Go Time: Enduro World Series, Round 1 - Nevados de Chillan

Apr 20, 2014
by Matt Wragg
The time for talking came to an end this morning. As riders rolled out of the pits here in Nevados de Chillan and headed towards the first race stages for the Enduro World Series in 2014 it all became very real. So, fittingly, we won't say anything more and get straight into the action...

Enrico Guala flew in from Italy supposedly to commentate but it s more of an excuse for him to get to check out the trails here in Chile.

Martin Maes tore apart the first stage today. From talking to people it seems like he was manualling and roosting everything in his path. It equalled speed too as he opened the day with the stage win.

Nevados has plenty of steep chutes with moto-like ruts of loose volcanic sand. Get off line in one and you will be heading over the bars in a hurry.

While Martin Maes smashed stage one he didn t fair as well on the more demanding stage two where he slipped back to 8th place. Not to worry Maes has plenty of growing to do yet and we are sure he s only going to get much much stronger.

Jerome Clementz may have his work cut out for him this season. Clementz finished stages two and three in second and stage one in third. There are lots of young guns hungry to make their mark and Graves is also on the hunt for the overall title. It will be interesting to see how this season plays out for the Frenchman.

So many loose corners to blow up. Chillan is roost heaven and we think you can never have too much of it in a post.

Jesse Melamed lightens up the rear wheel to get around a loose hairpin on the entry to the bottom half of stage three. Probably one of the most awkward corners on any of the stages today riders have to shut down a ton of speed to make it around.

Today wasn t a good day in the office for Fabien Barel. He went down hard on stage one. Being the man that he is he carried on for the rest of the day but we last saw him this evening heading for the medical centre to get his back checked out as he looked to be in a lot of pain.

While we wouldn t say it was a spectator extravaganza trackside today there was a seriously impressive number of fans lining the final stage today - it s even more impressive when you remember that Nevados de Chillan is more than an hours drive from the nearest town.

Our very own Matt Delorme sending the bike park complete with 15kg camera pack. To cover these races you have to be fit - you don t just stand at trackside and occasionally point a camera at things you need to run ride and hike to reach the action however you best can. For instance on stage two today there was a 5km through sandunes to reach the start at 1 900m - all with the camera bag and bike to be carried.

That s race day one in the books. We are starting to get a picture of where the riders stand after the off season but we still have three really tough stages to go. Time to empty the sands of Nevados De Chillan from our shoes charge up our camera batteries and catch a few winks so we can do it over again.

About the sick shots: Sven Martin tried to get wild in the same corner as the 2nd and 3rd pictures to give a sick shot to the photo guy,
but ended up breaking the dudes finger. It's on Sven's instagram.

lol when the comment said that Enrico Guala or that dude flew up to Chile to commentate but was rather and excuse to check the trails, I thought it was an excuse to check out the babe with pink leggings.
  • 4 0
When I read the comment I thought they had substituted the word "trails" for "babes" on purpose, haha. She looks like a younger version of Marion Cotillard!

Me perdí una gran oportunidad en mi vida, por no ir a fotografiar, esperamos se repita nuevamente una fecha del EWS en Chile.

Saw CG had his helmet cam on, hopefully this means we get some race POV footage. Is there no way we can attach some sort of broadcast equipment to him and watch the action live? Small satellite dish maybe....

I really wish CG was sporting the Diamond on the front of his bike instead of a pike. Hopefully that doesn't mean the fork is a long ways off if he isn't even riding one yet.

Of course half a race does not mean everything, but having Graves on a 26" clearly ahead in this race is sort of ironic. Oddly enough, Clementz moved to 27.5 this year after having won on a 26" last year. At the very least one can say that the difference is marginal at best, and maybe - just maybe, insignificant.
  • 34 3
Jesus..., way to start a fight. The wheel size fight was so last year. Can we,please talk about how, much fun and passionate riding is in general... these guys/girls pin it to win it, and that's awesome. Keep charging kids
  • 14 1
No one really cares, Graves would do well on any bike, and Jerome would do well on any bike. A good archer will still shoot a bad arrow well
  • 2 1
What you are all forgetting is that graves and cg are both on am45s. Clearly this is most of the reason for their stellar performances.
  • 3 1
If the bike doesn't matter, why come up
with 27.5 at all?
  • 2 0
It all comes back to "How to be a Mountainbiker" by nsmb.com. Pick a wheel size, then be a dick about it! For the record I rode my 29er yesterday, I love my 27.5, and I'm building a 26er to ride park with my kids. They are all different but so much fun in different ways! What is better is totally subjective.
  • 1 1
OMG!!! The wheel size is just ONE variable amongst hundreds that equal the performance total. With all things equal, same bike, tires, setup, and rider, 650b is a bit faster than 26". You are comparing different riders on different bikes. Clements would have been a bit slower if he was on last years bike. Someone else stepped up their game, or Clements is playing strategic leaving gas in the tank for day two. Who knows?
  • 4 0
The wheel size fight may have been last year, but the wheelsize debate is clearly still happening and It's one of the most interesting things that has ever happened in mtb and isn't going away for awhile.

Castlemtn: "Can we,please talk about how, much fun and passionate riding is in general"

Unnecessary, I think we all agree on that one.

Protour, weren't you around when suspension came out, or disc brakes? Same passionate debate in those days too. This is nothing new.

Lots is unnecessary in these forums lately... Lets all just ride bikes and have fun. I could care less. I just took my single speed cruiser with a coaster brake on my fav trail. Fun fun. Ride bikes, drink beer and be happy
