@Brakesnotincluded: And Rachel doing this "little sign" while looking at the sky when she finished her run. You can definitely feel that the riders truly consider smith through their runs
@Brakesnotincluded: @Brakesnotincluded: Minaar is truly a great man. Doing it for Stevie, and also honestly caring for the riders that went down while hart and gwin sitting there and chilling and Minaar is grabbing his head, hoping the riders are not hurt. Bless that man.
You know. I was watching on my iPad live this morning but also gathering myself to meet a friend for a ride. I was in my garage, Red Bull coverage on the steps and as I started pulling my bike off the wall the Stevie tribute run came on. I pulled my bike down, stopped what I was doing and watched. After wiping away a small tear I went back to lubing my chain, checking my tires and putting air in my shocks. I thought it was kind of a prophetic moment.
@pigit77: Minaar is just one of those guys we should all be thankful that he represents our sport. Not saying there aren't others but you just know he loves the sport and the people he shares it with.
@lifeofloon: well said sir, well said ! Greg is true gentleman, how he worried about Gee when he crashed, and watched if he get up instead of celebrating (another) win...
@pigit77: Minnaar is solid gold, but it's not a fair fight when you have his superstar personality with the two flattest personalities in the whole sport on either side. Don't be so hard on them.
@boulderbasher69: I think he was referring to the ghost run during finals when there was in essence a five minutes of silence for when Steve would have raced.
Just watched it, tears in my eyes already halfway into his run. Then the swelling noise when he approached the finish section, even more tears. Thank you UCI, thank you Fort William audience, that was amazing!
@Fastestracer a young canadian chasing his dreams is standing on the world cup podium, reminds me of Stevie few years ago, dont you think? he is young,he is in a junior category, but he won a fckin world cup !
Highlights: Stevie Smith's protected run Greg Minaar destroying his run Rachel atherton 12second lead Manon's crash Ed Master's crash George Brannigan's crash Gee Atherton's crash Mike Jones' crash Adam Brayton top 4 Peaty slaying his last wc race at fort william
@darren853: yeah just sayin that he could "come back" .. that is not impossible imo, he would do it just for fun and to shred with his buddies on good weekend, certainly not for racing seriously etc ... My point is that if he still comes at the WC events without competing, I think we'll see him on track havin some fun with the other riders
@RedBurn:yeah, surely he´ll come to encourage his buddies, probably have some training laps with them, but he wont be a part of WC circuit anymore.Today was simply his last -->official-- WC race at Fort William, thats all
Stoked to see him come up, but that run was ugly at the top. The moment he got into the rocks it looked like he had no rebound damping.
Even still, I'm stoked for him!
Minnaar is just amazing, a true professional. Eddy was on some serious adrenaline. Adam Brayton's run was epic. What a race! Great tribute to Stevie. I love our sport.
@JoseBravo: Couldn't agree more dude! Some one either totally gaffed his suspension setup or they decided to focus the setup for the later portions of the track with the idea that if he could make it there without dying he would be in good shape for the rest.
@poah: he's 20 years older than 90% of the field and still getting top 30's at international level. He's not lost anything.
@Jack-McLovin he'd take the bikes he was riding at your age and make you look like an even bigger spoilt brat on your bank of dad specialized. Show some respect.
@thenotoriousmic: Top 30s are faaaar from winning... so yes, he has "lost something". And what does Jack`s skills on the bike have to do with that? Or are you just here to protect your hero from the truth and insult people?
@Kamba6: How was I a dickhead? Please elaborate... Btw, my comments are just a reply to the disliking of a true statement. Otherwise I would not have posted anything.
@Blablablup123: Not to get into lecturing but one should show respect for their elders and legends of our sport. This includes not being a dickhead by posting a shit reply to an innocent comment, even if the contents of that reply is true. I hope that clarifies it for you.
@Kamba6: I never criticized oquartly`s reply, it would have been nice to see Peaty take the win. I just hate this fan boy logic that anything else than hype and idolizing is being disrespectful. Do you think Peaty wants a horde of white knights to defend his public image? Let himself and his riding do the talking ffs.
