Scotts Valley, Calif. – FOX—the ride dynamics company—congratulates its 2014 World Champions, Julien Absalon, Catharine Pendrel, Gee Atherton and Manon Carpenter for their gold medal performances in men's and women's elite cross-country and downhill events, respectively. Culminating a season that held all of the ingredients of a fabled storyline—old rivalries, heartbreak, technical brilliance and rising stars—the 2014 Mountain Bike World Championships in Hafjell, Norway did not disappoint.

Julien Absalon and Catharine Pendrel Reclaim Rainbow Jerseys in Elite Cross-Country

In elite cross-country, Julien Absalon and Catharine Pendrel both regained their rainbow jerseys aboard their electronically activated, FOX FLOAT iRD-equipped bikes. Absalon chose to run a full-suspension bike for the first time in his career and it paid off as he opened up a gap on the fifth lap and never looked back. "I made a really good choice to use a full suspension bike because it is such a bumpy track, but it was a little risky because this was my first race with a full suspension bike," said Absalon. "So it was a risk, but a good one.” This win is gives Absalon his fifth World Championship title; he also took home the 2014 World Cup Series title.

Pendrel took the lead from the start and held a comfortable gap until the last lap, when a front flat threatened her stand atop the podium. A lightning-fast wheel change in the pits kept her out front and she powered to the finish line for her second World Championship title. "I like to race from the front," stated Pendrel. "When there's an opportunity to take the lead you should go for it. That's always the kind of racer I have been. If you want to win the Worlds, you have got to be willing to take some chances and go out strong.”

Gee Atherton and Manon Carpenter Take Home Top Honors in Elite Downhill

In elite downhill, Gee Atherton took his second World Championship title and Manon Carpenter won her first aboard their bikes equipped with prototype FOX forks and shocks. The prototype program, dubbed FOX Racing Applications Development or RAD, serves as a proving ground for product development utilizing FOX’s elite athletes. In an event typically won by hundredths of a second, small advantages can lead to big results–and clearly Atherton and Carpenter’s RAD prototype forks and shocks delivered. Atherton was in second through splits one and two before putting the power down on the final leg to take the hot seat away from Neko Mulally, who had a brilliant run despite losing his chain in the first few feet of the course. Josh Bryceland was the last man down and was on a good run when he landed flat off a huge jump, breaking his foot and still managing to finish second.

World Champs Press Release

Carpenter was in the hot seat and just had to wait and watch top-seeded Rachel Atherton’s run to know if she would get rainbow stripes to go with the World Cup Series title she earned a few weeks earlier. Rachel Atherton was up through splits one and two but ultimately crossed the finish line just 0.088 seconds off Carpenter's time. "I wasn’t nervous before my run," said Carpenter. "I went out and attacked the course without holding anything back and it went exactly how I wanted."

"We are very excited and proud for our newly-crowned World Champions," said Mark Fitzsimmons, FOX race program manager. "It's gratifying to see our collective hard work pay off by taking all four of the top spots in XC and DH."

Question, does Fox's HUGE involvement in racing justify their inflated prices for suspension parts?
  • 17 5
 Absolutely....... not!
  • 57 10
Nobody is forcing you to buy their product. If you don't wanna pay their price look elsewhere. Plain and simple.
  • 14 15
No, the fact that most of it is made in US does.

 *assembled in US

 @aceospades Made, look it up.

 enduromag.com.au/site/bike-news/enduro-magazine-visit-fox-factory-tour-part-3

yep currently "mostly" made in the US. Their plan to move to Taiwan seems to be in place
  • 4 1
thanks@Sycip69er, I just read that as well. For the longest time it was only the lower castings that were outsourced, now it looks like even the stanchions and some of the internals are made overseas as well. They still finish all parts to tolerance on CNC machines here before assembly, but looks like they are moving to Taiwan for raw parts.

And their shitty customer service?? Never been so disappointed in Fox until I had to send a rear shock in and it took 3 months and $130..

RockShox for life now.

it's not fox's fault, its the climate of things and cost of manufacturing in the gold ol' usa. We've screwed ourselves industrially in north america. England is one of the few places outside of asia things can still be produced and sold for a reasonable price.
  • 5 0
That surprises me due to our high cost of living. No denying though we do have a few strong bike related brands
  • 8 1
Reasonable prices in England, where are you getting your information from. We pay through the nose for stuff here so if the cost of manufacturing is low we are not seeing the benefits. And again, you mean the UK right, you are aware England isnt the UK.

"England is one of the few places outside of asia things can still be produced and sold for a reasonable price."

