Devinci to Step Away from UCI Downhill for 2017

Nov 28, 2016
by Pinkbike Staff
“The year 2016 has been an emotional one at Cycles Devinci. The season started with great promise, as Stevie Smith was once again in World Cup winning form after several seasons marred by injuries.

Steve Smith longlivechainsaw

Things were bright on the Enduro scene as well; Damien Oton secured the second place in the EWS overall standings. There was also Magnus Manson’s unforgettable podium finish at the World Championships in Val Di Sole Italy.

Damien Oton kept his relentless consistency on track today for fifth this evening.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck in early May, Stevie Smith was lost in a motorcycle accident in his hometown of Nanaimo, BC. This sad news was hard on everyone at Devinci and it also had a major impact on riders and fans all over the world. Steve’s contribution and commitment to the Devinci brand, but most importantly to the sport, will always be remembered.

Steve Smith longlivechainsaw

Unable to put together a team that met our expectations, we took the decision to step away from UCI Downhill racing for 2017. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but we hope to return to World Cup racing in the very near future.

Steve Smith longlivechainsaw

Our involvement in racing and the Devinci Global Racing Team has always been one of our top priorities. Although we are taking a short break from DH racing, our Enduro program will be going strong with Damien and Theo on the EWS circuit. We will also continue to support many great athletes and programs around the World in all cycling disciplines in their quest for the podium.”

Just shows how hard it is to replace the chainsaw.

 Stevie can never be replaced.

I call B.S.... Stevie would totally disagree with this move. You don't see Martin Ashton or Tara Llanes protesting the sport be put on hold until everyone feels better or suggesting riders find another activity. More memorial service's have been conducted to Steve Smith than many other great Athletes. We all enjoyed Stevie while he was with us and will remember His great contribution to Mtn. Biking and Life. "Ride On" is what He would say.

This is clearly about business politics and the reason could be anything for them to cancel next season.
  • 80 8
@likeittacky: I agree with you that Stevie would not like this decision, but to say its purely a decision based on business politics is a bit un-empathetic and potentially arrogant.

There is no way for any of us to know what those close to him went through or are going through. Im sure the entire WC DH team (mechanics, drivers, all of them) were deeply affected and its completely possible critical people in the program were simply beaten emotionally and didn't want to continue as assembled. You cannot expect a team to jive the same and just move on after a big lose. Every minute of their days at work were probably stinging reminders of what happened.

We have to assume they made the best decision based on the circumstances and how those involved in the program felt.

We as partakers in the sport will move on. We have to let Devinci Racing move on how they see fit.
  • 8 2
@likeittacky: I second that. The fact that DGR will not be attending the World cup circuit this year is a massive dissapointment. I feel that despite hard times, the best thing to do is push through adversity and stay strong despite the odds. Financial standpoint aside, you have the support of the fan base and to be honest, I feel this will only tarnish the sales of the Devinci DH bike sales. Unless this is a reason for them to buy time to solve the recall issues of their carbon frame. Personally... the aluminum one rides better anyway. #longlivechainsaw

No need to get mad here fellas. I don't think anyone could be considered a replacement for Stevie. He's an icon, a first in some ways. You can't be the second first. If Devinci manages to bring forward a new great racer, it can become a mental blockade if people look at him/her as a replacement for Stevie instead of just another individual. To be constantly compared.

It may seem harsh but even if Stevie would have loved the DH team to have continued (which he probably would have liked indeed) it isn't just his call. It is a team. And if the whole team is still mourning, a fresh new rider who just hasn't been as deeply involved will continue to feel like an outsider. You can't have that. For those knowing the history of Metallica (rock band), you don't want to put anyone in that Jason Newsted position.

So if Devinci feels they need more time, I can absolutely see that as a human, emotional decision. Not just business.
  • 4 3
@cthorpe: Apathy and arrogance are surly not of my intent, but to point out that there is more loss in dwelling on such an event for an extensive amount of time than to be bold, learn from the experience, except it and move forward. Life has many object lessons regarding this very thing.

