Video: Riding in Guatemala's Highlands with Hans Rey and Tom Oehler

by Pinkbike Staff

In January 2015 Hans Rey and Tom Oehler set out to explore the Highlands of Guatemala in Central America. The hut to hut trip was at high altitude above 10'000 ft., the trails were rough and remote. At the end of the back country bike ride the guys checked out a former Wheels 4 Life charity project and handed out an additional 31 bicycles at an incredible local school, a very inspirational project indeed. Back in Austria, photographer Stefan Voitl raised more money for Hans' non-profit charity by organizing a photo exhibition from the trip.

I was so stoked to see this. I'm familiar with Antigua, some of the highlands, and some of the lines in that vid. I've actually spent time with the homie at 4:30 riding for a fundraiser last year. I'm involved with the school at the end of the vid, (www.eftc.org.uk ) It's a great place doing awesome things. I was really surprised to see this vid! They are located in Jocotenango, just outside of the tourism in Antigua. It's an impoverished community that is fairly representative of Guatemala.
Strong work for everyone including oldtown. Thanks for all you do!

Antigua is about as Guatemalan as Kansas is Canadian. Other than that, dope vid.

Did you even try Google before you posted this comment or are you solely relying on quality of your education?

How about I go to Guatemala every year dude. Antigua is the tourist trap of the country. Freaking get a clue

People... Do you understand that Antigua was the old Capitol of Guatemala before the great earthquake? Good grief

Dude, I only read what you wrote, and not what you meant. If you meant that Antigua is not representative of Guatemalan culture and people, than you should have worded your comment a bit better, considering Antigua is a part of Guatemala and Kansas isn't in Canada. Just sayin.

Antigua gets a lot of tourists, you are correct. That being said, aside from a few of the interviews, a majority of this video was filmed on Volcan de Agua near San Juan del Obispo, El Zur, Jocotenango/San Felipe and in the department of Huehuetenango.

Or you wanted to have a "snap" comment based on assumption. As we American say assumption is the mother of all screw ups
