Evan Guthrie's Super Awesome Winter Camp

The inaugural sUPER aWESOME winter camp took place this past week at Camp Guthrie, located in the boonies of Peachland, BC. It's pretty darn cool when you can have a bunch of different athletes from different sports and different teams come together. I wanted to do something unique this winter, as cycling people always head south and ride - only to forget about winter. But, since I'm a lover of the winter season I thought hey, let's put together a winter camp and do winter activities with awesome people! A mixture of XC, DH, road, track and general cyclists came together. I assembled the A-team with local hot shots and some out-of-towners for a week of super awesome fun times.

Evan Guthrie s Super Awesome Winter Camp 2015

Day 1: Didn't happen with the group, as the record snowfalls over the weekend had the Squamish/Whistler crew a day behind in their drive. This led to a solo snowshoe adventure and 2.5 hours of snow removal around the property. Always pros and cons of living up in the boonies but, hey, the bright side is my upper body is only growing and getting ready for the beach season.

Day 2: Long adventure snowshoe from the Guthrie ranch in search of cliffs to jump off. The fitness level rose real quick after some knee-deep sluggin' through the heavy snow. Felix Burke knew how to go big on the snowshoes and peer pressured me to jump too. Ended up being my biggest cliff jump to date at around 20 ft.

Day 3: We went high above the Okanagan cloud and fog to the Nordic Ski Area for some cross-country skiing. We started off with a couple coffee stops and paired with homemade banana bread to fuel the fire. Bluebird skies and sunburn was reported by the team. We had to refresh with a stop at Tree Brewing's Beer Institute in Kelowna for micro-brews and flatbread pizzas that are actually made with beer inspired ingredients - Yes!

Day 4: Serious vert as we B-lined straight up the mountain on snowshoes in search of cliffs to jump off and views to see. It was foggy, which meant it turned to just a cliff jumping focus. We had some more special guests join today and introduced them to "real" snowshoeing. We may wear spandex and shave our legs but that doesn't mean front flipping off cliffs in the winter doesn't happen. Bas Van Steenbergen left the DH bike and joined this session. I think we surprised him a little..

After Day 4 Snowshoe: Rocky-style strength happened in the yard and then we threw down in the kitchen to cook a feast. Just what we needed heading into another day of snowshoe sluggin'.

Day 5: Not going to lie, this snowshoe hurt my legs a tad. Felt like the Stair Master 3000 when we pointed straight up a mountain and had almost waist deep, and heavy, snow to truck through. Lucky we brought along the .22 to take a mid-snowshoe "break" to allow Andreane and Felix shoot for their first time and eat some extra chocolatey chip cookies.

Day 6: Another destination exercise day to Nickleplate Ski Area near Apex Mountain. Around here that place is considered up high in the mountains at elevation, which may have worked us a bit. Another great crew out today and we skied through the fog, which unfortunately didn't allow us to see all the beautiful views, although it did get our appetites a brewin' for a stop at Bad Tatoo Brewing in Penticton for pizza and beer with our friends from The Bike Barn.

Day 7: Massive pancake breakfast before the house guests took off. After many, many hours of winter activities this past week it was time for a much needed relaxing day.

MASSIVE thank you to everyone who took part in this winter camp and made it a success. Camp participants included: Andreane Lantheir-Nadeau, Felix Burke, Quinn Moberg, Owen Harrison, Tim Sherstobitoff, Jeff Sherstobitoff, Peter Watson, Bas Van Steenbergen, Matt Clark - Stirl and Rae Photography, Aart & Kerry Van Kooy, Chris & Lisa Prowse and Nic & Shea Seaton

This is awesome!! Life is about balance and seeing an athlete who can take advantage of every aspect of life and who is interested in everything the world has to offer is truly inspiring.
