Fabien Barel To Retire From Enduro Racing

Aug 31, 2015
by Matt Wragg
There were rumours circulating at Eurobike that Fabien Barel is planning to retire at the end of this season (for the second time). We just got confirmation from the French racing legend that it is true and his last international race will be the final EWS of this season in Finale Ligure. So if you want a chance to see the man do what he has always done best, you have two more chances at Round 7 in Ainsa, Spain (September 26/27) and Round 8 in Finale Ligure, Italy (October 3/4). Here is what he had to say:

bigquotesYes, I will retire from full racing at the end of this season as has always been the plan. I wanted to commit in enduro to finalise the development of the Strive and also to support the take-off of the sport. They are now both on their way and I am keen to commit to new projects. It has been 20 years of racing for me this year. It seems like a good number for an athlete's career! I'll be able to talk about the future very soon but one things is sure, I'll still be around on and off the bike... - Fabien Barel

Fabien Barel was on a mission today to make up for his day yesterday winning both stages today to bring himself up to third from sixth.

Full Pinkbike interview to come soon.

Falling down many times frecuently, like every amateur does, I watch that amazing video about All-Mountain skills, since that I never fall again or have any issues on mi bike. I'll never forget you Fabien Barel, just for teaching us your 20 years old class on a bike.

That NW8 segment is my all time favorite. The style, the skills, the speed and the talent on what by todays standards was a poxy bike.
Emmeline now Fabian gutted.
When the EWS rocked into Ireland the two riders I most wanted to see riding bikes was Fabian and Nico.
Obviously I wanted Greg Callaghan to win Smile

I was excited to see Peaty in val di sole. Exptected him to retire after that injury. Looks like his going to stay for a bit though

Great news. This moves me from the 101,525th best enduro racer in the world to 101,524.
  • 3 0
Good for you...I'm still just the 101,525th best in the country. I don't have international ranking yet. Frown

1st of all He is a great person and role model. 2nd He sure is one of a few Enthusiast athletes of this sport. 3rd I have not seen an athlete goes hard so many times, to come back as strong as he did. 4th I think we'll always remember the NWD 8 segment. I guess it's time for his body to rest. Thanx for those wonderful years FBI.

Legend for sure. I'll miss watching him ride. Good luck for what the future brings Fabien!!!

I have no insider info, but I'll say this: If i ran a world cup team, (or EWS for that matter) there's no-one I'd pay more to be a team coach.
  • 7 0
You're right, he will be team manager of the new Canyon DH team next year, it's not a joke, it's a done deal. New bike too it seems...
  • 1 0
@TMV2 that's awesome. Super excited to hear who they will sign. Would imagine they're going after a big young name if Fab will actually be team manger.
  • 10 0
Hopefully they'll get him out on the mountain for a course preview with Claudio.
  • 3 0
 cesar rojo's new bike?
  • 1 1
retiring to do coaching is the best decision a seasoned athlete can do, that's the problem with a lot of DH riders nowdays they were awesome in their twenties to the point to be local racing celebrities etc... that they want to be racing celebrities in their 30s even 40s, at that age is time to move on, let the young riders be the best in the sport. I was going to rage on Peaty since he was still running in his 40s but the guy has done his part with the Steve Peat Sindicate. Older and Seasoned People have the responsibility to teach younger riders to be the best they can and also have the responsibility to entice more people to join the sport. Farel is out, but he will pass on his mentality of the sport to his apprentices that's for sure.

I have no idea why your comment has been neg-proped. pinkbike comments are so confusing.
  • 7 0
I'm still new to mountain biking (a little over 2 years) but I became a fan of Fabien from watching his instructional videos and the epic rides he goes on. He seems like a genuine good dude with loads of talent. It does suck that he won't be racing, but he's had a solid career and he's highly regarded so best of luck to him on whatever he's got planned next!

Thank you, for making bikes longer.
  • 3 0
Fabien is such a profile in the sport, always professional, always capable of winning everywhere and sometimes against all odds. I hope he wins the EWS total and ends with a bang. Truly deserved (Richie Rude and Flo Nicolai will have many years to come to battle for the overall)

I hope Fab continues with MTB videos because his interviews and insights are always top quality. Would love to see him comment DH and/or EWS for redbull TV.

Deep down I was hoping he'd win an EWS overall title before retiring… Thanks for all, Fab!

Me too. That was an awesome race. The rain at the very end was epic. I bombed down Grouse/Fromme afterwards in the pouring rain after 4 beers or so, on my Kuwahara cruiser bike (mustache bars, rear-brake only, 3" slicks).

Memories.