Le tosseur... Peaty's worship is real and can be sick as every single worship is. Those three times I saw him he had a rock star ego aura around him. But then I thought to myself... he may not deserve to be treated as some god but he definitely doesn't deserve some stupid comments undermining his undeniable and extraordinary achievements, comments having only one aim: hey I am here, please love me. I will achieve that by being a dick to a guy who is respected by 99.99999% of my peer group for a good reason.
@Blablablup123: Ok i'll say it,your a dickhead and a tosser for not showing respect for a racing legend.Everybody know's Peaty wasn't going too win this weekend but we'd all love to believe it could happen.
@Blablablup123: Dude, you clearly have your bearing all wrong. No one said you were a dickhead, and you need to understand that showing respect to one of the greatest DH racers of all time is not being a fanboy. It's simply showing respect.
Peaty has had his riding speak for him for over 20 years, and he still does. The fact that he can still finish in the top 30 is extremely impressive. I don't see you or anyone else in this comment section doing the same.
Finally, no one is defending his public image. There is no need for that because some kid being a dick in the PB comment section will not do any damage to Peaty's image. However, the attitude of being disrespectful to great people for your own gratification deserves to be called what it is and that is being a dickhead.
@WAKIdesigns: Christ, it`s getting ridiculous. Holy shit. Amazing what people can read into simple comments. "comments having only one aim: hey I am here, please love me". Man, if you say so, you are the veteran of comment wars, so I guess you have to be right... Sorry for being such an attention whoring meanie. I`ll to my best to get the twist out of all of your panties again, I`ll even do some night shifts if I have to...
@Blablablup123: I really don't understand why are you standing up for a snotnose tosser who clearly takes his life philosophy from Talladega Nights and has no respect for anyone who hasn't come first int the most recent race.
@Blablablup123 - I know how it works because as the attention whore, I've done that. I also have the "devil's advocate" syndrome and enjoy provoking people. The height of this practice of mine was taking a nihilist approach to Will Whites death. So yea, it's cool to fk with people sometimes but only if the result is uncertain and there's a chance that you can win. Here you can't
Now Peaty can defend himself if he so wish. One comment from him and poah's testosterone level hits the rock bottom because in this situation Peaty plays the soldier at the ending of Lord of the Flies.
@thenotoriousmic: I have upmost respect for Peaty, I was just stating that I don't understand why that dudes comment gets bombarded with down votes because he implied Peaty wouldn't get the win.
As for the bike, the insurance paid for that, thanks for asking. Not sure why we're getting all personal here, but whatever. If it makes you feel better about your bike or upbringing, so be it
All this Peaty downing. Right. Peaty was on the front of MBUK smashing it with the best of them before a lot of commentators here were born. Fact.
The fact that he is still racing at world cup level two decades later is good effort and its the likes of him that have made mountain biking what it is today in the UK. Fact
Good skills Peaty. Well done.
Steve peat has been winning since pretty much the beginning. Every five years or so the sport progresses and the new generation of up in coming shredders turn up to the races and he beats them to and this has been going on for 25 years and he still hasn't stopped now his second place at Bala last week and a top 30 finish at fort William prove that. The guys a freak of nature.
I'm chiming in because "winning" doesn't always mean winning the race. @oquartly I'm sure is referring to a legend, who, in the game of life, is most f*#king definitely a winner.
How do we get more women on DH bikes, and into bike racing in general? The depth is just not there yet. 10th place 40 seconds down? 20th place 1:21 down?
That's the question, isn't it? Everyone loves to hate on the sponsors for lack of equal support, but the time gaps don't lie. Sponsoring the tenth best man means a podium threat every race. Sponsoring the tenth best female; you're not even in the conversation. They are solid riders, to be fair, but if the depth of talent were anywhere near the men's, that rider probably wouldn't even be on the WC circuit. Need more depth of talent for higher quality racing.
