And all the way up too. That's a lot of pedaling uphill in between stages. The "pedaling efficiency doctors" must have felt a bowel movement as they saw Sam killing it.
Hill has already previously stated he finds it difficult to ride clips. I think it was in an interview at la thuile that he said he would have crashed into a tree if he was on clips
@bikounet: Hm, 3 out of 21 podiums on flat pedals so far in men's EWS results (and all for Sam Hill). So maybe it should be "flat pedals win *a few* medals"?
Is SCRIBD the reason I see a grey box with a sad face document with a 'the connection was reset' message below it every bloody time I try and see race times on Pinkbike?!
If so, then yes DOWN WITH SCRIBD!!!!! Otherwise I don't know what I'm shouting for...
Don't imagine the contract was only a year but there is probably an out clause for both parties if they really want it. I imagine the money is better than what Yeti could have offered due to the size of the Specialized organisation so maybe he'll stay put. I just know he will be gutted with the way his season is going and the issues he's been having with some of the gear he's obliged to use !
Also, it's just his first year. Gwin struggled in his first year for the big S, then massively improved the following year. Tyres have been a big issue for Graves this year, pretty much single handedly making him uncompetitive. Once that is sorted I really hope Jared's luck improves as he's one of the nice guys in our sport for sure...
I'd just like to add that whilst Jared hasn't 'won' much this year, it depends on how you define victory - he's not won as many races/stages (but then Rude has leapt ahead massively this year and maybe he'd not have won as many on Yeti either) but he has been pulling in a better wage and is better able to provide for his family in the future. Specialized may also have the funding to keep him on in an advisory or ambassador role after, where Yeti would probably not have anything like a similar package on offer. I'd say the match is decent outside of results - it's pretty clear that there are areas where Specialized need to improve to not be left behind and Jared is proving to be quite good at finding them. Perhaps that was one reason Specialized bought him in? A racers career is hardly long after all, so perhaps as a long game this is actually a very good move for him?
@slimboyjim: Not sure about that based on what happened to Todd Wells. I don't know the real story there but he had been with Specialized for like forever and still ended up on SRAM/TLD/Scott for the twilight of his career.
It does bring Nicos skills under the microscope, still incredible and in the day extraordinary, a different level compared to his competition.. but then there is Sam, the complete rider ? This could go down to the line ! Enduro needed this recognition, not knocking other riders ( Clementz, Graves etc) whose input is massive, but there is only one Vouillox and one Hill.... We just need live coverage now ;-)
Honestly I think it reduces the performance of the existing ews riders. If you've got two guys who used to be at the top of wc dhand can still dominate past their prime it tells me ts well and truly a secondary sport that has a log way to go before maturity. Yes it reuires different fitness etc and yes other wc guys have raced and not done well , but they havet been doing it seriously. Anyone who has tried properly has been at the top. Remember graves was also a mtb great before ews, not a hill or a nico but still a great.
I cant help but feel it's where riders go if they're not competitive at wc dh, and I include hill. Fabien barel ad some great insight into this and stated it should stand on its iwn
yeah great to see Sam up top, I know it's collective time but it's funny how the number's work out: Melamed's 3rd,6th, & 1st puts him behind Sam's 6th,2nd and 5th. Let's see if he can hold it tomorrow?? Me fingers're crossed.
I'd like to see him on a zerode, that would be a big WTF..
Running a zerode and flat pedals with hill at the helm.... the world of enduro would implode
sam and nukeproof fit pretty nice. they backed him when his results were not the best. i think silent mr. hill and a marketing big mouth bs brand like yt arent made for each other. but why am i even tryin to tell u this? kiss my ass
That's just brilliant for Sam and Nico to be racing each other, head to head. Who'd of thought that would ever happen? I'm really looking forward to the highlights reel!
Stoked for Sam Hill, just wish he was still shredding DH tracks... Nothing against Enduro (after all it's sooooo hot right now), but DH world cup is the crown jewel of Mtn. bike racing...
DH is the crown jewel of mtb? Since when do mountain bikers only ride for 10 minutes a day and do very little pedaling? Enduro encompasses everything that makes mountain biking what it is in the first place.
@Marcusthefarkus: I mean the whole spectacle of the world cup, televised, huge crowns, fairly short event so people will actually watch the whole thing.. like the 100m dash in the olympics or hockey in the winter olympics the marquee events... Any way to each their own..
@Marcusthefarkus: it is clearly the F1 of cycling. It will always hold the history and be reveared as where the fastest and best riders in the world compete.
@atrokz: I'd disagree. I think it's closer to rally cars. F1 would be road I think. More tech and much more restrictions on those bikes (frames at least).
But let's all just agree no matter the bike, they're all loads of fun to ride. And all pros have equal amounts of skill, just in different aspects of riding.
@slickwilly1: I think enduro could make a pretty decent televised (well, online I guess) event if they spent any effort on it. Like do some updates during each race day, then proper live coverage of the last stage (not like the whistler one where they just showed the GLC drop and not much else).
@Rusettipasta: if we can't get excellent DH coverage with the help of RedBull, it would be next to impossible to provide televised coverage of Enduro. First, Enduros aren't usually in established resorts like they are in DH, where in Enduro they are in some cases considered to be true back country tracks. Just look at most of the timing areas; in Enduro they are pop-up tents with 1-2 people tracking the time, where DH has Tissot come out and set up lasers and chips, etc. Second, there is one course in DH, so film crews have weeks to set up. In Enduro, the tracks aren't usually released until the last day or two, and they are covering 3-5 different tracks in a day and they are much longer than a 3-5 min DH race. To be honest, between PinkBike, Vital, and Dirt, we are extremely lucky to get the coverage we do. Lots of hard working folk out there doing the very best possible with the given locations and resources.
@Zanebodd: sure. Just that the technology in DH racing is way beyond what exists in road what with telemetry and suspension etc. Plus it being the fastest requiring the quickest reaction time etc.but yea can draw conparisons to both.
@Marcusthefarkus: that's like saying that driving around town is better than racing F1. Enduro may be the most practiced form on mtnbiking, but DH is the top category of mtnbike racing.. Bigger teams, more money, live tv.. Plus most of the technology developed up until recent years came out of DH racing.. Not to mention that some of enduro's top racers today are/were DH racers.. Even Richie has a DH background.. Not trying to say that enduro is better or worse than DH or viceversa.. I think they're both awesome.. But it is what it is.. As far as mtn biking goes DH is F1
If so, then yes DOWN WITH SCRIBD!!!!! Otherwise I don't know what I'm shouting for...

P.S. Flats for the win!! (Maybe)
