Fluidride Cup #1 Event Coverage

Apr 10, 2008

The Pacific Northwest Gravity Series has officially begun. Fluidride, NDub Productions and Hurricane Racing hosted one helluva battle that started with Dual Slalom and ended with one kick ass DH. Held in Port Angeles, Washington on the "Dry Hill Trails" this 6 race series is going to bring some national attention.

Tons of photos by Carl Warren and a couple of nice videos done by Miles Sullivan of Shovelpick Productions.

Now the "Dry Hill Trails" were not exactly dry. Its early April and the Pac NW has had a pounding of snow/rain over the winter. But I can honestly say, no matter when or where you hold a DH race- the racers will come to battle for the best times. Especially when they announced a DUAL FREAKING SLALOM TRACK!, let the battles begin.

Here's 2 videos covering the Dual Slalom, the first one is by Miles Sullivan (who was coming down with an illness) of Shovelpick Productions. Bust out your cowbells!

Now this one was done by Pinkbike's very own Tyler "Brule" Maine:

Casey Northern was taking no prisoners....until the finals where he got beat out by his teammate Lars Sternberg. They put on a great race.

Dual Slalom rules, its the one event where you put everything into a fast run, this young man is on edge.

Everything you ever needed at a DH race was there- Hot Coffee and Pizza vendors kept us all happy with good treats. The base area was very organized and it ran flawless most of the time. One early Saturday morning shuttle resulted in 2 stuck rigs, but they quickly got them unstuck and racers were lapping furiously to dial in the fastest lines.

The temps were hovering around 36 F most of the weekend. Rain was falling, but not enough to hamper any spirits. Most racers brought along snowboard gear in case a full blown winter storm set in. The track was very well laid out and constructed. Racers left the freshly built start ramp and pedaled their butts down "White Knuckle".

This event was close enough to Canada that a few young upstarts made the drive down. Having a strong representation of the Canadians present made a lot of us Americans excited. Several friends and allies were created over the weekend.

And to really make this event a "Melting Pot" of talent, NZ's Cameron Cole pinned for 4th in Pro Men
Dirt Corps were out in full effect.
The ladies were out in force and posting some seriously good times. The lovely and talented Leana Gerrard competed in DS and DH. Podium 2X's!
Last years, last racer out of the gate returns for another season- Chelsea Stevens pinned.
Joy Mutoli making the hardest sections look effortless, dropping into the steep MotoGuzzi.
Simon Lawton looking damn smooth and stylish.

Did I mention yet that there were just under 300 racers signed up?

Here's another Miles Sullivan of Shovelpick Productions video to show you the race:

There's a lot more photos here on Carl Warren's albums, even more on Ty's Albums and few more on my photo albums.

Here's some short little clips of the track from top to bottom.
