How tough must it be for Rob Warner to not comment on the size of Danny's balls? I miss his carefree commentary from Freecaster. Ironically, it must be said the red bull clipped Rob's wings.
  • 119 3
Indeed. For the youngsters out there who may not be familiar with Mr Warner's previous inimitable commentating efforts pre RedBull, may I draw your attention to a casual remark during one of Danny Hart's own WC runs from a few years ago: *screaming* "HE WANTS THIS MORE THAN AN OUT OF WORK RAPIST"

I rest my case your Honour.

@ruckusrider74: You are right, I just went back to the video and there is no helmet camera.
I was so excited that didnt even look.

Does anyone notice that Danny's posture on the bike is more forward and open at the hips as compared to other riders - more "moto". I find it interesting no one has mentioned that. My guess is it allows for more "skeletal" support (more relaxed) leaving more energy for the big moves. Kind of like PSIA skiing. Any-who, just thinking out loud.
  • 8 1
hes a smaller guy. i wonder, check out troy's posture. i always thought troy leans back a bit more but now i wonder.
  • 11 2
Everyone will still not buying Mondraker but size up their already sized up bike.
  • 3 1
Surely some of that has to do with his size.
  • 23 0
@dbendixen: having your hips a bit more open definitely allows the bike to travel and manoeuvre under you, but it also leaves you more room to get all washed out. His ability to hold on and skip through some of the roughest sections was the difference after watching almost 100+ racers between the mens and women field. You could see he was pulling up ever so slightly to get above the deep holes and with speed was literally skimming over the tops of the rocks. It was a very impressive technical piece of riding, he didn't even really look out of control. The sheer speed he maintined over the rocks was insane though, just crazy good.
  • 7 5
small+light = low center of mass.
He can crush on the bike on steep section instead of moving his body over the back wheel.
  • 6 0
I was also thinking he looked different on his bike than most riders, but I just put it on the account of Mondrakers geo. But he definitely has very good technique - someone should do an in-depth piece about it.
  • 8 2
@inonyme: small and light helps but look at florent payet who was 3rd... Pretty tall, Greg minaar, gee Atherton, Steve peat arent exactly miniature either
  • 19 0
@inonyme: small and heavy would create lower centre of mass, like me, the next world champ! .... Ok maybe not.
  • 1 0
@chyu: Not many Mondrakers here in the states.
  • 7 0
Comparing World Champion Danny Hart to PSIA is like comparing Marcel Hirscher to IMBA.
  • 19 1
This position surely has to do with the size of his balls. With balls this big, he must lean more forward and keep his legs open. He still feels so uncomfortable in the racing kit, that he wants to finish asap and that's where the advantage comes from Smile

@nwtoney55 - you certainly didn't come here for a fruitful discussion about bike skills. Everyone's a pro bro here, they don't share their secrets. They don't race world cups because they chose to. I cannot ride as well as Pinkbike bros or setup my bike as perfectly as they can, so I can only assume things. Being forward gives the bike plenty of range of movement. He keeps the gun loaded all the time and can lunge the bike from under him quickly which must be helpful on such steep track. Also his bike has a huge front end which means he must work a bit more on keeping traction on his front wheel as compared to let's say Minnaars V10. Minnaar sits on the front a lot, he works a lot with his arms, he's always looking like his torso floats over everything and allows the bike to smoothly roll through everything. He does nit fight with the bike, what's mire he seems to help it. Extremely smooth. Troy hangs off the back a bit but he is a kangaroo on the track, he hucks stuff, jumps more than most, so he probably keeps it ready for gapping rocks or roots. Notice how tall is minnaar riding, legs fully extended very often, he just sucks everything with his long arms and legs. Danny has to deal with each bump tossing him upwards more.

