A1 HELMETS

2016 Troy Lee Designs Helmets

We launched the A1 helmet 3 seasons ago, after being the first to offer a extended coverage helmet in the early 90’s, with the ‘TLD Edge’, we focused on perfecting the full face market with our D-series, then we came back in the game with the A1 and it has been a bigger success than we ever imagined.

D2 HELMETS

2016 Troy Lee Designs Helmets

The D2 helmet, the legend, the helmet that literally everyone had to have when we released it and the helmet that every big name pro had to be in. It is the benchmark in full-face bicycle helmets, later on we introduced its successor, the D3, but the classic D2 helmet is still in demand and a great helmet for the more budget conscious consumer who wants safety and style.

bigquotesI get asked all the time; "Troy, where do you get your design inspiration from?" and I have to pause, because I am surrounded by so many creative outlets, whether it is new carbon bikes, motorcycles, artists, paint colors, the list goes on and on. This year for our bicycle line I felt inspired with what I saw on the trail and in the wild. My youngest kids are riding their bikes a lot more and seeing the ride experience through their eyes is like a bicycle rebirth for me - I am loving it. From our family rides on our local Laguna Beach trails, to the big pilgrimage we make to Whistler, Canada, I find inspiration in the shapes and colors that are all over outdoors... they say you have to stop and smell the roses, it's very true. Inspiration also comes from our amazing athletes we are partnered with all over the world. They racked up more wins and exposure for us than we ever could have imagined. The athletes push us daily to innovate and create-that inspires us. But ultimately, your safety, comfort and style is my priority, which always pushes us the most and we at TLD have done an incredible job bringing you another year of riding equipment for 2016. I hope you enjoy it and hope to see you on the trails! - Troy Lee, owner of Troy Lee Designs

Still the best looking full face on the market , Absolutely in love with the matte finishes this year !! Everything looks awesome!
  • 24 15
+ you feel so safe in this helmet that you let off the brakes more easily
  • 12 8
D3 Is a fantastic helmet, probably the best looks on the market... but it doesn't fit my head... so I ride in D2 which fits like a second skin. When it wears out I buy something that fits my head as well as Fox or Bell Big Grin
  • 14 4
Thank you Mr Troy Lee, for making one of the most comfortable fullfaces on the market. I've come to accept that mountain biking is 'exspensive', but you can't put a price on protecting your head !!!
  • 11 3
Love the protection, comfort and range of colours from Troy Lee, but I'm sad that there is no more black pinstripe d3.

Meh. Just kidding. Those are works of art. Best helmets out there. TLD never fails to impress.
  • 7 2
That's debatable. The 100% Aircraft looks and feels awesome.
  • 3 6
@michaelfraser19 but is as advance as your average second world war army helmet lol

 Great designs this year!
  • 1 1
WAKI it doesn't really fit my head also...but I make it fit Smile

All I'm worried about is why Sam Hill is not on their list of athletes.
  • 4 0
I was thinking the same. He has been with them for years.
  • 1 0
 TLD Groms getting more love
  • 1 0
this is weird .. suddenly no Sam Hill edition
  • 8 0
I think he is wearing new Leatt helmet this year like Mike Jones and the rest of CRC, as I can see from this video:

Not sure what the politically correct thing to say here is, but, we are a pretty open and honest brand, so here goes. Having Sam Hill in another brand of gear...sucks. Sam has been with us for over a decade, and when we lost him in gear (2014) it was not fun. We were able to keep Sam in helmets for the last 2 years, but for 2016 a newcomer came into his team's sponsorship negotiations and we dug deep to keep Sam-but also outfit the rest of his rad teammates. Sam's team did not want him doing his own deals, which us totally understandable, so we jumped in with an offer to sponsor the whole program-including Sam. Ultimately, the stakes became too high, this competitor was willing to pay significantly more and we had to step away. The team has a different sponsor for half shell/enduro riding, so the fact our guys wouldn't be able to wear our A1, along with our D3's, made it a little complicated. The stakes in that game became so high for our small brand, it would have diverted funds from future development of our products. It was also a bummer to not come to a deal with Sam's team because we have a good relationship with Nigel Page and his company, always fun working with those fellas, but, business is business. So, that's that. Sam will ALWAYS be a part of the TLD family, the door is ALWAYS open, and we would gladly have him back next year, in 2 years, in 10, whatever it takes. We love Sam Hill and we hope we are together again.

