Mark Weir is good at life. He made a habit of climbing more than a million vertical feet in a year, and is always ready to work harder, and play harder, than anyone you’ve ever met. He’s ready to give you the shirt off his back, the last bit of food in his fridge and the best chicken in his coop. But Weir is most in his element, and at his best, when he’s able to share trails with other mountain bikers — friends and strangers alike.
Maddie leading Campbell on our first day out. Age before beauty. Mark Weir shows Thomas Ravina how it's done. Long Lake pit stop. Last decent after a long and memorable day. Randy sends it into the late night hours. No one was quite sure what the rules were to this game were but it was clear that Thomas beat Marco. Count Cutty and his co-captain courageously carving corners and crashing. So, when a mix of mountain bikers were invited to join Weir for a long weekend of riding at his newly christened compound in Graeagle, California, they were a blessed bunch, whether they knew it or not. They understood that it wasn’t going to be easy. This is Weir country, after all. They might’ve eaten sandwiches in the dirt but it wasn’t a picnic. Wake up calls at 4:00 A.M. to catch a glimpse of the rising sun were mandatory. So were half-mile hikes in the snow to “
get to the goods.”
Loss prevention tactics were a must. Thomas Ravina holds his line on Mills Peak. Itchy & Scratchy. Not lost. Far from it. Early to bed... You know the rest. Mills Peak descent was the perfect way to end the weekend. Mark and the town of Graeagle kept us happy and full. But winning at life requires extraordinary purpose. And the ability to share it with others. Weir has a refreshing outlook on sharing these epic places with others.
| Never to exclude, just to carry the respect for the place. That's what makes me who I am everyday. These places are not here for us to keep close. They are here to share. Relationships are built on chance. I'm happy to know chance brought us together to share a place we all need to respect. - Mark Weir |