I don't know I suck. I'm not a bro.
  • 4 0
The Training Company in which he trained for this Season is mostly specifically for Motocross, also he is riding moto sometimes, so thats definitely an influence there.
  • 3 0
@Samplidude: He has been working hard with the sports science dept at John Moore's University in Liverpool over the last year or so. He say himself that this and concentrating on his diet and fitness have been a major factor in his recent upturn of form.
  • 13 0
I think it's down to fitness and strength. Good posture comes from having a good core strength. He's not winning WC's because he leans a bit more forward or opens his legs 3cm's wider than the next guy... I've always admired Danny's posture, and I've always said he just looks so much stronger than everyone else, but it's nothing new. Just watch him out the start gate on some of the races, he puts in more peddle strokes and peddles harder than everyone else. He visibly looks more pinned. And he can peddle more than others because he's fitter. At the end of the day it comes down to who wants it the most, and evidently right now Danny wants it the most. He is the man putting in the most effort at the gym and he is the man spending the most time tuning his bike.

@Jack-McLovin: that also means quality rest. He must be good at resting, it's easy to work hard, it's hard to work smart... As to wanting it most I am pretty sure there have been at least 5 lads on that hill who could live up to this statement. Brosnan, Minnaar, Gwin. They know the second is the first of the losers. One thing is sure, Danny joined a very exclusive club of guys who went through a rough injury and came back. Even Sam Hill or Fabien Barel haven't managed to do that. It's probably ahead of Gwinny and Gee is going through that ATM. There were a couple if very fast guys before they took a serious banger. I guess Minnaar is the best of the fallen heroes.
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: I still stick to my statement that he who wants it more will win, it's simple really. Just because there's multiple people who want to win, it doesn't mean they all want it the same amount. It has to be down to fitness. If you can peddle and pump your bike just as hard at the end of the race as you were at the start, you're onto a winner.
  • 21 0
@WAKIdesigns: Hey, waki, i sometimes have trouble working out if you're a c#nt or not. But i think that is what you want.
  • 9 0
 @piersgritten: certainly Greg. He's not minaarture..................................ahem.
  • 1 1
 @krazieghost: you call a 1,78cm guy smaller....ok!!!!
  • 1 0
@Jack-McLovin: agree..he is also the guy that on saturday made the last and most accurate track walk at 7pm..
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: Sam won worlds after his first shoulder injury....
  • 1 0
Him and Gwin are the same height (5'10"). I think he just runs a big frame.
  • 3 1
Can we talk about mondraker geometry for a sec? Their enduro bikes are certainly long af, but the Summum seems to be pretty traditionally sized: 422 reach for medium, 442 for large. why is everyone referring to the long geometry in hart's context?
  • 2 0
@b26-4-Life: Because Danny Hart rides a custom XL and it's freaking long.

Everybody always talks about how much stability a super long bike provides but when watching Dans run it looks to me like his bike skips around laterally a lot more than any others.
  • 2 0
@b26-4-Life: Not sure where you're going here.

The point of Forward Geo wasn't specifically to increase reach or effective top tube, but to increase stability overall. That's done by increasing the wheel base by making the front center longer and reducing the stem length.

The key thing however is that cockpit size had to remain "relatively" the same as human torso's didn't expand at the advent of the forward geo concept. ;-) On GT's, the reach and eft are slightly longer, but perhaps that's due to input from the Athertons, who are all on the tall side.

So at 48.2" long (wb) for a medium Summum it's certainly long and low. Just a smidgin behind the medium GT Fury at 48.4". To put that in perspective, my LARGE 2011 Operator (which is an up-size for me) is 48.5 .

Anyway....