@AllMountin: But on the flip side not getting the same level of support for trainers, time on the bike ect... means that they likely have no chance. Sponsors have to take a chance sometimes. Give them 2-3 years of solid support regardless the results and then after that time move on if its nor working, It seems like so many cant even be on the same race team more than a year or two tops. How do you expect them to try and top someone who has all the support i the world. Really if you not a Euro girl at this point you have little to no chance it seems.
Start them racing young I have 3 girls there super into riding they watch all the world cups there really young but say that's what they want todo when they get bigger. Time will tell for my girls but the sport of downhill I think there's going to be more women racing but might not grow just as fast as it should.
soo my thoughts-WTF Brayton,WTF Branningan, that crash was nasty, dont know how he walked away from that one,WTF Minnaar, poor Gee...then congrats to Minnaar,he proved us to never never never count him out !!..and of course tears in my eyes when Stevie had his last WC run...thank you red bull for an awesome footage, also thank you for the new red bull player !! Loving the world cups !!
Might be a little bit biased but greg really showed what a pro he is. Going into this he was down at 18 and not looking on top form...then to come and lay down a run that pretty much demolished the field. I would love to see his full run between split 1 and 2 because that is where he won it. There were plenty of riders ahead of him at split 1...but not a soul at split 2
You don't have to be biased. Greg is such a class act. I may not always be rooting for him but I'm always happy when he wins unlike some of the other guys in the field. Who else shows such compassion and empathy for his fellow rivals while displaying such passion for the sport and athleticism? Very few from what I've seen.
@lifeofloon: Yeah man, I always noticed how concerned he and Peaty both are for other riders. It's amazing!
And the fact they have spread that concern to others in the sport like an infection is why Gravity MTB is one of the best sports on the planet. Even Josh (the second coming of Mick Jagger) is like that.
+1 to seeing the full run. It was so obvious, when everyone turned red on Greg at split 2 after having had a green at split 1, that we did not get to see where the race had been won. Probo some raw footage might be available somewhere.
Warner..........If he's not more careful he'll look like a plate of dropped lasagna.
...................................................................priceless
brannigan and mike Jones got up and back on the bikes today ,soft overpaid footballers take note. I'm just home and reflecting on the day #longlivethechainsaw #sendit for Stevie The respect shown today was emotional ,the silence was deafning ! It was a moment I won't forget for a long time . There wear tears everywhere . Legend never die !
Looked like he injured his right arm. He was holding it strangely in the finish area, and did not downshift when he crossed the line. I hope whatever it is, doesn't keep him off the bike for long.
Watched the all race on flight to Santa Barbara ....thanks to JetBlue for solid wifi thru the flight....felt bad for all the crashes, I wish they did the Steve dh train after the race with the craoud and the media coverage...big props for having the silent Steve ride
sick run, crazy racer steez over`the back to back jumps at the bottom, best kit of the day, sickest custom paint job on his dome, and ppg as a co sponsor......................so rad.
As Gabe said
Stevie would have wanted them to all send it
Mark Wallace my hat is off to you . We are all behind you man .
Finn congrats man . The world is yours
Racecraft at it's finest. Was awesome to see someone so touched by Stevie win it, and dedicate it to him. Could almost see Stevies all or nothing style in Minnar (totally not his style) as he was sending it into the bottom half wide open. Right. in . the . feels. to see his touch his crest and dedicate the ride.
Ft. Bill is a long puzzle of a track... especially with totally different conditions this year and a new woods section. Seems like a pretty big home track advantage for the Brits who've been training there for the last month.
Danny doesn't have the pedal power that Gwin does. He got most his time advantage in by first split, added a lil more on him by 2nd splt. Third split Gwin got very little back, between 3-4 when it starts to flatten out and also when riders get tired Gwin pulled back a second between 3 and 4 and the the rest until the finish. Danny was the slowest on from split 3 to finish of all the podium finishers. It could be ran out of gas, he was clearly the fastest at split 1 which says he went out harder than all the others up top.