With all Respect ; KEEP ON RIDING

@likeittacky: Where did they say anything about putting the sport on hold???? And I quote "Unable to put together a team that met our expectations, we took the decision to step away from UCI Downhill racing for 2017. It was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but we hope to return to World Cup racing in the very near future." Yes, it is a business decision but who do you propose they put on the team that can win....you?
  • 3 4
 @bikeorski4me: Troy Brosnan? Loris Vergier?
  • 8 9
@likeittacky: I assume they'll be allocating the WC DH team funds to their E-bike initiatives..
  • 5 4
@bikeorski4me: Step away, put on hold, whats the difference? They are closing shop in DH for a season, claiming lack of talent to suffice. Well there are plenty of young progressive Riders, and some older, that would love to have that spot representing D.G.R .on a DH Bike. No, i would not want the position because I'm not 24 years young anymore; unfortunately.

In other sports there is whats called a draft. Why not move into the lower ranks, snatch up some talented riders, give them the tools/ support to really prove that they have what it takes; rather than wait for a Messiah on a bike.
This is what YT is founded on and just look at what they get in return.
  • 11 0
Why don't we all stop Interneting, take a deep breath and go ride our bikes? Ride for those who no longer can and stop the meaningless bickering. Long Live Chainsaw.
  • 5 1
@likeittacky: umm... YT wouldn't run a WC team until it lured the absolute best rider on the planet, despite having a DH model for sale for a few years before.

 @vinay: Perfect.

@bikeorski4me: I will give it a shot!!!! Big Grin

Where will Mark Wallace race this coming season?
  • 5 3
A new team perhaps ? (Just mentioning a possibility )
  • 11 3
Doubt he will leave the team. Most likely take a season to train and do some videos. Then next year hopefully they can sign a top tier guy to ride with him.
  • 12 0
@mckrider:Lets hope! He is an awesome rider and an extremely nice guy.
  • 11 0
@mckrider: Yeah no way Devinci is letting Wallace go just because they're not fielding a complete "Factory Team". I bet he'll operate as a privateer of sorts with Devinci support, i could see them doing this with their juniors/other riders as well.
  • 5 0
My question as well. Hopefully he either gets the support he deserves from Devinci, or finds another great team. Dude is a talent.
  • 3 1
 @ldhbaker: #letwallaceride
  • 2 0
I feel like this should be the top comment, such a talented rider and overall awesome dude! Unless he opted out on the season himself its sad to see Devinci do him like that.
  • 37 2
Can't help but feel the tightening at the top end by UCI will have something to do with this. Mark Wallace can easily break top thirty but unless you have at least two guys getting TV exposure, why fund a dh team? Sad times.
  • 9 1
Unfortunately I agree with you @thestigmk1, it is sad news for the sport when top teams and brands are pulling out because they are unable to secure the podium positions they want. With only a handful of teams at the top pushing the pace of progress and tech the sport as a whole will suffer. Hurry back Devinci, we need all the players we can get in this game!
  • 22 5
Man, as much as I'd love to see the Wilson on on the stage next year I totally understand why it would be a challenge to field a World Cup team for Devinci right now. Mark Wallace is a great rider, but he's not in the contention for the top 10, and the whole purpose of fielding a team is to reap advertising benefits. If their team isn't in the spotlight, then there is really no reason to be there, it costs just as much to send a top 30 rider around the world as it does to send a top 3 rider (minus probable salary differences). Devinici is not a huge company, and being a small business owner myself I totally sympathize with the challenge associated with allocating limited funds when surrounded by a bunch of bigger companies.

I hope they decide to shift their WC budget to grass-roots stuff around Canada and the other markets they want to gain share in. If local racers keep winning on their bikes they will continue to enjoy the popularity they currently have.

I'm never giving up my Troy, Wilson or Spartan. Miss you Stevie.
  • 35 0
You are right! But Wallace is definitely a top 10 contender....He finished 6th in 2015 at MSA.
  • 29 0
Mark Wallace is most absolutely a top 10 WC contender. 6th at MSA in 2015, 8th at Val Di Sole, 8th at the opening round in Lourdes in 2016, and 11th at 2016 Worlds.
  • 9 5
@rilor: He is sometimes, but not consistently enough. I'm not saying he isn't a fatastic rider, but he's not one that is really in the contention for podiums consistently. I will concede that he could be in contention for top 10 though, my bad.
  • 4 1
@cueTIP: he just needs a bit more time. stevie was an excellent mentor for him, but wallace is an awesome rider... consistency will hopefully come soon in the future, because he'll be another steady canadian contender.
  • 1 0
Yep, I'd say he's absolutely a top 10 contender (he's knocking on the door of a podium, even), and a huge inspiration to a lot of Canadian riders, but I can totally understand Devinci wanting a top-step contender if they're going to run a full world cup season, especially with where the Canadian dollar is at these days. Must be expensive to keep the machine moving.
  • 13 1
Nobody will ever be able to replace Stevie fully. I have a lot of respect for the decision to step away for a year or two rather than hire a rider who will feel like they are living in his shadow. It would be a lot of pressure to try to live up to.
  • 11 3
Good decision Devinci. For those saying it's because they are broke, you know nothing about Devinci, they are a relatively small brand in this sea of Giant, specialized, Gt, Trek and all. They are good because they make good decisions, If they feel the need to have a top contender in their team to survive the WC season, they have to have one. WC season cost ALOT of money and for a small brand from Canada, it's even more expensive, our Dollar is at f*cking 0,60 US and most of the race are in Europe where the $ is even lower for us. Just imagine the extra cost they have. Devinci, i f*cking love you and so do i love my troy!