@troyleedesigns thanks for being so straightforward about this. I think I speak for many in the PB family when I say we are so used to the usual smoke and mirrors that it's great to hear how situations like this sometimes go down. Kudos to your brand, and best of luck...we don't like you our Sam any less!
  • 25 0
Thats refreshingly honest, thanks @troyleedesigns !
  • 3 0
Thanks for the honesty and for trying really hard to keep one of the greatest of all time in your roster. I have a feeling that he'll be back in tld gear in the future.
  • 4 1
TLD already awesome, but just went to a new level, well done TLD,mbusiness maybe business, but thats great business, msure Sam will be back one day, totally see both sides, new line updates sound really good esp like the D3 improvements, love mine, but they updates solve the minor issues exactly that I faced, I sniped my face edge trim on both my liners always had pressure points!
Q r the new liners check pads etc interchangeable with pre 2016 D3s?
  • 5 0
Such a legit move, no bad mouthing, but also honest about being bummed out. Loved @troyleedesigns since my motorcycle days, and my kit makes me stoked everytime I ride!
  • 3 0
All I'm worried about is why Charlie Sponsel is not on their list of athletes.
  • 1 0
massive respect for that response @troyleedesigns
  • 73 24
TLD could basically put anything on a helmet and everyone would be creaming themselves regardless. Some of these are incredibly ugly
  • 19 10
I'd bet if met come out with these same designs they wouldn't go down so well, brand name nut huggers every where
  • 3 1
Big fan of a1.not so sure I'd find myself creaming over another helmet tho.

Ive actually never been able to bring myself to buy a TLD helmet simply because of the color and shape vomit that they, i guess call "designs".
  • 2 1
It seems very similar to what theyve been doing in years past as far as looks go, not my style but I guess it works for em. I'm surprised they didn't change it up more with 100%, ixs, and leatt, all coming out with banging designs
  • 3 1
And what seems to be more innovative structural design as well
  • 2 0
I really like their shape and quality, but hate their graphics. Would prefer cleaner designs, but that doesn't seem to be their thing. But love to see they finally got rid of the pinstripes on the black D3 and offer a A1 in all black.
  • 3 0
some of the graphics seem to be stuck with a motocross look. lots of line work and sharp lines.
mtb has been pushing into big blocks of matte/dull colors with bright accents the past few years, so some of these designs look super dated.
not sure if the weird tiger and dragon ones are for groms, but if so, i think thats cool for them.
  • 2 0
I'd like helmet companies to offer a custom paint scheme. Like trek did a while ago with their frames, they have patterns, you go online pick what colors go where and bing bang boom my helmet is sicker than yours
  • 1 1
Beauty ugly is in the eye of the beholder, hence why there are many options, seems simple choice to me!
  • 10 3
Everyone seems to love these, and I do agree that it's a great product underneath, but I cannot get behind that design aesthetic. It's like Tron had a baby with a tiger, and that baby got hit by a brightly colored semi truck.
  • 5 1
Weird how most companies bring out their ranges half way through the previous year- good old Troy Lee bucking the trend! I'm not Gok Wan but those designs look better than last year to me. Matte ones look tasty.
  • 5 0
They put all this time, effort, and artistry into making awesome, cool looking graphics for their new helmets, and the black one is still one of the nicest.
  • 3 0
Stoked they don't release a new model each year just to sell more product, building in incremental change and withholding future innovation. D3 it still the best. They rely on Troy and his team making just look that much better each year to give us all the got-to-haves. Nice work dudes. I want them all...
  • 5 2
Some of the A1 colors look cool, others are way too much. I would have thought TLD would have come out with a MIPS version of the A1 by now or at least some revision to the helmet. I switched to a Smith Forefront with MIPS after two A1s, and even though the Smith doesn't have as much side coverage as the A1 but at least I don't have sweat constantly dripping on my face anymore.
  • 5 0
Absolutely love my A1, even though it runs a bit warm, it's just so comfortable!
  • 6 2
Often imitated, never beaten. Exceptional as ever, will be interesting to see what happens to the market with the 100% lid coming in...
  • 19 1
@jamesdunford, there has been plenty of competitors to come in to the premium helmet space, that we once dominated...and we are protecting more people than we ever have, our current customers and so many new ones have grown to trust our helmets, despite other brands entering the space. We welcome competition, it makes us all step up our game.
  • 2 0
A1 helmet is such a comfy and good fitting helmet ime that it would probably give me naughty thoughts about opting for a D3 of some sort int future over the Fox V3 carbon which was and still is a remarkebly light comfy well made helmet.

Airoh full faces (think MX accredited) are nice too but heard sketchy reports of QC with them.

At least TLDs keep things real by not producing bikes, frames etc etc therefore QC and design is up there to the max.