@mfoga: Check out the clip in the vital slideshow where Danny cleans the root section after the drop, shows a bunch of other riders too. Pretty amazing
With all due respect and admiration to surfers and their ceremony when one of their own goes to a better place, Today Fort William's tribute to one of ours wast extremely awesome!!!!
Long live Stevie
Cheers
Am I the only one still waiting for Sam Hill's comeback? I know he got a podium on the last Enduro race but it seems like he's not giving 100% for DH at the moment.
Anyway, the Steve Smith tribute was awesome. #longlivechainsaw
GREG MINAAAAAAAAAAAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES
was at a pub with mates yesterday and had the mob tucked on the side of the table watching the race! nobody had realised until I started screaming and cheering!
Ya would be cool if we did something at crankworks for chainsaw
But Steve liked to have a good time as we all know
So my thoughts are instead of a somber event
Let's light whistler on fire or some crazy shit and pay respect to Stevie in a more ass kickin way
Also I think we should rename the Canadian open
To the Steve smith Canadian open
Longlivechainsaw might have to ge painted on hecklers rock
Even without racing Ft William Stevie Smith still is 18th in the overall standings. So technically he is still a protected rider (having ridden two out of the three races, one of those punctured). Not saying that the should do another protected run, it would never quite match this one. But it does go to show how amazing he was. In three races only seventeen competitors gathered more points than he did in two races.
is it me or Aaron Gwin just doesn't seem to bond with anyone, he seem avoided by everyone, even by the media, he just doesn't get included in anything, I mean I know he kick their asses at least the 98% of the time, but he just seem left by the side.
He doesn't drink and party like many others. This is the guy who said his vice is ice cream. I think he is just a different personality then a lot of the other top guys. Gee always seemed to be kind of like Gwin. I don't think they are unliked by their peers, they just don't have the same personality.
How can the women's times be so spread out? The top 3 are all 10 seconds away from each other and Rachel was a minute faster than 15th place. I truly don't understand why
I'll be guessing she is living of his bike 100%, meaning she can be at her bike 24/7 365, also she is taller more shaped like a man. she also has to be at least able to follow gee's training. thats why, tahnne kind of like the same and so tracy and manon. still they lack the strength of rachel and the guidance of a top guy like gee or dan.
think its a shit stream by RedBull. I have the same problem this week and during last weeks XC, but seem to be okay streaming other things outside RedBull Media TV.
@speedyjonzalas: interesting that. I am with iinet as well and have all kinds of issues with the Red Bull Tv app. Could stream the race no issues via uci website which uses the old player once i found it.
To the two clowns that were smiling, cheering, and waving at the camera mid way through Stevie's ghost run like a couple of complete disrespectful assholes -- grow up. I will never understand people like you that are either completely clueless or just narcissistic idiots that can't simply be silent and respectful in situations like that.
i thought the same but having being to Fort Bill i doubt they would have heard over the Tannoy what was going on. Im giving them the benefit of the doubt and thinking they had no idea it was Stevies Tribute Run and Just waved at the camera for the sake of it
@ginjadave: Everyone on the track was silent....that would be a pretty good indication, and I can't imagine anyone going to that race and not knowing about Stevie and the tribute run. I think they were just two idiots that thought they were cool being on camera. Maybe I'm being harsh but that was just so terrible.
to be fair..I am not sure they realised it was happening. If you think about what it is like spectating on course - all you are really aware of is the riders coming down one by one - they might hve just guessed there was a delay up course. I dont think everyone knew there was a ghost run
Idk know if you're being sarcastic or have just haven't heard any of the latest news, but Stevie Smith passed away in his hometown due to a moto accident. It's heartbreaking and sad, but the Mountainbike Community rallied together and got the UCI to hold the ghost run for him. If you're talking about steve peat, well he's just old.
@treymotleyDH: nope just didn't see where his ghost run was slotted. I don't live in a cave and thought it was cool they were gonna do that as a memorial to him.
we were watching this part standing in silence
As a side note: What the hell is it about Minaar and Ft Bill that fit together so well?!
Time 1:13:30
2015: george branningan - windham
2016: eddie masters -fort william