 1 CDN = .74 USD
  • 6 6
 @weappa: it's called exaggeration
  • 4 1
@weappa: Factual statement. However, have you exchanged currency at a currency exchange place, or even bank for that matter? Exchange rates are rarely the same as what you actually pay to convert funds. Service fees and bank profits make sure that you pay more than just the exchange rate. Maybe not .60, but for sure worse than what your google search told you...
  • 1 1
@VwHarman: It really depends on the bank, your relationship with said bank, and how much money you're transferring. I can trade currency at my bank for 1% below exchange because I do a lot of currency trading with them.

Also, factor in the fact that Devinci sells a lot of bikes to the United States and a few into Europe and they probably have a healthy US bank account full of money they don't need to convert.

That said, why spend money when there will be no ROI.
  • 7 0
Just as Mark Wallace was gaining traction and finding his way to more consistent results.... BOOM! Blow the whole team up!... Really hope he can find his way on to another team.
  • 6 0
Same man. I can only imagine that this is the last thing Steve would have wanted (his brother from another mother to be homeless).
  • 3 0
@spinko: maybe being away from Devinci with a change of teams could be good for Wallace. If he had a fellow pro to follow and look up to without having the weight of carrying the whole team on his back he can spend the time to develop and be more consistent
  • 2 0
 @mtbman1980: Here's hoping!
  • 5 0
@spinko: For sure. But Devinci is a business, not a life insurance company or a charity. Without a man up top, its difficult to justify the costs of a UCI campaign. Especially seeing as they are a small company.

