Giro Feature MIPS Helmet - Review

Giro Feature MIPS review

Giro Feature MIPS Helmet

The original Giro Feature was launched nearly four years ago, a helmet aimed at trail and all-mountain riders looking for more rear coverage, similar to that of a skate-style lid, while still retaining an adjustable visor and adequate ventilation. For 2015 the helmet's styling remains the same, and it's still constructed with a polycarbonate shell and EPS liner, but it's the addition of MIPS that's newsworthy. MIPS, which stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, is a low friction liner that lets the inner shell of the helmet slide along it during an impact, movement that's intended to reduce the amount of rotational energy that reaches the brain during a crash. Traditionally, MIPS equipped helmets have been rather expensive, but Giro's parent company, BRG Sports, recently announced it had invested in MIPS AB, the company behind this technology, which is likely part of the reason the updated Feature only costs $20 more than the non-MIPS version. Available in sizes XS-XL, the Feature weighs in at 306 grams and comes in matte black, matte glowing red / highlight yellow, or matte white. MSRP: $95 USD. www.giro.com

The MIPS liner is visible beneath the red foam pads in the upper two photos. There's also a ratcheting retention system to dial in the fit, and a moto-style adjustable visor.

Pinkbike's Take:
bigquotesOut on the trail, the Feature has a secure fit that can be easily adjusted with one hand using the dial at the rear of the helmet, along with an adjustable visor that has enough movement to position it out of eyesight even on steep climbs. The 12 large vents allow enough airflow to keep things fairly cool when the temperature climbs, and even though it's not as airy as a dedicated XC lid, it's still on par with other similar offerings such as the Bell Stoker. I did experience some excess forehead pressure on longer rides, but that's due to my head shape, and one of the reasons why it's important to try on a helmet before buying - the overall shape varies from company to company, even with closely related brands like Bell and Giro. Other testers didn't experience any fit issues, even on multi-hour rides.

Because of the difficulty of gathering real-word crash data (we luckily avoided any hard crashes during the test period) the effectiveness of MIPS is still open to debate, but since it only adds a few grams to the Feature and doesn't alter the fit or performance in the slightest, it's hard to think of a reason not to buy the MIPS equipped version, especially since there's only a slight price difference. Considering how easy it is to achieve warp speed on the latest batch of trail and all-mountain bikes, a little extra cranial security certainly isn't a bad idea. - Mike Kazimer

truly badass to see mips technology in a sub-$100 helmet!

I think I'm going to get one. I like the smith forefront better, but the price is ludicrous and I read it's too hot if the temperature is over 17ha ha.

One thing pinkbike: a visor is a clear screen that protects your eyes. This helmet doesn't have a visor, it has a peak or bill.

@jaame: It depends on what part of the world you're from. Here in North America, this helmet has a visor, just like how our bikes have rear derailleurs instead of rear "mechs."

It is quite confusing, using the same word for two different parts of a helmet. I suggest you north Americans amend your terminology to avoid unnecessarily confusing the other 6.8 billion people in the world!

 @jaame nahh we're good

Cars have visors also but they are not transparent. They do protect your eyes from the sun, much like a helmet visor does. Or you can call it a "bill" like money, or like a ducks face which are both rather irrelevant unless you protect you eyes with currency strapped to your forehead or wear flippers and splash around in puddles.

nahh we're good here in Canada too....

It sticks out at the front like a duck's bill doh!
The point being, my motorbike helmet has a peak on the top to keep the sun out, and a clear visor to keep the flies and wind out of my eyes. Two different things doing two different jobs, but they have the same name by your terminology. That's not very clear is it?

 ugly as fuck haha

I'm always a fan of companies that make high quality stuff for a decent price

I would like to see it compared to TLD's A1.
  • 3 2
I would still pick the A1 over the Feature. I run the Feature full time and it's great for most of the time in the NorthWet. But, I disagree with their review over the ventilation. On warmer days it doesn't breathe very well at all. Matter of fact, I'm looking at an A1 lid for summer riding as those ventilate very well. Otherwise, this is a fantastic helmet for the price. I believe I got my non-MIPS one last year for $43. The padding wore out super fast but luckily Giro sells pad sets everywhere.

