 0
yep, i have to agree this is a flaw with any gear w/ zips down the center: too easy to get a bash on the area [ zipper] not protected [ i slammed into a rock w/ 661 Armour with side closer and a reasonable chest guard and still knocked the crap out of my sternum - hate to think of how much worse with a center zip ] but i did a velcro improv w/ a chest protector attachment on my Skeletools and hope i don't have to see it ever work :-) !
  • 2 2
Dainese is no better than any of the other body armour. Just because they were one of the first and one of the priciest doesn't mean its better. The only real protection from any of these suits is the spine protector. The shoulders might save you from a scrape or two, but that's it.
  • 2 0
I have had mine for almost 4 years using it for downhill and motocross and is still going good.
  • 1 0
PS. Apocalyptic looking gear is a real danger to others, because when they see you wearing it they could easily die laughing :-)
  • 1 0
Really? Then why does my apocalyptic armor get me girls phone #'s? I must be doing the look right.
  • 1 0
Is that all it takes?! Seriously though, i don't give a donkeys brey about the 'look', i wear whatever works for the protection, and the girls i see [ that ride ] especially in Whistler, tend to 'look' at guys w/ mega body armour as dweebs and beginners...but hey, again, whatever works eh...my take is, i don't need a 'look' to get a gal cause i'm way too ugly - ok i'm kidding, i already have a babelicious and she chose me because i'm not a poser with a look and can shred w/ her...not pointing any fingers, but still, if she ever dumps me i will put on my old apocalyptic Beast Gear and see if you are right :-)

sorry, I'll stick to companies I've actually heard of.
  • 15 1
^@Mtnbker395 - You should do a little research then as Dainese are pretty much the originators of cycling protection as you know it today. Pretty much everything they started with was been replicated by others over the years.
  • 2 0
Cool stuff, with cool accent! Guess I'm buying one now!
  • 2 0
does anyone know what model helemt that is? looks amazing!
  • 2 0
Dainese purchased AGV helmets in 2007 so it's an AGV AX-8 helmet. Currently it's not available in the US but it will be soon. Davi Millsaps and Travis Pastrana are currently wearing them as well as French lites rider Gauiter Paulin.