Completely understandable decision.
  • 1 0
@Joebro1995: understandable for sure... does not mean I have to be happy about it. Frown
  • 8 0
What about Mark Wallace? He is pretty much my rider to watch since Stevie's passing.
  • 2 0
I bet he still rides but as a privateer.
  • 2 0
Me too - he's why I've been watching world cups. I really hope he races next year.
  • 10 5
Ouch! This is another set back for Canadian DH racing. Puts two promising Canadian racers without a team. I hope they find support for next season. Stevie Smith put Devinci on the map...they should have continued to support Canadian DH racers. Not sure that I have the same respect for the brand (I own a Spartan). Shame...
  • 3 1
I agree they should be helping push canadian riders not backing out. I feel that would be what stevie would want more than pulling the whole team out. just my 2 cents tho.
  • 13 1
There are more ways to support Canadian Riders than sponsor a UCI World Cup DH team. In fact, I would say the argument could be made that there are way better ways to support Canadian riders than fund a World Cup race team. Lets see what they do before we criticize them for doing nothing. BTW, to my understanding they have been supporting the efforts of the Stevie Smith fund here in Nanaimo, and we just got a new skills park announced that will be built in Stevie's legacy for the community and for young and upcoming riders. That seems supportive to me...
  • 1 0
@VwHarman: Really only has a very small impact though, they'd be better to use the money to keep the team and build one or two new riders from across Canada. Otherwise, what will their riders do during the fallow period? Kick their heels, and hone their skills? Or move on? And how does that benefit the team?
  • 6 0
@truffy: I'm not talking about racing at all. I am talking about supporting grass-roots efforts and skill-development efforts. I am suggesting that the race-team budget could be diverted to other development or "community engagement projects and effect more people directly as oppossed to helping a few riders and their fans. I loved watching Chainsaw ride, he is still considered a local hero where I live, but I think he would have loved to see efforts put into our community to encourage more kids to get on a bike. World Cup DH doesn't have fans if young kids don't get excited riding whatever they have to ride. I would love to see Devinci on the circuit still, but I also am not going to criticize them for making a tough choice.
  • 2 0
 @VwHarman: Good point. Upvoted.
  • 4 0
Honestly, I get it. Chainsaw was my favorite rider to watch, I swear I watched the pink bike memorial video more than I watched the World Cup hell I even downloaded the Cold War Kids album off of iTunes. It hit me really hard when he died, and I am not the type to get upset or emotional when a celeb or athlete dies, I couldn't care less but I think as a viewer it was easy to connect with Stevie. He was just such a down to earth positive guy. If I, someone who has never met him can be left feeling like this I can only imagine how the team must feel. What a tremendous loss. #Longlivechainsaw
  • 5 0
I can understand the decision Devinci has made here, and I totally understand it wasn't an easy one. I just hope the rest of the team will find their place(s) within other factory teams.
  • 8 0
Sad news. Hope Wallace finds a ride for 2017.
  • 3 0
Mark Wallace is a solid top 20 rider. 2 top ten finishes in 2015 including a 6th at Saint Anne less then .5 off 5th, and an 8th at Val di Sole. The knarlier the better. Bummer about DGR, hope they come out swinging in 2018. Cheers Stevie.
  • 5 0
Was really hoping to see Magnus on the elite Devinci team next year. Hope he gets the opportunity he deserves after an amazing 2016!
  • 5 1
Anyone think Devinci may make a return to DH in roughly 2 years with a new DH sled to debut on the DH circuit named...Devinci Smith? Carry on the pedigree of both the Wilson, and the pilot who took it to glory?
  • 1 2
Thats a nice thought but there is probably a business consideration that you are overlooking. Just because Steve was on their team for a few years and passed away while he was riding for them doesn't give Divinci the right to continue to use his name. If they were to market a bike called the Smith it would obviously be connected to Steve and thus would likely mean Divinci would have to work out some kind of deal with his estate or family to continue using the name. If I were his family I would probably problem with a company marketing a bike named after my dead relative.
  • 2 0
@sino428: Not overlooking anything. Not saying it will happen, not saying it has to. It was merely an observation that they have used "humanized"names in the past for many or most of their model names, and it would be a sensible way to make a splash if they do intend to return to the factory race scene. I had no intention of debating the logistics of making the deal happen, just had a though pop in my head that it might be an interesting an unique opportunity to honour a former rider who left an impact, and market a new product.
  • 2 0
@sino428: His family might have a problem with it. Or they might see it as a fitting tribute. It's their call, assuming that Devinci even suggest it.
  • 1 0
@truffy: perhaps they would see it as a fitting tribute if divinci were to donate the proceeds to some kind of memorial fund. But if they just name a bike that and sell it normally there is no way his family would be ok with that. I would think most people (myself included) would find profiting off a guys death to be disgusting.
  • 1 0
@sino428: Too bad there are little proceeds from developing a DH bike these days. For most companies making a DH bike they are made at a loss as a marketing tool, and selling them aftermarket is the hope of recouping that cost.
  • 1 0
@sino428: "If they were to market a bike called the Smith it would obviously be connected to Steve and thus would likely mean Divinci would have to work out some kind of deal with his estate or family to continue using the name."

Nope.

A word like "Smith" is so ubiquitous - and has so many meanings and uses - that they could EASILY make a bike by that name; and (if the family objected, which I STRONGLY doubt would happen, more likely seeing it instead as a respectful tribute) it'd be easy to argue, if DeVinci were so inclined, that it's "just" a name, and that they have no control over whether people CHOOSE to connect it to a particular rider.
  • 1 0
@KeithReeder: I have to disagree on both points. And keep in mind I am only speaking in terms what I know about the laws here in the US.

First about the name Smith. You are definitely wrong here. Yes its ubiquitous, but that doesn't give a company unrestricted use of the name. The laws would look at the context of how its being used, and what's implied by the use of the name, and in this case, if the bike company who used to sponsor Steve on their DH team, produced a downhill bike called the Smith, it would be quite obvious what they were doing. An argument saying "its just a name" would never hold up in court. Imagine if a shoe company started producing basketball shoes call the "James", or a soccer cleats called the "cristiano". That would be ridiculous.