@charlielynes: I read the same thing. It's just weird because when you see the lad shirtless, he sure isn't a physical specimen.
  • 2 1
So basically the vibe I am getting here is that Danny won because A.He wanted it more than others and B.He trains harder than others. Makes perfect sense now.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: Are you being sarcastic? You don't win 3 WC's and World Champs with sheer luck. Sure, body position and bike geometry will play a part, but only a very small part. Danny has been riding with Mondraker for some time, and it's only up until now he's began to win. So, in theory, his recent wins has nothing to do with the bike frame. His suspension setup will play a role for sure, we know he's been playing around with that doing laps at Fort Bill. But at the end of the day it comes down to his strength, fitness and dedication to succeed.
  • 3 3
@Jack-McLovin: 1.Where did I say he won with sheer luck? 2.All World Cup Top10 guys are doing similar amount of work as Danny, this sport is too developped these days to make a case that he works out more than others, while saying he wants it more has as much factual coverage as chemtrails. He won and you will never know why. It's like why has Gwin destroyed his wheel, because he didn't want it as bad? Sht happens. What you can say is that Danny through his physcial, mental and technological preparation has put himself in a favorable position to grab the win, like many others, but it was him to grab it. And then he had some luck for sure. So... what have we learned from this? Ah yes, I am an a-hole ruining the fun.
  • 2 1
@WAKIdesigns: Just watch him. Look at how he peddles more than everyone else, and how he can continue pumping the f*ck out of his bike the entire way down. He can only do that through having better fitness. The more peddling and pumping you do, the better time you're going to get. Not rocket science really is it?
  • 2 0
@panaphonic: interesting thanks. I agree the bike looks long with him on it, i just thought i heard in an interview recently that he said he was on a M. must not have been correct.

@BDKR not knocking forward geometry a bit, i ride a snabb L at 470 reach, i'm 6'0/182cm. Just comparing the numbers, a 442 reach for size large Summum isn't that exactly long.
  • 1 0
 @b26-4-Life: Ahhh.... I see.

Yeah.... I agree that 442 isn't that long for a reach number but Cesar more than the others (GT or Chris Porter) was about preserving (my word not his) cockpit size while increasing the front center.

Another interesting thing is that Cesar Rojo felt that Forward Geo had greater effect on AM/Enduro bikes. As a matter of fact...

videos.mtb-news.de/23252/eurobike_2012_mondraker_mit_forward_geometry

There is a video in that link where he talks about it.

Personally, I'm sold! I have a large '15 Canfield Balance and the large '11 Operator I mentioned and am 5' 9" / 175cm. One of these days I may blow out everything and just get a Nicolai Ion GPi.
  • 1 0
@BDKR: preserving cockpit while increasing front center would just be a slacker head angle or to a smaller degree maybe increased stack (extends FC for given reach)
  • 1 0
@b26-4-Life: Did you watch the video?

You can preserve the cockpit while increasing the top tube or reach. That's why you shorten the stem.

@Spark24: If there is a POV run I'd like to see, it's Laurie's. I was simply gasping the entire time he went down the track on the feed. Much like Danny, slightly out of control but completely in control. Speed seemed to be the difference between getting swallowed up by the holes or blazing over the top of them.

All season I have been telling my buddies that the Mondraker seems to be the most composed bike on the really really rough tracks. By no means do I think that Greenland or Hart owe it all to that bike but that bike gave them the ability to absolutely pin and know that the bike would be there for them. You go back and watch the vital raw videos of the tracks and just watch Danny come down and watch how that bike tracks the ground... It's just... Better. But like I said it's most certainly more the rider than anything and man, Danny Hart is the fucking man!!!!! What fun it was to watch that run!!
  • 6 0
Good to see love for Danny, from outside the UK, as well as inside. I think everyone can appreciate the down to earth attitude, the sheer grit, determination and hard work it's taken DH to get back to the top step after 5 years. Welcome back, Danny-boy!

Danny's last four races are a good example how important is a good feeling of myself and a relax of a head in a sport. Now he can do everything he want...that behaviour have just a few riders in a whole WC roster...I can see just Danny, Loic, Greg and Aaron...

Ever heard about start intervals? 3 min gaps for the top guys, run was 3:30 min.
Even with enough cameras to cover the whole track it is impossible to show a full run, because there are always two riders on course.
It's even worse for the lower ranked riders with much shorter start intervals.
Replays, introducing the rider in the start gate, etc., it all adds up.
