First Look: New AG-1 Lock-On Grips From ODI - Sea Otter 2014

Apr 10, 2014
by Mike Kazimer
Grips may not get as much time in the spotlight as other more tech-heavy products, but they're a crucial part of any mountain bike, and a grip with well thought out ergonomics can go a long ways towards improving how a bike feels. ODI Grips allowed us to take a sneak peak at their upcoming lock-on grip offering, the AG-1. Developed with extensive input from Aaron Gwin (hence the AG in the name), the grip is intended to meet the needs of the most demanding riders around, including World Cup athletes like Gwin.

ODI AG-1 grip
The AG-1 is the same thickness as ODI's Ruffian grip, but it has several new features.

Roughly the same thickness as ODI's popular Ruffian grip, the AG-1 has a few additional features that were added based on Gwin's suggestions. Like many riders, Gwin rides with his hands at the very edge of his handlebars, often resting the outer portion of his palm on the lock-on clamp itself. To address this, the AG-1 does away with the outer lockring, replacing it with an integrated plastic end cap that the rubber portion of the grip nearly covers. Extending the grip's surface over the spot where an end cap would typically be gives riders 1/4” more hand room on a grip that is the same exact length as the Ruffian. Four raised rubber lines are located around the grip's surface to provide extra traction in challenging conditions. The positioning of the lines is meant to match the articulation points of a rider's hand, providing a solid feel without adding much overall thickness. The plastic outer end cap should also help the grip to glide rather than get hung up on rocks should you end up off the bike in a rocky section of trail.

ODI AG-1 lock-on grip
There is the potential to use up to five different colors on the AG-1 - expect to see all type of color combinations when the grips hit the market in late May.

Each grip has one lock on clamp located on the inboard portion of the grip, a clamp design ODI has been using on their motorcycle grips for the last four years. Unlike ODI's other lock-on mountain bike offerings, the aluminum ring is not removable – the AG-1's ship with the ring already in place. Installation is as simple as sliding the grip on and tightening the one hex head bolt.

The AG-1's are awaiting Gwin's final approval – he'll be trying them out at round two of the DH World Cup in Australia. If they meet his expectations, they should be available by the end of May with an MSRP of $35 USD.

And you can't keep the collars and then get the rubber separately. For that much, I'd get renthal kevlar.

they look divine and promise miraculous grip

. but I would worry the plastic end cap might fall out, leaving you with "holy" grips

Renthals also have non removable collars...

Yes. That's why I'm comparing them.

Iffy, thanks for the compliments. The plastic end caps are actually molded all the way through the grip. It's not something you can see from these photos, but they are part of the plastic tube that runs all the way through the grip. In addition, that colored ODI logo on the end is actually aluminum molded into the grip giving you extra protection for your bars ends and making you grips last longer. And Drakche, part of the reason that the clamps come preinstalled is because of them being a single clamp design. In order to get the most secured single clamp design, we needed to pre-install. But don't worry, we will have many color options to choose from.

 To ODI
Can you comment on the post below on how secure is the outer portion of the grip with only one clamp. seems like you would be able to twist the grip towards the end?

I've been using the Teva grips that only have one "lock." I've had no issues at all and prefer them over any of my ODI's. Hopefully they'll keep making them after they bail on the Mtn bike shoe scene.

I found BMX grips a lot better than lock-ons, they are cheaper, WAY softer, and vear very slowly. The only bad thing about them - they start to spin in wet conditions, but the MX grips glue will solve this.

At $35 for grips, they better be the best. I got me a pair I paid $15 and are absolutely fantastic. Have them for 2 years now and still in great shape.

@eco51stLRS since the blogg is on ODI did u know that ODI's Troylee version is like a baby version of those old BMX grips.but the donut is on both ends amd great grip simular to whats going on with this AG grips griplines just the TLD ones have a wiered like bite all the way around i like them better than Ruffians the outer donutt keeps hand from sliding out on wet or muddy conditions.cheeck them out if u go to a race and ODI has a tent u can cheeck them out

These may solve my issue w/ right hand wiskey throttle thumb burning thru grip too fast, if that's extra durable material in that solid spot?
  • 1 0
i'm really curious how they are able to get that grip to stay put with one clamp. i lost an outer clamp on my lock-ons once and that side of the handle bar became useless.
  • 3 1
Pro does a really cool thing on the athertons grip. They have an expander with a screw on the outside of the grip so it stays put.

As many people know there's no substitute for eliminate twisting and slipping to the way that ODI Lock On grips clamp directly onto the handlebars, and not onto plastic that is pinched onto the handlebar. The new clamp continues to use this design, but it is slightly larger giving it more strength. When attached to our plastic tube you won't need to worry about the end of the grip twisting. It was super important to us and AG that we eliminate that outside clamp. We started using it in our motocross grips about 1 1/2 years ago and after proving it succesful, we've brought it back over into our MTB line.

thanks for the reply! will you guys be bringing this technology to your other lines of grips as well? i am not a huge fan of the ruffian (a bit too thin for my taste), but i do love the troy lee desigins lock ons. the troy lee lock ons have a little bit of a lip at the outer edge of the grip which is nice, but i too like to run my hands all the way out to the ends of the handlebar. if this new method was introduced to the troy lee grip, it would put that little lip on the grip that much closer to the outer edge of the bar and that would make me a happy rider.

Tried and true Ruffian, but with a 1/4" more rubber you say? Sounds very 650b to me. I'm out.

My Dad made them(donuts) in our BMX shop in 1978. Came in different colors and we labeled them "jo-nuts". His name is Joe.