Is that the England in Europe or another one ?
  • 2 0
Everybody gets different results but I had my front and rear shock serviced last year including updating my FLOAT 34 to new internals and they turned it around in a week and I live 2000 miles (3218.69km) away.
  • 4 0
The industrial revolution is long gone.
"Hope" is really pushing British quality
  • 3 0
Hope is certainly doing that ,but their gear is expensive.
  • 3 0
Working for an engineering firm, you begin to appreciate just how much time goes into crafting those hope products
  • 1 0
works components for example, very reasonable pricing and they produce their products in house and will do custom work at no charge because they're 100% in control of their manufacturing process. Hope components, for what goes into them, the pricing is very reasonable, no way you could manufacture those components in north america and reach the same price point. Complain all you want, but England has kept their manufacturing industry alive and viable, while we outsource everything here and slowly let our money bleed out into the asian economy, while they use their slave workers to achieve their bottom line and take their cut.
  • 1 0
We are no different. Engineering success story's aren't hugely common over here. We outsource as much as any other country. As consumers we expect to pay very little
  • 1 0
3D printing should have a tremendous impact on this conversation soon. Some of the 3D printing 'factories' are amazing....except that they employ VERY few people.
  • 2 0
@ randybadger : Burgtec, DMR, BTR, Cotic, Orange, Hope, Works components.....theres probably more I'm forgetting. How many companies in north america manufacture their own stuff in house now? Avalanche, fox to an extent and Intense? even Intense is having to restructure. I'd be thankfull high end fabrication is still viable and in your culture over there. Lets not forget how many sports car manufacturers and F1 teams come from your country.

peanutbuter - misspelled......damn how many s's should that be !!
  • 1 1
You need to be when their shit breaks every couple months. I had the damper in my old boxxer disassemble itself in my for while I was riding. It was installed AT rock Shox.
  • 3 0
During crankworx my brother broke his x9 derailler. He took it to the SRAM/rockshox tent and the gave him a brand new XO. However, when I take my brand new Fox 831 fork off my hardtail into fox because the steertube was serperating from the uppers, fox tries saying that there was nothing wrong with it.
  • 1 4
@kaelmarkle SRAM is a huge corporation and has the resources to do so. Fox is much smaller and cannot simply give out a bunch of free parts
  • 3 0
the best comment thread i've ever read. thank you @peanutbuter (couldn't even spell his username correctly) @roomrestriction @bikeaddict123 @maynardle3 @pigman65

F Fox... X-Fusion!! Seriously I bought a Float CTD BV and pretty much hated it. It felt gimmicky with all its modes and settings and was never really happy with it. I put on an X-Fusion O2 RL that I got for cheap off of ebay as a backup and thought WOW, this is how a shock SHOULD feel.
  • 3 0
Totally agree but when you start comparing the best of both companies they come out fairly similar unless theres a defect. Its really just about preference and who signs who to which team. Ride what you like to ride! Smile

Bought new frame and am excited to try the new Vivid on the back and keep my last year Fox 40 up front. Love my blended family haha
  • 2 0
I'll put a third on that, I love my avalanche shocks and cartridge for my 888. I thought I wanted a Fox 40 but couldn't afford it so decided to go with the Avy cartridge , it blows every fox 40 out if the water and a dorado , never ridden rock Shox boxer .
  • 3 0
Avalanche. Loved my DHS shock. Best part is they're 15 minutes away now. Now if only I could afford to race again.
  • 3 0
Avalanche is amazing and worth every bit of hype, money well spent. Their boxxer cartridge has to be dollar for dollar the best thing I've ever bought for my bike.
  • 1 0
I think their plan to move to Taiwan is to cut their "production" cost.
Since production and shipping cost to Asia (especially to South East Asia) will much cheaper.
  • 3 2
WE ALL FAIRLY KNOW THAT THESE GUYS WOULD HAVE WON IF THEY WHERE WITH ROCKSHOX FORKS.... It s the man/women who wins, not their bike product IF its ALL high quality
  • 1 4
So. If Sam had not had an incident would Fox have won? Fox employ the too females, they could be on marz or RS and win. Oh and cane creek don't sponsor any top riders.
So you pay for the majority of top riders and get a win.
Having timed between fox RC4, rock shox vivid air and coil and cane creek on the same track, same day. All setup. Cane creek was fastest for me followed by rock shox and fox some way behind. All timed on free lap and all a minimum of a type test so 3 runs.
Different shocks do suit different riders though.

 Finally a decent conversation.
  • 1 2
I make a lots of money with fox shock fixing them all the time but there really suck getting parts for them.
  • 8 11
Given almost everyone runs Fox forks this seems a little contrived!
  • 17 0
not really true at all.. tons of AWESOME riders that run the Boxxers or other brands...
  • 4 3
Around southern BC pretty much everyone on a newish AM bike is on a Pike. The only AM people I see on Fox are people whose bikes are a few seasons old. Though maybe this will start to shift with the new 36.
  • 5 0
i think people been little bummed out on fox 'cause of their shitty trail forks these last coupe of years. When I was looking for a new bike I made sure it was not equipped with a fox. A lot of companies has picked up the pike in there spec. but fox is such a large company they will have no problem muscle their way back. With the new 36 out fox will restore the damage pretty quick. I'd still buy the the pike tho if I was to chose just because I did not like the old fox and it makes me hesitant to trust them again with my money.