Smile
  • 4 0
Pretty slick as usual. Just don't crash. It's a PRICEY replacement. Especially in Canada.
  • 7 1
Get ready for some moron to say " what price do you put on your brain "
  • 7 0
Ha! Ya that sounds about right. Well to those people I would say that the Fox pro carbon MIPS is half the price as the carbon tld. At least around here it is. And I don't give a sh#t what anyone thinks......I love my Fox pro carbon.
  • 6 0
I normally buy mid ranged lids at discount prices, but many years ago I thought fuck it and treated my self to a posh lid, bought a carbon THE lid, pushing up the hill on the 1st day with lid on the bars... Fucking thing drops off and tumbles about 100 meters down one of the steepest slopes on the hill, completely fucked !
  • 2 0
Yes that would suck!! I'm gonna craddle my carbon helmet like a baby when it's not on my head.
  • 1 0
I'm still running my D2 with white flames, red drop shadows, over carbon. Every race is classic throwback day for the melon. When I see other people still running that lid we're always throwing the cool-guy-nod. Too cheap to upgrade - too old to die. My only gripe is that Mr Troy Lee raced Sport class DH in 2006 at Mammoth - I believe it was the Nat Champs - winning my class I believe, or maybe it was second place, but dude -Sport Class? Haha no hard feelings ya sandbagger!!
  • 1 0
Had an 2014 A1. Really liked the design look and feel of it, but Jesus it cooked my head. Not normally a problem in any helmet as i'm bald as fook, But my god it was so warm, if the venting issues get sorted for sure I'll get another one.
  • 1 0
HEY TLD, i emailed you a couple of days ago about the fit of my new D3, have yet to hear back. Im in possession of the new Fox Rampage carbon as well, much better fit and comfort. But Love the look and weight of D3. Will be sending "one" of them back, would like to get your advice on fit so its not the D3 I'm sending back.
  • 1 0
sweet lids. my D3 is the best fitting l have ever had. Just one question........when is the final edition Peatie lid coming out?
  • 3 0
@mattinsanfran Troy is working on it.

  • 2 0
Man the d3 has been the same since 2011. It's the best helmet I've owned, but some more vents would be nice.
  • 2 0
@mrfitz424 We have made small revisions every year, to the D3, since inception. As the PR said, we have revised the head form of the D3, listening to our customers and athletes that had some areas that needed addressing, so that is a big change to the mold-for the better. We also developed an entirely new cheek pad and headliner. The cheek pads are our new 3D cheek pads, that conform to the jawline more appropriately and are longer on the face-for better fit. We also ADDED more EPS to the helmet in key crash zones, based on customer feedback and crash data, this is a BIG change. Finally, we tweaked the outer rubber trim mold, so it is not as sharp as its been in the past.
  • 2 0
@troyleedesigns - oh, so is the new D3 maybe a bit wider? I bought D2 because no other helmet I have tried ever fit my head so well. 2 years ago I tried medium and large D3s and both were squeezing my ears quite badly, and cheeks were not so comfortable either.
  • 8 1
Your cheeks will be way better off, the ones on your mouth of course...lol...as for the EPS changes you really have to try the 16' models on to compare as it was more of a shape change than simply saying "its wider".
  • 2 1
Ok! I'll give it a try as soon as I get the occasion!
  • 2 3
@stikmanglaspell .... how about instead of pushing design, the stock photo guy PUSH that D2 visor into the fully upright position?

It's driving me nuts. My hand is on the screen right now pushing that "Joey" positioned visor as hard as I can. Arrrggghhh! Awesome helmet, lame old man, shade the eyes positioning. Wink

  • 4 6
Got a 661 full face lid for $100. You can't tell me the D3 is going to be 3-4 (based on MSRP) times lighter, more comfortable, safer, etc. Not shitting on TLD at all, I rock some of their apparel already, but damn that's expensive...
  • 12 1
The 661 is one of, if not the most unsafe helmet available of the market. The shell is made out of some cheap material, and it doesn't meet a number of certifications. Specifically the chinbar doesn't. That's not to say that there aren't safe helmets to be had for cheaper than the d3(ex: giro cipher, bell transfer 9)
  • 1 1
good to know @pm148 i loved mine, but had no idea it was that shoddy. just bought my second, but maybe ill return it...
  • 2 0
You raise a good point with this. There doesn't seem to be a clear comparisons between el cheapo helmets (661) and a more expensive options (TLD). So when people on a budget are buying helmets they are going to favour the cheaper options - but in doing so they are compromising their safety.
  • 1 0
Yea a lot of people are surprised that the safety is actually that compromised. It's not just a style or weight thing. The 661 and the fly default are the two that come to the top of my head as helmets to stay away from.
  • 4 0
@LRod1018 we buy A LOT of helmets, and destroy them in the lab, read the data, strive to improve every day. Won't name names, but there are a lot of helmets out there that 'pass' the standards, our mission has always been to destroy those 'standards' and go above and beyond in safety, comfort, quality of construction, quality of our graphics. Good luck out there.

@jonathandavis Actually, it will be almost a year, we have a MAP pricing policy, to protect dealers. Every helmet see's discounting at the end of the season, but you can be assured most other brands don't even have MAP, and most other brands see WAY deeper discounting than TLD helmets.
