New GT Slopestyle Bike Prototype!

Mar 28, 2009

GT Bikes are working on an all new Slopestyle bike with their new team riders Tyler McCaul and Andrew Cho. So far there are only 3 "Chototypes" in existence and there are no immediate plans to produce the bike as there are lots of revisions to be made.

Here is a look at the new bike and what steps have been taken to get to this point...

Upon talking with Patrick Kaye at GT bikes, I have learned the following about the work in progress and what all has happened to get them to the point in which they are currently at with the new frame. Here are some details on the new bike:

"As these are prototype frames, we wanted to start this program with geometry mules. So, instead of wasting a bunch of time with creating new tube profiles, forgings and so-on, we looked at which bike would hold best and where we could apply the geometries.

The GT Sanction is currently one of the burliest bikes in GT's line. Dubbed as an all-mountain bike, the sanction leans on the extreme side, with a hydro formed monocoque, straight gauge TT, forged HT, forged 1-1/8" pivot links and 12x135 maxle options made the Sanction the obvious candidate to be chopped up and re-configured.

In talking with Tyler, we identified some basic criteria which consisted of knocking the travel back from 6" to 4" on the rear end and some geometry revisions.

The end result was impressive, not only did the bike perform beyond Tmac's expectations but it flosses hard with a mean look."

Here are the numbers:

HA: 69
CS Length: 430
TT Length: 585
Seat Angle: 72
ST length: 422

Shock spec is 165 x 1.5
Rear wheel travel: 113
Leverage ration: 2.96

These bikes will be viewable at Sea Otter next month, so stop by the big GT Truck, say hi and have a look and ask some questions.

flag nickf (Mar 28, 2009 at 9:52)
the top tube is two pieces of hydro-forming welded together. it's a gt thing. i believe specialized does one piece hydro-forming. it's just a curved top tube. nothing new. just a good technique to keep things low

well GT pulled there finger out and made a bike that people will actually want to buy. Good job guys if its light i expect we will be seeing these on the 4x and dual slalom courses. Hope its not to expensive either and knowing GT it will be cheap or overpriced

That bike is sick. I got to ride it at Ray's a few weeks ago when GT had there demo fleet up there. It handles SO good in the air. Very perdectable.

that looks sexy and you can go SS too!
  • - 1
flag seraph (Mar 28, 2009 at 8:41)
No, you can't go SS on the frame, it's not a unified rear triangle, despite how it looks. There's a pivot that seperates the rear triangle from the BB.

This frame looks very nice, I like it alot. One of the nicest Shorttravel-Bikes out there! Maybe slightly shorter Chainstays and slacker Headangle ... 69° would be too steep for my liking.

I don't know about this bike. Not SS compatible and 430mm long chainstays are nothing to be proud of, and also a single pivot for hucking is not really well thought out. Their leverage curve is too linear, so they can't be as progressive as a linkage system.