Second about his family. Do you really think his family would be OK with a company 1) continuing to profit off their dead relatives name? and 2) would be OK not getting compensated if they did? You are crazy if you think his family would just see it as a nice tribute.
  • 6 2
Stevie is never to be replaced. But FINN ILES would be a great ambassador for Canadian DH and Devinci. Bring the boy back home!
  • 2 1
Agreed. Devinci will find their way back through EWS with the likes of Stu Dickson (Revelstoke Athlete of The Year). If they're smart enough to give him a full season... otherwise he will get picked up by another.
  • 4 0
Bit of a kick in the nutsack for the rest of the team. They don't meet their expectations. Nothing like your only here to make up the numbers.

Magnus is very fast AND has had support!

Man it was such a shock to hear off the loss of stevie smith early on this year the man was a icon and legend to the sport and had done such much to promote mountain biking and DH racing in canada and for devinci global raceing, he all so had a big fan base around the world too its a fitting and very respect full thing for devinci too do until thay feel right to come back big respect to them and too stevie longlivechainsaw
  • 2 1
It's been a crazy year for the team. Loosing Smith was devestating for the team and friends, sponsors and the whole cycling-community. On top of this Mark struggled and Brage was unlucky with his accidents during the season. I agree with all here about Mark deserving a spot in the circus. But I need to give a big hand to Brage as well. Being young and in his first WC season, it is very sad to see him lost the posibility to show what he really is made of, because his first ever big accident(s) resulting in a broken back. I really hope B-rage gets the chance to show what he is made of through another team, there is a whole lot of race-pedigree in that boy! So somebody, give this guy a spot on your team!
  • 1 0
Here's an idea maybe they needed a top ten finisher to make WC a viable option and thus could bring themselves to do it. I would think devinci would still be in mourning long after keyboard worriors on pink bike have stopped. Rest in peace Stevie

I have a bad feeling that Devinci is suffering from fiscal woes. Several dealers here in Colorado have stopped carrying them due to the margins being too tight. I hope I am wrong since I own a 16 Devinci Carbon Troy and love it.
  • 2 1
I love Stevie and am a huge fan so I mean no disrespect by asking this. Does anyone know if he was wearing a helmet the time of his crash? Sorry if this is inappropriate by asking this here but it is something I've always wondered.
  • 1 0
He was wearing his proper gear including his helmet
  • 1 0
I don't think it's ever been confirmed or denied but I think it's VERY unlikely he wasn't wearing one. As far as I know he was cross training on his dirt bike and I would bet my life that he was wearing a lid.
  • 2 1
Finn has one more year left with specialized if Im not mistaken. Maybe they bring in Finn after his time with specialized is up? Not saying Finn is going to leave specialized but definitely something to think about. I really hope Mark and Magnus can find a way to stay in shape and competitive this season whether it be finding a new team or just competing is some more amateur races. All the best to the people at Devinci. Hope to see you back and racing on the UCI circuit in no time.
  • 1 0
What obviously happened here is Devinci was unable to sign one of the few top riders that are now available. A WC team is a very costly endeavor and it really isn't worth it to run a team without one or two top riders unless you are a European brand, in which case expenses are much less.
  • 2 0
Yea but tell that to the keyboard warriors here

Wow, this would be the first company in my memory to throw away a worlds medalist, young just over 20 talent, and the memory of a recent fallen comrade that they could have got behind and made historic for many years to come....who is making such a call that any right company would jump on such a situation?
  • 2 0
This feels a bit like a bitch slap to the mouth for every devinci rider this year. I'd be upset. Like, nearly contract voiding upset.
  • 3 2
Yep, think they've made the correct decision. Take a year off to refresh then re-group, put their thoughts and effort together and make a solid come back for 2018.

This pretty much says " Stevie was the only rider we cared about and now that he is no longer with us the rest of the team can piss off because they do not matter." Way to go Devinci you literally just said all your other sponsored riders suck and employing them and there mechanics is not worth the money to you. Stevie would not agree with this decision.

Honourable decision under the circumstances. We will miss you for 2017 but we know you'll be back!! #LongLiveChainsaw

Lame excuse for not having a team in my opinion. No way Stevie would have wanted this.

What a horrible company no faith in Wallace wich is top ten rider and young talent moving on up to juniors and juniors to race pro the sport need company that gunna help it grow not company's that back out dh need company to step up not step out.  Companies are free to do what they think is best for their business it just annoys me when I see this line:

"Although we are taking a short break from DH racing, our Enduro program will be going strong with Damien and Theo on the EWS circuit."

I mean no offense to Enduro, its cool and all, but it has nothing to do with DH. The fact that they have a good enduro team has no bearing on how I feel about them dropping DH.