I was just at Jenson trying on helmets thinking I was going to get the Feature or the IXS Trail. Neither fit anywhere as well as the A1. While I hadn't expected to drop that much on a helmet, the A1 was so much more comfortable than any other helmet I tried on it would have been stupid to purchase anything else.

@chezotron if you want a helmet in this segment that breathes, the bell super is unmatched
  • 3 0
I have both, a1 blows it away for comfort
  • 2 1
@vpfree2009 not sure why i'd get neg popped, I'm sure the a1 is great, i was just saying how well it breathes
  • 1 0
I agree with VP. The A1 just seems to fit my head like a glove. I like the Feature and it's a heck of a bargain for the price. But the A1 is definitely a better helmet all around. If only they'd get MIPS....then again it would be $200. Frown

Got both, TLD A1 is better ventilated (but not the best one), more comfy, better liner durability.
Feature is a very good helmet when you compare on price/feature, my only downgrip is liner durability which is poor as it start to fall of in pieces after one year of heavy use.

Love my feature (and hex and xar), my go to lid as its prob the best fit! I will prob buy the mips version when my current feature is due for a change (not far away) as any improvement in features is a plus for safety! I've had a couple of bad hits, thankfully with a helmet on, and have lived to tell, something I don't think would of happened without a helmet. My feeling now is buy the best I can and so if mips is available, I'll buy!

Been using the original Feature (non MIPS) for two years, I think it's great and I actually like the minimalistic styling. The Y shape of the straps is fixed and only the overall length can be adjusted, but it stll fits me perfectly. In hot summer days it's not the coolest, that's why I got it in white.

I will get one of these for the Episode VII Star Wars premier next year. Along with 661 shinguards and elbow pads

I do like the look of the helmet and it is a fantastic price, but the rotational protection is a hard sell for me. Giro has done their own studies for rotational protection, but there aren't any standards to compare them to.

I basically have the no-mips version of this helmet and like the fit/look, but find it a lot hotter than my previous more XC helmet. Which is a shame, cause my face melts any time it's warmer than 10 degrees (celsius)

Err I need to apologise for any offense caused by my stupid enduro comment the other day, and can i say thanks for down-voting me into oblivion. Drink and pinkbike don't always go well together!
In fact, I'm usually the one slating people who post comments like mine!!

I promise it won't happen again Smile

I love these helmets. The last one I had literally snapped in half in a big crash, and only left me slightly concussed. Considering the dent in the helmet, I truly believe it saved my life.

 Best buy of the year!
  • 3 0
how does it work with goggles and sunglasses? hopefully better than my a1.
  • 1 0
I never had a problem wearing glasses with the feature. Running Oakley goggles I'd get a little pressure on my nose. The Feature is better with glasses compared to the Bell Super which is better with goggles.

my winter helmet is a giro semi. nice older helmet. too hot to ride in the sumer. perfect for night riding this time of year.

If only the giro riding apparel was as reasonable. Love the steeze, but price is up there w/kitsbow.

Got the non mips in white and coated it in left over stickers I had
  • 3 1
i fully sharpie'd mine and stickered the visor. the stock white colour is just horrible.
  • 1 0
i had a grey helmet. bad idea. it was brown a ride later.
  • 1 0
Coat it in mud! Then you have 3d graphics and texture lol. Though if your enduro then weight might be a problem...
  • 1 1
Now let's see them add this feature to their full face helmets.
  • 1 3
 Guess they both suck then.
  • 1 4
No frontal shot? Okay, I'll look elsewhere.

that's what she said! (she was a slut)

No, just the rear baby until after the 2nd date!
