Wearing my Five Ten shoes is as important to me as having my shifting set up properly and the rest of my bike in proper running order. They have become an essential part of my riding kit, right up there with gloves and helmets, always have to have my Five Tens on too.

Inside we take a quick look at Five Ten's new SPD offerings,

Dean at Five Ten had a few new offerings on display and was telling us that the much in demand Minnaar shoe is only about a month away from stores. The Minnaar and the Hellcat will be Five Ten's first SPD compatible shoe offerings for those of us out there that do like to clip in while we ride. The demand has been high for this shoe, so expect the first ones to disappear from shelves quickly.

I'd buy the minnaar if it didn't have the space for the cleats.

Five Ten makes some great products and these look they will be great too. I personally prefer flat pedals over clipless, but for riders who like using clipless, Five Ten's new SPD shoes look great. I've been using the Five Ten Freerider shoe for about a year now and I love the grip they give me, much better than a regular skate shoe. Props to Five Ten. Smile

Something that you may want to add to the article is that the clipless shoes that they are releasing will have a 4mm decrease in sole depth. I spoke with them at Sea Otter and they told me that the production shoes would have this change to drop weight and have a lower profile.

Five ten shoes are pretty sweet!! Their S1 technology in the rubber compound is like none other, acts almost like glue. But the SPD idea has been out for awhile. Vans has offered it in there Warner SPD Bike Shoe and I believe Shimano has a pair out as well. The spitfire look very similar to what Duncan Riffle's wears from Vans, weird!

flag domino0 (Apr 27, 2010 at 10:13)
its not the idea of clipless shoes that is new with the 5:10 SPDs its that they also have stealth rubber so if you unclip and have your foot out, then go into like a steep techy section and cant clip back in, you will still get grip from the stealth rubber (granted you have pins in your pedals like crank bro's mallets)

flag CraiGee (Apr 28, 2010 at 3:52)
Just a point, but if you run 5tens you'll know what i mean, you jump on to sesh a corner or whatever, and you're foot isn't on straight... Impossible to twist it without lifting it, isn't it? Imagine trying to unclip...

I guess this makes the life-meaning question "should I buy clips or 5.10 shoes" useless. I have a pair of 5.10 karver and am very happy with the stealth sole. It grips a lot better than the normal skateboard shoes I used to ride with. Definitely a quality product

deffo buy 5tens not only do they have great grippy soles that you can actually walk in but the toe and heel boxes are very tough and ward off any rock strikes and you can get them resoled once worn out or even get your favorite skate shoe soled with the steath sole Smile

i've seen the spitfires in a blk/grey & they looked great. remind me of my HalfCabs. They are pricey for a "skate" shoe. Impacts for sure on the trail but I may stick with my Vans for everything else.

According to sources, they fixed the sole ripping off on the Freerider and shoes derived from the Freerider,Guess only time will confirm that though.

flag whattheheel (Apr 27, 2010 at 13:11)
I have the new freeriders in the blue zebra (pic in my folders) and they are much better and have held up well. They wrapped the sole all the way around and are much better!

flag nightfox (Apr 27, 2010 at 15:39)
Yeah, I think the blue zebra came out on a new batch so they might indeed fixed that on yours.

Not as gay as some chump thinking he's rad because he rides flats. Next time you're out kicking Peaty, Nicho and Minaar's ass, why don't you ask them why they are so gay? Maybe you should just admit you're afraid to clip in.

I was recommended by a 5.10 retailer to go buy some dunlop volleys as they are cheap and super grippy. Lets see, pair of 5.10 freeriders $180 aus ~12-18 month life, pair of dunlop volleys $25-30 aus ~3-6 month life. If you're serious go buy a pair of 5.10's, but Im only 14 and so volleys are a better choice for me. Maybe when I have some more money and I'm more serious I'll get some, depends on your circumstances. Hope that helped. ~ means approximate.
